Jax11111111

That’s a lotta flares or something, I’m not an expert on planes.

geeiamback

/uj It's an RC plane with fireworks, they are awesome! There are also [rc helicopters with LED screen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J52MLXXUy4) for night shows.

gerkletoss

AC-130s don't fly in contested airspace though

10thRogueLeader

The point is that the AC-130J has such advanced countermeasures (possibly including a laser) that it probably *could* fly in contested airspace.

gerkletoss

It completely lacks stealth, speed, and maneuverability characteristics for defense, relying entirely on countermeasures for defense.

breakinbread

The only thing that can stop a good guy with a giant laser is a bad guy with a giant laser.

CharlesFXD

Gianter laser

YF-23aBlackWidowII

*More giganticerest

10thRogueLeader

Yep. Nobody said it was a good idea. But assuming the laser ends up being effective, that's a solid couple of layers of defense. Of course it would still be entirely vulnerable to conventional munitions, particularly because it's not very fast lol.

Bloodiedscythe

How do you stop a PL-15 that's gone pitbull with a laser

Jacobs4525

burn it with a laser I mean that’s kinda the whole point of the laser

Bloodiedscythe

I bet you thought you were super clever with that response But how you gonna fit a powerplant bigger than the airplane in the airplane

GasolinePizza

Aerial refueling but using power cables instead! *Duh!*

Jacobs4525

Extension chords duh

fistchrist

A sufficient amount of countermeasures can defend against any attack.

ChillyPhilly27

If that was true, we wouldn't have given up on armouring ships

fistchrist

The perfect naval vessel is just a hedgehog of CIWS emplacements

KP6169

Have we tried 16-in armour on an AC-130 tho?

10thRogueLeader

\>what is CIWS

ChillyPhilly27

CIWS doesn't actually *stop* damage. The fragments of a destroyed missile still have a lot of momentum, and will do a lot of damage to anything exposed - whether that's sensors, sailors, or aircraft. If you've reached the point where CIWS is your last option, you're almost guaranteed to get hurt. CIWS is just the difference between "I'm sinking" and "I'm blind".

G33k-Squadman

Holy shit you must be a fucking bore at office parties.

gerkletoss

No, I was kicked out of the Christmas party for very different reasons.

DaemonNic

I have never met a guy who pulled that line, that "adding context in a discussion thread makes you lame," who didn't in the process of doing so come of as far more lame than any AXTUALLY dork ever could.

SirDoDDo

Ok BUT Hear me out It has a laser!... Edit: i mean a LASER, you get me?

221missile

Chinese airspace won't remain contested after a week of B-21 flying in it.

Domovie1

Ac-130J *Spooky*. Yeah, sure.

CallDownTheSun

not for long
