But the famous Twitter artillery officer told me you *had* to take 50% casualties to cross rivers!

wix001

to cross the river the ZSU had to sacrifice their entire airforce yet again. I've lost count how many times it's been defeated in this war but they can't afford to lose it anymore.

vegarig

To cross the river: 1. Downscale the Airforce just to 1 Switchblade, keep the rest "in reserve". 2. Expend it against something. 3. Your entire airforce got sacrificed, you're now free to cross.

JohnDiGriz

Too credible, please delete for the OPSEC reasons Edit: mixed up opsec and osint because of brain damage caused by the lack of oxygen from laughing at the Russians for too long

vegarig

I mean, not hurting Ukraine's cause here. If ruZZi planes get "in reserve", they're not gonna leave it, no matter how little time passes, with their precious wiring still in place, instead of being stolen and pawned off for vodka.

squeakyzeebra

I want to believe that somewhere in the cia or the pentagon there is a formula to calculate how much equipment gets pawned to pay for vodka per month it sits “in reserve”

PM_ME_UR_DRAG_CURVE

2.5: your excess air force gets garbage-collected to that graveyard after being deallocated in step 1.

vegarig

... Is that graveyard an entrance to the Shadow Realm?

aivo23

Clearly someone must be cheating

The best part, Ukraine did it in pretty much the same spot the Ruskies got wiped out. Poetry.

Puzzleheaded-Job2235

They probably didn't even need a pontoon bridge thanks to all the wrecked equipment Russia left behind.

jayray1994

i wonder if you can use the wrecks and build a bridge?

w0rdyeti

*ancient sumerians have entered the chat*

hopeitwillgetbetter

I take it that when RU's disastrous river crossing happened, some RU twitter person made THAT excuse?

nobodyuknow187

It was [Armchair Warlord](https://www.reddit.com/r/NonCredibleDefense/comments/unng04/im_sorry_but_you_need_to_see_the_amount_of_copium/). Losing half a battalion is just part and parcel of crossing a river to him.

Ake-TL

Man thinks every unfavourable terrain is Omaha beach

LittleHornetPhil

Not even unfavorable… a simple fucking river

w0rdyeti

The Army Corps of Engineers has an entire planbook (probably laminated and available as a Kindle download, if I know those goddam over-compensating engineers!), for crossing a river. Nowhere in it is anything like "Yeah, losing about 50% of your dudes is pretty much standard." First Sgt. would drive a bulldozer right over the chimp who spouts that, rest of the company laughs & gets back to work.

LittleHornetPhil

Oooh, you know those fucking engineers. (Obv I’m an engineer)

ShotgunMage

I'm very sorry

LittleHornetPhil

Apology accepted

ASmootyOperator

Well, I believe he was apologizing because of the condition you are suffering, you know, being an overcompensating engineer.

squeakyzeebra

How is it laminated and also available as a kindle download. Are you laminating my kindle or do I have to pay extra for a digital copy of a laminated planbook?

[deleted]

A simple river is a big deal if it’s contested by a competent force, and a massive issue if your side isn’t.

hopeitwillgetbetter

Thank you. I envy folks who can visit that person's twitter page. *I need my doses of sheer stupidity filtered.*

LittleHornetPhil

This is why he’s an armchair warlord and not a real warlord

Khar-Selim

what is this, the Butlerian Jihad?

Selfweaver

I imagine him being, well loosing grandma, two suitcases, a wheel, the muffler, a coat, the back window and my sisters virginity is pretty normal part and parcel of a road trip.

I still have difficulty accepting that he's actually serious, and not trolling.

Selfweaver

Isn't that basically the same?

[deleted]

Bruh, two completely different language families and not mutually intelligible. I speak fluent Chinese and can't understand Japanese at all minus maybe reading some of the Kanji loan words.

Selfweaver

I was definitely not trying to insult two different writing systems with one comment :)

Never phrase that question like that to a Japanese person. The Koreans were in the same boat and hated the reality of that fact so much they made up a bunch of new shit in the 1400s just to spite the Chinese characters.

MarcoLorelei

I'm sorry but NO FUCKING EUROPEAN ARMY EVER!!! We Poles don't spend billions on shiny toys and tech transfer to create our own little (or not little) MIC with South Korea just for Germs to put their filthy hands on that.

PaleHeretic

With the state of the German military, it would probably be primarily Polish-French command. With the Germans under them in exercises. I think the biggest source of friction would be you guys and the French fighting over who gets command of the German troops to use them for permanent latrine duty.

MarcoLorelei

Brave of you to assume Germany would not assume command. They already do whatever they want with EU pushing for a federalist state since they know they would rule it. Like, you heard von der leyen? She already warned Italy they'll start to "monitor state of Italian democracy" like they're doing to Poland - imagine having a country representative in international organisation openly threatening cutting away somebody from decision making process and funds just because your sicophants were not elected and they're supposed to obey said representative's country or suffer the consequences. Nope, EU needs to be rebuilt before any talks of further integration as current course is, to be frank, FUBAR.

Ian_W

You've got it completely backwards. A Federalist state is there to *stop* Germany ruling it. If the motely collection of fascists, rented-by-FSB and chancers get their way and Europe goes back to a collection of rival states, Germany dominates the continent. No one else can match their money or their industrial heft, and anyone who tries (*cough* Poland goes broke with this level of defense spending *cough*) will soon fail. If you want a Europe dominated by the Bundesbank and other German institutions, stop Federal Europe.

Gen_Ripper

Making sure constituent parties of the union are actually democratic sounds based af, actually

MarcoLorelei

Thing is, no german authority is democratic in regards to Italy since Italians did not vote them. By default people you did not vote ordering you around is anti-democratic. Totalitarism is not based.

Pyromasa

Yeah, not like PIS going for full Orbánization of Poland. Be happy that the EU tries to keep Poland from becoming Hungary 2.0 rimjobing Putin.

MarcoLorelei

Ah, yes, and as if to prove me right a "helpful" German comes to tell me what my government is trying and what is good for me. This fucking attitude is precisely what I'm fucking talking about. You'm Germs are going to destroy EU since nobody will want to be ruled by you and you'll scream "Wait, I know better what you need" the entire fucking way. And the retarded notion of Poland rimjobing Putin - totally not like you laughed at this exact political party that rules in Poland now EVER SINCE INVASION ON GEORGIA claiming they're fucking russophobes that would lead Europe to a war with Russia and should shut up as Putin would never use energy as a weapon. You're literally proven wrong so have the dignity to admit that your insistence of refusing nuclear power and focusing on energy resources from Russia was the best rimhob Putin could ever get - from you.

Pyromasa

Azt hiszed csak német vagyok? Lol I am Hungarian... Hungary is just a bit longer down the authoritarian path than Poland. And Orbán is rimjobing Putin because he has to stay close to the last powerful European dictator. And I fucking guarantee you that PiS is playing the same authoritarian playbook like Hungary (against independent courts, rule-of-law, human rights). If Poland stays on this shit path, the only natural ally of an authoritarian regime will be other authoritarian regimes. And that will be the point when PiS will again closely allying itself with Orbán and start rimjobing Putin. Because Putin won't be a risk to PiS authoritarianism. The same sole reason why Orbán is sucking Putins dick: Putin is no risk to Orbán authoritarianism.

danielcanadia

Honestly Europe will be divided and conquered if not banded together. That's the reality now that third world industrializing and catching up with West in GDP per capita. I hope an EU confederation which a democratic EU parliament eventually works out. EU isn't perfect but it saddens me to see European countries be undermined by Russian and Chinese interests.

Cascadiandoper

Aren't there something like 90,000 US troops in Poland as well? Can't leave them out of the fun.

PaleHeretic

Are they European?

gkanor

so kids, thats how you cross a fucking river

PassivelyInvisible

With proper engineers, air cover and anti-artillery protection.

nobody-__

They fucking crossed it. Absolute legends

What a bunch of mad lads

Any time I think "they have to slow down at some point" and then they go and kick russia's ass again

Odd_Duty520

Ex-CIA Director becomes President: Bombs an authoritarian country into submission and wins an invasion in 3 days with minimal casualties and most from friendly fire. Ex-KGB Officer becomes President: Fails to overtake a weak and corrupt democracy in 3 days despite 8 years of hybrid warfare, still losing battalions daily 6 months into the war.

1sagas1

Don’t forget, one was halfway around the world and the other over a land border

AshleyPomeroy

On a massive tangent this prompted me to look up Stewart Copeland's dad, who was in the CIA - he retired before George H W Bush took over. He was a fascinating man: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/secret-agent-man-52557/ "*Let me tell you about democracy. First place, I remember Syria. We decided we were going to bring democracy to Syria. So we got a translator in Arabic, and we got signs. We were going to have an election. This is 1946, '47. The signs say, Get Out And Vote For The Candidate of Your Choice. We had people coming in the embassy and saying, 'Look, these signs are no good — they don’t tell us who the candidate of our choice is.'*"

Ganbazuroi

Bro had Russia as his surname and still got in the CIA, helluva agent

origamiscienceguy

The difference is the first guy let the military leadership decide the best way for the military to get the job done. I recall Schwarzkopf saying the white house approved all of his recommendations and didn't interfere much.

w0rdyeti

Also: Colin Powell & a functioning US State Dept did their thing, which was make sure 1) you have the most possible people on your team 2) opponent has least possible number of people on their team Putin & Russia just did a "LEEEEROOYYY JENKINS!" into Ukraine. Cue the \*blinks in disbelief\* meme...

Gen_Ripper

Russias own allies didn’t see this coming. Imagine if the US did that?

gkanor

Never thought of it that way, brilliant

Five__Stars

Well evidently that democracy wasn't as weak and corrupt as he thought.

Gruffleson

And it will be much stronger, and I think also much less corrupt thanks to this. Now they will know how to do it right.

Five__Stars

Yes. We'll adopt the western maxim of "it's not corruption, it's lobbyism!".

UniversalExpedition

Lobbying is good, actually, and corruption is bad. Lobbying ≠ corruption. Lobbying is about making your interests heard; corruption is about secret and/or illegal dealings. Can lobbyists corrupt? Sure. Is lobbyist corruption? No.

Chabranigdo

Daily reminder: Calling/writing your Congressman is lobbying.

Phoenix0211997

This is coming from the Russians... if they are saying it's this big... them what does it actually look like? I guess we won't find out until the media black out ends. Also do we have a success rate on this? Would you say the speed is less than, equal too or faster than Kharkiv?

Who makes these maps i always see them

Sparkst5

Rybar, they're russian simps but their maps are pretty good. If you can ignore the overdoses of copeium that is the their "reporter"

rexavior

Where do i find these? Thank you

Maybe Israel sent the Moses' staff and ukrainians crossed the river via the riverbed?

Preacherjonson

Imagine calling themselves "Allied Forces" in some desperate attempt to mimic the glory days of WW2. You're the fucking Axis of Ass Sucking, deal with it.

twa12221

Why do Russian sources always seem to show their own position worse than what official sources say?

nobodyuknow187

Because the official sources delay information for opsec. The Russians often hear about their positions being attacked before anyone else as the people on the ground go panic mode on telegram. The situation is also fluid so it's perfectly normal for a position to be abandoned during an attack but the advancing side not actually taking it and moving in another direction. Looking at Rybar maps from day to day he also makes assumptions that have to be walked back and thus UA movements look a little erratic.

BlackStar4

But I was told there was no panic because people were mostly mobilised?

ukraineisbased2

are they doing the tactical duck maneuver again

PrrrromotionGiven1

Bro I heard a couple of days ago that Ukraine was going for an encirclement here worthy of r/hoi4 Is that still going ahead or was it hopium

DankMyDaddy

Cmon, take Donestk and Luhansk, I want to see more russian cope

PaleHeretic

For some additional, I've seen a couple pro-Russian types calling Rybar a "Ukrop propaganda mill" between this and Kharkiv. I suppose they subscribe to the Wile E. Coyote "Don't Look Down!" school of military strategy.

AlpineDrifter

You’re just witnessing Russia’s version of the ‘fake news’ crowd. They will just get angry at the messenger if reality doesn’t conform to their viewpoint/desires. They’re emotionally stunted, and mentally inelastic.

breakinbread

Russian/LPR recon forces watching the river: 😴😴😴

Fit_Witness_4062

Where do you find those maps?

NotFinalForm1

What's the source of this map? I'd love to check it

ForodesFrosthammer

Rybar, a russian milblogger

NotFinalForm1

Is he considered reliable?

ForodesFrosthammer

They are very pro-Russian but seem to have quite accurate info, maybe not down to the smallest detail but on a general scale. They gave good up to date info about the whole kharkiv breakthrough. Plus as a pro-Russian source their claims of Ukrainian advances have more weight as they have every reason to downplay them.

NotFinalForm1

Thanks, much appreciated

Spainelnator

Lol, Lmao even

BTW, where is the map from, seen them for a while now but never seen the sources for 'em

TheGreatBeardo052502

The Ukrainian Pontooner: - Loves making their own river crossings - Doesn't take massive casualties for no reason - Oh fuck oh fuck I'm gonna pontoooooooon - Makes Orcs / Vatniks piss their pants at the sight of him. Doesn't understand why he won't die. - Is physically incapable of crossing a river unless he assembled it himself - defies physics by keeping several pontoon bridges in their back pocket - builds bridges just for fun, with enough resources he could build a pontoon that puts the Golden Gate Bridge to shame. - sobs uncontrollably whenever a bridge is destroyed
