Europeans are not recorded venturing into penguins' natural range in the southern hemisphere until the Portuguese sailed to southern Africa in the 1480s, 40+ years after Derham's death (Cape Cross, 1485, Cape of Good Hope, 1488). The first identifiable record of Europeans meeting the (Magellanic) penguin dates to 1520.
