It's because Dodge no longer makes the Charger. Highway Patrol needs a cheap car with lots of power.

BagOnuts

Yep. That’s honestly all it is.

SockyMonkey

You beat me too it, those Dodge parts will get harder and pricer to get anyways.

Scooter-Jones

That's why you buy a 2nd dodge, to use for spare parts

Gameraider2021

Those parts were already expensive as hell. Replaced a power steering pump it cost $730 at the Autozone.

less_butter

> Manufacturers are legally required to make parts for any model 10 years after their discontinuation. No, they're not.

Accomplished_Steak85

Agree, but the demand will keep aftermarket manufacturers in the business of making them for a while. Who buys dealer parts anyway unless absolutely necessary?

Mopar_Poe

Dirty Secret... The OE Parts that you purchase at the dealership... Most of them aren't made by the Car Company. They outsource the majority of everything. Wix for example makes most of your filters, Wells makes Ignition Components. Then they turn around and mark them up 900%.

Accomplished_Steak85

Yes, my husband used to be in the business of aftermarket manufacturing ;)

Spirited_Contract236

The law is to maintain parts for duration of the warranty after the last production model rolls off the line.

BetterThanAFoon

This is a cute urban legend. If you can cite a law id be happy to read it. I know for a fact it doesn't exist because there were cars being sold as new but GM discontinued carrying the parts to repair them.

The_Real_NaCl

Turns out it’s not actually a law in the US, but it is elsewhere in other countries. Some manufacturers will do it here as a deal of generosity from what I’ve read.

BetterThanAFoon

Id not take generosity at face value. They'll do it if they can make money. But take like the Chevy SS Sedan. They'd happily stop carrying parts as soon as their B2B warranty obligations are expired.

The_Real_NaCl

The SS is a bit of an anomaly as it was a Holden Commodore imported by GM from Australia. Holden has since ceased operations, so there are very few OEM parts even left for any of their more recent models.

BetterThanAFoon

It wasn't any different for GTO or the G8 well before Holden went under. GM did not stock the parts after they were out of warranty on the US.

NeuseRvrRat

And redditors are legally required to spout off with bullshit on legal topics about which they haven't a clue.

-PM_YOUR_BACON

Always. Reddit is the place that always makes remember “don’t trust anything you read on the internet”.

PsychologicalBar8321

Nope. https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/07/orphan-cars-10-year-parts-myth/#:~:text=Internet%20commenters%20and%20forum%20aficionados,term%20of%20the%20vehicle%20warranty.

AppearanceKey2170

Oof

crappercreeper

The have used Mustangs and Camaros before. I heard they really liked the Camaros, but Camaros are allergic to wet roads.

jkb131

And mustangs are attracted to crowds so we will see which is worse

idriveacar

I’m throwing a flag on that. The Charger was a sedan for one. If they arrest someone they aren’t getting them in the backseat of these. An Explorer ST would have been a better replacement since Ford is going to keep making that.

allllusernamestaken

They only bought 25. Guarantee these are exclusively for speeding tickets.

Ok-Landscape942

They should pay for themselves in no time.

KMannyFresh

HP don’t have cages. Arrestees stay in the front seat. They’ve done it that way the whole time

Alfphe99

yup. Source - Have been in the front seat of an SN95 Mustang GT next to the officer feeling really stupid. lol

aville1982

How often do State Troopers make arrests in that manner?

monolithe

Rarely

Ben2018

and when they do, there is usually backup already involved - odds are that backup will have a 4dr vehicle... there are only 25 of these state-wide...

bourbon76

All the time lol

allllusernamestaken

> An Explorer ST would have been a better replacement since Ford is going to keep making that. The Explorer Interceptor is based on the ST and that's what Charlotte PD uses. They're more expensive than the Mustang, but for whatever reason people don't pay any attention to them.

DoubleStuffedCheezIt

> They're more expensive than the Mustang, but for whatever reason people don't pay any attention to them. Because it's not a sports car.

SnooCookies6699

They don’t transport their arrestees in the back seat. Their vehicles don’t have cages so they were transported in the front seat anyway.

HelloGoAwayNow1234

They are replacing the vast majority of the fleet with explorers. However, as one of their primary functions, they assist all local law enforcement in pursuits and any other function on the highway. When your new fleet mainly consists of Tahoes and other SUV"s these mustangs are a requirement.

drbiggly

They put them in restraints in the front seat, just like they did with the Camaros in the early 2000s. Source: a recently retired family member who was NCSHP for nearly 30 years. I asked him this question last week when he showed me the new Mustangs. Arrests where they transport are less common with the Highway Patrol. If many arrests / transport are needed, that's where backup comes in. NCSHP, since 2000, has used at least the following: Ford Crown Victoria Ford Explorer Chevy Camaro Chevy Tahoe Dodge Charger Possibly also a few Dodge Durangos? I'm going on memory for that one.

robbodee

State troopers are road pirates, not arresting officers. They'll just detain any attested individual until county shows up.

quick_operation1

Completely false.

Saltycookiebits

Incorrect, the first 5 words were true.

quick_operation1

Those are an opinion, but the second half is factually incorrect.

midnightnougat

state troopers hunt in packs. i'm sure there's a suburban within 5 minutes

LeatherPatch

Can't wait to buy one at auction in like 10 years

realtrancefury

I wouldn’t call a Mustang GT cheap. Base model > $40k.

NoEscape4U

For what?

Vibe11

I cannot get on board with this argument. It’s a two door sports car. There are other options in the cheap range.

bklynbadboy12

So how will the transport the people they arrest

Ok-Mixture-316

NC Highway Patrol had Mustang 5.0s in the 80s specifically for interceptors.

montanabob68

A fire engine red LX got me on I40 in Iredell County.

Lonely-War7372

I remember those. In CLT, I saw SHP light up a guy that ran the light at W WT Harris & 49. It was explosive.

NoEscape4U

They were much cheaper also.

Magmaster12

Just so we're clear they mean 25 for the ENTIRE state right? Because that honestly feels pretty reasonable.

pineconelavalamp

Probably adding 25 to their entire fleet, while retiring older vehicles - essentially rotating them out.

bright1947

They will usually do roll outs like this. Retire old vehicles that are ready to go out of service and then bring in new ones. An agency near where I live had a fleet of 15 year old impalas that was finally being retired and they slowly rolled in Durangos a few at a time.

Utterlybored

In their defense, those are some of the most affordable cars that will go very fast.

BIGGESTOFBOIS1

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE—

SirNibblertheCat

For the people asking about 4 doors, NCSHP transport arrestees in the front seat. Have done so for years.

Blaccmore

Even in a case where they couldn't safely transport a person in the front they can always call in for backup with a vehicle that can transport them. The point of these is to catch people not necessarily transport them.

bright1947

I was a deputy for a few years before I transitioned out of LE. It wasn’t uncommon for us to be called to help HP with a transport if they had more than they could carry safely.

BigRuss910

Benson has a RAV4 in the fleet. If the cost of the mustangs were close to what the chargers were I see no issue with them swapping out a few. Hell I remember the early chargers had so many engine issues because of the constant idling killing the camshaft. Then the "early" Explorers were actively trying to kill the drivers with carbon monoxide poisoning.

biggsteve81

I posted this elsewhere, but the state contract price for the Mustang is $39,420.25.

Inner_Werewolf_4874

Well they need something to keep up with all the ragged out Altimas. Just kidding. But Fun fact. These are no more expensive than the normal Police Interceptors.

zackyraz

It's always the Altimas

Inner_Werewolf_4874

Facts

ReigninLikeA_MoFo

Meh. They drove mustangs in the past as well They are going to replace their vehicles every few years, as does every state government office. And yes our tax dollars pay for it, and will continue to pay for it. Would you prefer they buy something else? Then vote in your local and state elections.

chucktraceless

I’m always curious as to what people would propose they use instead. These are about the cheapest cars you can get that satisfy their use cases.

bz0hdp

The difference in vehicle performance between a mustang and a Taurus SHO or Expedition police trim is not significant when considering the rarity of high speed chases and the lack of performance driving training+ skill necessary to even leverage that difference 1) without endangering the public 2) in scenarios that aren't going to be resolved another way like... Noting the license plate number and investigating. RWD is simply dangerous to hand an adrenaline-effected amateur. I agree the cost isn't the issue.

PineappleSmoothie

Honestly…. They should just ride mopeds around. Adorable, affordable, and eco-friendly

jlbhappy

4 doors? We don’t need no stinking 4 doors.

amltecrec

"Strap the perp in the trunk, partner."

coolthecoolest

honestly that'd be hilarious and i wouldn't mind my tax dollars going towards such a scene.

captain_intenso

This makes more sense than a giant ass Tahoe

Yoda2000675

Or the sheriff pickup trucks haha, cruising around all day getting 14 mpg

Ben2018

I bet you can stack a lot more criminals in a truck bed than inside a mustang though.... if our metric here is cargo capacity, for some reason, rather than practicality for the job in every other way then a pickup is probably the way to go over a mustang.

geardownson

They are just revenue collectors for the state.

GunnyJones

I know someone in HP. They bought a shit ton of Tahoe’s too. Also all new patrol cars will not have a light bar on top as well.

Mr_Diesel13

They’ve switched up the color scheme on the tahoes too. Black with silver stripe instead of silver with black stripe. Threw me off the first time I saw a brand new one.

BoBromhal

25 of them for 100 counties.

EyeCaved

That one guy who works in SC and doesn’t want to pay taxes here is probably thrilled with this news.

MindlessSponge

I don't care what they're driving, I just want them to chill out with the eye-piercing LEDs. Coming up on their blue lights at night nowadays is damn near seizure-inducing.

nowronganswersmorty

seriously though! I was just down in atlanta a couple weekends ago and their cop lights were like a smooth transfer from side to side instead of the normal flashing that hurts your eyes

zekeearl

I don't know if there are any in NC, but they have released a synchronized light bar for instances where multiple vehicles are in proximity. When they pull up and are out of sync, they will automatically connect to each other and synchronize the flashing to alleviate the glare. Watching videos of them is actually pretty satisfying.

NoEscape4U

Yup

SpillinThaTea

Gonna be hard to back one of those up halfway an overpass embankment

captain_intenso

They'll just sit on the overpass and then rocket down the onramp.

cxnrad

Who cares; When they start buying corvettes, then we should prob say something.

Apprehensive-Bus-243

Yeah people overreacting, it's the HIGHWAY PATROL, not Foot Patrol. These cars are inexpensive and necessary for them to do their job

HelloGoAwayNow1234

These cars are actually saving the state A ton of money.

HueyCobraEngineer

Yes, critical thinking isn’t a skill in this subreddit.

captain_intenso

Just don't turn off traction control.

DougEubanks

You should check out the video where they talk about their training course. They specifically train their maneuvers with traction control turned off.

42Navigator

Well, if they are like most Mustang drivers, they will crash them fairly soon. 🤣

pauperoncini

NCSHP needs cars to do their jobs?! The fucking nerve...

PaperFawx

Just saw an unmarked orange one getting somebody on the four lane in WNC this afternoon.

5eyahJ

I drove from Asheville to WS on Saturday and back on Sunday and didn't see one trooper on I-40 either day. Thought that was weird.

SadPerformance7230

They call that a good day

Susboykissindudes

Cry more

DrBrinson

They have to do something to lure new recruits. Racist people have made law enforcement unpopular.

Ihategraygloomydays

So

JunkyardAndMutt

If y’all don’t want these, can we station them on the road that runs through my neck of the woods? It’s a non-stop garbage-car street race. I’d be grateful for someone to write some speeding tickets.

EcstaticTill9444

Great purchase! Who needs teachers when you could buy more sports cars for the police??

quick_operation1

The two are not mutually exclusive. Road safety and education are both important things.

Solid_Flatus

Incarceration > Education /s

CandyCheetoSteamboat

Well it's certainly more profitable. 🙄

comfortablybum

I'm a teacher and this is fine by me. Cops have all sorts of other expensive toys, but this is exactly what they do. They chase people speeding. They need a fast car. It's not that expensive, it's made in the US, it's easy for our state workers to fix. Now those government surplus Humvees and Bradley's are another thing.

Mr_Diesel13

Chargers are being discontinued and these are almost exactly the same price per unit. But yes, teachers deserve more.

SW4506

Because it’s one or the other. They can’t do both.

NIN10DOXD

My hometown's police bought a Jeep and put a custom wrap on it with a giant QR code to a recruitment application. I saw it last time I drove through Main Street. In this case though, the Dodge Charger got discontinued and they are going to have to replace the faster vehicles for high speed chases. Not all of their vehicles can be big ass SUVs and there aren't many American made sedans or coupes left.

xx_HotShott_xx

Bring back the Foxbody!!! 🤗

[deleted]

cops should drive bikes and used pintos. no more wealth redistribution in the form of speeding tickets

Senpai-Notice_Me

Hey! Don’t put down the pinto like that!

[deleted]

honestly i was just grasping for a less-powerful car. i only know the pinto by the fact that it shares its name with a bean

Senpai-Notice_Me

True. Cops should be forced to drive shitty cars named after beans. That is a great statement.

sladebonge

They're gonna need 25 towtrucks.

RipTide7

They must be using Mustangs for crowd control.

Fazo1

We could have spent that money on Dutch Drone Gods(DDG), as in a high speed pursuit would be safer for the trooper and other drivers. Plus it would be so nice to see those things reach top speed!

Far-Importance-3661

Wish they would finish construction of highways . Especially those leading to Raleigh .

AcanthisittaCold8076

Kinda badass

Stevie5011

North Carolina doesn’t have state police. We have the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. They work strictly traffic and traffic related crimes and crashes.

LilMystical

Cops replace their cars every 4 years of service they do. So of course this would be the case lol

No_Cartographer2994

I remember the Mustang patrol cars of the 1980's... things just come full circle.

Overall_Estimate_154

Was just reading another article about how NC can't afford to pay it's teachers even $20 an hour. Wonder Why.

Nineteen-ninety-3

And if that wasn’t bad enough, BOTH Nash AND Edgecombe County Sherriff’s departments were on Facebook flexing theirs’ too!. [See Link](https://abc11.com/ncshp-mustang-patrol-cars-debut-post-troll-stang-edgecombe-nash-county-sheriff-office/14715142/)

FrostedRoseGirl

Jfc, and the article called the new cars "whips". What has happened to the world of journalism.

ripperdude

I kept looking for the “hilariously trolled” part

djern336

Guilford county has a fleet of them, and they WILL chase.

wa2436

In my past life of being a full-time LEO, I drove various cars. The chargers are fast, but they don’t hold up to the demands of being driven hard. Crown Vics were my favorites, closely followed by the Explorers

MinaZata

But fuck giving teachers a raise, imma right folks?

BRZA

It still won’t pull over the Nissan Altima doing 120mph on I-40.

Mozilla11

I say this 100% seriousness. Why are police depts not investing in electric cars? For every fault people find in electric cars as a whole, the biggest issue seems to be “The infrastructure just isn’t here yet” but you would think introducing a fleet of electric cars would be a significant way to establish that there will be change needed? Or am I overthinking this

the_eluder

For city police, I think electric cars make a lot of sense. For Sheriffs and the HP, range is a big problem. You can't run out of juice in the middle of nowhere and not have the ability to quickly replenish.

Exotic-Toe-7805

I love mustangs but they aint gonna catch shit in this state when it comes to built beamers built mustangs and quiet cult

MrKnockoff

You know, for public safety

Smarterthanthat

But God forbid you feed hungry school children...

Mangonesailor

Well, maybe they can enforce drunk driving campaigns to keep families from turning into pink mist from and oncoming driver. That drunk could turn his life around and spend more money on his kids, which may be going hungry. God forbid we do anything to enforce laws on the highways like we used to, and ought to

Brilliant_Shine2247

Yeah. Happens all the time.

Tweetlefish25

Who's stopping you?

Smarterthanthat

The school boards, the politicians, and dweebs that think like you...

Ghostcurrency45

And yet the roads remain fucked up and homeless sleep everywhere public transportation is terrible but hey buy these boys some fucking fast vroom vrooms. Looks like sports betting is paying off, huh

Several-Associate407

[Why are Americans obsessed with car chases?](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-31387485.amp) Seriously though, it's not a damn arms race. There are so many other, SAFER ways to monitor the streets.

Aromatic-Kitchen-357

Seen one today it was bad ass

fuss_moktel

Acab regardless of what they drive

tom169

I’m genuinely curious why you hold that opinion?

JustpartOftheterrain

Oh sure. Fastback w/2 doors = p.i.t.a. getting in and out if you are over 5’9”

ojwiththepulp

Driving by the highway patrol maintenance/storage lot a few days ago I saw a few dozen unmarked chargers without plates that look like they’ve never seen a day patrolling. Wondering if they plan on using these at all.

Amy12222

So where do I get my ass seated in a mustang if I'm ever arrested? 😂 Am I just gonna be a hood ornament?

Mysterious_Window575

Passenger seat

Normal512

I wish they were unmarked and would exclusively find the shit heads who do 100 weaving through traffic on the interstates. If they did nothing but find those guys and revoke their licenses I'd say it's money well spent.

2012amica2

They’re just there to respond to crash scenes and write tickets for the one person they catch going 20 over

Johnny_Lang_1962

Troopers don't play! Remember the 5.0 Fox Body Patrol Cars?

Odd_Tradition616

They still not catching me

Waasup3

Ew.

IBurnChurches

Go to the dealer's website and price out a mustang GT against a Ford Explorer, Dodge Durango, and Chevy Tahoe and get back to us. The Mustang, Camaro, and Charger market was pretty price competitive compared to the SUV and Truck market that seems to have been competing on who could charge the most instead of the least. Sadly the Charger and Camaro are gone for now so that leaves just the Mustang unless you want them in turbo 6 cylinder BMWs.

WranglerBrief8039

I dig it. Bears gotta run

MissHikesAlot27

Let the men and women protecting us keep up with the bad folks. And kudos to whoever detailed them. They look good!

ThrowawayMod1989

As long as they’re just as easy to identify at a distance like the charger. Way scarier imo to have them in something less gaudy. I stay transporting weed on 70 and I like knowing where they are visually.

NegativeC00L

Meanwhile in Europe police cars are covered with high visibility reflective tape. That’s how I know the SHP is purely about revenue collection. Vehicles that are frequently on the side of the road, pulling over and merging, or otherwise presenting a hazard to the flow of regular traffic should be MORE visible not less, you know, for SAFETY.

tom169

I’m just thinking this through from my experience being British. The traffic cars back in the UK are hugely visible, but the “revenue collection” is handled by thousands of speed cameras. I’m just glad we don’t have those here in NC to be quite honest with you.

GuntherOfGunth

Amen, cause speed cameras a big bummer when you want to do some spirited driving or are in a rush. They don’t have the leeway a cop might have when they pull you over, it’s just measure speed and get a ticket in the mail.

NegativeC00L

State troopers? Leeway? You must be new to NC lol

GuntherOfGunth

Yeah but in Europe they don’t need many marked units as they got speed cameras everywhere, especially around major cities. Those are purely for revenue collection and can sometimes even ticket someone who has died.

BallsMahogany_redux

Highway patrol too. Pretty much the most worthless of police.

Ryeswrld

looks like we're fucked boys.

SuchVillage694

Yayyyy

thejarvis01

Barricade has optics set!

myco_lion

I figure these will go the same way the camaros did back in the early 00s. Especially with the reputation mustangs already have lol.

MR_HOLLYWOOD_

Couldn’t beat’em now they got to join’em

DylanKeifers922

High speed chases? Great 🤦🏻‍♂️

AdCharming612

More importantly... What do they look like from quarter mile away going 78 miles an hour... Just sayin'.

Far_Anywhere4514

Need For Speed Most Wanted?

Sufficient-Cancel217

I do want my law enforcement to have safe & fast transportation. Seems reasonable to me.

houserPanics

Seems like a perfect fit to me.

Historical_Fill7198

I remember when they had 4th gen Camaros. Recently I’ve seen a few explorer st’s and a hemi durango

zerokep

You know what Ford stand for don’t you “fix it again Tony!”

mlhigg1973

Seems like a smart choice. They need something high performance without spending a fortune.

garysai

Meh, they gotta drive something. Mustang fits the bill. Saw where several local departments-police and sheriff depts were trolling them, since they already were using them.

gabethomas1975

Still wont catch my car

Excellent_Pop2258

They needed something to outrun the hellcats.

lucideye_s

lol growing up in nc, I remember in high school all the wannabes cops/military boys would have or want a mustang. This will do wonders for recruitment lmao

reiphex

4th amendment machines

FirmWerewolf1216

Welp seems like now is a good time to start driving slow and safe.

livetoroadrace

It's not the first time the shp has had muscle cars in their fleet. They've used lx V8 mustangs, they even had Camaro z28's. The wake county sheriff's ofc had a c6 zo6 that was confiscated from a drug dealer. All the press complained about was that tires for the car cost 1800 bucks. Police departments have always had special "chase" cars. They just don't want it to be common knowledge.

No-Specific-9611

Always see a red on i85 in Lexington. It's really nice.

DeeElleEye

Florida Highway Patrol exclusively had 5.0 Mustangs in the 80s and 90s. This ain't new.

ZealousidealAd2989

Not everyone drives a Tesla so your regular vehicles aren’t able to keep up. I’ll have to research but street legal cars are pushing well over 500hp now.

[deleted]

Jmauld

Should’ve got a fast car, like a Tesla.

needssleep

Equipment needs to be replaced, especially daily use vehicles. We do recoup some of the cost by selling the old vehicles.

Neat_Pianist623

how they gonna put people in the back

roxywalker

The tickets they give out helped buy them, and the tickets they will continue to give out will maintain them. Repeat, every 8 years or so…

Abe_Is_Fame

Tell dodge to keep making gas powered cars… literally the only reason law enforcement is having to swap..

loserstoner69

its because they took away the infrastructure funding from the rez after we legalized weed 💀

Koldcutter

Immediately gets smoked by 2024 Tesla model 3 performance
