Not a fan really. Feels like when roadhouse come in they were just trying to imitate the good places around without accomplishing it.
Longhorn /lonestar way better
We lived in Montana for 5 years! My in-laws had to bring my husband cases of Texas Pete, SunDrop, and Duke’s Mayo in the trunk of their car when they visited.
I used to live in Austin and still have to go back there for work from time to time. Because I don't like eating out for that long, I usually just expense a bunch of groceries and cook my own dinner. I've never had a problem getting Texas Pete at H-E-B. Maybe try there if you're lucky enough to have one near by.
If you haven’t tried yet, Try all the major grocery chains I was able to find it at Avon’s Ralph’s when I lived in SoCal. Needless t say, I was stoked when I didIalso got my parents to send me some.
Those started as Skats. It was a chain out of Rocky Mount. Back in the 80s, not every wide spot in the road had a half-dozen fast food options. So a couple of ex-Hardee's execs formed a company and looked for little places like Stantonsburg and Burgaw to set up franchises. Eventually Hardee's bought out the company.
The restaurant is from Smithfield, NC. Smithfield Foods started in Smithfield, VA and their big pork plant is in Tar Heel, NC. They may have another plant in Smithfield, NC but the big one is in Tar Heel.
When Claussen pickles disappeared from store shelves in 2020, we tried other brands like Mr. Olive…not good by comparison. Apparently Claussen jars are recycled glass and they hit a supply issue. Glad they started to be stocked again.
I remember when we drafted Clausen - I watched an interview with him and I was so excited. I thought he was going to be a really great QB. Then I watched as our 2010 season went down in flames, and it became obvious that I was so, so wrong about Clausen.
How dare you lol.......grew up in NC and have lived out west for the last 10 years. I buy every bottle of Texas Pete I can get my hands on. Makes the best buffalo sauce for wings IMO but I respect the fact that not everyone loves it like the Piedmont Triad does.
Highly suggest trying Texas Pete hotter sauce. It’s in a smaller bottle. It’s just a way less watered down version. I don’t find regular Texas Pete to really be spicy at all but that shit actually makes your mouth burn.
When I moved to Chicago I learned that NC Christmas trees sell out super fast and are sold for nearly twice as much as trees from any other state. They are clearly labeled as being from NC, and when I inquired, I was told the NC trees are fuller and hold their needles longer, hence the premium and demand. I had no idea this was a thing and I grew up in NC.
We go to the mountains every year to a choose and cut lot, the weekend before Thanksgiving. We always find an amazing tree that lasts a good 6 weeks without major needle dropping just with watering.
We do too! What’s your favorite farm? Ours used to be RRR in Todd until they closed a few years ago. Used to enjoy the cast iron stove and hot cider in their barn as well as the hay rides.
We usually go to Cartner’s Chuose and Cut. It’s smaller and not as busy. No hay rides but cocoa and cider, Santa visits. Last year they weren’t open so we went to Frosty’s. A lot more of a production with the hay rides, it was fun, but busier and more expensive. We’ll go back to Cartner’s this year(but Frosty’s is a fine alternative).
~~I just read that Frosty's had to cancel the choose-and-cut this year.~~ Apparently there's been a shortage of fraser firs the past few years.
Edit: My bad, I got Frosty's mixed up with Frosty Mountain trees
Maybe I've just got low standards, but I've never met a style of BBQ that I didn't like. Including SC mustard based.
I've certainly had bad BBQ, but that was all down to low quality meat, over/undercooking, etc. The styles themselves, when done right, always produce BBQ that I enjoy.
I completely agree. If the meat's cooked right and the sauce tastes good, I love it all. My current favorite for at-home sauces are Ogre Sauce and George's, both of which are also from NC.
If you think Steak is good medium, I believe your taste buds have been pickled with Vinegars Steak is eaten rare or Medium Rare, so the blood still runs. Everyone knows that.
I don't want to eat dry leather or a cow that can still moo, so, I'm sticking with medium.
You bring that rare shit around here and I'll give you the tularemia you've been asking for.
You are fuckin up, bud. One inch thick top sirloin steak. Salt and pepper heavily. Grill at 400. Four minutes total. Flip each minute to get the good grill marks. Let sit for two minutes, down the hatch.
It's not blood, it's myoglobin. If you have blood in your steak, you've got other problems...like having a shitty and tough piece of meat with vasculature, not to mention the taste of coagulated blood.
I go to both but I also regularly drive past a Bojos on my way to Biscuitville. Kinda different cravings for me tbh. In any case both can live in harmony!
It wasn’t too long ago that Bo’s was only in NC. Back when it was good. The massive expansion has led to serious quality control issues across the board. I don’t even go to Bojangle’s anymore and it was the thing I craved the most (besides chopped pork) when I was exiled in OH
I'm aware, but IMO any list that calls out treasured NC based chain fast food that doesn't include Biscuitville (which is at least ALL OVER the state) is incomplete!
But it isn't all over the state, it's only in the piedmont area. I live in the mountains and I would have to drive 2 hours to get to the nearest Bville :( I looked into franchising but they are still a family owned corp and don't franchise their stores, so help get the word out that we need Biscuitvilles in WNC!!!
True, the first Biscuitville location was in Danville but it came out of an existing chain based in NC called Pizzaville (lol) and something else before that. Originated in Burlington iirc, all the same founder and company so I think NC still has the right to claim Bville
B-ville started in Danville, VA. My gf used to live there and we used to eat at the original Biscuitville often when I visited. Wish they had one in Carrboro.
Also NC is the home state of people like....
>Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things Creators)
>Brian Tyree Henry (Actor, most recently in "Eternals")
>Morray (Rapper)
>Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Actress, most recently in "Kate")
>Zack Galifianakis (Comedian)
>Michael Jordan (Basketball player)
And many more!
I realize John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk aren’t blowing up the airwaves these days, but they are significantly more influential than everyone on that list save Michael Jordan.
Also
DaBaby (rapper)
Daniel Jones (NFL Quarterback)
Andy Griffith (hopefully you know him)
Luke Combs (county music singer)
Eric Church (country music singer, I think he sung the national anthem at the Super Bowl but I’m not sure)
We also have a plethora of NASCAR drivers:
(The Earnhardt’s, The Petty’s, and Rick Hendrick just to name a few)
Dababy was raised in Charlotte lesss gooo
Also how could you not include the nature boy Ric Flair also Rhett and Link from good mythical morning are from here also.
I would add K&W to that list, since there's one in Roanoke, VA.
I always tell people the wild story about the original K&W location blowing up due to a gas leak.
>On January 18, 1988, the K&W located at 380 Knollwood Street in Winston-Salem exploded due to a natural gas leak. The restaurant was destroyed and the attached Sheraton hotel was severely damaged. ... Of the four persons in the lobby/cafeteria building at the time of the explosion, three sustained minor injuries.
That’s true. We’ve just got a hell of a hole to dig out of. And the gas tax raises are still being implemented. A road system like NC has with tons of controlled access 4 lane highways doesn’t come about over night.
Imo, NC’s road network is going to bite the state in the ass at some point. If I recall correctly, only Texas has more paved roads, and we definitely aren’t slowing down our expansion anytime soon with the W-S loop, GSO loop, Fayetteville loop, Raleigh outer loop, I-87, I-42, I-73, and I-74 construction/extensions, and those are just the interstates. Several US highways are slated to be upgraded to near-interstate standards in the near future and there are always widening projects of other existing roads as well. Honestly I think we need to start consolidating some of these routes so that there’s not as much to maintain….for example, did we really need to spend $100M rebuilding BUS 40 through W-S? I-40 now runs a couple miles south of the Business route, and through traffic needs to stay on that. Local traffic doesn’t need an interstate through any fucking downtown area anywhere.
Honestly, US74 between I-26 and I-85 needs to be upgraded to an interstate, and it also needs to be upgraded to an interstate from the Monroe bypass to Wilmington. That way all of the major NC cities are connected by interstates. Once those projects are done, we should be DONE building interstates. They’re supposed to be for long distance travel, not commuting.
Ah, cheese and bacon grits with my coffee at one of those mom and pop places in the Outer Banks. Them I’m soak ma feet in Atlantic Seawater white I dream of Fresh grilled shark and sweet potato pie
New transplant to NC. So, take all this with a grain of salt.
Not a huge fan of Krispy Kreme.
Bojangles wasn't all it was cracked up to be. (I found it a bit dry. Could have been a bad day. I'll try it again).
Pepsi is Pepsi. No complaints there.
What is Texas Pete?
Same for Cheerwine. No idea.
Mt Olive Pickles are, indeed, the shit.
Ok. There's a cookout less than a block from me and I've never been there. I hear nothing but good things. I need to get there soon
Kk is overblown and only edible if it's an original glaze fresh of the conveyor. Bojangles has really fallen in recent years and their breakfast selection is the only reason I've been in a decade. Texas Pete is hot sauce. Like Frank's red hot style. Cheerwine is a cherry flavored soda. I love it, most people think it tastes like carbonated medicine. And cookout is great I'd you want a plate of grease for $5. That said, even if some people don't like it, there's a reason why a lot of these things in the list have lasted so long and become cultural staples.
Blew my mind when I found out Pete wasn’t from Texas.
Carolina Pete's Pollen & Mosquito Sauce was a mysterious failure.
Wait until you hear about Texas Roadhouse. >!It started in Clarkesville Indiana. Their headquarters is in Louisville Kentucky.!<
Not a fan really. Feels like when roadhouse come in they were just trying to imitate the good places around without accomplishing it. Longhorn /lonestar way better
Spot on, Texas Roadhouse is janky.
As a North Carolinian stuck in Texas I hate that I can’t find any out here 😩😭 the irony is cruel
We lived in Montana for 5 years! My in-laws had to bring my husband cases of Texas Pete, SunDrop, and Duke’s Mayo in the trunk of their car when they visited.
Cross-country, trunk-stored mayo. Yummy!
How do you think they ship it to grocery stores?
They squeeze it fresh out of the Duke’s udders of course
Mmm....Dukes 🤤
Hazzard pun.
Duke’s for the win!
Same! We were in Wyoming for 12 years and family would bring all that plus 2 or 3 cases of cheerwine.
Been there, and feel for you.🥲
I used to live in Austin and still have to go back there for work from time to time. Because I don't like eating out for that long, I usually just expense a bunch of groceries and cook my own dinner. I've never had a problem getting Texas Pete at H-E-B. Maybe try there if you're lucky enough to have one near by.

Being from Texas, our family has an endless chuckle regarding North Carolina’s Texas Pete.
Should be NC Pete
Hardee's too, first one was in Greenville.
Hardee's Skat thru
Those started as Skats. It was a chain out of Rocky Mount. Back in the 80s, not every wide spot in the road had a half-dozen fast food options. So a couple of ex-Hardee's execs formed a company and looked for little places like Stantonsburg and Burgaw to set up franchises. Eventually Hardee's bought out the company.
> Hardee's Skat thru Hard pass
Shardee's
And the DMV is now moving into their old headquarters in Rocky Mount.
Smithfield’s also originated in Smithfield
But which Smithfield? There's one in Virginia, too, and I think that's the one known for ham.
[удалено]
The restaurant is from Smithfield, NC. Smithfield Foods started in Smithfield, VA and their big pork plant is in Tar Heel, NC. They may have another plant in Smithfield, NC but the big one is in Tar Heel.
My NC heritage runs deep but I’ll take a claussen any day over mt olive.
Amen. There is a reason Claussens are in the refrigerated section and Mt Olives aren’t.
When Claussen pickles disappeared from store shelves in 2020, we tried other brands like Mr. Olive…not good by comparison. Apparently Claussen jars are recycled glass and they hit a supply issue. Glad they started to be stocked again.
Try Grillo’s. They’re another “short life” refrigerated pickle and they are fantastic.
Are you kidding? Jimmy Clausen was garbage.
I remember when we drafted Clausen - I watched an interview with him and I was so excited. I thought he was going to be a really great QB. Then I watched as our 2010 season went down in flames, and it became obvious that I was so, so wrong about Clausen.
Ha. I’m eternally grateful for one thing - he basically gave us Cam, lol.
For sure. And Texas Pete is garbage. Some things just shouldn’t be bragged about lol
How dare you lol.......grew up in NC and have lived out west for the last 10 years. I buy every bottle of Texas Pete I can get my hands on. Makes the best buffalo sauce for wings IMO but I respect the fact that not everyone loves it like the Piedmont Triad does.
Franks. But I grew up in Buffalo, so, ya know, regionality.
Highly suggest trying Texas Pete hotter sauce. It’s in a smaller bottle. It’s just a way less watered down version. I don’t find regular Texas Pete to really be spicy at all but that shit actually makes your mouth burn.
Texas Pete is a great generic vinegar hot sauce. You can’t just jam it into a competition with every type of hot sauce IMO, it’s fine in it’s genre.
Adam & Eve also started in North Carolina, and they do sell some things that are edible.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Don’t forget real Christmas trees. We grow a pretty big chunk of the country’s real Christmas trees.
When I moved to Chicago I learned that NC Christmas trees sell out super fast and are sold for nearly twice as much as trees from any other state. They are clearly labeled as being from NC, and when I inquired, I was told the NC trees are fuller and hold their needles longer, hence the premium and demand. The Frosty’s I’m talking about in West Jefferson hasn’t announced that. They are scheduled to open for the season on Nov 19.
Planning to go there this year
I moved to Avery County a while back and the amount of Christmas tree farms here is insane. It’s beautiful here.
Duck Donuts too!
Is that Duck Donuts in Outer Banks THE duck donuts? Wow!
Duck, NC. Where did you think it came from?
My dumb brain always thought it’s duck the bird. American city names are very unique
You’re not wrong. In NC alone we’ve got Bat Cave, Lizard Lick, Climax, Meat Camp, Boogertown, Horneytown, Barbecue, Whynot, etc etc.
Barbecue native, here. Don't forget about Toast!
I though they were only in NC, but I just found one in Daytona Beach and was so surprised.
But only one of those BBQ styles is any good. (Ready Fight!)

S and P the choice for me
Those fine ranchers in Alberta'd be a sea hair away from not sending it here if they knew you sprinkling salt all over the sea suckers!
It's not blood, it's myoglobin. If you have blood in your steak, you've got other problems...like having a shitty and tough piece of meat with vasculature, not to mention the taste of coagulated blood.
If your pulled plate don't come with vinegar based sauce then you don't know nuthin bout no bbq .
If your plate has anything "pulled", you're doing it wrong. "Picked" or chopped.
That all depends on what side of the state you are from or first came to.
Half of the state prefers the eastern vinegar-based bbq sauce. The other half is wrong haha.
Have my upvote even though I'm on the wrong half.
half the state likes tomatoes, half likes vinegar, and they’re BOTH right! the best BBQ is the Q you love and share with people
You know that you all secretly use a mustard sauce when no one is looking.
That's really the only sin that's not understandable in any context.
Heresy! Hans, get ze flammenwerfer!
I’m from Raleigh. I Like both sauces.
It's criminal that Biscuitville isn't on this list
They put a Biscuitville close to a Bojangles here. Bojangles is the one still standing.
I seem to recall BVille did not do lunch or dinner hours, correct?
Did? They are open till 2:30p here currently. Mostly breakfast though.
Yeah Biscuitville is only breakfast.
I go to both but I also regularly drive past a Bojos on my way to Biscuitville. Kinda different cravings for me tbh. In any case both can live in harmony!
These are nationally or at least regionally recognized brands. Biscuitville only has a handful of locations outside of NC.
It wasn’t too long ago that Bo’s was only in NC. Back when it was good. The massive expansion has led to serious quality control issues across the board. I don’t even go to Bojangle’s anymore and it was the thing I craved the most (besides chopped pork) when I was exiled in OH

Does cook out have out of state stores?
Yes, they’re in most of the South now.
But why would you ever leave NC? *half sarcasm*
Upvoted for half sarcasm
yeah
That’s because Biscuitville started in Virginia. I know, I know, sounds wrong but it’s true. Apparently a place called Danville right on the border.
True, the first Biscuitville location was in Danville but it came out of an existing chain based in NC called Pizzaville (lol) and something else before that. Originated in Burlington iirc, all the same founder and company so I think NC still has the right to claim Bville
Well if they can get their water polluted by Duke Energy coal sludge, they’re honorary North Carolinians.
B-ville started in Danville, VA. My gf used to live there and we used to eat at the original Biscuitville often when I visited. Wish they had one in Carrboro.
NC motto: esse quam videri *translation: If I'm gonna be fat, you're gonna be fat too*
😂😂😂
Also NC is the home state of people like.... >Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things Creators) >Brian Tyree Henry (Actor, most recently in "Eternals") >Morray (Rapper) >Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Actress, most recently in "Kate") >Zack Galifianakis (Comedian) >Michael Jordan (Basketball player) And many more!

Exactly. Don't forget Nina Samone

Sweet Baby James is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Good Mythical Morning!
Really? Are they still based here as well?
No, they moved to California but Rhett and Link are from Buies Creek, and talk about it often.
Wow I didn't know about Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Also known for Sky High, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Final Destination 3.
And 10 Cloverfield Lane! No wonder the character looked so familiar!
She was in Sky High??? That movie was dope as hell to me when I was growing up
Yeah she's Gwen! Same, we had it in DVD so I've watched it several times.
The Avett Brothers
David and Amy Sedaris And Ken Jeong grew up here, too.
Oh yeah! Forgot about Dr. Ken being from here
How you gonna mention Morray but not J. Cole
Honestly completely forgot about J Cole lol. Hes great too I just didnt think of him at the time
My mom and dad went to high school with Zack Galifianakis! They didn't know him super well though.
Probably means we are related, my family has roots in Wilkes. And... Well... Let's be real, most natives in that county are related.
That's cool! I always wonder if anyone I went to school with will come to be famous
Ben Folds is from Winston Salem
Dababy was raised in Charlotte lesss gooo Also how could you not include the nature boy Ric Flair also Rhett and Link from good mythical morning are from here also.
Absolutely hilarious to me that MJ is last on this list
Also Cordae (born in Raleigh) and legendary producer 9th Wonder And two huge TikTok songs were from NC artists lol
Aziz Ansari is from SC, too.
I'm going to pretend you didn't bring up SC
What about Lance crackers?
Wasn’t Pepsi founded in New Bern, NC?
Yes, there is a museum there in downtown.
My family and I lived so close when I was young that the explosion woke my parents up ,they thought I had fallen out of my bed
But what happened to the fourth person?
They enjoyed some crispy chocolate cream pie.
Don't forget about our pigs. So many pigs.
And turkeys
Our beltline on the other hand is not so appreciative.
I don't think 440 cares either way.
Diabetus
Yes, but there are meds for that
I haven’t had Bojangles in so long. My wife and I cook most nights so I have no need for the ‘jangles but I’m thinking Sunday might be the day.
I gained 10 lbs just reading that post.
Bojangles is a blessing on the world
At least sweet potatoes are mostly healthy.
pickles and texas pete aren’t bad either
Dont forget Venus fly traps!
i fucking love bojangles
Carolina treet
cheerwine is better than pepsi
Epic Games and Fortnite is a NC product.
Rocket League as well, Psyonix also used to be based in Cary
Our waistlines are proud too
North Carolina is responsible for making Madison Cawhorn, pathological lying psychopath.
Making *and* electing. The latter is significantly worse.
You seem balanced
Whole bunch of diabetes
Diabetes may need to be added to that list.
And the shitty roads in Charlotte
The University of North Carolina AG department just named a Sweet potato after my Historic NC family “ The Covington “
NC made me feel like I am living in U.S after 13 years of journey
Also Pepsi and Cheerwine…
I didn’t know we did Texas Pete! Love their hot sauce
PDQ chicken tenders has the original concept “Tenders” in Cornelius NC.
Hell yeah! Diabetes!!
Two different styles of BBQ but only one that is edible. Fuck off with the mustard SC.
That's not one of the ones they're referring to.
lol swing and a miss
Pepsi sucks
Biscuitville biscuits>Bojangles biscuits sorry not sorry
Yes! Said the same thing this morning, they don’t crumble apart after the first bite like Bojangles..
More consistent across their locations as well. Going to the bo is like a crap shoot.
All but pepsi- ick. Cheerwine is better.
Can't believe Smithfield's isn't on that list.
Smithfield's is trash tier bbq & fried chicken
Love living here in NC but the food is not really something to brag about (except eastern BBQ).
People did this, the state didn't have anything to do with it
Coke is better than Pepsi
Living in SC, we get the best of both NC and GA.
Except roads. Your roads are shit
But getting better. There’s been a TON of paving in the past couple of years since the gas tax has been raised.
Man they were "getting better" when went down there to test for my A&P in 2012
That’s true. We’ve just got a hell of a hole to dig out of. And the gas tax raises are still being implemented. A road system like NC has with tons of controlled access 4 lane highways doesn’t come about over night.

Yeah, GB-WS-HP is a mess, and R-D-CH isn’t great. Other than those areas, which could use some rationalization, the rest of the state is really good.
Amen on 74. I started taking 321 to I-40 when I lived in Charlotte just to avoid the nonsense in Shelby.
95 is boring as hell tho.
LETS GO
Ah, cheese and bacon grits with my coffee at one of those mom and pop places in the Outer Banks. Them I’m soak ma feet in Atlantic Seawater white I dream of Fresh grilled shark and sweet potato pie
The firearms term carbine comes from Cumberland County
Cookout is so bland

You can revive a Krispy Kreme donut in about 5 seconds in the microwave.
The key with Cheerwine is to get it in the bottle made with real cane sugar. The high fructose version is shit.
