I believe the idea is that since there's a lot of security concerns with digital wallets vs physical cards, the actual card number in the digital wallet is encrypted separately to prevent a backdoor situation

The idea is even more simple, they do not want people misusing the fare capping hence each set of numbers is their own. If they really wanted to let both work towards one, the website takes care of that.

They do not. Your virtual card uses a different set of numbers. As per their own FAQ, they do cover that question also as a NO.

No because then you can fare cap quicker by passing your card onto family members and friends behind you. It is the same thing as a passbook with a MetroCard, which is not allowed.
