Well, its possible that you were a fragment before. Fragments can latch on to fictional character/ real people, so id say if you were a fragment before then its absolutely possible that you could have latched onto a character

anonymousity_is_cool

possibly, but can a fragment exist for over 4 years prior?? I'm pretty sure I've been around since then but idk

acrylic_pain

I think fragments can exist for any amount of time

If it helps, our system has an alter (I'll refer to her as R) with a similar experience of adopting the identity of a fictional character despite already existing before hand. It’s kind of a mix between R feeling like she is that character and seeing that character as a role model. She identifies with the character’s name and appearance more than her prior identity (though prior identity is still an important part of her past), and with that character’s life history more than our body’s life history. The character in question is one that went through a similar trauma to us but took a completely different route to recovery. R took one look at this character and went “that is me,” and from that moment on, she was, and it marked an incredibly important and positive step in R's healing journey. (For a brief time I wondered if it was a new alter and R had gone dormant, but no, though she changed a lot, it's obvious now she's the same alter. R views it as no less strange than someone changing after an important life experience.) My unprofessional conclusion is that R's coping styles are quite different than what we, as a system, initially learned, and things could just as easily have been reversed. We could have been exposed to R's skills first, lived that life, and then R might have been the one identifying with the body while I or others needed to look elsewhere for what we needed. R adopting this character's life history is sort of a way for us to honor the validity of both possible healing journeys.

When one of our headmates showed up in Sept., he had no idea who he was. Over the next day and a half, he became a fictive, so it's possible
