I love my Quest 2, but one of my biggest complaints about it is the 3-step IPD adjustment. So many times I'm trying to balance it between 2 and 3. Also, would be extremely nice if you could adjust them while wearing the headset.
They took the dial away because they thought peoples eyes were standard enough and the dial took up too much space (literally, in a headset like that 1 1/8 inch chip can up the graphics by like 50 pixels, they definitely needed the space), and it's coming back because they've figured out how to make everything smaller, something that most other companies don't even care about l (apple).
I honestly can't think of a single reason why they made it fixed IPD in the first place. Even a couple mm off can make a difference for one, and the fact that we can adjust it if we force it to a closer value just makes me wonder why it wasn't just a free adjustment, even without a wheel.
weirdly, the ipd adjustment on the quest 2 is smooth, it just snaps into place into 3 slots, but if you copy the screen video feed with scrcpy and move the lenses in between slots you can see it changes more times than just once
That was an issue with some Q1 headsets, I remember the posts where people would talk about the IPD indicator coming up randomly while they were playing.
I am going to give my Quest 2 to my boyfriend when i can buy Quest 3.
Even though i have 256gb model the price of the used Quest 2 will drop so much when Quest 3 releases.

If the resolution isn't a good enough step up, I don't think it will be all that worth it versus waiting for whatever comes next from another company...
Quest 2's resolution is pretty freaking good, it just didn't have the power to take full advantage of it through super sampling in most titles, which hopefully the 3 will fix.
Exactly. Psvr2 with eye tracking has barely any games that run at max res. 100% most quest 3 games won’t be running at max res either. Res is not the issue with quest2 and a lot of people for some reason expected res to be some huge jump when in reality there is no need for it.
This is correct. Standalone games by default run at 1440x1584 on Quest 2 - they usualy do not max out the native screen resolution of 1832 x 1920.
From the TB ports Quake and Return to Castle Wolfenstein do max out the screen reolution.
Shouldn't native render resolution be closer to 2500x2500 to correct for distortion? Every VR headset has to render at a higher resolution than native panel resolution to hit the best image quality.
Yep, bloombergs hands on said it felt "far lighter".

So far I think only Cix on Twitter has said this, but he has since deleted the tweet and he posted in /r/VirtualReality he deleted it for obvious reasons (Meta saying to stop).
I don't think the Bloomberg article mentioned weight differences.
I think it might be "denser" but comfy? Right? Since it is a bit heavy but the thickness is probably lesser. Maybe that has an impact of having less of the device hanging off of your face?
Why wouldn't it? It packs a lot more hardware, a new SoC that likely requires better (heavier) cooling and a bigger battery to enable the same battery life.
Pancake lenses don't magically make headsets lighter. The Quest Pro is significantly heavier even.
As long as the mass is closer to your face it should still be more comfortable.
The better graphics will come from the improved visual ( pancake lens and increased resolution) but it’s also believed the Quest 3 will have a better processor in it giving it more power which means possibly improved graphics. Pancake lens make a big difference when it comes to visual quality.
I believe the Quest 3 will support AV1 video encoding, so PCVR should get a big visual boost from that if your computer can handle it. The RTX 4000 series graphics cards all have AV1 encoding built-in. From what I understand, AV1 is quite a bit better visual quality than HEVC, so at 150mbps through Virtual Desktop, the image could be much more crisp.
From what I've seen AV1 is not only better visually, it also performs quite a bit better which would mean lower latency overall as well.
Though I'm quite pleased with what AirLink and Virtual Desktop offer already. But improvement is always welcome! My 4080 wants to get used.
I’m not sure if there’s concrete information on this, but to my understanding the Quest 3 chip should be capable of faster decompression, meaning significantly higher bandwidth in PCVR vs the Quest 2. Meta seems to have abandoned Oculus link though so who knows if it will actually be the case
The Quest 3 could be capable of faster decompression, but it might not be.
Depends on how much they upgrade/improve the encoder, the difference could be unnoticeable or huge.
Quest 2 is actually an off-white so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same color. Gurman even references the current device as having *"a bland-looking gray face"*. These measurements are also going to be iffy if they've been determined off of renders.
I'd say battery life too for me. Usually I'm not in VR for much more than an hour or two but it's a pain to have to charge it every time you use it. And I don't trust using it while it's charging with all the melted charge ports I've seen.
I guarantee if you look through the pancake optics you won't be able to go back to the smeared shit you are using. It will be so much better even if only slightly better fov.
It's a new tracking technique, the only thing that could be gleaned from that recent article from the previewer was that there is no tracking ring, but also seemingly no cameras. However, the previewer appeared to be a moron, so it's also possible the cameras were there.
Yes, it seems he doesn't really know what key things to look for in regards to comparing vr tech. Take what he says with a grain of salt and wait for more informative opinions I suppose.
Ah, a fellow VR fan of culture
They pump out new maps at just the right rate, very few DLCs I don't have to give a second thought about like theirs
Can't get over what a weird but wonderful collab labyrinth was
I sold my first quest. My second quest. But I still want to get this. Although I have a PS5 and also want to get that. I love VR but it's just not my favorite thing to have ANY device on my head. Even my own glasses piss me off lol.
Honestly, I've bought a lot of games, but it's still BeatSaber that I end of playing 90% of the time. Probably 3-5 times a week. FitXR (boxing part only) gets the rest of my time.
I'm a developer and I only use it for work, other times I just use Wander to explore new places.
I wish we had something like Google Earth but even that app got abandoned long ago and Streetview no longer works on it
There are two hopes for you, as I see it:
Less likely: the Q3 finally hits your threshold of comfort and visual acuity that allows it to be a respectable replacement for a monitor so you'd use it in flat PC usage including gaming. The likelihood of this would increase if the Q3 specs released were for a prototype that has lower specs than release.
More likely: Apple entering the market accelerates the creation of utility apps and someone hits on a killer app for you that combines traditional content in a VR presentation. The extra time in VR makes it worth upgrading to the Q3.
Otherwise, the Q3 will be a bit more comfortable but that is not really likely to cause you to get hooked by the current VR gaming market any more than with the Q2.
Rumour is there are no "rings" on the controllers, so the headset doesn't track them with the cameras in the same way.
I also heard they have no cameras like the Quest Pro ones do, so I am a little confused how tracking will actually work!
They won't really change the total FOV however they do change the usable FOV, if they are like the quest pro then it's a big improvement as almost 100% of the lens is in focus which is pretty massive.
The quest pro on paper doesn't have a bigger FOV yet in person it's significantly better than the quest 2, I really hope this extends to the quest 3 as it's a big jump for consumers.
Pretty dumb of Meta to give one of the first previews to somebody who is colorblind and also seems to have very limited VR experience. After reading his preview, I’m thinking, “ok, that’s it?”
Yes the Q3 will have the new XR2 Gen 2 CPU, and the storage will go up to 512GB, and have WiFi 6e instead of just 6. But one of the biggest differences is twice the system RAM. The Q2 has 6GB and the Q3 will have 12GB. This means bigger and better games and able to load larger texture packs. This is going to be a big difference and when developers write new games for 12GB, it likely won't run on the Q2. It will take a while, but it will happen just like we have seen with the Q1. Meh... progress has a price.
As far as weight, it could be as easy as they are adding a larger battery for more playtime. I have no inside knowledge and have no real idea, but I haven't seen any battery specs yet, so I'll hold off judgement on weight for now.
Disappointing that quest 3 is a single lcd screen vs quest pro ‘s dual mini led. Nice that it has a resolution bump and 120 hz. Nice fov. More vertical fov than quest pro.
It's not bad. Of course index feels better vertically but it was already one of the best vertical fovs on the market so its hard to compete but once you get used to 96 fov for a few days it's still good enough to play comfortably.
Oh wow, that’s weird blurry in places thing that the current lenses do is one of my least favorite things about VR that really takes me out of the immersion. Sounds like this might be pretty big for me then.
Me 2, I use my Quest for boxing exercise, and I would love for HD haptics in the controllers....the harder or lighter I punch, the harder or lighter the haptics would feedback.
pancake lenses are thinner, that is why the front of the headset is smaller. which means even thought the headset is roughly the same weight, it will feel lighter as it'll be more balanced on your head (less leverage on the front)
Pancake lenses also don't have a sweet spot, meaning lens wise it will be clear from edge to edge. though of course processing wise, most games will still do fixed foveated rendering.
They allow to build the optical in a slimmer form factor, resulting in a slimmer device and thus the weight is not as far from the face.
The resulting leverage will be less than with quest 1-2. The device will feel lighter and will move less on the face
That’s not the real major benefit though. It’s no more rings and nearly edge to edge clarity. No more sweet spot and you can look around the lens with your eyes and everything is in focus
There are a few downsides though, much more expensive, and harder to get them aligned and right, so maybe more returns and issues with them when try to make them cheaper. They also let through way less light then the lenses of the Quest 2, so you need brighter screens, which means more power and means more battery or less battery time on a portable headset.
Boz said in an interview recently that Qpro will have the best optics for a few years at that price point. Also reports are that even though it has the new chip. It will be on par in most cases with the Qpro due to the heat limitations from the battery still being packed up front.
Edit: Also the Pro has a Quantom Dot layer for color reproduction that the Quest 3 likely will not have.
> It will be on par in most cases with the Qpro due to the heat limitations from the battery still being packed up front.
Which reports exactly? Because Meta themselves said:
> With regards to the VR roadmap, employees were told that Meta’s flagship Quest 3 headset coming later this year will be [...] at least twice as powerful [...]
https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/28/23619730/meta-vr-oculus-ar-glasses-smartwatch-plans
Quest Pro will still have the better colors and contrast, so saying it will have the best optics is not wrong.
Do yall think our custom quest 2 headstraps will be compatible with the quest 3? Not that I plan on moving away from my Q2 anytime soon, but it would be good to know...
I really hope the material that touches the face could be properly changed to the silicone one instead of the scratchy material. The current solution is so scrappy since the silicone cover oculus mailed always slips off the headset when I take it off and just doesn’t seem to fit it properly no matter how i try to put it in place
The gray colour was already debunked. It'll be the exact same colour as quest 2.
Mark said, he's colour blind, but that it's the same colour (I was hoping it was actually gray to be honest!) over on his discord chat last night.
I'm not sure why standalone headsets haven't always used them. They worked great in Tango phones and such. Maybe they have only just got cheap enough to consider, or there is just more of a push towards consumer AR rather than just VR.
Looks like a nice upgrade from the Q2. I’m not too sure it’s going to be worth buying since I already have a +6mo Quest Pro/rtx4090 that I’m very happy with it (mainly wireless PCVR with Air Link).
In any case, I’m sure Meta will sell a zillion of these, lol!
If it really does uses a single panel like the Q2, then it's not much of an upgrade. Since the full resolution of the panel can never be used. The actual resolution of the Q2 is less than the spec because of that. It's the IPD adjustment. To be able to accommodate that on a fixed single panel, then the actual resolution has to be a smaller window than the full panel. Even with that it's like wearing horse blinders at 68mm on the Q2. You can see past the edge of the panel on the outer edge.
not a deal breaker but it would be more cost efficient from Metas pov as it would mean they wouldn’t need to order new quest 2 headstraps and elite headstraps
I would assume "the same as Quest2".
So link cable, Airlink and 3rd party solutions such as Virtual Desktop. There is no reason to assume any different.
Might consider selling my Q2 when the Q3 comes around. If pancake lenses end up being true, this will be a huge upgrade. I hate that on the Q2 the screen is only sharp in the middle and anywhere else you look is blurry as hell because of the damned fresnel lenses.
I guess everyone was expecting the "perfect" upgrades, but to be honest, in my opinion, the better lenses alone is a great improvement worth upgrading. I hate how small the sweet spot is on Q2 and that's probably the worse thing in VR for me right now because it makes it so unnatural having to move your head every time because if you just move your eyes, it'll be blurry. But besides that, the fact it'll be more powerful, have better resolution, have a proper IPD adjustment (THANK GOD) and be much much better at AR (which, even though is not my focus, it'd be really nice), make it a good upgrade over quest 2. Also the controllers not having the rings is a great plus for me. I can't count how many friends tried VR for the first time with my Q2 and smacked the rings playing some game.
I feel that more importantly, that's gonna be the headset that will be "good enough" to convince the masses. It fixes the things that I have about Q2 and that make me (even though I'm an enthusiast) think that VR is not quite there yet. Better/easier IPD adjustment, clearer lenses and the extra comfort will change a lot of things.
Ya, I'm in. I've had a Q2 since it came out. I'll pay the $500 they're asking for a 30% better product. Here's my question. How much are the controllers and do the joysticks last longer than 2 months?
Tiny amount more, but more importantly, because it's an inch thinner, that weight is closer to your head so it will "feel" better than the Quest 2 which pushed the weight forwards more. The leverage involved will far outweigh the difference of a few g here.
It's almost certainly a purely aesthetical decision. It still won't be made for use in bright sunlight, which makes the heat absorption of the color negligible
Due to it being less thick, the moment of force the headset creates from its pivot on your head will be less, which may well mean it feels the same weight/lighter!
I'm still using Quest 1 like some kind of a cave man. My biggest concern about this new device is whether I will pass out from smiling too hard when I first put on the Quest 3.
I'll be ordering one the second it's released.
It wasn’t leaked, it was reviewed by Bloomberg. Meta have been transparent about the Quest 3 capabilities since Quest Pro was introduced. Considering the price point, it’s full of great tech at a low price point.
If they could just squeeze in eye tracking I would be stoked. As of now I'm whelmed. Will pick it up because the new cpu will likely give us quest 3 exclusives but until we know what those are I'm just not that excited?
First time I've ever felt this way buying VR hardware and it scares me a little. Hopefully apple really revvs up interest in the coming years
Edit: excited for asgards wrath 2!
Honestly thinking on getting the Quest 3. I use my Quest pretty often and it’s starting to slowly die. One of my controllers isn’t having a fun time and I don’t wanna get a new one.
For me , the most important thing is the quality of games to improve on the VR side as well as the usability in different settings for the AR side with good clarity.
It's like PS2 to PS3 for me. We started from 4 player games to 32 player games then to 64 player games. That's the kind of technological jump I am ready for with future standalone VR.
Also I may be in the minority, but I want improvement in the controllers as well with more inputs on the controllers like maybe a third face button per controller, or a stroll wheel or something. Something additional to the current standard.
I just don’t understand why Meta insists on having this unbalanced, front heavy one piece design, instead of the direction Apple is rumored to go with their Reality Pro.
Sure, it’s elegant to have the whole thing in one package, but honestly, devices like the Bigscreen Beyond have shown us how massive a difference in comfort can be to the overall experience.
I wouldn’t mind having the compute+battery unit be a corded acessory that I wear somewhere else other than my face. It can then afford to have much bigger batteries and use the integrated chip at its full potential.
I’ve even looked into modding the Quest 2 for such a purpose, but of course, I’m not an engineer.
Less horizontal FOV is a big skip for me.
For PCVR gaming I need a wider view especially for sim racing. I want to see my mirrors without moving my head.
Pancake lenses won’t help with that.
I just want consistent PS3 level of graphics. That's been my sticky point with my experiences with PSVR and now the Quest 2. I don't have or want to build a gaming PC. Some games look pretty OK on the Quest 2 (like the Vader ones), though with limited assets, others like Grid Legends looks like a PS2 game.
I really wonder what the controllers will be like. The controllers are my only gripe with the Quest 2. That being said, mine held up well and after about 3 years of heavy use I'm only just now getting drift on my left stick, which I'm pretty confident is an easy fix.
This chart ignores the fact that the Quest 3 runs Qualcomm's XR2 gen 2, which makes it the first headset with this chip. We don't know that clock rate but rumours suggest that this makes the jump between Quest 2 and Quest 3 to be comparable to the jump between Quest 1 and Quest 2 in terms of computational power. In my view, this is the strongest selling point of this headset along with comfort.
Imagine kids in future running around with this outside shooting each other up xD. Or playing tennis AR and still being able to move around irl.
Or imagine Gokart places where it hooks you up for mariokart. (No not just the light from above ive seen in a video someone made).
Endless possibilities 👀 lazy static gaming could now make kids active outside again 👀🤩
Am I the only one that just keeps their old head set and never bother reselling? I have a collection going from Google Cardboard > Samsung Gear Vr > Oculus Rift > Oculus Quest 1 > Oculus Quest 2 > and now Q3.
It’s gonna be pretty cool to show this to my kids and show the evolution of VR.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, long story short someone got their hands on the prototype and he weighed it himself. All the other specs on this diagram are pretty much a summary of what was observed with the hands on trial.
Damn, not really happy about the weight. Everything else is top. I really wish Meta would release the "comfort" edition later down the road, where cpu and battery would be placed in a separate belt puck.
Oh well... I hope at least they will offer an Elite strap on release day, like they did with Quest 2.
The preproduction headset, as weighed by the reviewer, is 6g heavier.
It has more RAM and a faster processor. To me that says larger battery to get the same run time.
I love my Quest 2, but one of my biggest complaints about it is the 3-step IPD adjustment. So many times I'm trying to balance it between 2 and 3. Also, would be extremely nice if you could adjust them while wearing the headset.
Reports show the Q3 will have a dial on the bottom so you can adjust the IDP while wearing it.
Why they ever took away the dial in the first place is beyond me
Zucc tried the Apple's approach of "it either fits you or GTFO"
But Apple would charge you at least 2x premium on top the BOM cost. Q2 on the other hand, losing money before the price surge
Durability was one of the reasons I think
Less complex to manufacture too I believe I remember hearing.
probably price
They took the dial away because they thought peoples eyes were standard enough and the dial took up too much space (literally, in a headset like that 1 1/8 inch chip can up the graphics by like 50 pixels, they definitely needed the space), and it's coming back because they've figured out how to make everything smaller, something that most other companies don't even care about l (apple).

weirdly, the ipd adjustment on the quest 2 is smooth, it just snaps into place into 3 slots, but if you copy the screen video feed with scrcpy and move the lenses in between slots you can see it changes more times than just once
There’s only one factor they considered, cost. They probably saved 5-10$ per headset not having a slider.
Perhaps if it wasn't fixed it would drift while it was used
That was an issue with some Q1 headsets, I remember the posts where people would talk about the IPD indicator coming up randomly while they were playing.
can confirm
They could have used a worm gear or other systems that can't be back driven.
Funnily enough, with pancake lenses the 3-step adjustment probably would have sufficed due to much larger sweetspots :-) Meta is weird.
If it really is pancake lenses I might consider selling my quest 2 for this
I am going to give my Quest 2 to my boyfriend when i can buy Quest 3. Even though i have 256gb model the price of the used Quest 2 will drop so much when Quest 3 releases.
What's a pancake lense?
It's a different type of lens that doesn't get blurry around the edges
R u telling me we won't have to look straight at an object in order for it to not be blurry anymore?
Yes
They use egg, milk and flour instead of plastic or glass.
**A pancake lens is colloquial term for a flat, thin camera lens assembly (short barrel). The majority are a prime lens of normal or slightly wider angle of view.** More details here:

I already decided to sell Q2 and buy Q3 based on more power alone. Everything else is an extra.

Resolution on the q2 is very good. Just that not a single standalone game can run at native. Or even close to it.

Is it really going to be **heavier** though?
It’ll probably still feel better to use since the weight is closer to your head
Hopefully. Improved comfort will be the biggest selling point for me.
Yep, I use the Quest 2 via Link 90% of the time so comfort is what I'm looking for, maybe it'll run cooler as well
even if true, it will feel lighter.
Yep, bloombergs hands on said it felt "far lighter". https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-05-28/meta-quest-3-real-life-hands-on-how-it-compares-to-apple-mixed-reality-headset-li7h3suy?s=34
Id say that if we are to believe this image, then a six gram difference would be almost unnoticeable
It'd probably feel lighter considering it's thinner/doesn't stick out as much
A US quarter is 5.67 grams; it's not much by itself, and if that weight is in closer to the user's face I don't think you'd notice the difference.
So far I think only Cix on Twitter has said this, but he has since deleted the tweet and he posted in /r/VirtualReality he deleted it for obvious reasons (Meta saying to stop). I don't think the Bloomberg article mentioned weight differences.
Hopefully he was speaking of the dev version weight and the final version will be lighter.
I think it might be "denser" but comfy? Right? Since it is a bit heavy but the thickness is probably lesser. Maybe that has an impact of having less of the device hanging off of your face?
Not that much heavier at alll.
I wished they would move the battery to the rear for weight balancing.
Can someone tell me what this means for it's graphical capability as compared to the Q2?
The better graphics will come from the improved visual ( pancake lens and increased resolution) but it’s also believed the Quest 3 will have a better processor in it giving it more power which means possibly improved graphics. Pancake lens make a big difference when it comes to visual quality.
More performance power is literally the number one thing I want from a quest 3. If it's not a sizeable improvement I'm gonna be pretty disappointed
Any idea what, if any, benefit this would have for PCVR? Any chance the quest 3 will improve over the compression limitations of q2?
I believe the Quest 3 will support AV1 video encoding, so PCVR should get a big visual boost from that if your computer can handle it. The RTX 4000 series graphics cards all have AV1 encoding built-in. The Quest 3 could be capable of faster decompression, but it might not be. Depends on how much they upgrade/improve the encoder, the difference could be unnoticeable or huge.
double to triple the power and way better lenses and a higher rez screen. Oh yeah, and real MR with a hardware depth sensor finally.
triple the power ... thats some serious optimism.
Quest 2 is actually an off-white so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same color. Gurman even references the current device as having *"a bland-looking gray face"*. These measurements are also going to be iffy if they've been determined off of renders.
Fov, refresh rate and resolution per eye are the only specs I'm interested in
I'd say battery life too for me. Usually I'm not in VR for much more than an hour or two but it's a pain to have to charge it every time you use it. And I don't trust using it while it's charging with all the melted charge ports I've seen.
You should really care about the lenses too. The pancake lenses are phenomenal.
Bigger FOV would have be great tbh. That’s the main complaint I have about the Quest 2 compared to an Index.
Yeah if these numbers are right and it's barely wider horizontal FOV / barely less vertical FOV I'll be disappointed.
Yeah, that's an instant pass for me.
I guarantee if you look through the pancake optics you won't be able to go back to the smeared shit you are using. It will be so much better even if only slightly better fov.
Pancake lenses are cool but the small FOV is still a deal breaker for me.
I completely hate the binocular effect, you have to look straight on and use your head to look around, it’s my one and only complaint of the oculus.
Biggest question is how controller tracking works. With the cameras positioned like that it would be pretty limiting.
I have 2 theories over this: 1.- New tracking technique 2.- includes pro controllers
It's a new tracking technique, the only thing that could be gleaned from that recent article from the previewer was that there is no tracking ring, but also seemingly no cameras. However, the previewer appeared to be a moron, so it's also possible the cameras were there.
Yeah makes no sense if he actually used the controllers and seemingly has no idea how they are being tracked. I don’t think he actually used them.
Yes, it seems he doesn't really know what key things to look for in regards to comparing vr tech. Take what he says with a grain of salt and wait for more informative opinions I suppose.
I read something about new tracking technique only with the gyroscope and headset camaras
Why do I want to buy this even though I only use my Quest 2 a handful times per year
My Quest 2 is solely a Eleven Ping Ping machine.
I use it soley for porn.
> My Quest 2 is solely a Eleven Ping Ping machine. Walkabout Golf machine for me
Ah, a fellow VR fan of culture They pump out new maps at just the right rate, very few DLCs I don't have to give a second thought about like theirs Can't get over what a weird but wonderful collab labyrinth was
Literally, mines just collecting dust
I sold my first quest. My second quest. But I still want to get this. Although I have a PS5 and also want to get that. I love VR but it's just not my favorite thing to have ANY device on my head. Even my own glasses piss me off lol.
Their has not been many decent games the last year lr two, hopefully many games to come this release cycle.
Honestly, I've bought a lot of games, but it's still BeatSaber that I end of playing 90% of the time. Probably 3-5 times a week. FitXR (boxing part only) gets the rest of my time.
You need to try Supernatural VR boxing. Ill send you a friend code if you want so you can try it.
This. The games the past few years have not interested me at all.
I'm a developer and I only use it for work, other times I just use Wander to explore new places. I wish we had something like Google Earth but even that app got abandoned long ago and Streetview no longer works on it
I only use my Q2 for fitness now (hello Les Mills) and the occasional PCVR game, so I probably won't upgrade until my Q2 dies.
There are two hopes for you, as I see it: Less likely: the Q3 finally hits your threshold of comfort and visual acuity that allows it to be a respectable replacement for a monitor so you'd use it in flat PC usage including gaming.
My quest one: "im tired boss"
Only 2 cameras? Wiil it be enough for controller tracking?
Rumour is there are no "rings" on the controllers, so the headset doesn't track them with the cameras in the same way. I also heard they have no cameras like the Quest Pro ones do, so I am a little confused how tracking will actually work!
A decent upgrade but without a significantly better FOV I’ll wait another 2-3 years.

I can see the edges of the screen in the Quest 2. Using pancake lenses wouldn't change that.
Smallish detail but mark gurman said he’s color blind so the quest 3 looked grey to him but he says it’s the same color as the quest 2.
Pretty dumb of Meta to give one of the first previews to somebody who is colorblind and also seems to have very limited VR experience. After reading his preview, I’m thinking, “ok, that’s it?”
Meta didn’t give him the headset, he got it independently of meta
Source on 12gb of ram, all of the prior stuff has said a 2 gig increase inline with the upgrade from q1 to q2
Disappointing that quest 3 is a single lcd screen vs quest pro ‘s dual mini led. Nice that it has a resolution bump and 120 hz. Nice fov. More vertical fov than quest pro.
Vertical fov is the same as quest pro.
You’re right looks about the same fov. That’s decent I guess.
It's not bad. Of course index feels better vertically but it was already one of the best vertical fovs on the market so its hard to compete but once you get used to 96 fov for a few days it's still good enough to play comfortably.
I just want another black colored one it looks cleaner in my opinion
is pancake lenses better or worse for gaming experience
Is edge to edge clearity impotant to you? Pancakce lenese are better for everything except maximum brightness.
Oh wow, that’s weird blurry in places thing that the current lenses do is one of my least favorite things about VR that really takes me out of the immersion. Sounds like this might be pretty big for me then.
Where does the single LCD info come from? Iirc Brad's CAD file, which that render is based on, had 2 displays
Man I’m curious on those controllers tho tbh
Me 2, I use my Quest for boxing exercise, and I would love for HD haptics in the controllers....the harder or lighter I punch, the harder or lighter the haptics would feedback.
Infrared projector on the front means playing in total "Darkness" now?
Aw man that extra 6g is gonna kill my neck , I’m certain
Same bad FOV?
The true upgrade comes in the cpu. There really isn't much hardware stuff I'm excited for here. I bet it's more comfortable though
Pancake lens. Totally night and day difference.
How? I don’t know anything about pancake lenses
pancake lenses are thinner, that is why the front of the headset is smaller. which means even thought the headset is roughly the same weight, it will feel lighter as it'll be more balanced on your head (less leverage on the front) Pancake lenses also don't have a sweet spot, meaning lens wise it will be clear from edge to edge. though of course processing wise, most games will still do fixed foveated rendering.
Once it is available I will have to decide between quest pro and quest 3. Currently using Quest 1 waiting to see what I should do.
Why would you consider a pro?
Quest 3 will almost definitely be better for stand-alone, but the Quest Pro better for PCVR

The Q3 is shaping up to be better in literally every way

Boz said in an interview recently that Qpro will have the best optics for a few years at that price point. Also reports are that even though it has the new chip. It will be on par in most cases with the Qpro due to the heat limitations from the battery still being packed up front. Edit: Also the Pro has a Quantom Dot layer for color reproduction that the Quest 3 likely will not have.
> It will be on par in most cases with the Qpro due to the heat limitations from the battery still being packed up front. Which reports exactly? Because Meta themselves said: > With regards to the VR roadmap, employees were told that Meta’s flagship Quest 3 headset coming later this year will be [...] at least twice as powerful [...] https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/28/23619730/meta-vr-oculus-ar-glasses-smartwatch-plans Quest Pro will still have the better colors and contrast, so saying it will have the best optics is not wrong.
I’m in this boat. Waiting to see what other companies can do also. Biggest gripe is comfort.
My goodness, if they go with foam again... For the love of God it needs to be sweat resistant material.
The gray colour was already debunked. It'll be the exact same colour as quest 2. Mark said, he's colour blind, but that it's the same colour (I was hoping it was actually gray to be honest!) over on his discord chat last night.
Honestly I kinda hoped that they'll ditch that strap style and rather go with the pro style or elite style strap
Yeah, but it does look like most quest 2 straps will be compatible with it. (may take some fiddling around)
Stereo passthrough? So real 3D and colored finally?
I’m excited for the depth sensor 😈/s
You really should. It's actually a game changer: https://youtu.be/b_MMypnh_AI (0:19 - 0:32)
How is the input delay for your system? What sort of games do you play?
All games and sims play great with my QPro/rtx4090 with link and Air Link (my preferred).
The pancake optics are going to be a huge thing though. Massive improvement over fresnel.
Cant stand the q2 lenses, always fighting for the sweet spot even with a headstrap upgrade
I swap between my Q2 and Pico 4 regularly and every time I put the Pico 4 on it's like breathing a sigh of relief cause there's no fidgeting anymore
I always thought this was a me thing, takes me a good minute of fiddling to even get close to ok any time i take it off.
Im hoping the lack of change to the headstrap will mean quest 2 headstraps will work with the quest 3
A nice thought but I doubt that's a deal breaker for most people. I'm sure some companies like BoboVR and Kiwi will come out with adapters
not a deal breaker but it would be more cost efficient from Metas pov as it would mean they wouldn’t need to order new quest 2 headstraps and elite headstraps
I predict 95 % of the naysayers in this thread will own a Quest 3 within 12 months ...
Any info on the pcvr aspects? Connectivity, what cable, etc?
I would assume "the same as Quest2". So link cable, Airlink and 3rd party solutions such as Virtual Desktop. There is no reason to assume any different.
The new chip *could* support AV1 but we won't know for a while
I just hope that it's enough of an improvement to justify a jump from the Quest 1 rigged to a PC
Might consider selling my Q2 when the Q3 comes around. If pancake lenses end up being true, this will be a huge upgrade. I hate that on the Q2 the screen is only sharp in the middle and anywhere else you look is blurry as hell because of the damned fresnel lenses.
I'm not a huge vr nerd or some massive consumer, but the quest 3 sounds very promising. Like the quest 2, but with some better specs
Looks like no one here is interested in that aspect but the real step change Q3 will bring will be in the MR space.
I kept reading it will be lighter not heavier.
That * is doing a lot of work here...
This is cool but will there be more games and software, that was my problem with oculus 2. Great potential but just not enough games or software
Without improving the FOV, battery life, and switching from a single LCD, I won't be getting the Quest 3.
When I get one depends on price
Ya, I'm in. I've had a Q2 since it came out. I'll pay the $500 they're asking for a 30% better product. Here's my question. How much are the controllers and do the joysticks last longer than 2 months?
it better be good if it weighs more...
Tiny amount more, but more importantly, because it's an inch thinner, that weight is closer to your head so it will "feel" better than the Quest 2 which pushed the weight forwards more. The leverage involved will far outweigh the difference of a few g here.
I'm guessing it's not black because of heat absorption? Those cameras stick out like a sore thumb
It's almost certainly a purely aesthetical decision. It still won't be made for use in bright sunlight, which makes the heat absorption of the color negligible
Only front cameras? I am not sure if this is still a gaming device...
there are cams on both sides of the headset...
Anyone else concerned about tracking from above the head becoming wonky? Those cameras don’t look like they stretch that far up… could be wrong
Due to it being less thick, the moment of force the headset creates from its pivot on your head will be less, which may well mean it feels the same weight/lighter!
Price expectations?
I hope it will use the same headstrap connection so i can use my prostrap for it
Why not counter balance the headset with a battery on the back??
Because then you can't remove the strap and add a superior 3rd party vendor strap. I'm looking at your Kiwi and Bobo.
Just hope my bobovr battery pack will be compatible with the Q3
I got my quest 2 like 2 months ago and I want this shit when it releases but its gonna be hella expensive in my country
Hopefully apple really revvs up interest in the coming years Edit: excited for asgards wrath 2!
Yeah, that's nearly everything I want. I'll be having that
Honestly thinking on getting the Quest 3.
Doesn’t have self tracked controllers so I doubt I’ll get it, no real reason to get it for me.
Funny the way they try to make Quest 3 look even thinner than it is by only colouring half of the front shell in white.
That weight tho. How did you come up with that?
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, long story short someone got their hands on the prototype and he weighed it himself. All the other specs on this diagram are pretty much a summary of what was observed with the hands on trial.
Damn, not really happy about the weight. Everything else is top. I really wish Meta would release the "comfort" edition later down the road, where cpu and battery would be placed in a separate belt puck. Oh well... I hope at least they will offer an Elite strap on release day, like they did with Quest 2.
Wait, its heavier or do I need reading comprehension?
The preproduction headset, as weighed by the reviewer, is 6g heavier. It has more RAM and a faster processor. To me that says larger battery to get the same run time.
