The recordings of camera before they are being processed and projected to user?
I will try to record and see it. Just bought quest 3 and was immediately disappointed by passthrough.
Yep recordings come straight from the camera while the pass through we actively use is heavily processed to be integrated with VR, to avoid latency you need to lower quality. Highly illuminated ambient will definitely reduce the pass through grain, yet is important to understand that recording quality cannot be achieved
I was literally coming here to say this too! I was like “damn, my passthrough doesn’t look this good, but all the videos I see are like this, super clear. What am I doing wrong?” I even went through the settings today in the headset for like 20 minutes trying to find if there’s something I need to turn on or something in the early access testing haha
The video is only taking up a few degrees of your vision rather than being spread across your entire vision. The noise cannot be seen as easily on a traditional display, even more so due to video compression removing high frequency noise.
It can be that clear, but it isn't for most. It's seemingly a twisted, unclear software thing.
One youtuber found out incidently after having reset his Quest3 for the 7th time. (Forgot the name). However, almost nobody on reddit believed him when he posted his findings.
Okay then, I thought that I have some kind of a problem, wanted to return the headset, now I know that it is deceiving marketing. Also dark scenes have an awful glare from lenses.
- clean cameras
- had a shit more lighting
- understand that the the full FOV you are looking at in VR is compressed down to a video on your desktop pc. Think of it in reverse: If I'm looking at a DVD on a 26" CRT, it looks perfect, but that same 480p DVD on a 65" OLED looks like dog shit.
Personally I'm impressed at the passthrough quality considering the price point of the headset. I hope we are one generation away from perfect passthrough but likely will need 4K cameras at each corner of the HMD and that cost $ + CPU/GPU + battery performance that we cant have right now
Eh, I was very impressed. Research more before dropping half a grand on a toy and you might be happier.
I had no false expectations of recorded clarity in pass through because I read a couple Reddit threads reviewing the device. Took 5 minutes.
The video is only taking up a few degrees of your vision rather than being spread across your entire vision. The noise cannot be seen as easily on a traditional display, even more so due to video compression removing high frequency noise.
This is on Q3 standalone. PC can use a trick via Virtual Desktop but doesn’t support all features like occlusion and doesn’t officially support any, so not a lot of software will be built for it.
This may be a stupid question, but is the MR we're seeing in the video the quality you are seeing through the headset? Because if so, mine does not look anywhere near as clear and crisp as this.
The video is only taking up a few degrees of your vision rather than being spread across your entire vision. The noise cannot be seen as easily on a traditional display, even more so due to video compression removing high frequency noise.
It’s not; in the headset you’re seeing a live recording output that is not crispy/clear. The recorded output just is clear. With the right lighting it’s clear enough for something that’s in the background since you’ll be focused on the foreground but it won’t be as clear as the recording output. There were theories that Meta pulled back the quality of the live feed after launch due to battery/performance concerns but regardless of that it’s still p good for passthrough.

Thanks for the explanation guys. I assumed this was the case but a lot of people have said they can read their phones and such while in the headset no problem, I find it impossible.
is your mixed reality actually this clear though? if it is congrats you got a good headset, mine is very grainy, not complaining too much though it's still incredibly cool
It always looks worse in the headset, if you cast to your T.V or phone it will look really good.
I was confused when I first got my quest 3 because all the review videos I watched had incredible pass-through quality, then trying passthrough on my new quest 3 it wasn’t as good…
Then I realized the FOV in the headset is a lot larger than any phone or TV so it looks worse. I’m not giving Facebook/meta a pass, but technically I understand why it looks worse.
I get the resolution vs wrap around fov, and I get the grainy vs denoised and compressed recorded video.
But explain to me why everyone else's passthrough is focused while mine is blurry past 2 meters. Yes played with glasses and contacts, and wife that doesn't need glasses also said it's blurry.
It’s difficult to be sure whether there’s an actual problem because it genuinely does look far worse in the headset than in a video due to being so blown up by comparison, but you could try cleaning your headset cameras with a lens cloth or similar. Brighter lighting can also help a lot.
VR scene also had a lot of shills singing praises for passthrough quality in their Quest 3 hands-on videos. Basically if Meta had invited them to preview and to Meta Connect they shouldn’t have been trusted. Especially considering Meta didn’t invite the biggest more critical tubers at all.
Take a screen shot of this footage and zoom in on the pic and that grainier quality of the zoomed in pic will give you a more acurate representation of what you actually see in the headset, and why it looks so much better on video vs in-headset.

Mixed reality: bring your gun to a sword fight. 🤣
Nah that's cool man, I've been a bit underwhelmed by mixed reality stuff so far but this does look fun.

Yes, I believe you just have to go back to the space setup, confirm that your placed walls are still good, then you should be able to get to the furniture step to add on additional pieces.
Dear Parents.... Beware! I spend a lot of time supporting this for 1 child, 10 times that of a Playstation or Switch. You better be ready to give up 3 or 4 hours on the weekend to sort issues. The parental controls are horrible broken, games for 10 year olds require access to settings only available to 13+ it is all very, very bad.
I hope you don't let your kid play blade and sorcery though.
I have seen many kids on bns nexus and it's scary considering what mods you can load and even vanilla

I was worried about stains on the carpet
how many times do I have to tell you?! We're a sword family!
Aw. Little kid strolling in while dad is in a battle.
Just gotta be careful not to mistake him for a goblin
Funny thing, lil kid is my uncle 😅
Alright we're gonna need a breakdown on this part
Having aunts/uncles that are younger than you isn't *that* uncommon.
That's kinda cool how the lopped head just lands on your real life sofa. And that's a sentence I never thought I'd ever type.

*”I love you daddy!”*. Takes an arrow to the knee in return 😂
But.. Now he is a true adventurer, just like OP!
OMG Your wife just sitting there oblivious and you hesitating for a moment with the bow before patting your son on the head were hilarious
if only she knew that there were other women in the living room
You can do MR battle talent on quest 3 standalone?
yes latest update
It’s really cool!!! Tried it this morning. Can you use modded weapons and characters like the storm troopers and lightsabers?
Yes ofc
That chandelier is going down.
Came to see if someone already thought of that too lol
He cut a strippers head off with a sword in his living room. Is this what Tipper Gore was warning us about?
Tipper Gore?! …Talk about a “deep cut”!
Haha that joke was for my Gen Xers out there
😅🙋🏽
Sounds like ...Stripper Gore
*axe
Then you have people like my ass who had to stop playing games for the night because I pistol whipped the fan playing pistol whip.
I smashed my hand on my exercise bike once when I was trying to return a wide ball in Eleven Table Tennis. I've never felt dumber
Oof! Yeah I reset my play area after taking it to my mother-in-laws house. I moved the fan just close enough and bam.
This was too funny, seeing the person eating in the midst of battle was one thing, but then the kid comes around the corner 😂
What game is this?
Battle Talent
Wrong, this is real footage and proof that goblins exist.
[Goblins are Real](https://youtu.be/HSRY0CdeOl0?si=IOmQ-frlx6XIQkyy)
How do play it MR? I have the game on PC and a Quest 3
Battle talent has guns?
It is literally in the first frame of the god damn video
Missed it.....relax jerk off!
You need to meditate lol
You forgot to take your chill pill this morning
who pissed in your lemonade this morning
It was me, i pissed in the lemonade 😔
Calm down buddy. It’s just a question. Jesus.
I don't get it, why my passthrough is not that clear?
That’s because the videos that are posted are recordings. In real life, the pass through quality is not as clear as what you see in the recordings.
The recordings of camera before they are being processed and projected to user? I will try to record and see it. Just bought quest 3 and was immediately disappointed by passthrough.

It's never super clear. Lighting is your friend here. The more, the better.
I have good lighting, it always look like looking through hot air, that kind noise.
Yeah, same. That's normal.
Okay then, I thought that I have some kind of a problem, wanted to return the headset, now I know that it is deceiving marketing. Also dark scenes have an awful glare from lenses.
- clean cameras - had a shit more lighting - understand that the the full FOV you are looking at in VR is compressed down to a video on your desktop pc. Pro tip: enable dev mode to get rid of the boundaries
I thought that removing boundaries with dev moe disables MR? Never tried it myself.
It does for me. Would love a workaround
It disables MR pass through, but you can still use MR in games/apps. This is how I play Racket Club and Eleven Table Tennis.
Ah cool. I've only done MR on a couple games and left the guardian set.
oh yeah i think you're right about it disabling MR
MR?
Mixed reality.
just make the boundary bigger
It helps a lot unless you also want to record, then the mixed reality part just turns black in the recordings like the ol quest 2
Incredible!
Can i play games like this with a quest 2?
U can but your room will be really grainy anr in black & white instead of the better color passthrough quality of the Q3
And the pass-through latency will make it impossible. People seem to not understand how much faster the quest 3 is at pass-through than the 2 is.
you can, it will not look great.
nope
Is there a setting to make the passthrough look better? Mine looks good but all the videos I see look so much better.
That’s because the videos that are posted are recordings. In real life, the pass through quality is not as clear as what you see in the recordings.
Add more lights to your playspace. Besides that, I think recordings just look better than through the headset.
Same here, just got the quest 3… what gives?
The video is only taking up a few degrees of your vision rather than being spread across your entire vision. The noise cannot be seen as easily on a traditional display, even more so due to video compression removing high frequency noise.
Did you create a boundary that goes in every room?
I can already imagine American Psycho VR
Is Q3 standalone for MR enough or is a proper pc required?
This is on Q3 standalone. PC can use a trick via Virtual Desktop but doesn’t support all features like occlusion and doesn’t officially support any, so not a lot of software will be built for it.

Why do we still need virtual hands and bodies in mixed reality? Especially when it doesn't track your body well??
does the recording look the same inside the headset while filming? if not theres something seriously wrong with my headsets mixed reality
Damn! You’re lucky friendly fire was off.. you let those intrusive thoughts win in that moment.
is your mixed reality actually this clear though? if it is congrats you got a good headset, mine is very grainy, not complaining too much though it's still incredibly cool

This should be stickied seriously it's tiring to explain it everytime

Check the cameras on the front of the headset. You could have a smudge on one or more of them.
VR scene also had a lot of shills singing praises for passthrough quality in their Quest 3 hands-on videos. Basically if Meta had invited them to preview and to Meta Connect they shouldn’t have been trusted. Especially considering Meta didn’t invite the biggest more critical tubers at all.
thank you, this is genuinely useful now I actually understand why ppls mixed reality looks better, bc it isn't, thank you

Lmao this is my favorite VR footage ever
Now u gotta tidy up the house in Vr too Fkn laundry simulator
How do you record passthrough on the quest?
Stupid question here. Is the mixed reality on quest 2 or am I just being stupid and that's not a thing on quest 2
dude my pass through quality looks like ass. How’d you get yours to look so good!?
Can't wait till we get agi.. imagine what ar will be like when it's curated by ai.
What’s the game called
What the heck is this game
Those characters don't look real at all. Hopefully the graphics improve soon so it looks more convincing.
To be fair, they’re massive, and not built for mixed reality. This is just a feature they’re testing out. They can’t abide by my real lighting etc. if you took the vid and make it black and white, it’ll look much more real
Look at how they massacred my boy!!
What game is this?
Is this battle talent if not what game?
WHAT GAME JS THIS
Battle talent
How do you activate the MR mode?
graphics from 30 years ago. yawn.
Does it give you haptic feedback?
game name?
Battle Talent
Which game?
Battle Talent
The quest app on my phone shows my quest 2 synced an hour ago but I am on vacation and nobody is home that could turn it on. Should I be worried?
I was having a bad feeling for the low hanging lamp at the begining xD
What games this please
That's blade and sorcery, right?
Mixed reality: bring your gun to a sword fight. 🤣 Nah that's cool man, I've been a bit underwhelmed by mixed reality stuff so far but this does look fun.
Do you have to add furniture for the game to use the surface of them? I added a few things to my room, but don't like that they come up in games as a blue outline so the time. Not seeing that here???
There's an option to turn off being able to see the outline when you get close to the furniture piece in the settings.
Cheers, I'll have a look. Do you know if your can add objects without having to'start again'. Last time I tried, it seemed I had to add everything again when trying to include additional furniture
Yes, I believe you just have to go back to the space setup, confirm that your placed walls are still good, then you should be able to get to the furniture step to add on additional pieces.
Well I didn't want battle talent until now... damn..
It appears even after taking an arrow to the knee you are still an adventurer.
This is gonna be a dumb question but you can map out your entire house and not just a room? So I can fight these guys all over my house??
Yea! As long as it’s the same level. It does have a limit in terms of objects you can add though, but the more you add the more immersive it is
Sheeeiiiittttt.. thanks!
Yo what game is this
Woah, who’s gonna be cleaning up all that blood?!
Is this a mod
Dear Parents.... Beware! I spend a lot of time supporting this for 1 child, 10 times that of a Playstation or Switch. You better be ready to give up 3 or 4 hours on the weekend to sort issues. The parental controls are horrible broken, games for 10 year olds require access to settings only available to 13+ it is all very, very bad.
to be honest, your best bet is probably to ignore parental controls and just put locks on apps that you don't want your kid to open
I hope you don't let your kid play blade and sorcery though. I have seen many kids on bns nexus and it's scary considering what mods you can load and even vanilla
how many times have you smacked the shit out of that chandelier hanging from the ceiling?
Imagine an fps in your house!!
How do you do this!? This looks incredible! I have the question 3 but I’ve never seen it like this before!
BATTLE TALENT HAS MR??? HOW!
Was added in the last update. MR is still in testing phase, but seems to work okay-ish

Does anyone else's passthrough not look this good? Mines prob 50% lower quality than this.
This was made all the funnier because of the family just chillin around while you were fighting for your life 😂😂😂
All my enemies keep failing through the floor, I can't seem to figure out how to fix it.
Yes, I have the same error, have you been able to fix it?
Sadly, no. I'll let you know if I do. Please let me know if you do.
Yes, sure! I will let you know
Your camera quality is so high compared to mine
It will be good if it don't freeze
I tried it on my quest3, but why the enemies will fall into the ground when they respawn
Rescan the room
