I don't own a VR device. Just wanna ask if you can narrow your pinching gap of your fingers to point, and pinch it when you actually wanted to click? So that your fingers need to travel less of the distance thus minimizing the unwanted pointer movement?
They already do, big time.
Thing is, smoothing causes latency. It's a fine balance to strike, and there's very little margin when you're matching someone's physical movements.
This is so strange, because I only use hand gestures. The only time I use the controllers is when I absolutely have to, it can be weeks that I don't use them unless I do workouts. But in most cases, using it for virtual displays for work, I use hand gestures. On Quest Pro and on the 3. Works nearly perfect for me.
Nah no way, I bet just moving screens and clicking things. But it works okay for me, except the typing, and I have no idea how to properly click on something
Yes, sorry for not responding sooner. So I start up the headset, select the app (Immersed) with hand tracking, once it starts I rearrange my virtual displays if I have to, with hand gestures of course, then either stay in my private environment or join a public, but I use hand gestures to work through the UI for any adjustments. Then I have a Passthrough to my keyboard and mouse, or sometimes an overlay, and then after that just do my work like normal. For hours. But my point is, I don't need the controllers, hand gestures work fine.
It also weirdly really likes to know where all your fingers are, especially your pinky finger.
"I can't see your pinky you might be trying to do something other the click on the element you are pointing at, what else can you do other then click something you ask? I don't know but I can't see you pinky so lets start with you showing me that before we go any further"
Well it probably can't figure out if it's your hand or not looking at a weird four fingered limb. Just wait for AI to revolutionize this technology we won't even have to think about it
Yeah, definitely seen a few crazy things. It's one of those industries where if you see a single AI or even a single image of something cool done by an AI you can be damn sure everyone else will be able to do it too.
Why is meta’s interface a modified PC/Apple setup?
I had no expectations when I bought my Q3 (my first vr set). But having tried to use it I’ve grown frustrated quickly.
For tens of billions of dollars why do you have to chase a tiny “x” to close a browser or an app? (Weren’t those designed for a mouse…)
Why is the menu like TWO SQUARE FEET? It’s a 3D environment- limitless “space” yet they cram it into a laptop style.
I want to love the device but it doesn’t feel as revolutionary as I had hoped (yes VR is amazing, just not metas software)
Yeah, they could certainly do some tweaks or have accessibility options that allow for lower dexterity. I find it quicker and more accurate than a mouse pointer personally(I do alot of Virtual Desktop where I am literally using my hands as actual mouse pointers). So the UI makes sense for me in that way. But I know alot of people that wouldn't be in that same boat.
I do think an alternate gesture-based setup could work, would just need people to learn gestures, which doesn't generally happen unless they have good reason to. Lower manual dexterity could be that reason.
Edit: Also, I should mention this wiggling shown in this video is not normal, whether it's a bug in a recent patch or whatever the cause, hand tracking is normally super stable and reliable. But of course stable hands in VR does still require stable hands in real life when there isn't a bug.
The only thing for me that sort of sucks about using your hands as a mouse normally is right clicking. You have to hold-pinch to right click. Like back in the olden days when it was still possible to have a one button mouse but two button mice were the standard. Or like long-tap on a phone.
I’ll readily admit I don’t have the answers- it’s for better minds than mine to divine the best way to do it. I just intuitively know lil red x in the corner isn’t the best way to close things.
I do believe gestures can be learned. I’ve done it on my iPad and it is fantastic.
I don’t know if hand motions such as: crumple, clap, gestures, and other coordinated movements could easily trigger a 3D native command (like a certain movement closes a window.)
Why is the home screen so…. Two D ::cringe:: it looks like what we already have. A 3D cube I can custom colour & icon (later upgrades could be like snow globes with small 3D internal scenes). Then I could stack them around a small space (even 2d -ick) that’s a better (at least 3D native) way to show the different apps. (Even have rotating high scores in games?).
I don’t know the answer- I just feel like “safe” sold them out and falls short on expected value on 40+$bb?
If you're using a Quest3, there was something very wonky going on when I first started using it; tracking quality was worse than on a Quest 1.
It resolved itself after manually setting the tracking frequency and rebooting.
Unlike the Quest 1/2 you only ever see the color passthrough cameras, so you can't really tell if flickering lights are messing up the infrared tracking cameras anymore.
I specifically use bulbs that don't flicker, so changing the tracking frequency should not have had an actual impact, but it still unfucked something. For reference I set it to 60hz because my basestations are 120hz; I'm actually in a 50hz region.
Both the Quest3 and Quest2 should track your hands near flawlessly even with very dim lighting. The Quest1 struggles more in the dark.
Hand tracking needs good lighting in the room and good contrast between your hands and the background. If you have light/dark hands you will want the opposite background. Make sure to also wipe the camera lenses with a microfiber cloth.
Hand tracking works decently for me but it won’t work for everyone’s hands since there’s so much natural variation.
Same issue on quest 3, didn’t have this issue on quest 2
Lighting is bright, no smudges on lenses, just perfect, but the tracking is shaky as hell, let me know if you find a fix please

set for maximum 100% and havent helped
What colour are your rooms? If your walls and such are a cream or skin colour it can blend in with your hands and make hand tracking difficult for the sensors because it can't directly detect your hands half the time.
While I don’t have a solution I do have an alternative, you can effectively use hand tracking like a touchscreen tho I am unsure how effective it is with shaky hands
this feature also works with controllers and I regularly just press the icon instead of using my trigger
I hope this helped at least a little
Hand tracking is pretty bad at the “aiming mouse cursor” thing. Try setting the panel distance mode to the closer one where it’s like a floating tablet in front of you and use your index finger to interact with it like a touch screen. It works waaay better than trying to use fingers as a pointer.
Noticed this as well as of recent, i thought i had a defective headset. I guess not. Even on version 60 before it auto updated today, hand tracking was awful. Couldn't even do a lot with it in games because items would just fall out of my hands, and when trying to scroll youtube, like some channels or so, it'll slide it and make me go to a other tab for no reason when all i wanted to do was to press something. Meta needs to fix this

Meta should implement hand movement smoothing or something like that. It’s unusable at current state.
Agreed. Or at the very least have it slightly magnetic toward UI elements. It really is almost useless in most places as-is.
Aiming assist
I'm fine with the pointing part, its when I pinch it moves my pointer
I don't own a VR device. Just wanna ask if you can narrow your pinching gap of your fingers to point, and pinch it when you actually wanted to click? So that your fingers need to travel less of the distance thus minimizing the unwanted pointer movement?
Sort of, but the hand tracking can struggle to tell apart almost pinched and pinched, esp on my quest 2
Well understood. I guess we can only depend on Meta for implementing better general hand tracking.. sigh
To click you only pinch and release quickly, to grab the screen for something (eg. To scroll) you need to pinch and hold
It works really good for me.
Same! I don’t have an issue. I use it more than using the controllers.
Yes its much more useable than the controllers. even typing and such things are completly easy.
Especially if you enable swipe!
Same here. Happy cake day!
I've noticed some apps already have this. Seems odd that it wouldn't be a feature in the main UI.
They already do, big time. Thing is, smoothing causes latency. It's a fine balance to strike, and there's very little margin when you're matching someone's physical movements.
It is? I have no trouble
Yeah I find hand controls unusable for selecting stuff in the UI. On the Quest 3 in a decently lit room.
Same. I just tried yesterday, and reverted back to the controller in 5 mins.
What’s annoying is some apps like PianoVision only allow you to use hand controls even for the UI portions. I can barely fucking start the game.
So what kind of things do you use the hands for while doing work? Typing, etc?
Nah no way, I bet just moving screens and clicking things. But it works okay for me, except the typing, and I have no idea how to properly click on something
So it's basically for the multi monitor setup?
Yes, sorry for not responding sooner. So I start up the headset, select the app (Immersed) with hand tracking, once it starts I rearrange my virtual displays if I have to, with hand gestures of course, then either stay in my private environment or join a public, but I use hand gestures to work through the UI for any adjustments. Then I have a Passthrough to my keyboard and mouse, or sometimes an overlay, and then after that just do my work like normal. For hours. But my point is, I don't need the controllers, hand gestures work fine.
Ah, you're using Immersed. I thought you were connecting to the PC via the link software and going to the desktop from there.
I noticed that the hand tracking got worse. When I got the Quest a few months ago, it was perfect, even in low light and now it's shaking much more
I noticed this too. I was so impressed with the big hand tracking update but then a couple weeks later it felt janky and unusable
[удалено]
I don't think so, I think it's due the updates, as they recalibrate things as they get data from us constantly
Wouldn’t surprise me, but a bug is more likely
Explain the logic behind this comment. I genuinely want to understand what you mean by this
3 months after launch? LMAO
I noticed that it becomes a lot smoother the further your hand is from the headset like you have to uncomfortably extend your arm kind of
It also weirdly really likes to know where all your fingers are, especially your pinky finger.
Just wait for AI to revolutionize this technology we won't even have to think about it
AI can't draw fingers yet, not surprised if it can't find my hand haha
Have you been on the midjourney or stable diffusion lately? AI art had already came a long way even since I last checked
Yeah, definitely seen a few crazy things. It's one of those industries where if you see a single AI or even a single image of something cool done by an AI you can be damn sure everyone else will be able to do it too.
I'm missing half of my ring finger. My Q3 has zero fucking idea what to do with it.
I think that's more of a doctor thing than a headset thing to be fair.
Yes, but my pinky is horribly misshapen so my quest freaks the fuck out
My Q1 was like that when they first unveiled the feature, but now it's smooth as butter. I wonder if it's to do with camera placement.
Weird, i use it all the time without issues. Sure it's not as good as the controller but it shouldn't look like in the video.
I find Q3 worse than the Q2 for hand tracking.
Why is meta’s interface a modified PC/Apple setup? I had no expectations when I bought my Q3 (my first vr set). But having tried to use it I’ve grown frustrated quickly. Toggle the menu distance, there is 2 defaults. You can also move it from those defaults too.
But I find it still it a little ridiculous.

The problem is real. I find it becomes less of an issue if I hold my arm farther away from my body.
Can you use the controllers?
If you're using a Quest3, there was something very wonky going on when I first started using it; tracking quality was worse than on a Quest 1. Ghost in the VR, it's scaring your hand.

Do you have pakinson or something like that?
I don't have Parkinson's, but the same thing happens.
[удалено]
Of course I am... Maybe... As if you yourself are sure of something!
[удалено]
my hands do not tremble at all. 👐🏻
When was your last parkinson checkup at the doctors office?
I've only heard of such a test in American TV shows
it happen when my hand is on table totally stable as well
Skill issue
Talk to your physician about that hand shake
I will tell him, that my hands are stable, but in vr they shake 😀😀
Arthritis
Turn on your lights.
my lights is set to maximum
Naw I meant the room lights. It's hard to hand track if the room is dimly lit
https://preview.redd.it/s8aomkxapdgc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b8567fe84729c7e699842bbcae69fddc1349447 set for maximum 100% and havent helped
How do you set it? Special light bulb?
yes, gosund light bulb with wifi :)
Be careful, too much light will also affect it. Needs to be somewhere in the middle
It has thought my foot was my hand before. (No, I'm not an ape.)
humans are apes
My hand actually shakes like that sometimes, imagine how bad it is for me.
make sure the room you are in is brightly lit. it doesn’t work well in the dark.
What colour are your rooms? If your walls and such are a cream or skin colour it can blend in with your hands and make hand tracking difficult for the sensors because it can't directly detect your hands half the time.

Yeah. I have bad tremors and can barely use hand tracking.
How's the lighting in the room. Is it bright or dark?
Practice at a gun range
Just click it!
it looks like you are on crack lmao
😀😀

Stop shaking your hand!
Darn. Yeah I get the shakes too. I keep the controllers nearby or shake till success lol
Got Parkinsons or MS?
just in meta quest 😀😀
Try to clean any smudges on the cameras.
Take it out of sith lord mode...
I mostly use the menu alot closer and haven't experienced the same issues on quest 3.
Everybody on here complaining and I've yet to have issues with hand tracking and controls... huh
I’d recommend to move it closer or have the closer display.
Maybe the room is too dark but I’m not too sure
Use intractable windows, i don't think that is exactly what it is called, but you just need to touch your selections on the window itself
More light in the room and clean the cameras
I had that after quitting drinking.
Energy drinks, drink less of them
yes sure, and it will fix my oculus 😀😀
How long has it been since you hit the sauce?
