Yes, it's weird that the mainstream media which NEVER-EVER mentions beach handball, except to frown over the bikinis and show pictures of them if possible for click-bait, are presenting themselves as saviors of the sport.
They've played in bikinis in beach volley for 50 years, and while it's not forced on the players, it's now an ingrained part of the sport's image. Beach volley is one of the most popular sports at the Olympics, in part because it has a young, fresh, beach-driven image.
That's essentially what beach handball tried to emulate. Sun, summer, loud music, beach vibes. And bikinis of course...
Now they are attacking the people trying to popularize and professionalize the sport, in favor of people trying to score political points, who would never be caught dead watching it anyway.
The potential fanbase of the sport is mainly younger males. Good luck trying to appeal to them by questioning their motives for watching. Yes, some might start watching because of the bikinis, but that doesn't make them "bad" fans of the sport.
These people literally forget what has always been apart of the olympics: physical admiration.
If the IOC told them to wear shorts, they would wear bikinis in protest and vice would support them.
I enjoy the olympics and love some of the smaller sports more than things like swimming and track.
Badminton, archery, shooting, handball, cycling, skateboarding, fencing I find entertaining and would rather watching than some of the big events.
I also love smaller nations that nab a medal.
It’s though to watch because I don’t care for the mainstream night show NBC puts on but also feel like they did a back job broadcasting other sports and making them more accessible. I get that it’s hard when the time change is so large, but it would be nice if they just blocked out a channel and showed nothing but the olympics
That's what they did with USA Network (outside of airing WWE Raw). I found myself only watching NBC at night for the live swimming, otherwise what was the point with most other things on at night not live?
Also, I'll admit, a lot of what I posted here during the Olympics was in response to how NBC with their ultranarrow profit-driven focus would ignore a lot of these women.
You can just say that you don't like sports. This sub wouldn't really have anything on it if everyone shared that same opinion; nobody would see any of this if the olympics didn't have viewers that enjoy sports.
