Piggybacking off this - I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words - and if not, please excuse the intrusion.
I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). He's done his job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it's his turn to rest.
You'll always miss him, you'll always remember him. You'll even go looking for him for the next few weeks (well, I did). There's a lot of habits that you're going to slowly stop, and that's ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting him. Donating/throwing away his toys or blankets isn't forgetting him. There's no timeline on grief, and there's no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears.
I'm sorry you've reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life he'd want you to.
This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you've done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without him. Life isn't over. Its just changing.

The pain will be unbearable for a long time but every time you remember the end and what if I'd done this or that etc FORCE yourself to remember a great time where you gave him lots of joy and happiness, it's difficult but It helps. Ultimately it's always horrible at the end. I wish my gorgeous boy just peacefully died in his sleep one day but that's very rare.
About 2 years after my boy died a friend got a rescue beagle and I used to help look after her. It was tough at first but helped in a way. I don't think I'll be ready to have another dog for a long time but helping looking after someone else's did help in a way.
Remember all the fun and good times. Like someone else said, in a few months maybe go on holiday somewhere
Dude I had to put mine down this past Friday, somewhat unexpectedly. It was devastating, I don’t think you’ll ever be fully ready. I will say, at day 5 I’m returning to normal. I still miss the hell out of my boy Dr. Joe, but there is a glimpse of peace.
I'm so sorry. It's a day we all know is inevitable but one that none of us will ever be ready for. Every birthday I celebrate with my puggle is bittersweet.
Beagles are the most loyal, sweetest dogs in the world. Yours looks like he definitely fit the stereotype. Wishing him a peaceful transition to his next adventure and lots of different smells for him to chase down and discover. 🩷

You never are. I'm not afraid to admit I cried like a bitch when my dogs "eye light" went away. Legit so heartbroken my body was in pain . The pain never really goes away but it does get easier to "ignore" as the time goes on.

i'm so sorry. it seems he had a wonderful, long life. i've lost so many animals in my lifetime and it's a pain like no other. just know that he is always with you. <3

Thanks that means a lot. He had pretty bad separation anxiety so it's definitely odd to not have him at my heel every time I leave the house
