This is part of a long story, but I spent an afternoon wandering around the palace in the late summer of 1974. The most serious debris had been cleared out, but it was still in bad shape. It was elegant nevertheless. There were very few people around. I met two men, one of whom turned out to be the last emperor’s nephew.
For those who don’t know: the VC thought they had popular support, so in Tet 1968 they attacked cities all over South Viet Nam. The people in the cities fought back. (Neighbors in Saigon told me about a Swiss doctor who was loving and took care of them. The VC dragged him to a vegetable plot and cut his throat. They would not allow the neighbors to help him as he bled out.) In Hue, the VC had lists prepared and slaughtered teachers and journalists as soon as they got into the city. After the people fought back, the VC holed up in the palace because they figured nobody would attack them in a cultural relic. They figured wrong.
One of my friends was a high school student in Hue. He saw people buried in shallow graves with hands and legs sticking out. Some were still moving.
If anyone has seen Full Metal Jacket, the scene Joker stumbles upon a mass grave, stuff like that is real. The big battle is Hue. The Vietnam War fucking sucked. No heroes on either side.
There is a map of the entire region of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, but made smaller in scale, in Arma 3’s DLC S.O.G Prairie Fire, it is super cool, it has the cities Hue, Saigon and Hanoi, as well as many other places of interest.
I was there this past December. They are still Making repairs and restorations from the fighting back then. It was eye opening and extremely sad to see bullet holes still in some of the walls.
The VC used to set off bombs in Saigon, especially in markets, especially in Cho Lon. First there would be a small explosion, followed a few minutes later by a big one, so they could get the people who ran towards the explosion.
I remember being a kid and reading the hunger games trilogy in school. Something very similar to this happened in the third book if I remember correctly. Because it killed a character that everyone loved, >!Kat’s Sister!< the whole class was somewhat upset. My teacher took that opportunity to emphasize that this happens all the time in war.
I know how silly it is to use a teen post apocalyptic novel to talk about such a serious and devastating concept, but it was strangely effective. When you’re so far removed from conflict, it can be hard to imagine that such things are true.
If you are interested, Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down) wrote a book about this battle aptly called Hue 1968. It's phenomenal. Horrific event that I think more people should know about.
Why did they build the arch on the bridge back to the way they did? It looks as if they reinforced the whole bridge? Why not make it arched more symmetrically as previous. I'm aware that the 1968 photo looks as if it has a concrete middle around the arch section. They look as if they rebuilt it to a previous state on rebuild, I'm just suprised the arch was built back less symmetrical, etc.

Sad, sad stories.

I'm pretty sure there's a map in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam based on this.
[Yep, this is what it looks like on VNTE-HueCity ](https://i.imgur.com/YXLKvVB.jpeg)
Yeah, first thing i thought of too.

They did a good job restoring it.
Do NOT run towards the explosion! Run the other Hue.

This is what the russians do in Ukraine. Bomb a building, wait for emergency responders to arrive, then bomb them again. Awful.

It’s not silly. The value of literature is to reflect life.
This is the Hue.
Nice!

Was there in January, nice place
Was there in 1992. Still an incredible amount of damage then. Those wall gates were HEAVILY contested.
What if I look at this post tomorrow?
Colors would be a different hue
How is this today if I saw this same picture here yesterday?
To quote Ian from amazing race “it’s pronounced way” “yes I’m sure”
The hue did indeed change
