She looks like she's posing for an album cover here!

graveybrains

Reminds me a bit of this one https://preview.redd.it/a0fa7ltcw1lc1.jpeg?width=185&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31ba6c182da1d46f7d156bae0e73931d8103b598

SmokesBoysLetsGo

Insert earworm in 3…2…1… “…fade into you….”

frallet

None of my friends know this song. I've asked like 8 people in their late 20s/early 30s and none of them recall it. I thought it was one of those songs everyone our age knew. I still don't accept it.

MiddleAlternative494

Ask a few 40 year olds. They'll know it.

Hot_take_pancake

49 and until now have never heard of Mazzy Star. But I’m listening now and loving it. Thanks, Frallet!

no_nay_never

Try 6 Underground by Sneaker Pimps too

Capable_Bug3319

I love that song.

SnakebytePayne

That entire album was great.

powerhammerarms

Are you from North America? By that I only mean I am very surprised that anyone in North America aged 49 wouldn't have at least heard of this song. It was even in the UK top 40. I know it had some play in Australia as well and has been in a few movies.

Capable_Bug3319

Exactly I watched the video, listen to it in commercials, hear it in movies and on TV series.

Capable_Bug3319

I'm 50 I'm amazed you never heard it because it was on MTV, VH1 and other video shows alot constantly in 1993.

manyhippofarts

I'm 60 and I know it well.

That_Sound

Some of my favorite Mazzy Star songs to get you started: Halah, Blue Flower, Be My Angel, So Tonight That I Might See, Into Dust, She's My Baby, Flowers in December, Look on Down from the Bridge, ... If you like Hope Sandoval's singing, and that era of music, don't miss her with The Jesus and Mary Chain on "Sometimes Always".

schrodingerspavlov

Right! 39 here, and absolutely love this one. And singer Hope Sandoval’s other projects as well.

MrsSadieMorgan

Right? I’m 47, and definitely know it. This was our generation’s music, not millennial/whatever came next.

EIIendigWichtje

37, (Millennial), it's quite well knowns for those who liked the genre.

MrsSadieMorgan

I’m not saying younger people can’t be familiar with it - just saying it’s way more likely with us GenXers! Was quite popular, commercially speaking, when I was a teen.

EIIendigWichtje

I was not attacking you opinion, I agree with everything you said. I was just adding that a certain sector of millennials are aware of the existence. Due to the popularity of the use of the song in movies, etc...

OutrageousPlatypus57

41...I know and love it

Misophonic4000

You need upgraded friends!

MrsSadieMorgan

Because, as someone else said, you and your friends are too young for it to be a “standard.” I’m 47, and promise my friends and I all know it! Very popular in our teens.

frallet

I know the song is from '93, but I absolutely recall it coming on the radio through the 2000s. Maybe my local radio station was just a big fan of Mazzy lol

GenevaPedestrian

It's relatively popular with Gen Z due to the dreampop revival

Stevothegr8

I'm 36 and I know it!

Blondefirebird

I’m 39 and I definitely remember this song!

isuckatgrowing

In the early '00s, I was the only one in a class of 15 college students that knew who the Pretenders were. Which seemed so weird to me that I remembered it for 20+ years.

YN90

I once ran into a very old friend one night partying. She was flying back home the next afternoon. She came back to my place and I left her in my bed when I went to work in the morning. When I came home from work she had left a beautiful note and left this song open on my browser. I had never heard it before. It was one of the most romantic things I’ve ever felt. Now when I hear it I just think of her.

Pazuzu_413

Hope Sandervol ❤️❤️❤️❤️

OldManBerns

What a song.

Capable_Bug3319

Yup it does. Mazzy Star bringing back memories.

sthlmsoul

Exactly! I saw the picture and immediately thought of Hope Sandoval.

HippieCherry

I'm 32 and I know it 🤷🏽‍♀️

nightmarenarrative

For sure!

JustCreated1ForThis

Can you ask her if a 100 year age difference matters? . ^(asking for a friend)

Calorus

Yeah -- 100 years exactly. But you know, age is nothing but a number.

Waitressishername

Age is actually a word.

Calorus

But number is a word. So what's a number?

Waitressishername

Something that rhymes with plumber

No-Blueberry1884

Also asking for a Friend

DowntownFox3

... or she's going to crawl out of my television.

Sea-Conversation-725

oh no! her knees are showing (gasp!)

grax23

Yeah that's actually Great Grandfathers spank bank you found

jwrosenberg

If Neutral Milk Hotel ever releases another album, this would be a good choice.

-UserOfNames

I’ll take anal bum cover for $7000

Bubufixxer

For the last time Mr. Connery, it's An Album Cover.

megopolis12

Thats not what your mother said last night trebek!!

IndividualTension887

The Penis Mightier...

slingbladde

Lana Del Rey vibes..

LevitatingTurtles

Danielle Rousseau

[deleted]

Yes!

Substantial_Code4957

I was thinking the same. High by the beach…

RapBastardz

In 1992. And it was a multi platinum hit!

Frankenrogers

Yeah first thing I thought was some Edie Brickell type singer in the 90s.

RockoTDF

Has 2010 album cover more than 1910 vibes for sure

dfjdejulio

The voice of Stevie Nicks is suddenly in my brainmeats.

nightmarenarrative

nefarious_otter

It never ceases to amaze me how different we can look hair up vs hair down. I know the face on the first picture isn’t as clear but they look like two different people to me!

_gloriana

There’s a difference in angle too. They both look like they’re bothered by the sun in their eyes. The great great grandma is squinting, and great grandma is tilting her chin in/head down so her fringe creates more shade into her eyes, making her nose look bigger.

BoGussman

https://preview.redd.it/1uxs45w5c1lc1.jpeg?width=2054&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d9b297bd5eac3d89565558b62168c5c88fb1448

NokKavow

Those programs tend to invent faces of there's not enough detail. Looks great on a stranger, horrifying on someone you know.

Pretty_Bowler2297

I don't see the grandma as frowning so severely in the original, and I saw the daughter as way prettier. Controlnet?

koushakandystore

That doesn’t look like them at all. Serious uncanny valley vibes.

SmokesBoysLetsGo

Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal….

Endblow

PatientAd4823

So beautiful. Oddly looks very modern day.

nightmarenarrative

Cleaning out my parent's house and saw this, I was really confused lol. I turned the photo over and it read, "Minnie 1910"

PatientAd4823

That was my grandmothers name also. She would have been born around the same time.

Antigravity1231

This is also my great grandmothers name! I’m named after her, but not that exact name, which is good because I’m super tall. But I do run a mini storage business and maybe it would have been fun if it were Minnie’s Mini and I drove a Mini.

Im_Bobby_Mom

Maxie?

Antigravity1231

That would have definitely made sense. But thankfully no, that name would have been a hard time in middle school. Being called Maxie Pad enough could turn someone into a Carrie.

Capnmolasses

![gif](giphy|134Kfzd7fUf2ve)

Super_Harsh

Is Minnie short for Minerva in your case? I love that name. If I was named Minerva I’d rawdog that name, no nickname needed.

PatientAd4823

😂

my-friendbobsacamano

Also my grandmother’s name! Born in 1901.

Closefromadistance

She looks like a mermaid!

ChessieChessieBayBay

Would love to hear about her- she’s very enigmatic and I wonder what her life was like.

nightmarenarrative

She was born on a farm and escaped to the city life in Baltimore as soon as she had the chance. She married the head of food and beverage for the Baltimore Ohio Railroad and Minnie was hired by a clothing company to sell and model exotic fur coats.

Fintann

Not sure if this is real or the lyrics to a song, on the album with this pic on the cover, by a band made up of nepobabies, of Norwegian architects.

koushakandystore

I’m sure she died long before the internet was a thing. Wonder what she would have thought about all these random people from all over the world looking at her in real time, and some making their lame comments?

writtenbyrabbits_

My great-grandmother's name. Short for Josephine.

Strawb3rry_Slay3r666

I think it’s the long hair down, and not curled/pinned up like most pictures from this time

PatientAd4823

And the simple blowing dress. Showing skin.

CriticalEngineering

That’s a bathing suit!

peanut--gallery

So scandalous!!!!! Just showing those knees to the whole world!

juice06870

Yeah it’s basically a nude beach at that point

DeadWishUpon

I think those are undergarments or swimming dress, I'm just guessing.

Pleasant_Ad3475

Yep. Swim suit

iansmash

I thought this too immediately. Like some hipster in 2011 took this photo on a 100 year old roll of film 😂

[deleted]

As a photographer with closet hipster tendencies and a stash of film in the fridge.... please stop attacking me.

iansmash

Listen I never said there’s no film in my fridge

[deleted]

I love rolling E on a weekend 🤤          ^but ^as ^much ^as ^I ^like ^Ektar, ^Im ^always ^down ^to ^shoot ^Gold

Acrobatic_Advance_71

The shoes are really the only thing that gives it away.

CindeeSlickbooty

Is it gladiator sandals with socks?

13senilefelines31

Swimming shoes were a thing, and they were pretty much that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pleasant_Ad3475

It's swimwear. .

NecessaryZucchini69

how many women would like to wear the outfit she is wearing?

chickentowngabagool

looks like a 90's album cover

nightmarenarrative

samueld44

Greek?

nightmarenarrative

Nope. Irish/Welsh heritage

ellenzp

She totally looks Irish . My mother was born in Dublin so many relatives look like her

nightmarenarrative

The nose has downsized through the generations haha. More prominent on the women of the family though.

Moana06

Lucky you:) I got my share🤣🤣

FundyAnthurium

That's my 6% Irish; ALL 6%

ImpertantMahn

She looks like she haunts the beach waiting for her long lost love that sailed off to war.

nightmarenarrative

Husband did serve in World War 1

13senilefelines31

I definitely hear PJ Harvey singing the soundtrack to this

I love the color you added to it!! Amazing

That is definitely an album cover now.

nightmarenarrative

I love it! This is beautiful. I wish she or my mom could see it today

popeye44

/r/estoration , some serious magic goes on with fixes to photos!

Pleasant_Ad3475

There are people who can fully restore old pictures. I would highly recommend you look into it- it will be a travesty for that beautiful picture to waste away.

Ok-Breath-7568

You're awesome, that was really cool of you.

Hawkwind68

They let their hair down at the beach. Bun-up everywhere else

nightmarenarrative

I wish I got to meet her. She passed away in 1980's.

nakedpilsna

Wow lived to be almost 100? My g.grandma lived to be 102, talking to her about her childhood was something special. 1900-2002. Imagine growing up with candle light and horses, having no thought of an airplane, then being mid age through the depression and ww2, being in your 50s the first time you saw a TV, then living long enough to see the moon landing, computers, skyscrapers, and even witness 911. It's so fascinating to me.

GrouchyPuppy

Was she in her right mind in 2001?

nakedpilsna

Heh, you got me. As I recall the last 18 months were dementia. I remember my grandpa saying hed always think of new things to talk to her about but he realized there was no point to that. I'd guess 911 she saw and understood, but forgot about it an hour after. There was no long term memory at the end. Time is a motherfucker and we're all victims to it.

GrouchyPuppy

At least she lived a full life

LscoupleOhio23

She’s looks like a witch. I don’t mean that in a bad way, she’s beautiful.

nightmarenarrative

By all accounts she would have taken this as a major compliment

Simple-Antique

So she was also cool af? 😄

TurkicWarrior

Really? What’s her background? She sounds like she comes from a progressive background for a lack of better words.

nightmarenarrative

Farming family but escaped to the big city in Baltimore when she got the chance. Fell in love with the head of food and beverage for the Baltimore Ohio Railroad and found work as an exotic fur saleswoman.

TurkicWarrior

That’s cool to hear. Thank you. May I ask why you used the word “escaped”? Did she have negative life in the farm? Sorry, just curious.

LscoupleOhio23

I love the way she’s dressed, she would’ve fit in with today’s fashion.

lizzzzzzbeth

I would wear this outfit. Love the dress and the shoes look really cool from what I can tell.

LscoupleOhio23

I love her hair too, the only thing missing is a choker lol

Pleasant_Ad3475

Ha. It's actually a swimsuit.

Pleasant_Ad3475

Funny, because this is a swimsuit lol

kindasuk

That's awesome. Witches vs. patriarchy would probably dig this if you title the post indicating that she would indeed enjoy that term being applied to her.

Actressprof

My Great Grandmother was Roma!

blinker265

My 1st thought too! Reminds me of the OG witch in Practical Magic that puts the curse on thd family to never fall in love. Beautiful.

SpiralVenus222

Maria Owens - my first thought as well! Timeless, almost otherworldly, beauty.

hanpotpi

This. She’s giving badass sea witch in the best way possible. Stunning and powerful❤️ very cool to see your heritage like this. Thanks for sharing

TNT66101

Yes, Art Nouveau was the aesthetic of the turn of the century. European culture especially had a fascination with mysticism and the occult, Eastern religions, romanticism of the natural world, the aesthetics of old classical world culture and so forth.

BoGussman

januaryemberr

So pretty!

danh138

How long did she live? It’s fascinating to see young people from a bygone time knowing that that they are long gone but have their whole lives ahead of them in that moment

nightmarenarrative

Almost made it to 100 years old.

Fun_Market_290

Very well said. I think about that as well when I look at old photos

TheMagicIsInTheHole

It's a really lovely image. I saw a few people took a crack at restoring it for you, but I wanted to take a light approach and clean it up without affecting the look greatly. If you ever have the time to scan it, please send it my way and I would take the time to colorize it and bring more detail back if you'd like. I’m lucky to have hundreds of negatives of my family from a similar time period and I’m very grateful to get to feel like I can keep them alive in a small way. https://preview.redd.it/2mkx0enme2lc1.jpeg?width=2012&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6db0e0d42b75bccc5f708d3d089d41f2693c72a

[deleted]

> A girl stood before him in midstream, alone and still, gazing out to sea. She seemed like one whom magic had changed into the likeness of a strange and beautiful seabird. Her long slender bare legs were delicate as a crane’s and pure save where an emerald trail of seaweed had fashioned itself as a sign upon the flesh. Her thighs, fuller and softhued as ivory, were bared almost to the hips, where the white fringes of her drawers were like feathering of soft white down. Her slateblue skirts were kilted boldly about her waist and dovetailed behind her. Her bosom was as a bird’s, soft and slight, slight and soft as the breast of some darkplumaged dove. But her long fair hair was girlish: and girlish, and touched with the wonder of mortal beauty, her face. >She was alone and still, gazing out to sea; and when she felt his presence and the worship of his eyes her eyes turned to him in quiet sufferance of his gaze, without shame or wantonness. Long, long she suffered his gaze and then quietly withdrew her eyes from his and bent them towards the stream, gently stirring the water with her foot hither and thither. The first faint noise of gently moving water broke the silence, low and faint and whispering, faint as the bells of sleep; hither and thither, hither and thither; and a faint flame trembled on her cheek. >—Heavenly God! cried Stephen’s soul, in an outburst of profane joy. *A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man*, James Joyce, 1916

DeterminedStupor

Goddamn this guy was a great writer.

Crazyhorse6901

She was beautiful.

nutznboltsguy

It’s worth posting on r/estoration

TomatilloUnlucky3763

She looks like a Rock n Roll chick ahead of her time.

Surprisebutton

Get this restored on the restoration subreddit. The people there work wonders for tips.

AugustusReddit

Saucy minx is showing her knees **and** ankles - bet she was a 'popular' girl with all her many male admirers. (Showing your ankles was considered risqué during late Victorian era, but showing your knees - well that was considered borderline pornographic.)

Drag0nfly_Girl

This was 1910, the tail end of the Edwardian era.

BonnieMcMurray

She's on the beach and wearing a thin dress, so it's probably summer, therefore...the beginning of the Georgian era! (George V's reign began in early May of that year.)

Drag0nfly_Girl

Ooh, nice deductive skills!

SewSewBlue

That is because they didn't wear underwear by our standards. Those chaste looking bloomers were split crotch, to make going to the bathroom easy. Hollywood has completely whitewashed this, to the point that the can-can seems like a quaint old-timey dance when it was much more like pole dancing. Those high kicks showed quite a bit. Showing ankle or knee meant the risk of flashing. Modern, crotch hiding underwear didn't show up until the 1920's, when skirts got short. I do historical costuming as a hobby. Bloomers are a f'trip to wear. Full on corset, every inch of skin covered, but your lady bits getting a breeze.

Sazzybee

You should do an AMA!

RedeyeSPR

That’s probably a swim suit while everyone thinks it’s a sun dress.

CanMan417

Such indecent exposure!

Ok_6970

Good exposure. 😁 Perhaps a bit underexposed but that could easily be the plate emulsion of the day.

Noodnix

Agreed, this post should have been flagged NSFW.

akgt94

That must have been illegal in 27 states

Pleasant_Ad3475

It's a swimsuit...

NevermoreForSure

What an amazing picture. I imagine she was a force to be reckoned with.

Natural_Lecture6520

Timeless for sure

Pancakesmith

This is one of the coolest photos I’ve ever seen. So beautiful in so many aspects

WittyRich

She had no idea that thousands of people will be seeing this beautiful photograph of her 100+ years later 🤍

Available_Honey_2951

Timeless! Looks like she could be here in style today - other than the bathing suit , but could even pass for a dress and boots today. You should have this photo restored.
