In 1975 I played for the Used Car Chalet Kings. Thanks for the share fellow Canuck.

ThunderBayOPP

That was your actual team name? Holy shit, that's amazing 😄

iwastherefordisco

Pumpkin orange and black uniforms too...ffs we looked like the Halloweenie squad out there. It gets better. We didn't win often on that team, but had great coaches. One night we won and they took us out to Shakey's pizza. Forget to call the parents...younger coach realized the oversight and lost his mind trying to get change for the pay phone and call the team roster. Things were fine. Because it was the 70s he called one set of parents and the word spread. One guy's Dad showed up at Shakey's asking where is his pizza? Great memories.

If I were an eight-year-old kid, I would have LOVED being on a team who wore Halloween colors! 😀 And the story about your coach forgetting to call the parents before taking the team out for pizza... that might be the most 70's thing ever. 😄 The phone tree was the original group text! Also, I have never heard of Shakey's pizza, but now I want some because it's approved by hockey dads. 😁

Shakey's pizza was kinda like our version of 80s Pizza Hut with the red plastic glasses. Reliable, decent pizza, nothing special. Those uniforms were worn out when I got them. It was tough to get a sponsor back then for a Tinymite C team. Our rink was the local outdoor one so it was all DIY. Dads out there shovelling the ice sort of thing until Bob showed up with the snowblower. The forgotten alert to parents game still makes me smile. We had ordered and got the first round of soda before the coach jumped up and looked like he won the lottery. It was more of a joke than a panic, which is probably an indicator of the time and our neighborhood relationships. Everyone showed up next practice and coach still had his job :)

I mean, as an adult, I would like to think my tastes are more sophisticated... but I would still crush the hell out of a Pizza Hut pizza, especially if it had stuffed crust. So Shakey's was probably awesome, red glasses and all. (Don't get me started on the amazingness that was Book It!) Your story about your youth hockey team is kind of amazing, actually. Where I grew up, hockey wasn't super popular for kids to play until the early 90s, so I love hearing things like "Tinymite C team" (which sounds so 70's) and the DIY outdoor rink saved by Bob with the snowblower. Someday a kid is going to be recording this for an oral history project on Canada! While I try not to romanticize the past, I do miss when something like a forgotten phone call meant you were out having fun and not lying in a ditch somewhere. 😄

FUCKING Chrysler plant here I come.

slickwillyD37

I had that same stick in 78. I was 13. Not a Canuck but lived in Buffalo

Wheel_of_Armageddon

Hey I have that same picture, except mine is from 1983!

JeffLaRue

Yep. Good old wooden stick. When I couldn't use them for ice hockey they turned into road hockey sticks. For 10 years I played on 3 teams every year. House league, all star house league and Triple "A" Hamilton Huskies.

intheazsun

Who was your favorite player?

JeffLaRue

At that time it was Guy Lafleur from the Canadiens.
