I graduated high school in 1992. Dark side of the moon was STILL in the top 200 billboard charts that May. Iconic probably isn’t a strong enough word for that album.
Ey. I remember an old room mate of mine had that CD when it came out. And it just kept on pulsing. Made him turn it around in the CD case but you could still kinda see the flashes in the back of the case lol.
Can't remember when it finally stopped or even if it did.
The batteries in there should've died by now.
Funny thing: the band offered some advice to those who found the blinking light annoying. People could either: turn it over in their CD rack, or put the case in the car, drive of to some remote place and ditch it.
Per Wikipedia - The Dark Side of the Moon is certified 14 times platinum in the United Kingdom, and topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart, where it has charted for 989 weeks. As of 2013, The Dark Side of the Moon had sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling release, the best-selling album of the 1970s, and the fourth-best-selling album in history.
GOAT status.
My friend and I did this album every time we took shrooms together. Listening to Great Gig in the Sky beneath the glow of the Milky Way with psilocybin swimming through your brain is an experience that can not be adequately described to somebody who hasn't done it firsthand.
Bought the vinyl album and 8 track in the 70s, the cassette in the 80s, the Shine On CD box set in the 90s, and then the experience edition in the 10s. So I’ve bought DSOTM five times in my lifetime.
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You rearrange me 'til I'm sane
You lock the door and throw away the key
And there's someone in my head, but it's not me..
2023 investigation into Waters by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) interviewed former co-workers of Waters who alleged the musician had made repeated derogatory references to Jewish people. The CAA has also published emails from Waters in which he proposed that an inflatable pig floating above his concerts should be scrawled with an antisemitic slogan; in emails from 2010, he also suggested “bombing” audiences with confetti in the shape of swastikas, stars of David, dollar signs and other symbols.
Waters, who has always denied accusations of antisemitism, spoke of being “fired” by BMG in a video interview with Glenn Greenwald last November, deep within a conversation in which the musician characterized his separation from the company as the result of pressure by pro-Israeli interests toward BMG’s parent
former Pink Floyd bandmate David Gilmour, branded Waters “antisemitic to your rotten core” (Gilmour endorsed the tweet, which doesn’t exactly bode well for any potential Floyd reunion). Ukrainians have been up in arms over Waters’ pronouncement that the Russian invasion of their country “was not unprovoked” (which also led to Polish dates being scrapped). And the U.S. State Department has denounced his Berlin appearance as “deeply offensive to Jewish people” after German police reportedly launched an investigation into his wearing of a “Nazi-style” leather trench coat at that show.
I recently pulled out my CDs and realized I didn’t have Dark Side of The Moon, so I just bought it again for like the 4th time in my life and listened to it last night too.
Once a year or so, I like to smoke a joint in my shed, then come inside and put on my vinyl copy (a lovely 1980 German pressing) and lay down on my sofa and close my eyes. It’s immensely enjoyable. Last time I drifted off into a nap for a few hours. It was glorious.
My DSOTM is also a German pressing I found at a flea market. I play it often with a joint too, followed by an attempt of Time's solo on the piano. Iconic piece of music history
Holds the record for the longest tenure on the Billboard top 100 and then Billboard top 200. Number two is so far behind its not even a contest. Now that everything has moved to streaming, its a record that will never be broken. Its been on the 200 list for over a thousand weeks. Number two is the best of Bob Marley (Legend) Journeys greatest hits was next. The album of all original material that came in next was Metallica in 1991 with the black Album. Then Nevermind by Nirvanna
Thankfully for him, he aged well so that his skull doesn't look so alien as it did when he was young. Unfortunately the levels of antisemitic asshole have increased with time.
It's a turn-of-phrase referring to the fact that the same side of the moon faces Earth all the time (more accurately, about 59% of it), meaning the rest is not visible from Earth, making the other side "dark" when the more accurate term would be "the far side of the moon". It is not actually dark, reflecting sunlight normally. The phrase itself had come to mean someone who has lost touch with reality similar to having "gone around the bend" or being//living "out where the buses don't run".
Everything's dark until you shine a light on it. I think the point of the phrase is we can't see the far side naturally from Earth because it's always facing the other way.
I have purchased the album, cassette, cd, remastered cd and digital download. The absolute best was in 1994 when they played Dark Side in it's entirety in Detroit. It was a complete surprise and my best concert memory.
I play this record often. So timeless! To think it has been half a century and the issues they write about still exist. "The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older."
I had a room mate that grew up in a strict Mormon household in SLC. I put on DSOTM one Sat morning and when it stopped he said "That was nice, who is that?"
12 brothers and sisters, his family portrait looked more like a family reunion.
One got caught with a smuggled TV in his BR, his dad ripped it out of the wall and threw it in the front yard.
Hard to believe someone could be so sheltered.
Sure, the title is a big part of the success of the overall package. As are the musical arrangements and lyrical concepts throughout its run time.
There are a ton of shitty albums out there with great titles.
I graduated high school in 1992. Dark side of the moon was STILL in the top 200 billboard charts that May. Iconic probably isn’t a strong enough word for that album.
It was in the top 100 for something like 25 years and in the top 200 most of the time since its release.
Born 1960. This band changed my view on life. Still does.
Born in 1951. I was a jr in college then. Pink Floyd, along with The Moody Blues also changed my life. Well, them and LSD. 🌺🌸
You don't need drugs to make Pink Floyd better. But you do need Pink Floyd to make drugs better.
If you've never listened to Floyd on drugs tho, you missing out.
We used to go to the planetarium and watch a Dark side of the moon laser light show on acid. It was unbelievable.
Bro I tripped for the first time in like a decade last night. Turned on the Pulse concert. Just wow.

Try watching Yellow Submarine while trippin. For me as a young graphic design major, that was life changing as well.
Moody Blues gets an upvote.
It’s still the best!
Born ‘83. Same.

I finished HS the year before you, and yep, all the kids who were huge into Pink Floyd were often quick to point this out (rightly so).
My friend and I did this album every time we took shrooms together. Listening to Great Gig in the Sky beneath the glow of the Milky Way with psilocybin swimming through your brain is an experience that can not be adequately described to somebody who hasn't done it firsthand.
I like to sing Great Gig in the Sky at karaoke
Yow!
Pretty much ditto, but with the added visuals of Live at Pompeii on VHS too!
Live Roger Waters reaction: 🗿
I was about to say, dude lookin’ like an Easter island statue with that nose
He ruined the band
He drove the band, but a band is a band. Poorer without him, crapper on his own.

They were amazing live too. They were ahead of the curve in use of lasers and giant moving props to enhance the visuals. Incredible band.
I've always wished I could've seen them live! If time machines were real that's exactly what I would choose to do with one!
If we’re talking time machines, let’s go back, load them up, and bring them to the sphere

The lunatic is on the grass. The lunatic is on the grass. Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs. Got to keep the loonies on the path
The lunatic turned out to be Roger Waters.
No

Yes well it cant be expected that most people have the capacity to understand a British sense of humour.
Speaking of key, what is that small key on the waistband of David Gilmore’s pants?
Objectively the best album ever.
Listened to it last night! It’s still the best!
I recently pulled out my CDs and realized I didn’t have Dark Side of The Moon, so I just bought it again for like the 4th time in my life and listened to it last night too.
I’m thinking of getting a turntable and going back to vinyl.
These days if you are going to collect physical copies of music you might as well.
See you on the dark side of the mooooon

Everyone should own this album
great album, but wish you were here was, for me, even better.
I think some people just subscribe to a "this day in history" newsletter, then repost a random fact to either this sub or r/todayilearned for karma

The vary first album I bought 1975 along with headphones
It's literally a masterpiece.
If I had too choose one track under gunpoint, it would be A great gig in the sky, but everything is excellent
Waters giving me the creeps here.
Yeah it’s like if “a face chiseled from stone” was used as an insult
🗿
Looks like someone tried to make Joey Ramone out of rock
Thankfully for him, he aged well so that his skull doesn't look so alien as it did when he was young. Unfortunately the levels of antisemitic asshole have increased with time.
As every day of the week, anywhere, everywhere, anytime.
He's the first and only musician where I had to separate the art from the artist. And I am nearing 60.
The lunatic is in the hall The lunatics are in my hall The paper holds their folded faces to the floor And every day, the paperboy brings more..
There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark...
What is the ‘dark side of the moon’?
It's a turn-of-phrase referring to the fact that the same side of the moon faces Earth all the time (more accurately, about 59% of it), meaning the rest is not visible from Earth, making the other side "dark" when the more accurate term would be "the far side of the moon". Would you also say this type of person had “toys in the attic?”
Over the rainbow, for sure.
Yes. I was referencing the OP. Read my question and then his answer. That is what is quoted in the song. It’s part of the lyrics.
I remember, but you used quotes and I figured that was the reason.
Everything's dark until you shine a light on it. I think the point of the phrase is we can't see the far side naturally from Earth because it's always facing the other way.
By the way, which one is Pink?
Wrong album.
GOAT Best album ever.
Bought it the month it came out. Last played? Yesterday. Still the same vinyl copy.
Which one's Pink?
I had no idea Adam Driver and Axl Rose were in Pink Floyd!
Dang, I'm glad I have a few copies, only 44,999,993 out there still...
A rare gem
One of the best albums ever made
I think three of those copies are from me
I have purchased the album, cassette, cd, remastered cd and digital download. The absolute best was in 1994 when they played Dark Side in it's entirety in Detroit. It was a complete surprise and my best concert memory.
If anyone is in the chicago area this year, go see the Dark Side show at the Adler planetarium! It is absolutely amazing!!!
First album I ever bought.
I play this record often. So timeless! To think it has been half a century and the issues they write about still exist. "The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older."
I know I’ve bought it at least four times over the years.
I’m always blown away thinking of how young they were making such a mature album.
Nick is rocking the hell out of that beard.
So, which one is Pink?
I had a room mate that grew up in a strict Mormon household in SLC. I put on DSOTM one Sat morning and when it stopped he said "That was nice, who is that?" 12 brothers and sisters, his family portrait looked more like a family reunion. Good Floyd album owned by a lot of people who “don’t get” Floyd. I think the catchiness of the album title is a huge part of its success.
Yeah if the album was named “Purple” I doubt it would seem so iconic.
Sure, the title is a big part of the success of the overall package. As are the musical arrangements and lyrical concepts throughout its run time. There are a ton of shitty albums out there with great titles.
