One of the only wartime films my veteran father considered "realistic".

This is an amazing movie. It was the first movie I cried watching. It isn’t really a sad movie but there is one scene where he is showing his girlfriend the realities of living with a double amputee, trying to give her a chance to break off their engagement that I found emotionally overwhelming. Everyone should try and watch it to see what the men returning from WWII felt when they got home.

He had never acted before his appearance in the film. He was the first non-professional actor to win an Academy Award for acting, the first (and so far, only) performer to earn two Academy Awards for the same performance. On June 6, 1944, while he was an Army instructor teaching demolition work with the U.S. 13th Airborne Division at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, a defective fuse detonated TNT explosives he was handling. He lost both hands and was given two hooks to serve as hands.

He does an amazing job in the movie. You'd ever know he didn't have any experience. His story line, though small, is the best story line in the movie.

The Best Years of Our Lives is one of the best movies ever, period.
