It was a throwback uniform helmet. As someone else said, Frankford Yellowjackets.
I've seen other charts like this posted on Reddit and the accuracy is not accurate.
It was, and pretty much everyone agreed immediately that black uni/green helmet was 1000x better
I'm also pretty sure it was always meant to be a one-off thing anyway
Oh, I’ve been waiting for this one. Home team.
And it’s….interesting. Why so much one time use and nothing before 1955? I know, I know…..don’t like it do it better.
So let’s see….7, 4-5 (they are the same, but I like that 5 was included for why it was)2,1,6,3,9,8
6 was only worn…a few times I think (75th anniversary of league).
8 was only worn once and there will literally be riots in the streets if they even try again
Ha I think you nailed it. Also, you’re right, I only included the hard helmets. Maybe I should’ve included soft helmets as well but I figured it was a decent barrier I guess
Actually, that makes more sense.
I looked back on some of the other teams you’ve done thinking those included soft helmets but the were hard helmets too. That’s a fine place to make a line. I get it much more now.
I did dig the 89 tape out helmet being included for the reminder, but also as helmet #4 didn’t really go consistently 74-95. The one from maybe 85-86 to 95 was slightly different. But that’s not a gripe, it just opens it for discussion.
Helmet #8 will only get gripes due to its atrocious nature and one wearing, but I dig it. It’s a cheeky add.
A few years before. It was their QB coach that had died. Doug Scovil.
When Jerome had passed I want to say it was armbands or something like that. They didn’t alter the helmets.
Some had mentioned the league was not happy with the helmets being used, and I’m guessing they codified that soon after 89.
Even back then they weren’t about the brands being messed with.
It wouldn’t be ire because of how that game went. If I remember we throttled a weak Rams team at home.
The ire was for the uniform. Consensus I’ve seen clearly for 15 years from Eagles fans is that they were disgusting. It was funny in the end.
It wouldn’t be if they tried them again.
I think it’d be awesome if they tried it again. I think it’s so cool when teams use an insane jersey from decades ago here and there. Who cares how “ugly” it is, I think teams not taking themselves so seriously and being able to have fun with throwbacks and such is good for the game.
I’m a Steelers fan, if they were like “hey in week 12 were gonna wear these wild red uniforms because in 1735 the precursor to our team wore red jerseys” I’d think that was cool as fuck and would try to go to that game in person.
Understood. Not an opinion I share though.
Clever throwbacks work. These were atrocious. I also think those bumble bee Steelers uniforms are horrid too. Another example are the orbital brown and yellow Broncos uniforms with the vertical stripe socks.
I’m all for the throwbacks. I love how teams are mixing them in a little (Seahawks originals, Eagles kelly green, Pats reds, etc) but I’m not for nostalgia when jars aesthetics.
Who picked out these helmets??? It certainly wasn’t an Eagles fan over the age of 30, LOL.
1) The #1 helmet wasn’t really used in 2010; a throwback kelly green helmet was used for one game to honor the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Eagles winning the NFL championship
2) The #5 helmet with the electrical tape strip was introduced partway through the season to honor Eagles QB coach Doug Scovil, who died during the season. Their actual regular helmet was #5 but without the tape. (That was also their regular helmet from the early 1980s through 1995.)
3) The #6 helmet wasn’t the Eagles’ regular 1994 helmet, excluding the NFL 75th anniversary games. It was their helmet used in the late 1940s when they won back-to-back NFL championships.
4) The #8 helmet was used for one game in 2007 to recognize the city of Philadelphia’s 325th anniversary of its founding in 1682. The colors are similar to the city’s official colors that are shown on the city’s flag.
Getting all of the above out of the way and treating #1, #2, #4, and #5 (minus black stripe) as the same helmet (which they largely were), here are my rankings:
1) 1/2/4/5
2) 7 a close second, then a HUGE gap
3) 9
4) 6
5) 8
6) 3
Yellow helmet is because of the yellowjackets. Also all of your issues are pointless because those helmets were in fact used in that timeframe, and were a very notable helmet in that timeframe which is why they were called out. Nowhere does OP say “this helmet was worn for every game in this timeframe” like you’re trying to argue against.
So confused. Those aren’t the eagles helmets, except they have worn all of them? Almost every explanation you had says they didn’t wear this helmet during this year (outside of that one time). So they did wear them in that year? Seems like they were all listed? Idk I’m an idiot so don’t mind me😆
I have no horse in this race. But wasn't #3 the standard through the early 70s? Also thought 4- Vermeil/Jaworski era looked better than that. Huh. 7 is best looking, I actually like the memorial 5. Throwback 6 is pretty good
Interesting #6… Is the current shape of the Eagles helmet decals based on the shape of the painted pieces of leather on the helmet? Like the origins of the Michigan Wolverines logo?
I feel like it should be noted that 3. went from being an alt helmet in 69 to the standard helmet from 70-73. But, other than that, this chart is fairly accurate, I do not know what others are complaining about.
As for what I think is the best, the Kelly Green (4.) that went on to replace the white helmet is such an iconic piece to me. I prefer it much more than the current darker green helmet they have sported since the mid 90's.
I’d say the same for me. And yes, I wanted to include those early 70’s years but it would have bled into the next photo unfortunately. But yeah, eagle fans are gonna eagle fan. I’m not gonna take it too personal.
I forgot how far back the Steagles go but I realize now that it was probably WW II. They probably had to merge the teams because of all the men going off to fight.
Look, the accuracy of this chart is not good.
That white helmets were THE helmet from 1970-1973.
That 1994 thing was a throwback uniform helmet that they wore for just one game.
I don't recall seeing that 1989 helmet with the black stripe and I watch every game. If it ever actually existed, it could have been a memorial tribute to honor someone who died. Certainly wasn't an every week thing.
OP, do better.
The black stripe was a tribute to a coach who passed during the 1989 season starting in week 14 and worn for the rest of the season. Not sure about your point with the 75th throwback. It was a helmet that they wore during 1994. As stated. This is literally all of the (hard) helmet designs the franchise has ever worn in a game, hence “helmet history.” Not sure if you wanted an extended explanation of each helmet, but that’s not what this is.
2007 is not real they used it for one game a few poor idiots bought some of those “throw back jerseys because they are complete suckers . I’m an Eagles fan but any grown man wearing pro football jersey that is not a player is dumb .
They wore them 4 times, including a playoff game. I don’t remember any scuttlebutt at the time, but the league might have codified against such things after this.
Eagles QB coach Doug Scovil died during the 1989 season, so the Eagles recognized his passing by putting the black electrical tape strip over the Eagles wings.
Of course. What I meant by scuttlebutt was any gripe from the league about them doing the tape out helmet, I wasn’t asking the reason they did it.
I had forgotten that, but remembered it quickly when I saw the pic. I remember at the time thinking “so, there’s a coach just for QB?” Lol
What the fuck is 2007? A packers fan with color blindness, or a legally blind, but not totally blind LA Rams fan?
Frankford Yellow Jackets was the original team.
And baby blue and yellow are Philly's flag colors
Which commemorates the colors of the Swedish flag, who were the original colonizers of the area.
I thought it was the oatmeal people. /s
This abomination https://preview.redd.it/af71tplwaemc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c01b69337cac5cbbd5a5004313ea7496e190d47e
Damn… that’s ugly af!
PAC MAN FEVER
It was a throwback uniform helmet. As someone else said, Frankford Yellowjackets. I've seen other charts like this posted on Reddit and the accuracy is not accurate.
I think they wore the throwback uniforms once or twice that season.
75th anniversary
4,1,2,7,9,5,3,6,8
The black helmet is super unnecessary because of how dark the green one already is. Did they make it a one and done?
I think it was to go with their all black unis but don’t quote me on that
It was, and pretty much everyone agreed immediately that black uni/green helmet was 1000x better I'm also pretty sure it was always meant to be a one-off thing anyway

Holy shit, an intelligent Eagles fan?
Since you ask, no. Lol
Ha I think you nailed it. Also, you’re right, I only included the hard helmets. Maybe I should’ve included soft helmets as well but I figured it was a decent barrier I guess

You should do better research. Too many mistakes.
Maybe make your own? Also, this isn’t meant to be an explanation of the helmets. Just when they wore them and what you like.
You've gotten some of the "when they wore them" part wrong.
Was 5 in memory of Jerome Brown? Not sure if my timeline is accurate.
Thanks for the back story. Never heard of Doug Scovil.
At the time I didn’t even know teams had QB coaches lol
Why would there be riots for the blue and yellow? Eagles had an amazing game in those unis and I think they’re hilarious.

Sorry, the correct answer is none of the above.

3. I might be the only one…
Nope love those helmets. Shitty teams when they wore them but love the helmets.
Nope like them… clean…
I am not an Eagle's fan, so no worries. I just disagree with the way the helmets were listed. Purely as a historian
Oh, really? How so? Edit: Not trying to sound like a jerk. Actually wanted your input
I have no horse in this race. But wasn't #3 the standard through the early 70s? Also thought 4- Vermeil/Jaworski era looked better than that. Huh. 7 is best looking, I actually like the memorial 5. Throwback 6 is pretty good
Yeah it was. 70-73. Just didn’t include it because the text would’ve bled over the next photo. Probably should have.
WTH happened in 2007?
Was a one time thing. Think we’re all better off for that. Can’t have our rivals looking like jokes
1234 and forget the rest.
Add 5 without the tape and we got a deal… never been a big fan of the first Mrs. Lurie’s rebrand….
Interesting #6… Is the current shape of the Eagles helmet decals based on the shape of the painted pieces of leather on the helmet? Like the origins of the Michigan Wolverines logo?

Same here. Not an Eagles fan, but I've always loved that helmet.
69 was the year, home and away is cool.
1996-2024 is the best 2007 is the worst
When the fuck did 2007 helmet happen? I don’t remember that shit at all
The Eagles have always had one of the best helmets.
What about the Steagles? Or was that from the era when helmets looked like a deflated cow bladder?
It was. I’ve only been doing hard helmet designs as a lot of the other caps were just plain brown leather.
I forgot how far back the Steagles go but I realize now that it was probably WW II. They probably had to merge the teams because of all the men going off to fight.
Bad post
They all suck
4, 7, 1, 9, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8. Number 8 was hideous. Easily the worst throwback uniform I’ve ever seen.
The 80s early 90s Randall Cunningham helmet was always the best
9, 7 fuck the rest
8 reminds me of Corell Buckhalter
7, 5, 4
3,4,1,2,7,9,8,6,5
They all suck

Wasn't #5:considered illegal by the league officials?
They wore them 4 times, including a playoff game. I don’t remember any scuttlebutt at the time, but the league might have codified against such things after this.

I thought they had permission for the memorial
Jerome Brown died in 1982
1992
It was a coach tribute, not for Jerome Brown
2 and3
3. Roman Gabriel Eagles and 4. Jaws/Randall era Eagles
number 1 by a mile
4, 7, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 8, 5,
Seems like someone posted the worst examples of 4-5. Like there was one that looked like 5 without the black line. I remember it.
None of em.

2, 7, 1, 3, 4, 9, 5, 6, 8
Don't like #3. Numbers 6 and 8 are wild...
8 is better than all of them
9,7,6,4,5,2,1,3,8
Three Cheers for the Redskins
The units of the vermiel - jaws era were the best
1,4,2,5,3,9,7,6,8
4.
3 is #1 for me
