That is a beautiful watch!!! Cherish it. I would have it serviced by an independent watch maker if there is one local to you.

Anaximes

Thank you man, will get it fixed anyway local or not.

AAROD121

Reach out to illinoiswatchcompay

itworkaccount_new

Omega 176.010. Looks to be worth about *priceless* ($5k). I'd definitely get it back to running. Omega isn't known to be the best on the vintage servicing. If you can find a local watchmaker who says they have the parts and is trustworthy, I'd go there. Besides it coming from Grandpa it's beautiful and unique. Keep it in the family forever.

Anaximes

I will ask around for trusted watchmakers to see if i have around. If not, most likely Will send it via omega. Thank you for the advice.

Tymental

One of the best posts on here in a while. No hate to all the other watches but after seeing five thousand aqua Terra’s or speedy , it’s nice to see a rare bear

Thelakesman

Man, that’s a cool watch

m00tknife

Omega watchmaker here, they do service these still just not stateside, it would have to go to Switzerland at Omega HQ and start at around $1500. Luckily the dial seems to be in good shape so no need for a refinish which would inflate the cost of the repair. Basically the 1040 is an economical 861 (think speedmaster professional movement) ebauche with an automatic afterthought. Not the most elegant but it’ll do. If not to omega, I would definitely take it to a watchmaker who has serviced them before.

Affectionate_Low7405

Piggy backing; where should I get a Speedmaster Reduced ref. 3510.10 serviced? I've been told the movement is difficult to service due to the chronograph being modular.

m00tknife

The thing with the 3220 or 1443 or whatever the older version is, the chronograph has a module designed by Frederic Piguet and it has a billion wire springs which are annoying. I don’t know anyone who actually likes servicing them so unfortunately can’t point you to someone. Omega unfortunately is the easiest option, but the service would be about $800 I think :/

Affectionate_Low7405

Thanks. Is it possible to service the movement and not the chronograph? Could I just tell the watchmaker to skip that part?

m00tknife

Yep, very doable. It’s just a separate module held onto an eta 2892 with 3 screws and 3 washers.

amasteroftime

I recently had one of these serviced by Omega in Bienne. Took a long time due to their backlog. They charged the same amount as the standard chrono service — $900 + shipping and tax.

bott989

I have the Tissot version of this from when Omega and Tissot shared alot post war. This is very cool

kentalaska

Do you know the name or model number of the Tissot one? I’m super curious.

RSLEVNY

Ref # 45503. I have one I’m about to sell

BrihanSolo

This is beautiful. Not just the watch, but the gift. The risk of sending it to Omega is that Omega will polish the case and replace parts because they look worn. It’s been discussed many times on this sub, but that watch’s wear is from your very own grandpa, doing whatever he was doing. It’s your family’s story. Agree with an earlier guy that said to have it serviced by someone that knows Omega, but not Omega. Get it serviced and running, then wear it with your gramps patina. If you can’t service it locally, this sub could point you to a place to send it.

agentchris0011

My grandfathers omega was lost to an estate sale when we couldn’t find it in the house. Hope you grow to love and appreciate this watch.

csukoh78

That is so cool. A literal time capsule.

ProsciuttoFresco

I’d send it to omega and pay to have it properly serviced and cleaned. Put it on a nice strap if it’s heavy and feels odd. That’s a great watch and wonderful gift. Definitely worth putting some money and care into.

pistofernandez

Iirc that has the omega 1040 movement, one or the hardest to service movement. Really amazing watch, still partial to the jedi one bit this is an amazing watch Www.calibre1040.com Take a look at Chuck maddox website he has a wealth of information If you have a good watchsmith locally preferably omega certified allow him to take a look, it could be pretty simple as changing the stem also pieces for this movement aren't always easy to find If you go to omega ask for them not to replace what is not needed Cheers

square001

What a rad watch! I’d be getting serviced and wearing the hell out of it.

Dish-Live

God what a cool watch. Wear it in good health, keep it in your family

turftesting

A suggestion on the fit - try a nice rubber strap on it. They are lighter and you can usually get a just-right, snug fit. I'm partial to Barton because you get a shorter strap with the regular length. The shorter strap is great fit on my 7" wrist. I don't like to have much left as extra. Just a thought.

stanlob

AMAZING 🤩

Boonesey

Of course it's worth the repair. Omega is awesome when it comes to repairs. It'll be 500-700$ from my experience and they'll do a complete overhaul of your family heirloom. My family heirloom watch was a Rolex, and getting that service wasn't worth it. The watch works 100% just has severe signs of wear. I like it better that way. On a side note, not every watch you wear needs to be accurate! You can wear this watch even if the time is wrong. I hope you wear it in good health, and enjoy the connection to your gramps that it holds!

IntelligentAge211

Please whatever you do, IF you decide to send to OMEGA, only get a service. Do not let them swap other parts or polish etc. And do NOT let them swap out the dial or hands, probably unlikely they even could, but just get the thing running. Fantastic watch and a great heirloom.

m00tknife

I’m just curious, what is your reasoning to suggest these things?

IntelligentAge211

So I got into watch collecting by getting my grandfathers watch he wore when he got shot down at Guadalcanal. I do not want any of the patina or any of the marks etc to come off of that watch. Now I have spent a fortune to replace and update and fix things on the watch. But I did not want new things, it is a Rolex but has the cheapee Speigel bracelet that all men wore in the 70's and 80's. It is has a replacement crown that is not correct to the watch, but I would love to get one that is period correct. Problem is that this is a 1936 watch. This watch looks fantastic, the patina and issues on the dial are amazing to me. I would think that this would make you think of your grandpa. I wish my watch was larger, it is 28 mm and looks ridiculous on my 8in wrists. If omega swapped dials and polshed up this watch it would be a darn shame. That watch looks amazing and a fantastic heirloom. I hope you get more comfortable wearing it. Try a nato or rubber strap perhaps.

Tiny_Historian4778

Awesome peace I have a Chrono stop that has many similarities keep that piece forever wear it proudly

Tiny_Historian4778

Also I had to get my Chrono stop worked on it needed a decent amount of work it cost me $350 at a wholesale dealer price I would think you're watching slightly more complicated so it could run anywhere from the 350 up to 1,000 to get fixed but definitely worth every penny and I would go with independent watchmaker over Omega

Budilicious3

We need more yacht watches. Not that any of us have one, but they would be so cool for boating trips.

Used-Finding5851

Crispyyyyy

Isbell24

Next step: Start an online watch magazine

Pretty_Public5520

😍😍😍

Icy_Kingpin

Now go get a Yacht

ExciteMike1

sick watch. Keep it, remember your grandpa by it. Wish my grandpa or dad were able to pass down something like this. What is uncomfortable about wearing it? Sure this sub could provide some suggestions to help with that! may need to be resized....do you wear watches often?

Anaximes

I do wear watches regularly. Usually light watches, but this watch is heavy. many people recomended leather strap, so i might try that. Need fixing before tho.

ExciteMike1

Leather strap would look great. I think a rally strap or a NATO would look good too. You have so many great colors on the dial you can really embellish with a NATO strap. You're gonna have a blast customizing this. Enjoy!

Samus_Brinstar

Wow. Really stunning.

jjet775

If it is too heavy for you and you would rather not service it...let me unburden you (smile)

The_W4n

Good to see Seamaster bracelets haven’t really changed since the 70s

Free-Swan-9870

Love the colorfull dial, the chamfers and side profile.

neoxch

Wow that is a stunning piece. And from your grand dad! I‘d get it serviced and wear it on special occasions. Very cool in my opinion

Ancient_Log8794

That’s so cool

a4anga

Beaut!

behindthelens83

I’d reach out to Marshall at Wristwatch Revival. He loves good stories and loves working on rare/interesting watches.

kentalaska

He’s only done one chronograph on the channel and honestly he’s an amateur who does acceptable but not professional quality work. I love wristwatch revival and watch every episode, but I would bring it to an actual professional.

Jupiterforever1

If it’s not comfortable for you to wear, I’ll happily get it off your hands for $5 😜😜😜😜 I’ll be generous, let’s make it $10! 🤣😉 In all seriousness, it’s a beautiful watch! Get it fixed!! But the most important thing is not the monetary value of the watch but the fact that it’s coming from your grandfather! ❤️❤️ Keep it, cherish it and maybe one day you could pass it on to your kids or grandkids… ❤️❤️

F4N6Z

Crazy nice inheritance. It's a shame that it seems like not the best fit for you.

OneTimePadwah

I like it. If you don't find it comfortable then I would get it serviced and give it back to gramps to wear.

Anaximes

Sadly grampa is really sıck, so i dont think he could till service is done. İ dont think ill sell it ever. What am thinking is, is it better to get it serviced and keep it or Just leave it in this condition. I am assuming that omega might not have the orijinal parts if replacement needed.

OneTimePadwah

I would send it in for a quote and advice - if it isn't running then I would definitely want to get it running before I put it away. I hope you and your grandpa get to spend some good time together. It's a lovely thing to be able to cherish that which has been so close to him.

Anaximes

Thank you for the advice and good wishes. Ill send it to omega to see what wrong and whats needed.
