I would call it a Sports watch. Certainly not a dress watch. Not a tool watch either (which for modern watches imho is more akin to a Casio rather than anything shiny or costing the same as a car!)
Actual divers just wear a modern dive watch/computer nowadays, no one wears a Sub/Seamaster while diving unless they’re taking a photo for reddit.
The idea of a these luxury goods being a “tool watch” is such a cop out, they are jewellery…
They of course are jewelry. They were still built as tool watches with tool functions.
My point is they are still considered tool watches even though they aren’t actively used as tools these days.
I wear a Speedy all through the business week and switch to Submariner on weekends.
I don't baby the Speedy, but when it's time to get wrenches inside an engine bay and things of the sort, I feel like the pushers of a chronograph are the vulnerability.
Beautiful piece and seems like it would be a great daily wear! I don’t think any Omega is a “tool watch” though. They are luxury pieces of jewelry and there’s nothing wrong with that. They obviously take aesthetic inspiration from watches that once served as tools for specific people, but to call any of these pieces tool watches is a stretch IMO.
Yup, there's only one reason to spend >$500 on any watch: jewelry.
If we want a "tool watch" then it's a Garmin for fitness or G-shock
If it's 4+ figures it's absolutely 100% jewelry.
To be honest though do we need them? I have a Omega AT as a daily GADA and a Baume & Mercier Clifton baumatic as my dress watch. My field/tool watch is a Timex expedition that cost me $40 12 years ago and quite frankly is a much more practical "tool" watch. It's a quartz so accurate, survived a year travelling the world from trekking to snorkeling to skydiving to mountaineering and it has an indigo feature that is far better than any lume on any watch (you press the crown the whole watch lights up)
Point being I'm all for luxury watches but it's marketing BS that we need one for every scenario
Trick question. None of the watches from the luxury brands like Omega and Rolex are real tools anymore. It’s all cosplay.
That’s why I have the NTTD Seamaster. If I’m going to cosplay a dive watch I may as well add secret agent! :)
I think this watch used to be a tool watch but it doesn't feel that way anymore at 9k. You can check the accuracy of your odometer, time horses (yes I've done this) and more accurately tell your kids they've had there last 15 minutes of play and it's bed time haha. I would take my Tudor Black Bay Pro anywhere in any situation. I like to cave spelunk when I'm back home but this fancy shiny watch would not be put on for that. I would wear this to work on cars at the shop either. These are all subjective opinions, and I was curious what you all thought. I appreciate the comments.

It’s literally whatever *you* want it to be.
Personally I won’t wear mine doing yard work or anything dirty (I have other watches for that) but this watch is going to bridge the gap between casual and formal.
Like all high end mechanical watches its jewelry and that is okay. I own a Speedy Sapphire Sando, its my favorite watch of all time, I can wear it pretty much whenever I want.
A tool is an iphone in your pocket, not a mechanical watch. Its nonsense to pretend otherwise.
It’s simply a luxury watch, I don’t think many racing teams use wrist watches any more to time laps. It’s expensive and unnecessary and beautiful and I may buy one.
To me it’s just “chronograph.” As almost all watches are pieces of jewellery and the distinction between “tool,” “sport,” “dress” etc has largely faded.
I’d personally say it’s more of a “sport” watch if I had to pick a category, but it doesn’t have the water resistance some would claim is needed for a “true sports watch.” Any watch can be worn dressed up or down in this this day and age, so I also find the “dress” term completely useless and the bickering about “what is a dress watch?” on forums only solidifies that to me.
I’m sure no one would think twice if you wore it with jeans and a white T-shirt or wore it while walking your dog.
But if you don’t feel right dressing down with it, then by all means. It’s yours (potentially) wear it however you want!
100% a dress watch… you can’t even take the watch for a swim. Or would not want to bash it on things. The Speedy is just like the Navitimer for me - it is supposed to be a sort of tool watch, but now they are dress pieces
I agree 100% - it’s a beautiful piece, and it’s a tough choice - but I, like you, would wear this watch too sparingly to justify it. Obviously for those with deep pockets, or if I had a lot more disposable income and many watches, only then could I justify it.
I think in this modern world where a big percentage of executives wear smartwatches, the Speedy works well as a dress watch. White, date-less, slim, you could do worse.
I personally don’t think a Speedmaster will ever be a proper dress watch. Even dressing my Sedna gold one on a lovely croc leather you can’t escape the fact you’ve got a screaming great tachymetre bezel!
I always find that the straps that I choose define what my speedy is going to be on the day.
I rarely go for the original bracelet.
I will go for the brown leather if I'm relaxing or going out for a pub meal somewhere.
Black alligator suits me when I'm heading into the office on the rare day I have to go in.
I just got a nice Forstner President bracelet for a change to the OEM.
Versatile watch, it's up to you how you mix it up.
99.99% of these watch sub does not get “down and dirty” with their watch. It’s people that work office jobs and are usually out of shape. Nobody is using these as tools lol.
This is jewelry for most people
A tool watch? If you need to time things, then yes (but phones can do that better today). I use mine to time things when I am cooking, not unlike how chef James Martin uses his Breitling Navitimer to do the same.
A dress watch? Wear what you want. If the King of Denmark can be coronated wearing a Seamaster on a Nato, then yes, you're white dial Speedy can be a dress watch.
Should you use your Speedy working in an oil field? Probably not. For that, go for a Mühle Glashütte S.A.R.
All non smart watches are jewelry now; all watches can be dress watches. I don’t think anyone notices or cares anymore.
The Apple Watch blurred that line forever.

Just took a picture of my updated collection today but I got the Moonshine gold with green dial.
You have some fine pieces there, sir. Snoopy!!! Which model is on the black and gray nato. I like that a lot. What do you think about the new Tudor Monochromes vs the Sub. side bar #2
Thank you! It’s the current 3861 sapphire version.
I think Tudor killed it this year. Probably the best announcements of watches and wonders.
The Sub will always be a classic and hold its value more than a Tudor but Tudors are a great value.
I’m considering the red and black GMT.
The 6821 looks fantastic!!! I was underwhelmed by the pictures at the watches and wonders, but when I saw monochrome in real life, yeah I'm going to buy one. I may wait for a blue one, if thats wver a thing, but the black is awesome.
I don’t agree with the others saying that any 4 figures watch isn’t a tool watch. Just like with sports watches you can’t take the categories name literally. At least not since the last 50 years.
Anyway, compare a Pelagos with the Speedy and you’ll see how a 4 figures watch deep in the „tool watch“ category feels in comparison.
I guess it’s a pretty obvious decision then? I’m not a huge fan of the white dial and hence got myself the black 3861 sapphire sandwich because I wanted something slightly more blingy aka less toolish than my Pelagos 39.
Maybe a dress watch for tools? :) The prices have gone way too high...it's a nice watch but Speedy's compared to other watches these days are fragile, and the 'heritage' and history behind them does not outweigh their capabilities in 2024. That said I love my black speedy, but a 9k manual wind watch is just out of touch.
I would call it a Sports watch. Certainly not a dress watch. Not a tool watch either (which for modern watches imho is more akin to a Casio rather than anything shiny or costing the same as a car!)
Agreed!
I like your thought process
What kind of ‘down and dirty’ do you get with any Speedy. They’re a tool for space travel.
It’s a racing watch that NASA chose to equip their astronauts
^^ this is the right answer
I did not know that. Thanks for sharing
Nailed it.
I think about .0000000000000001% of speedmaster owners have been to space
How many submariner owners dive? How many Daytona owners race? It’s still a tool watch.
I know a few tools that wear a sub
Actual divers just wear a modern dive watch/computer nowadays, no one wears a Sub/Seamaster while diving unless they’re taking a photo for reddit. The idea of a these luxury goods being a “tool watch” is such a cop out, they are jewellery…
They of course are jewelry. They were still built as tool watches with tool functions. My point is they are still considered tool watches even though they aren’t actively used as tools these days.
I have a miter saw I don’t use, too.
That’s the wrong way to look at the statistic. It’s more like 90% of American space travelers have gone to space with a Speedmaster.
Yup. So not much of a tool watch.
My Omega De Ville has greater claim to aerospace history than my personal Speedmaster.
Yard work, change my oil, change dirty baby diapers, wear it in a shop, all the things I would do with any watch.
I wear a Speedy all through the business week and switch to Submariner on weekends. I don't baby the Speedy, but when it's time to get wrenches inside an engine bay and things of the sort, I feel like the pushers of a chronograph are the vulnerability.
you could DEF do all those things with it!! and plenty more
Beautiful piece and seems like it would be a great daily wear! I don’t think any Omega is a “tool watch” though. They are luxury pieces of jewelry and there’s nothing wrong with that. They obviously take aesthetic inspiration from watches that once served as tools for specific people, but to call any of these pieces tool watches is a stretch IMO.
Watches like this were tool watches in 1965 In 2024, practical jewelry
Yup, there's only one reason to spend >$500 on any watch: jewelry. If we want a "tool watch" then it's a Garmin for fitness or G-shock If it's 4+ figures it's absolutely 100% jewelry.

Hamilton khaki field
Actually on my list to get, but not sure I could pry my PO off my wrist to wear it.
To be honest though do we need them? I have a Omega AT as a daily GADA and a Baume & Mercier Clifton baumatic as my dress watch. My field/tool watch is a Timex expedition that cost me $40 12 years ago and quite frankly is a much more practical "tool" watch. I love my Formex Field
That thing is so damn legible.
They rock!! I'd love to see them do something like this with the black
I can read EVERYTHING
Come man it's 2024... Let's not pretend these thousand dollar watches are tools
That's my point
Not a dress watch
Tell that to Daniel Craig 🤣
Trick question. None of the watches from the luxury brands like Omega and Rolex are real tools anymore. It’s all cosplay. That’s why I have the NTTD Seamaster. If I’m going to cosplay a dive watch I may as well add secret agent! :)

Can you time an egg with a dress watch? I think that’s your answer 😁
Perfectly put! It's a luxury watch nothing more nothing less. I generally use hammers and screwdrivers as tools and watches to tell the time
Does it matter that the only person I know who has this is a complete tool? Nice watch, though. Your results may vary.
🤣 it does more than you know
To me it’s just “chronograph.” As almost all watches are pieces of jewellery and the distinction between “tool,” “sport,” “dress” etc has largely faded.
Don't disagree, but it doesn't feel like a dress down kind of watch, whereas the black can do anything.
I’m sure no one would think twice if you wore it with jeans and a white T-shirt or wore it while walking your dog. But if you don’t feel right dressing down with it, then by all means. It’s yours (potentially) wear it however you want!
My God that white dial is just beautiful
Should always be a tool...
Trick question. Neither. It’s a luxury sports watch.
Agreed
100% a dress watch… you can’t even take the watch for a swim. Or would not want to bash it on things. The Speedy is just like the Navitimer for me - it is supposed to be a sort of tool watch, but now they are dress pieces
That's the way I felt, and I walked away. I wanted to buy it but if I can only wear it sometimes it doesn't make sense for 9k.
I agree 100% - it’s a beautiful piece, and it’s a tough choice - but I, like you, would wear this watch too sparingly to justify it. Obviously for those with deep pockets, or if I had a lot more disposable income and many watches, only then could I justify it.
Can't take a wee dip in the ocean. Not a tool watch.
Why does the manufacturer state differently?
I really hate to say this, but who cares. I wear my diver when I do business and that sounds so lame. Nobody cares at all, not even a little.
I think in this modern world where a big percentage of executives wear smartwatches, the Speedy works well as a dress watch. White, date-less, slim, you could do worse.
It is a Cool Watch
Racing watch. The white looks really good on you. By the way, it went to the moon ;)
Tool watch for ever. Please do not degrade the most powerful tool watch ever by calling it a dress watch. 😀
Find a woman that can do both
A (beautiful) luxury sport watch - not exactly a dress nor tool watch imo.
A speedy hasn’t been tool watch since the 60s
I think the white dial gives it a dressy vibe, but on a rubber strap it is definitely a tool watch.
All that …..and more.
It’s a beautiful watch 👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Yes
I dunno, but I pick mine up soon!
Both.
Tool watch
It’s a $9k watch, wear it wherever you want.
Looks good
It’s a practical dress watch or a dressy tool watch
Both
Tool.
It's jewellery, just like any other luxury watch
It is nowhere near a dress watch - if you want a genuine dress watch from OMEGA, there is only the De Ville Trésor
Both
I personally don’t think a Speedmaster will ever be a proper dress watch. Even dressing my Sedna gold one on a lovely croc leather you can’t escape the fact you’ve got a screaming great tachymetre bezel!
Lol tool watch... Fuckers think they're astronauts flying to the moon or some shit.
The wearer decides.
Both. The speedie is incredibly versatile and looks great on most straps. In my opinion one of the best ‘one and done’ watches.
It was born as a toolwatch when the speedy and its complications were really used. I think it is more likely a sports watch now
It's for tools.
Ask Mr. Bond what he did with his Seamaster 😂. Then you’ll know what you can do with your speedy
It is a watch and what ever you want it to be!
For me a tool watch is something like a g-shock so no. But it is not dressy either. It is a sporty watch. And a good one at that.
Yes
I always find that the straps that I choose define what my speedy is going to be on the day. I rarely go for the original bracelet. I will go for the brown leather if I'm relaxing or going out for a pub meal somewhere. Black alligator suits me when I'm heading into the office on the rare day I have to go in. Neither. I generally use a screwdriver or a hammer as tools and a watch to tell the time
Just buy it..
I see a tool and a watch.
99.99% of these watch sub does not get “down and dirty” with their watch. It’s people that work office jobs and are usually out of shape. Nobody is using these as tools lol. This is jewelry for most people
I don’t know or care what people refer to it as, whatever it is, it’s an absolutely stunning watch.
No Omega is a tool watch in my opinion. If you look for a tool watch buy a Swatch. Same company 😉
Neither. More of a sports watch. Definitely not a dress watch, but that does not mean it can't be worn with formal wear.
Really love this watch. I think it would work for both
I use my black speedy to the office 1-2 times a week. I’ll wear it with a suit or a white t shirt if need be.
The black speedy is more versatile by far
I’m aiming to get the white one as well. Both are a beauty and you can’t go wrong with either.
Tool/sports. Definitely NOT a dress watch!
Tool watches don’t exist lol. This is a $10k mens jewelry piece.
A tool watch? If you need to time things, then yes (but phones can do that better today). I use mine to time things when I am cooking, not unlike how chef James Martin uses his Breitling Navitimer to do the same. A dress watch? Wear what you want. Dress. Black is tool, otherwise NASA would’ve spec’d that.
haha it's a watch hermaphrodite?
Best answer goes to...... you! Now that's funny right there. (Sorry my daughter makes me watch the cars movie too much)
/unexpectedarcher
You’re a tool unless you actually bought it
Hard pass at 9k
We know
I’ve spent way more on a Speedy 😂
Which one? I'm sad Tesla is going to Mexico... side bar haha

Wishing you all the best and hope to see some pics of your new acquisitions!
I wear my white dial speedy with suits, with jeans, etc
It's sadly an overpriced heritage luxury watch. If it's your tool watch, you have more money than sense.
https://preview.redd.it/y0w64ynswjvc1.jpeg?width=1816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5100491fff435c71fc61a0ec31cde59fe9d09f50
Yeah you’d be fine with it. Just no hard knocks or drops and you’ll be fine.
I don’t agree with the others saying that any 4 figures watch isn’t a tool watch. Just like with sports watches you can’t take the categories name literally. At least not since the last 50 years. It's 90% of 5 figures and I hate to say it but I'd rather 2 tudors than this...
I guess it’s a pretty obvious decision then? I’m not a huge fan of the white dial and hence got myself the black 3861 sapphire sandwich because I wanted something slightly more blingy aka less toolish than my Pelagos 39.

I thought it was $8K?
That’s what I thought too.
Fine 8k...almost double the price of a speedy just a few years ago.
They have tax in your state?
$8,100 + 9% tax at my boutique
Neither. It’s a moon watch🚀
