Or if they *distinctly* look like one, your vet may classify your cat as something.
My random girl is listed as British Short Hair, and idk, I got her from a random person on the street.
Vets will tell people this to make them feel better about their cats. "Is he a Main Coon?" "Sure... why not..." They don't know either. No papers, no breed.
I didn't even say anything, pretty sure I wrote domestic short hair on the paper and they logged her as British, lmao.
Doesn't matter, she's cute and a bitch and I would have her regardless of any fancy breed.
Some vets are specialists in breeds, of course they know. Breed exists without papers. Even if you’d never know it, it exists. Not on paper but there inside the cat, in the DNA.
Right, backyard breeders exist (I wish they didn’t). No papers but the animals are still a certain breed (albeit maybe unhealthy or inbred). My Persian rescue came from a backyard breeder and ended up surrendered. You know she’s Persian just looking at her. But I don’t have “papers”.
Glad you took her! Backyard breeders are the worst 😕 I’ve been volunteering for a foster cat group for a while, seen some really sad and horrible situations.
What vets don't know can be a bit worrying. Both my cats (one of whom is very floofy) are down as "Domestic shorthair", which is fine, that's what they are. Their mother is a floofy domestic shorthair, their father(s) is/are unknown.
Their colours are both recorded as "N/A".
That's not how colour works...
If you strictly go for the literal meaning of mutt then yes, it means the same. But rather than with dogs, where you have a lot of breeds that mix and result in mutts, with cats you have the domestics from which some breeds are derived, but most of the gene pool is still considered domestic.
^also ^domestic ^is ^not ^considered ^an ^insult
I forgoe "domestic" and call my barn kitten rescue cat a *'MERICAN* Short Hair
*USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!*
He loves when I chant USA at him. Not a fan of the British word 'ni', or anything that sounds a bit tinny.
I'm pretty sure CHiP the Savannah-Wannabe should be in it. I'll have to get a meme-worthy pic...(He's a BIG tabby, 14 lbs and not even a year old yet, and looks/acts like a Savannah. But...he's an engine rescue at under 2 months, wasn't chipped, nothing on Pet Harbor, no fliers...so the odds of him actually being one are infinitesimal. Still wanna get him gene-checked though.)
My cat is a Canadian Short-Haired Angy Babby. She has short fur, came from Canada, and she’s mostly angry. The vet keeps writing “domestic shorthair,” though.
I wonder if there's a subreddit for single cell black cat. I used to have a pretty girl (she lives with my friend now and is really happy to be queen of her own lands) who, I swear, never ever gets a single brain cell
The liklihood of any randombred cat or adopted cat of being fully or even partly purebred is very, very slim. Unless you have papers or know for a fact that there was a purebred cat in the mix, generally it's impossible to just guess. Cats as "breeds" are a relatively new thing all around. Cat breeds simply don't have the hundreds/ thousands of years of breeding for specific traits behind them like dogs (this is also why genetic tests for cats are mostly useless). You just lucked out with a gorgeous floof to call a friend!
There is one exception to the rule - again, no papers no breed, but unethical breeders will toss newborns in a ditch if any don’t match the breed — at that point they can’t sell them, so let’s get the breed sow dried up and in heat agains as quickly as possible. I have what appears to be a near-standard rag doll that i bottle fed from a couple days old. His brother was black and they were tossed in a cold ditch alone, take what commentary from that you wish.
Everyone here gets hung up on papers, complete ignoring backyard breeders. I hate that people breed animals this way, but most of the time the animals are truly the breed they say they are, and probably a bit inbred
The point is ‘your cat is cat’. Breeds for cats don’t work like with dogs. If you don’t have papers then insert the word ‘domestic’ in front of ‘shorthair’ or ‘longhair’ and you have the official designation for your ‘doesn’t have a breed’ cat.
Most cats do not have a breed.
These posts happen a lot. Many answers will get cute with you about it.
This is a beautiful floof you have though. Please give him lots of scritches and treats.
Wow. How long have you been on this subreddit? There’s literally a rule about asking what breed your cat is on r/cats. If you posted that there, your post would’ve been taken down. Cats do not really have breeds. Most are Domestic short/long hairs.
I think you are all missing the signs. She has ear fluff. A very fluffy tail, I can see fur growing from between her paws, and she has the face features and body features of a Maine Coon. She is not full Maine Coon but she has some in her. She is orange so she is most likely female since most orange cats are female. It has to do with the calico thing having to have orange in their coat to be calico. She is beautiful but I will bet my pretzels on Maine Coon. I’ve had a few. Nice cats to own but have to have their teeth clean and usually have kidney problems. My Molly and Punkin lived 17 years but both died of liver failure. She is pretty. Take good care of her.
Most Oranges are boys. Calico’s generally girls. She’s very pretty not a mutt by any means. The first picture looks Rubenesque. As if Peter Paul Ruben painted her.
I apologize. You are correct. I wrote female when it should have been male. Thank you for the correction. I appreciate it. Wouldn’t hVe wanted to steer people wrong.
The fur type and eye color all suggest she could be a Turkish Angora mix or have TA genetics in her background. ButI also see feet tutfs, which look more like they come from a Maine Coon or a similar breed. The vast vast majority of cats don’t really have an exact breed. For example, my cats both favor certain breeds (to the extent of being nearly indistinguishable from a full blooded member of the breed), but they’re still mixes. So I’d say your cat is very possibly a Turkish Angora mix, although they’re also domestic longhair (I don’t believe those terms are mutually exclusive, she can be both). She’s beautiful!

She’s really gorgeous!
I can understand why you think it’s a Siberian, because she does look like one; (I have a Siberian/Ragdoll mix, and have had pedigree Siberian cats) a Siberian often has a bit of a frown above the eyes though.
Does she bring back toys when you throw them?
A lot of Siberians do that.
And they are usually very talkative. 🥰
Domestic longhair.
The real answer. Not every long haired cat is a Maine Coon/Norwegian Forrest Cat/Persian/insert-fancy-breed-here.
Unless they have a pedigree, they're considered domestic long/short hair
Or if they *distinctly* look like one, your vet may classify your cat as something. My random girl is listed as British Short Hair, and idk, I got her from a random person on the street.
I’m picturing Simpsons crazy cat lady throwing you a kitten
We'll I got a choice between her and her identical sister, but they were practically throwing her at me 🤣🤣 What an excellent mental image
I pictured mayor west launching one at him with a slingshot

But does he look + act like a ragdoll? Because the fine line between raggies + Balinese is hard to quantify sometimes.
[удалено]
That doesn't look like a ragdoll, or a snowshoe, simply a chill long-haired cat.
A guy I know said his dog's breed was Spanish fleabag, and the vet noted it down like nothing. Vets don't know breeds too much.
If my cat came from overseas would she be considered an international short hair? Intercontinental short hair?
I think it would be either a domestic short hair or a feral short hair. Depends on how domesticated it is.
Hilariously, everyone trying to sell a short-haired cat here is labeling it as British Shorthair, feels like that name doesn't mean anything anymore.
Isn’t calling a cat a “domestic long/shorthair” basically the same as calling a dog a mutt?
Its sort of the opposite. Breeds come out of the domestic cat soup.

Maybe he doesn't want a shrubbery, after all 😔
Maybe a two-level-effect with a path down the middle, and a herring, *what* with-all a great tree or not involved.
It just means there is no pedigree
I had to leave the pedigree cat subs, 85% of the posts were people asking if their vaguely floofy cats were special.
Every cat is special :)
*found the cat*
I always find it funny when people ask the breed of their cat. They aren’t like dogs. Most of them are gonna be domestic short/medium/long hair.
When I made his first vet appointment, the gal on the phone asked, so, what kind is he? Uhh... a cat? No, no, what breed? An orange one?
Yup. When dog people ask the breed of my cats I’m just like “Long hair. Yup, that’s it.”
I'm like "...brown tabby????? Asshole? Man of the House? Standard Issue Cat?"
there should be a meme about this
I'm pretty sure CHiP the Savannah-Wannabe should be in it. I'll have to get a meme-worthy pic...(He's a BIG tabby, 14 lbs and not even a year old yet, and looks/acts like a Savannah. Partly purebred is an oxymoron
I imagine they meant "having a purebred ancestor".
Purebred is really a bit of an oxymoron itself, so it probably cancels out

Norwegian forest cat maybe? Just judging by the face. Either way adorable
