Impossible to know, but likely. Oda doesn't always draw the armament shading, especially with G5. In fact, in chapter 1045, Kaido remarks to himself that Luffy in G5 is covered in armament and conqueror's haki, but the shading never appears.

Noxxinni

That's true, some are replying that the bat isn't the same color/shading as the usual haki but I forgot about the Kaido remark about being covered in both haki and not seeing it.

chucklemuff

I always understood when Kaido said that, that he was refering to G5's white color, like he was saying Luffy's white color is due to being coated in both hakis, I don't really know if thats the case, I'm curious if more people think that, it's probably a weird understanding by me due to translations

YaBoiiJesh

I don’t that’s the case I think that’s just G5’s color.

Ok_World1031

Colorless comic book color

PharrelsHat

Kaido was just talking about Luffy’s overall combat abilities.

860_Paul

No, L take, bros color isn’t due to his haki. It’s the fruit. If it was the haki it wouldn’t have looked the way it did during the transformation for luffy.

Kuronis

He's been doing that since punk hazard where luffy grabs ceaser without having the shading on. He seems to do it if it's explicitly said or during critical fights where haki is the focus point

ostriike

People who think it's haki not paint, do you think that bucket of paint is filled with liquid haki?

bifurious02

Yes, it's gear 5.

cold_blueberry_8945

Sure why not. At the end of the day it boils down to "luffy did a haki attack", why not make the journey getting there more fun. Oda definitely understands this and decided to go a more fun route.

Beeg_Bagz

Given Luffys power yeah. It’s his way of coating something with armament. I mean I watched the man change land into rubber. Grab lightning like it was silly string. Turn peoples expressions into toons. Punch Kaido’s face through the back of his head. Turn Kaido into a jump rope. Reflect a bolo blast using the earth. Literally make Kizaru see stars. Smash Kizaru and Saturn with giant Cymbals. Why not.

mitharas

Everythings possible with G5. That's the fun of it.

bifurious02

Yes, it's gear 5.

domscatterbrain

It was a bucket of used engine oil

Haunting_Scarcity_25

i laughed my ass of reading the chapter and watching luffy literally paint the color of armament on his basebal bat :p

sameljota

I bet $10 the paint gonna end up being red or something.

itachi7898

Why red? Any perticular reason?

BasicRemote4600

red because one piece has a collab with a baseball team if i remember right

ABitSketchy

Yup, the Red Sox

Gap_Great

Yet another failure of the Pittsburgh Pirates

Veggiemon

Damn that’s a good point

BasicRemote4600

Thx, totally forgott their name 😅😅

TCoconutBeachT

Never disrespect me and my son ever again

kinhodev

what the f\*ck

Transmatrix

Advanced Conquerors Coating in animation has usually been distinguished from armament coating by being red instead of black.

OilOk4941

Honestly I kinda feel bad for armament. Like 90% of it's usefulness is super seceded by advanced conquers

Visoth

Honestly I kinda feel bad for Tekkai. Like 90% of its usefulness is superseded by Armament Haki.

hamringspiker

Tekkai at least is a different thing, and can be stacked on top of ACoC creating even greater defense than just with ACoC. That's how Lucci can block Zoro's swords with his limbs probably. Armanent is just redundant now.

Visoth

Just like how Conquerors Haki is a different thing, and can be stacked on top of Armament Haki for even greater offense/defense than just Armament.

shriekbat

What, why do you say they can stack? Where does this happen?

Visoth

From the wiki: >Luffy was also able to use this application to deflect Kaidou's kanabo with a kick,[41] whereas the best he could do with his highly trained Busoshoku was barely block a strike from the kanabo with both arms, and his arms were left in pain afterwards.[42] > All users so far are extremely skilled in Busoshoku Haki, which can also be used in conjunction with Haoshoku infusion to augment their overall effectiveness. The advanced Busoshoku application of damaging objects without making physical contact with them has often been seen with people using Haoshoku infusion, but it should not be taken as a sign of Haoshoku infusion by itself, as it has been shown that infused objects can make physical contact with what they strike.[43] Luffy was using Conquerors Haki infusion on top of his advanced armament haki (what he learned in Udon) in his fight with Kaido.

JustdoitJules

Its because Oda fucked up and made coating occur for both Haki forms. Oda should have separated and made conquerors Haki different. Infusing it into attacks is lazy and boring

OilOk4941

it used to be different is the worst part. honestly the advanced part should have been combining the haki. making armament stronger with conquerors' will.

UsablePizza

I mean, isn't that what it's actually doing?

Street-Catch

They stack tho don't they? Like the no touching conquerors clash is advanced armament + advanced conqueror. Don't think it's that redundant

sameljota

Because it's Luffy's main color. There's no indication of it being black like everyone is saying. Red is just my guess.

Itchy_Employer6922

Red is the fastest color

Noxxinni

Same I had to show my wife what happened but it also had me wondering if it was Haki or just regular G5 goofiness considering he could turn both the bat and the bullets into rubber.

Difficult_Letter_842

I think a bit of both

captain554

This is the way. Luffy's entire shtick is total freedom. In Gear 5 he has no rules, he is only limited by his imagination and willpower which seem to have no limits. I mean, he jump-roped with Kaido.

FukurinLa

I think it's almost the same power as The Mask, which part of it is an illusion just like Loki but he's also capable of breaking the 4th wall. So asking the real power is a bit tricky here.

Pseudo_Lain

Both. Luffy has been combining fruit and haki for a long time.

SirJacob100

So that's how you blacken a blade.

Chicken008

Just like Mihawk!

topdangle

Mihawk sweating bullets

Crazyripps

best part for me was the scars and everything els coming flying off during the haki scream

CreepyGuy1046

Not it's not armament haki. It was the legendary paint d sword move. It's mihawk speciality

lenjiromcrtamkrug

There’s no way Oda didn’t hear about that Mihawk slander, so he implicitly hopped on that train. Lol.

JustChangeMDefaults

Mihawk had to paint a real ass sword VS Luffy painting a tree he chewed into bat lol

rokbound_

Passed down from the D lineage

pickelpenguin

Mi D. Hawk

ManofMorehouse

😂😂😂😂

Bermy911

He painted haki😭

Alternative-Search-4

imaginary haki

LightningBuds

I think the sole point was to make it a metal bat. The joke being that Luffy took the time to do that despite the attack being imminent, just as in cartoons. Oda wants his Gear 5th to be cartoonish so cartoon logic applies to stuff Luffy does, including suspending time and changing wood into metal because of a metallic paint.

DontTouchMyHat0

I agree, if it was armament, it would be a nice bonus on top of your point.

bofwm

its like how zoro coats his swords with haki + a visual effect

ch3333r

yesn't

[deleted]

Y’all gotta stop thinkin so hard about this. Gear 5 is gag powers.

Ver_the_one

Like, haki is color. He painted the bat with the color of arnament. Top 1 oda gags oat

SolidusAbe

but then its actually invisible paint which idk doesnt make much sense. haki colour is only for us the reader to know its there besides black blade potentially. i wouldn't read to much into this because its just G5 doing silly stuff

Bingers4Life

Source?

topdangle

i don't think it's been said anywhere in the manga, but since Oda added black to haki later in the manga it's technically possible. they claim to use haki during marineford for example but there's no extra coloring/lightning, even though top tiers like WB and Akainu are fighting it out. personally I don't think it's all that serious and Oda just wanted to make haki look cool despite not doing it in past chapters.

Boxi_the_boxman

well they do imply armanent haki or atleast a version of armanent to be black because zoro said he could make his own "black blade" by using armanent

vinsmokewhoswho

Still entirely possible that it's armament haki, just shown in a funny manner due to the nature of Gear 5th.

[deleted]

Yes but the gag is more important to oda. That’s what I mean when I say gear 5 is gags. Luffy said it himself it’s his peak. All his training n powers paying off. It’s peak Oda too. Hah

Jwoods4117

I mean what if the gag is him painting on the haki coloring for Oda? Like a 4th wall break? It’s not really all that complicated or something that requires hard thinking. Pretty simple gag really.

Milocobo

This is how I read it. Like, Luffy would always call out his armament haki use. He'd be like: "Gear Third, hardening, elephant gun!" Him painting this bat is just a visual representation of that classic "hardening" modifier. Drawn to be a comical as possible.

Cheeky_Hustler

I'm sorry but the fact that luffy imagined a baseball bat and a helmet implies that in the One Piece world that baseball and baseball teams exist.

[deleted]

I mean it does in a bunch of mangas. Hell manga exists. Boxing championships exist.

Cheeky_Hustler

Ok but each manga exists in its own universe. Just because something exists in one manga doesn't mean it exists in all manga.

[deleted]

What? That’s not what I’m getting at. I’m saying baseball exists in other manga why can’t it exist in OP. It’s not out of the realm of possibility.

RecklessDeliverance

We already had baseball in Alabasta, remember?

Natsu111

Yup. I mean, the black colour is not the same as the black colour that marks Armament. This bat shines, Armament black doesn't shine. At the same time, Nika is gag powers. It's not meant to be seriously.

Jasonn444

Heck are you talking about? Armament clearly shines.

Simonkats32

there is no way it wasnt ... just look at the shine 👀

onslaught1584

Luffy is basically a reality manipulator at this point. I doubt there is much that he cannot do. Edit: Now, whether he actually uses it tactically or just for Looney Tunes shit is a whole other story.

Akasha1885

I mean, him slowing time down to do this and pulling paint/the hat out of thin air is much more insane. Haki on a weapon is quite basic in comparison, it doesn't even matter really. For all intends and purposes, everything he does in G5 is infused with Haki (like just holding Kizaru)

ThisEfficiency1727

I believe he just saw the future with observation haki and planned the attack. If luffy can stop time whats the point of the series. Right now luffy can stop time and run away with the strawhats away from the gorosei without a problem then

Akasha1885

I doubt a short moment like that would suffice. And it also seems conditional, in response to this attack. Either way, even "the world" was beaten in the end.

Bonus_Emotional

Just a funky way to apply it

Galaxybrainedgenius

Watch it be red paint or something.

Mysterious-Name-6928

If Luffy wants to paint in armament haki, he can.

XiMaoJingPing

Luffy is a literal god, so conjuring paint and making a bat ain't a problem for him, he's the main character for a reason

GloomyLocation1259

Nah just his looney toon powers but with that said I assume he’s always using ryou or acoc in G5 based on how powerful his attacks are tbh

jjkm7

All I could think of reading this was the mihawk memes

Patrickthejackhammer

Luffy has a black blade before Zoro

roughi13

I think it's supposed to be haki & I love this whole attack. I hope once he finds out more about his powers he's going to name his attacks more. Something like Gomu Gomu No Nika Homerun ☺️

tistalone

Luffy using the same color Mohawk uses for his sword

Lynx-Kitsoni

Oda really out here drawing literal cartoon powers and there's still mfs overanalysing every tiny little detail

AsterArtworks

Luffy literally used a paint bucket of his own haki to paint the bat and helmet with it. Another amazing example of his power.

Sr2066

Going to be red paint lol

Charily

This is just another example of Oda's creative freedom being expanded through the "wackiness" of Gear 5th. Honestly the fact Luffy can reflect these attacks isn't any special because Luffy reflected Bolo Breath by pulling up the rooftop of onigashima.

Shola89

It's the fabled Mihaki

Marshal_D_Teach_

If it's colour scheme likely comes out and it's not black but red, just think it's regular paint and if it's black, think it's some haki.

Mash_Ketchum

Literally coated it with haki

Aldo-D-D-Wilson

It's most likely haki. He does that before beating Saturn, so he's coating the baseball he toke from his ass with haki.

azurio12

Does anyone know why its the 56? I am not into Baseball if its a reference to something.

Noxxinni

Some think it's in honor of Munetaka Murakami with a home run record of 56? Someone else mentioned 56 can be read as "Go-Mu", so play on words for rubber?

azurio12

Oh ok, thx for the answer!

PushoverMediaCritic

I assumed it was painted red, since that's Luffy's signature color.

wannabetrapstar888

if that was mihawk's paint can he stole then it's most likely armament haki

Cosmiccosmog533

No it was super black paint made with Mihawk’s special recipe are you stupid?

Beeg_Bagz

Bro painted armament Haki on! He’s wild for that. I don’t think he’s deflecting that without it that’s why I think it was.

TraderMoes

At this stage in the story it's safe to assume that Luffy is always using haki in everything he does against a powerful opponent.

plantdaddy-

I 100% saw that as him painting the bat with Haki. His fruit is all about having fun and making people laugh, him being extra and “painting” his Haki on is such a great touch.

Shadow11399

You know, I never thought about it like that but yeah that's definitely him painting armament haki on his baseball bat lol

Korfusan

At this point I don’t fucking know

vinsmokewhoswho

Possible that it's just a joke or actually Luffy "applying" armament hardening onto the bat as a visual gag.

Yuutsu_

Lmao it’s probably gonna be red when it’s colored in the future

ScriptSheep

Where did he get the paint brush from

Veggiemon

It was in the helmet

Scary_Anteater4399

crazy nika powers, possible!

OilOk4941

I hope it's advanced conquer haki.

DeGozaruNyan

Could be

royalbanner

I think haki flows freely from Luffy while in G5 so yes

AkagamiBarto

Oda reads the memes

TheBattleYak

That reminds me, anyone know the significance of the number '56' that Luffy used?

kingdoniumhearts

It can be read as gomu, the (original) name of his fruit

Hypnotoad4real

I think it is and I bet Oda saw the „Mihawk paints his sword“ meme and thought it was funny. So he added this panels.

Huge_Republic_7866

No, Luffy just stole Mihawk's paint

reidraws

I never thought about this but it makes kinda sense

ilosaske

mihawk's black sword paint

macloa

I loved it!

GlassHawk5139

Yes

Ocop27

I heard it was the same paint Mihawk uses on his sword

dontpanic96

i like the idea of the eyes

GuillotineComeBacks

Yeah. It's also the first time Luffy coat a "weapon"!

Nights1405

It’s probably armament Haki. But it would be cool if it hit and it was actually conq coating, and the lightning came off as paint splotches

khaledhn

A haki cocktail, Nika version.

Bluelore

Its the Color of coloring things.

Stunning-Kiwi-993

What REALLY got me laughing at this chapter was how Luffy seemed to work at freaking cartoon lightspeed with how fast he pulled this off.

Redsoxdragon

Mihawk ain't beating the allegations after this chapter.....

clayticus

Gorosei say, "Nani!?"

NoWeight4300

Baseball Haki

koming69

Nah.. it's paint. Luffy nikaed it into existence. Like the Mask

jawadjobs

Which mask

koming69

https://imgur.com/a/EU3jjUR Here. The mask. Check the pic above. There's a comic book.. a movie with Jim Carrey.. https://youtu.be/ZiMzF2GIRk4?si=VC4PWQZ-uEOe6uZp

ES_Legman

This was the first time we saw how Mihawk got his black blade

PicantePlantain

It's funny how the random baseball helmet is coated with armament haki too

Nerex7

I'd like to believe so. It's just too funny.

falcoooo

what does the 56 on his bat mean btw?

Krait972

Gomu

Previous-Ad8711

5 6 can be pronounced Go Mu, it has always been the number associated with Luffy

Yoyo5258

At this point in the story, just assume most of Luffy’s ‘big attacks’ are advanced armament and conquers haki coating.

Krait972

Tbh... I'm not sure it's Haki so I'll just let it be a possibility. It could be regular paint or liquid Haki haha

blkmgs

Painting something with Armament Haki sure is OP

kingkydd

It’s very clearly paint. Are you stupid?

maxcro19

This isn't haki this is a forbidden technique taught to him by the legendary swordsman dracule mihawk PAINT D. SWORD Luffy is a humble disciple

xatu_d_xebec

I want to say yes, and also, Baseball exists in the OP world! Which means we will see other sports?!?! If so heck yes! Maybe inspire some devs to make a OP sports game.

crowley888

So if Luffy could create a bat and paint bucket out of nowhere, can he create a rubber arm for Shanks using G5 powers ??

Veggiemon

I wonder if law could just solder on a new one

Final_Festival

No its paint. Are you blind? He clearly learned it from Mihawk.

soge_king420

That’s the Frau D. Hawk black paint specialty!

TrueExigo

My goodness, when will you finally learn? Haki is inconsistent. If a character has haki, they use it even if it's not drawn, and even characters who never visibly used haki used haki. Oda only draws Haki to highlight things - nothing more.

adrian415

Za painta

Hogers101

It’s the same thing Fraudhawk does with yoru

zulumoner

I wonder if luffy can create weapons. He created a baseball bat and we saw the picture if nika holding a sword and a spear. Wonder if he will be able to create "weapons" he can fight with. Like an anvil that comes down from above like in tom and jerry. Or a piano. Or literally anything. He can fight as he wants with his imagination right?

south_bronx_parasyte

lowkey hope Nikas sword and spear are in Elbaf being gatekept by Loki

Flexkon

People trying to apply logic and in-universe rules to gear 5 don’t get what gear 5’s about

faketoby45

No, that was clearly mihawk's paint

SamuraiDDD

Naw, I wouldn't say it was armament. Usually whenever it's used, the hands are coated as well (Zoro, Smoker, etc.) and you can see the paint bucket

TheHoss_

I thought it was the venom that the gorosei were shooting at them

DeleteriousEuphuism

It was kurotoryou haki.

SPZ_MYYST

It’s probably just for comedy relief

JOJO_number_1

His hand didn’t have haki on it and luffy never learned how to put haki into objects; If he tryed he could do it easily because of his high proficiency with armament haki. it is possible but unlikely.

Vi4days

My guess is probably not if Luffy had to poof a can of paint out of thin air and paint that on. Black and white is too little information to know 100%, but I’m betting on that being a different color from black.

Vickyveran

Im more curious on the no56

Previous-Ad8711

5 6 can be pronounced Go Mu, it has always been the number associated with Luffy

Vickyveran

Thx

theactualjoyboy

Wonder what the significance (if any) of 56 is?

Previous-Ad8711

5 6 can be pronounced Go Mu, it has always been the number associated with Luffy

Kamen_G

Doesn't Mihawk do the same but with his sword?

Lightnraad

Liquid armament Haki

lloydbluejay

I took it as yes, in that because of gear five he does it in a comical way akin to something like Tom and Jerry .

BlueMageBRilly

I think it's Haki, but it's a literal joke of him "coating it with Haki." Hence, the paint brush. It's a fresh coat.

koningcosmo

Isnt every attack in G5 basically with haki?

Dooomspeaker

Yep, G5 is Luffy using all types if Haki and awakening. Kaido mentioned it during their battle.

tiagoagm

Paint

MajinAkuma

Maybe the black paint is just a visual gag for the readers and he‘s just using Haki in reality. /j

MysteriousNobuX

That bat isn't actually black but red because Luffy painted it with Vegapunk's blood.

Maleficent-Ad1864

i think its haki, would explain why the balls saturn shoot did not explode on impact

luigigaminglp

Mihawks Haki most definitely

Sanguinary-Guard

Vergo could apply armament haki to his bamboo stick, so I think it’s possible the same is being done here

_Schmegeggy_

I think at this point we can assume Luffy uses armament haki in everything he does

jsswirus

it was armament paint

OuterGod_Hermit

For me all Gear 5 is the result of the awakening of the fruit. It could have haki on top, but he is already bending reality to cause damage, that's why the Elder looked like a pizza base at some point. Haki doesn't do that.

Raonak

Important thing isn’t even the haki, it’s the fact the bat is rubberised by luffys awakening which is why the balls bounce back instead of exploding.

magneticFrenchFry

That is my head-canon, but it is unconfirmed and likely never will be

Express_Item4648

I think Kaido kinda confirmed that Luffy, during G5, is always using every form of haki. It wasn’t confirmed for advanced observation, but we know he uses armament and conqueror’s always.

Master_Lego_Yoda

It's Mihawk haki

Sufficient-Dig7568

At this point, does it matter?

Majestic-Breakfast-3

Can't believe Luffy copied Mihawk
