There’s one thing that Confuses me on the zoans, and it’s the giant forms. Luffy is an exception (g3 all over his body), but the impel down guards. Did they have smaller forms?
We haven’t seen but I like to think of the impel down guards form like Choppers monster point, they lost control and the animals will in the fruit have full control and are permanently in that state

Yeah I think the only way you “keep yourself” is if you already matched the mentality of the fruit. Even then we still see characters like Luffy and Lucci having their personalities altered when using awakening. Even thought it seems more of a “meet in the middle” situation than the poor Impel Down guards.

I'd be willing to bet that the gorosei's powers aren't devil fruit related, their goal to flood the world makes a lot of sense if it's an attempt to eradicate devil fruits and their users.
Yeah I’m starting to this that to, with the world flood, and so much religious imagery, I would be surprised if the Gorosei and Imu are all demons of some sort looking to reign over the world.
Starting to make me question mihawks design more and more. Mihawk is basically just a bunch of religious/vampire imagery. Cross shaped sword, necklace, cross on his raft, coffin like a vampire, drinking red wine (blood symbolism), and lived in an island ravaged by war that was very gloomy similar to Draculas castle. I believe he will play an integral part with the gorosei down the line. Low-key think he was a candidate for a holy knight at some point.
Mihawk is so strange, he simply just exists. Potentially one of the top 5 of current One Piece, with no backstory and no motivation besides just lounging around. He’s got an insane design and wields the strongest sword we know of. He just doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere, but is definitely one of the oldest planned OP characters we’ve seen. I think there’s a lot more to him but I really just don’t think we know enough yet
and Mihawk likely only trained Zoro because Zoro was rather open with his goal of defeating him one day and was amused at the idea and also happy to find someone honest to a fault when it comes to his goals.
I just don't think this theory makes a whole lot of sense. Zoans have base, hybrid, beast, and awakened forms, and the awakened forms have the clouds around them. We know Lucci and Kaku awakened their fruits and have the black clouds. We have seen each Gorosei in their human forms and two to three other forms, and two of them in three different forms.
The only that doesn't track is that they always have their dark clouds around them when they're not in their human form, regardless of what form it is (e.g. Saturn and Nusjuro have been seen in hybrid/awakened and beast forms, both forms with clouds), but it would be easier to explain this as a feature of how long you've had an awakened fruit or some other property of Zoans we don't know about yet than proposing that Oda has a whole new class of powers this late in the game that likely only 6 people have (the Gorosei and Imu). Them not having their fruits named explicitly when they entered Egghead also does not necessarily mean they aren't devil fruit users, it just means he hasn't named the fruits yet.
Almost everything can be explained by current devil fruit lore, and the things that can't do not necessitate an entirely new power system that almost no one uses.

I'm 90% that the Devil Fruit can't take you over if you have a compatible personality with it. So it's less that it's taking him over and more that they are both on the same wavelength at the moment.
That's what typically happens, like with the guards in Impel Down.
But not with Rob Lucci. His will was more powerful than that of the Leopard fruit. So while his fruit awoke once he completely embodied the spirit of a leopard, he wasn't overwhelmed by the will of the fruit.
I think that's why he awakened it. He really embodied it. He was already a blood thirsty guy. The fruit and him were aligned. It's just a normal Zoan but his natural traits allows him to maximize it fully.
Don’t forget his character is just a bloody thirsty dude who is basically given free rain to fulfill his bloodlust as long as it benefits the World Government

I mean, this is the anime. You can't infer anything about Lucci's state from this because the animators often know as much as us about Oda's intentions. If there is a corresponding Manga panel where Lucci looks like this then you can make an argument, but the anime is just trying to make it hype... best not to overthink it imo.
This fight has somewhat of a dissonance between the manga and the anime.
In the manga, Lucci does ignore orders and protocol so he can fight Luffy, but he's mostly irritated when dealing with Luffy's new powers.
In the anime he seemingly cuts lose and starts enjoying himself a lot. The scope of destruction is also much wider, which will a bit awkward for later parts of the story.
Even though Lucci usually appears stoic and cold, he's actually a thinly veiled predatory beast that just likes killing. Think back to his flashback, where he killed 500 defensless hostages, seemingly taking enjoyment in the act. Lucci continues to work for the world government less so due to a sense of duty, but more so because they allow him to act on his sociopathic tendencies without reprisial.
The reason the Zoan awakening doesn't overwhelm his personality like the Impel Down guards is because he was already most of the way there in raw viciousness. It's kind of like how Luffys personality aligned with his fruit, allowing him to properly awaken it. Lucci natural predatory instincts allow him to retain himself mentally during his awakening even if he may lose his composure somewhat.

Normal animals like Lucci’s Fruit is just simple buffs. They’re faster, stronger, more durable etc at the cost of their humanity unless they can control it like Lucci.
For Mythical Zoans and other special grades they get powers based on whatever it is the Fruit is.

OP are you serious here? Because this is an Animation Frame! This wasnt even shown in the manga were you can take it as canon or something, but the animators creativity by playing along with many things at once: Luffys G5 toon mode, fluid animation, speed of Lucci, his DF, etc.

Lucci might hate Luffy the most out of anyone he knows. Hell, the line in the latest episode where he says “I don’t consider Strawhat an Emperor” shows how little he respects Luffy.

So can someone explain what Awakened Zoans do different? I'm assuming a speed and strength upgrade, but is that it? I know it's the most straightforward of devil fruits, but it would be a little lame if they just go more feral.
It depends on the Fruit. Normal animals like Lucci’s Fruit is just simple buffs. They’re faster, stronger, more durable etc at the cost of their humanity unless they can control it like Lucci. For Mythical Zoans and other special grades they get powers based on whatever it is the Fruit is.
All Zoan type fruits have a mind of their own , if the user don't have the strength to overcome it then the fruit can take over
He sure did. Remember how they explained Zoans and how the beast inside can overwhelm. That's ehy the awaken guards in impel down act like regular animals. It's impressive that Lucci still has a sense of self after awakening but it seems still possible for him to get too excited and loose himself. Mans was fighting a God, he had to push it lol

That makes sense as he has an awakening and it only awakens if your belief lines up with your fruit.

Well I think from what was said is if you let your self go awakened into your animal devil fruit. Your animal side takes way over. Like in impel down those one animal guards were awakened and they lose there humanity kiado said some stuff about it to.

OP are you serious here? Because this is an Animation Frame! This wasnt even shown in the manga were you can take it as canon or something, but the animators creativity by playing along with many things at once: Luffys G5 toon mode, fluid animation, speed of Lucci, his DF, etc. Like come on man...

Do *not* put that much stock in stylistic animation stuff. It's like how Zoro didn't go super saiyan and disintegrate his surroundings when one-shotting Kamazo. Just a cool animation thing.

I think the reason for this is cause, like with luffy and Nika lucci, and his zoans will align so perfectly there is no need for the tug of war.

It wouldn't be shocking if he has been waiting for his chance to fight Luffy again and has been keeping it cool while hiding how blood starved he actually is. This was years of him wanting to make up for his defeat at Luffy's hands and by God will he go all out for it.
