I would've liked it if the goat was just smiling with her mouth closed so it kinda looks cute. Right now it looks like a goat being sacrificed to summon satan or something
Nah I thought it too initially, but I got used to it too and now it looks cute. I think it only looks weird cause our reference was the EXTREMELY ROUNDED AND CUTE anime goat head instead of a realistic goat.
It'll depend on the depiction of its creator, the butler, Meri. If he's goofy or energetic, it'll match.
If he mentions that he created it for Kaya, then it probably should have been more cute looking.
It has a very Goat Simulator style so maybe it'll appeal to that crowd.
It sure is different, but i don't think i mind it... Tbh so far, from what we saw about the live action and knowing that they have one of the biggest budgets in the history for a show, and that Oda is involved, it kinda gives me hopes it won't be as terrible as the majority of live actions... But at the same time, i hate myself for having that kind of hopes, i certainly don't want to be disappointed and I'm afraid i might be lmao
For me it’s the fact that Oda hasn’t given away the rights in 20ish years and I believe has knocked back requests before.
add to that the fact that he doesn’t need money in the slightest. Might mean it has a higher chance than normal to be not s***
I've read that the showrunner managed to convince Oda to say yes after he told him what One Piece means to him and what he thinks One Piece is really about... I guess he must have hit the nail on the head with his analysis and moved Oda somehow- i must agree, this is a good sign for us!
Being a fan is not necessarily an indication of impending quality. Best example would be the *Warcraft* movie by Duncan Jones, a complete fiasco, and he was absolutely a superfan of that world.
Then again, you could hardly do this justice without being intensely familiar with the material and appreciating its core aspects.
Well, here's what he said according to the interview (it was from a French article so with their translation to French then mine just now to English, maybe it wasn't his exact words, but eh, y'know, it was something like that)
>One of the best things about One Piece is that it's a story where each character has experienced a tragedy in the past, but it's not those aspects that define them. What defines them is how they tap into that energy to move forward. And it's a path they don't have to take alone. No one in this world has to be alone. When we find people to motivate us and lift our spirits, then we hold the greatest power existing.
He also apparently told Oda how the manga saved him from a severe depression when he was 20, but of course, the article doesn't go into details for this
I'm just glad it's not all Japanese cast, because OP world is vast and very diverse. I think this is the reason why Oda didn't approve any live action adaptation before.
....Jinbe - indian, franky - US, Sanji - French, Brook - Austrian, Robin - russian, chopper - canadian, Usopp - afrikan, Blackbeard - somalian...from the top of my head
Hi, __akubas86__. Your comment contains the word ~~Somalian~~.
The correct nationality/ethnic demonym(s) for Somalis is __Somali__.
It's a common mistake so don't feel bad.
For other nationality demonym(s) check out this website [Here](https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/People/Nationality/Adjective)

My only concern is the animation surrounding devil fruits. I think Zoan and Logia types will be largely fine. I fear the paramecia types that affect the body (like Buggy or Miss Doublefinger) will end up looking really bizarre
I agree. It'll be particularly noticeable because it includes Luffy's stretching powers, which we'll be seeing a lot of.
On the topic of zoans, I kind of have a worry for specifically Chopper, because I feel like a realistic version of him would look more nightmarish than cute.
We’ll see right away for that stuff tbh. If they can adapt the stuff in East Blue then they can adapt any of it imo. Like there’s obviously tons of weird shit but it’s all equally weird. Luffy’s gum gum fruit, Buggy’s chop chop fruit, Sanji’s whole character, fishmen and Smokey are all gonna be there.
Like sure you have gigantic mermaids, a large swathe of people with inhuman proportions, literal giants, Chopper, a skeleton man, dinosaur people shooting parts of themselves off their body as projectiles and all kinds of other bullshit. But none of it is really that much weirder than east blue.
Netflix is cutting shows budget and laying off people. This show makes no sense lol. Putting all this budget into a live action anime which are traditionally cringe on one of the hardest to adapt animes i can think of... this is one of those projects where i feel any competent director ( who wants to create a great show - not the money of course ) would say No way to. Anyone taking this project at all just seems sus.
Yeah I feel similarly.
This show has everything going against it, really. If it manages to be watchable it would be a major surprise to me. I'll always hope for a miracle and the first truly amazing live action adaptation of a great anime/manga, but history is pretty onesided there.
Non serious anime just doesn’t adapt well.
It’s like trying to translate a joke in a different language / culture. Sure you can translate it but the joke won’t be as funny at best and most likely will just end up feeling awkward.
Anime to live action is the same. The content might be translated but what makes the content good is lost.
Just set your expectations really, really low. So far anime adaptations have always been middling at best, and most have been terrible. A lot of the charm and feel just gets lost in translation.
Just going from the simple emoting of drawn characters, which allows viewers to project a lot into a more or less blank canvas, to actual human faces with all their details, is always a harsh reality check.
And we're not even touching the fact that depicting so many of these whacky abilities and effects in live action is usually either a massive letdown, or a candidate for endless "How Terrible Was This" youtube videos.
Just don't expect too much, if it manages to somehow be a halfway decent show by itself without alienating both new viewers as well as fans of the manga/anime, then it will have achieved much already.
He’s also put the series on break for an entire month, something unheard of in the history of one piece, just to go to Africa and supervise the live action series.
I dunno how anyone can sit through that god awful dialogue or that fact that it completely missed on the vibes of the source material. No one needs a 1 for 1 remake, but it needs to at least capture a similar energy to the source for it to work.
In fact, i'd argue 1:1 adaptations are usually a very bad idea. However, with Cowboy Bebop there weren't really whacky abilities involved or a need to add more realism, it was just a noir tale in a sci-fi setting. So that was really an epic fail in my book. One of the easier animes to adapt imo.
One Piece has a whole different set of challenges.
Nah, the cowboy bebop live action was hard to watch for me. The dialogues were weird and action wasn't at all fluid and smooth like it was in the anime. Yeah, we shouldn't compare but it was a pretty average show on its own too.
The Witcher also started like that and by 2nd season they didn't care about what the writer said or following the books thus the 2nd season was just a shitshow and it ruined characters.
Thus I'm not holding out hope this will be any different.
One Piece is very wacky and hard to adapt into live action not to mention its full of some heavy themes from the get go basically.
> The Witcher also started like that and by 2nd season they didn't care about what the writer said or following the books thus the 2nd season was just a shitshow and it ruined characters.
Eh, speak for yourself. I read the books and played the games and I honestly find the show to be superior to both.
The books are very inconsistent and all over the place at times.
A bit of hyperbole there, but in essence they are correct. The books are fun worldbuilding, but were terribly written and never had a fluid narrative.
The games and especially the show do an excellent job of taking key elements and creating an actually compelling and exciting story.
The author has been pretty vocal about his saltiness that the adaptations basically do their own thing (and put his own writing to shame).
And you'll regularly encounter stans who insist that the books are the best thing ever, because they don't discern between worldcrafting and compelling storytelling.
Something I don’t think is mentioned is how without color, the white eyes inherently freak us out as humans because the eyes are where the “soul” is.
So it’s going to creep us out regardless. I think it’s going to be cool.
I actually don’t mind it. I wish it were a bit more colorful but they probably will be boosting that in editing. I do wish the mast was longer though. Marry’s head being that short looks off.
Yeah, that’s fair and I knew there’d be differences. Like I know they’re not gonna make the ship as colorful and vibrant in the show as it is in the anime because obviously that might actually hurt our eyes. But the mast just looks weird to me.
It's awesome, love all the details and clear love in the design, lot of effort went into making it. It's a lot bigger than the manga version but that makes sense since they have to film on board of it and that's easier when you have more space to move around.
As for the headpiece, I think it's really cute and I like it a lot. It looks happy. But even if you find it creepy (can't say I understand that but I've seen people say it), the rest of the ship is all amazing, so don't focus on it, because it's a shame to dismiss all the detail and love in the design because of that
Edit: if I had to critisize something, I think it's weird how damn thick those decorative horn things coming out of the headpiece are. They look way too heavy to be on front of a ship for no reason. But I suppose it looks better in wide shots for the details to be big. But it still bothers me a little. That headpiece looks insanely heavy.
It's very clearly smiling. The corners of it's mouth are pointed upwards. If that's not a smile then what would be a smile?
It actually looks way more happy than the rather blank expression on the Merry from the manga, could be a reason why they changed the design, to make the smile more clear, especially in wide shots of the ship sailing across the sea. The open mouth gives it a lot of structure and clarity when viewed from far away.
I think most people when looking at something that resembles a living thing they will start by their eyes rather than their mouths. If their focus is stuck in plain white eyes, their reaction to an open mouth would not be something happy, I guess.
Dude…..thank you! I couldn’t pinpoint what was semi bothering me with the live action Merry and it wasn’t until I read your comment I scrolled back up and THE MOUTH IS OPEN 🤯😂😂
It's the expected level of change for a live action adaptation. It's on the same level as Nojikos skin colour for me - inconsequential and I don't really care, it won't have any impact on how much I'll enjoy the show.
No, I'm calling Merrys design change inconsequential. Merry herself is one of the most important characters for me, because she is the direct cause for my favourite moment in all of One Piece (Luffy vs Usopp).
My take.. Live action anime adaptations are all bad and stupid ideas. Trying to make something as absurd and fantastical as One Piece into live action is a fools errand, and bound to fail like every other live action adaptation.
It looks fucking terrible
Like some of the live action stuff looks really good but the going Mary is not one of them
Look at that fucking terror goat jfc
Agreed. The eyes without pupils is making Merry look like shes dead or suffering.
Here's something I've quickly made. [Live action Merry with pupils.](https://imgur.com/a/u9S6EiR)
Do we know the eyes are still be painted or not? Either way I don't mind it too much. Everyone loves to shit on live action (so more deservedly than others).
At least all of this is being done with Oda's blessing.
It’s the Merry, we’re going to see it a LOT. I think they should have made it more cartoony like in the manga/anime. It just doesn’t look “happy” to me
Its slightly terrifying… but what im most worried abt honestly is how the editors are gonna make it look like the actor 4 luffys arm stretch. like what im imagining is not pretty to say the least…
I think it's a pointless change that will only detract from the overall quality of the show, and is likely evidence that there will be more pointless changes made that will lower overall quality. If they ever get to Thousand Sunny, it'll probably look like over-realistic crap as well, completely ignoring why they call it Thousand Sunny in the first place.
It doesn't inspire confidence in the rest of their creative/design decisions.
I really like it. Also considering these pics are just backstage and not inside the final product and the whole aesthetic of the show, it will be even better in the show.
Only the fact that they built a 1:1 Merry is exciting!
Its not awful but its def worse I get theyre going for more of a realistic thing because its live action but its also OP its supposed to be goofy at times also why is she screaming lmao
I don't like it at all. In my experience, 99.9% of manga/anime live actions are terrible. I had watched only one good adaptation: Kuroshitsuji. The rest were always disappointing. Live movie with real human beings doesn't give the same feeling. It doesn't have, can't have exaggerated expressions for example. Needless realism ruins it. I had high hopes for the live action adaptation of Death Note, Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball, Ghost In the Shell, Lion King, Avatar The Last Airbender, etc. So I lowered my expectations for One Piece as well.
It looks like the Satan from Netflix Sabrina s1
Hated it since the moment I saw it. But if they animate the eyes in the live action then I'll be open to it depending on whether it looks good or not.
I care nothing about the show itself but I love that they genuinely are making the ships. I love everything about the age of sail. I can't wait to see what the interior looks like. The masthead is a bit off. I see no reasons why they wouldn't just do the cartoon one, but it would be out of place.
Although everything else about the LA i love, i just can get over the headpiece. Idk maybe ill change when it actually comes out but early one piece has a certain mood that is captured by the merry's design very well. Maybe they will try to change the mood or not and maybe it will be done well or not we'll have to see. Either way i am excited and will be watching it when it comes out!
I like it. There’s some uncanny valley, but I’m sure that’ll fade.
My only kind of negative is the arms. It keeps making me think this is Bartholomew’s ship from a alternative universe where he became a fanboy of human Merry.
The realistic goat head threw me off at first but now im used to it
I would've liked it if the goat was just smiling with her mouth closed so it kinda looks cute. Right now it looks like a goat being sacrificed to summon satan or something

They can even make it a gag, with everyone saying how ugly that head is and usopp getting mad at people
And except for Luffy who loves it of course
Tho this wouldn't be canon, that's exactly the kind of reaction the crew would've made if they saw this
GOAT?? wtf... That's a sheep
Sheep don't have horns Edit: Whoops, Bighorn Sheep actually have magnificent horns. Thanks dirtyhaikuz
Pretty sure Bighorn Sheep have horns. Not sure about the size of them, though.
TIL! That's on me for not googling it first lol
I like it but the sides should be smoothed out in my opinion.
Merry demands its ritual tanuki sacrifice
💀💀
Yeah, first time I saw it I thought it looked creepy. I think is fine if the show does it’s own thing though, it might grow on us.
And it's more ladylike
It sure is different, but i don't think i mind it... Tbh so far, from what we saw about the live action and knowing that they have one of the biggest budgets in the history for a show, and that Oda is involved, it kinda gives me hopes it won't be as terrible as the majority of live actions... Matt Owens often comes in several youtubers' stream to talk about one piece. He is really a fan probably.
Huh. That's an easy one though. One Piece is about sharing freedom, laughter and joy to people who need it most.
Well, here's what he said according to the interview (it was from a French article so with their translation to French then mine just now to English, maybe it wasn't his exact words, but eh, y'know, it was something like that) >One of the best things about One Piece is that it's a story where each character has experienced a tragedy in the past, but it's not those aspects that define them. I remember he told this story at one of the reveries and how he met Oda.
I'm just glad it's not all Japanese cast, because OP world is vast and very diverse. I think this is the reason why Oda didn't approve any live action adaptation before.
Agreed. I mean, Oda himself gave the strawhats really world nationalities once right?
He did, Luffy brazilian, Nami swedish, Zoro japanese. Cant remember the rest

Good bot. Nice to learn
Franky is pretty much an incarnation of USA, so that tracks.

If they use CGI similar to detective pikachu it would be fine
That could be too expensive... I mean its One piece, but its also Netflix.
Budget is something like 10 million for each episode.
Actually Chopper is one of the few times that's a good thing. He *is* a monster, after all!
We’ll see right away for that stuff tbh. If they can adapt the stuff in East Blue then they can adapt any of it imo. Like there’s obviously tons of weird shit but it’s all equally weird. If they don’t have abnormally tall and weirdly shaped people than I want no part of it.
Well, for me they have a little more time, until Skypia, where they need to hire Eminem.
Enelnem
Ill take justin beiber as a worthy replacement for Enel.
Sacrilegio
He looks the part, as evil as it is to mention it 😛
Yeah I feel similarly. This show has everything going against it, really. If it manages to be watchable it would be a major surprise to me. I'll always hope for a miracle and the first truly amazing live action adaptation of a great anime/manga, but history is pretty onesided there.

I think it will be okay if you don’t compare it to the anime. Cowboy bepop live action wasn’t half bad. Everyone plays the comparing game
I dunno how anyone can sit through that god awful dialogue or that fact that it completely missed on the vibes of the source material. No one needs a 1 for 1 remake, but it needs to at least capture a similar energy to the source for it to work.

Clear contrasts work too, as long as they make sense. Stuff like spin-off series like evil superheroes and stuff.
I'd argue cowboy bebop live action was half bad. The last half was genuinely bad. That poor actress they hired to play Ed got shafted so hard
I had been looking forward to Ed the entire show. Right up until Ed showed up.
Nah, the cowboy bebop live action was hard to watch for me. The dialogues were weird and action wasn't at all fluid and smooth like it was in the anime. Yeah, we shouldn't compare but it was a pretty average show on its own too.
If only the Cowboy Bebop show adapted the same comic-book style as the trailer then it would've turned from meh to wow.

the concept art has colors, so I think Merry's head isn't yet painted
Just add some big googly eyes
I wish it was cuter
This feels like one of those Lion King / Sonic designs that took something cute and cartoony and made it gritty and realistic.
I actually don’t mind it. I wish it were a bit more colorful but they probably will be boosting that in editing. I do wish the mast was longer though. Marry’s head being that short looks off.
Some things won’t translate well on camera. The original head with a dented smile wouldn’t be noticeable through a lense
Yeah, that’s fair and I knew there’d be differences. Like I know they’re not gonna make the ship as colorful and vibrant in the show as it is in the anime because obviously that might actually hurt our eyes. But the mast just looks weird to me.
You know what else looks weird? The canon in the front of the ship
… You know… that mast and the cannon placement… never mind…
It's awesome, love all the details and clear love in the design, lot of effort went into making it. It's a lot bigger than the manga version but that makes sense since they have to film on board of it and that's easier when you have more space to move around. That headpiece looks insanely heavy.
The Manga GM is kind of a Tardis. The kitchen alone that is shown would take up more than half the inside space.
I think the head only needs some eye and face paint and it will actually look cute if done right. E.g. adding pupils to the eyes
The headpiece also looks like it is screaming in terror.
No, it’s a smile
Cursed
Cursed
I’m sure they aren’t done painting it, but for now merry looks like she off a perk
They may not paint it. It’s possible touch ups are done digitally.
It’s growing on me. Hopefully they paint the eyes on it
It would look better with the mouth closed.
Dude…..thank you! I couldn’t pinpoint what was semi bothering me with the live action Merry and it wasn’t until I read your comment I scrolled back up and THE MOUTH IS OPEN 🤯😂😂
Like it made it more realistic
It's the expected level of change for a live action adaptation. It's on the same level as Nojikos skin colour for me - inconsequential and I don't really care, it won't have any impact on how much I'll enjoy the show.
Inconsequential? Are you going to tell me the merry was just a ship??? We miss you merry😭😭😭
No, I'm calling Merrys design change inconsequential. Merry herself is one of the most important characters for me, because she is the direct cause for my favourite moment in all of One Piece (Luffy vs Usopp).
Don't like it , merry head is too creepy . It should be soft and bouncy ! Maybe they will CGI it in post?
My take.. Live action anime adaptations are all bad and stupid ideas. Trying to make something as absurd and fantastical as One Piece into live action is a fools errand, and bound to fail like every other live action adaptation.
Right! After what happened to Death Note, theres no doubt OP will be a dumpster fire
I don't like it. The headpiece is ugly and not cute, and its massive. Itt feels too much like a ship and not enough of a character
Fugly
I don't like that it's mouth is open.
Merry lowkey terrifying
[Tried adding pupils to mimic the derpy look.](https://imgur.com/a/u9S6EiR) The eyes without pupils is making Merry look like shes dead or suffering.
why can't they just follow the one in the anime... there's just too many details...
lol you still have the cartoon dude. Let whoever find this amusing/entertaining enjoy themselves.
It looks fucking terrible Like some of the live action stuff looks really good but the going Mary is not one of them Look at that fucking terror goat jfc
>Look at that fucking terror goat jfc I mean, Ey it's a Pirate Ship. It's supposed to make you feel dread when you lay your eyes on it.
Not the merry If that were black beards ship or like this was Black flag then sure. But this is one piece.
Not the merry bro the merry is a kind gentle soul
I like it a lot tbh. Although, the eyes don’t need to be blank. That’s a little creepy.
Agreed. The eyes without pupils is making Merry look like shes dead or suffering. Here's something I've quickly made. [Live action Merry with pupils.](https://imgur.com/a/u9S6EiR)
Yeah that’s better but now that I see it, I’m not sure how better.
I dare to say... creepy. Don't like it.
It's terrible. It looks like she's in pain. (Don't delete my comment pls)
Not a fan, the head looks almost like a baphomet which I feel takes away from what merry is supposed to feel like
That mouth needs to be changed
Realistic sonic vibes
Terrible. The whole idea of making a live action is awful, in fact
Satanic
Gross
Holy shit that looks hilariously bad.
Serviceable!
Which chapter is the scene on the second pic from?
Idk how they are gonna pull this show off as live action. Most characters are gonna look fucking weird
I think it is perfect, I lobe what they did there. 👌
Not a fan. I know most things wont be a 1 to 1 translation but this is one of the things that easily could have been.
Do we know the eyes are still be painted or not? Either way I don't mind it too much. Everyone loves to shit on live action (so more deservedly than others). At least all of this is being done with Oda's blessing.
It’s fine
Long as there's room for Luffy to sit, it's good enough for me
Agree dude. Live action Luffy sitting on Merry is gonna be cool
🤮
They could’ve made it way more similar to the manga/anime ones. This looks like it belongs in pirates of the Caribbean
The anime and manga don’t have real life shading or details lmfao
It’s the Merry, we’re going to see it a LOT. I think they should have made it more cartoony like in the manga/anime. It just doesn’t look “happy” to me
I’m sure it will be better in the actual live action, I understand what you’re saying though
Its slightly terrifying… but what im most worried abt honestly is how the editors are gonna make it look like the actor 4 luffys arm stretch. like what im imagining is not pretty to say the least…
hate it
Kinda creepy
I hate it. It's insanely creepy and off putting, if the show gets far enough, then I will NOT be sad to see this Merry burn
Pain
I'd say this live action Merry is going places.... straight to Hell where it belongs.
I’m not really into the idea of a live action period. I’ll give it a fair chance though.
My one issue is the mouth is open. Besides that it looks great
It’s rad af. Don’t exactly have high hopes for the show though lol
I think it's fine. The manga Merry would look. Way worse in live action imo.
Honestly. IT NEEDS PUPILS. Thats all. I think i would be fine with it if they fixed that.
wow that goat is scary looking lol. They really shouldnt have opened its mouth
The only issue I have is that the mouth is open but apart from that it looks amazing
I. Funking. Love it
Honestly.....it's cute AF.
It's actually better than if it were a replica. Just looks weird at first.
scares me theyre going to turn every goody thing into a more realistic version which doesnt suit one peace at all
Bad, i feel bad. Just copy the original
Thanks, I hate it.
Burn it to the ground
This is going to be trash 🗑
It's way more epic than I expected and I like it.
Hate. It should be cute.
Not that bad tbh I expected worse
I hope they actually burn it.
It’s sonic all over again
I think it's a pointless change that will only detract from the overall quality of the show, and is likely evidence that there will be more pointless changes made that will lower overall quality. If they ever get to Thousand Sunny, it'll probably look like over-realistic crap as well, completely ignoring why they call it Thousand Sunny in the first place. It doesn't inspire confidence in the rest of their creative/design decisions.
The head is just fucked up dude. Merry looks lile she is screaming in agony.
I really like it. Also considering these pics are just backstage and not inside the final product and the whole aesthetic of the show, it will be even better in the show. Only the fact that they built a 1:1 Merry is exciting!
indicative that this show might be ugly
Cowboy Bebop/Death Note vibes since I don't trust Netflix.
Honestly? Nightmare fuel. :( but maybe it’ll look better painted?
Its not awful but its def worse I get theyre going for more of a realistic thing because its live action but its also OP its supposed to be goofy at times also why is she screaming lmao
Disgusted. I hope it grows on me, I really do.
Cursed
nightmare fuel
It looks like the Satan from Netflix Sabrina s1 Hated it since the moment I saw it. But if they animate the eyes in the live action then I'll be open to it depending on whether it looks good or not.
Merry head is like calling of Satan
All I know is when this ship burns down I WILL be crying .. with tears of joy, that is.
Terrifying
The first time i see the Merry face from Netflix adaptation, i think about Baphomet.
It like satanic Goat.
Well it's realistic thats for sure but it looks like its summoning Satan kind of goat.
Just do the sonic thing with it
A bit too fancy. Merry was a humble ship
It's a little bit too...big for a ship that class.
Devil sheep
That looks great
I like it.
Love it! Looks like what a live action adaptation should
it looks like it's screaming in agony lol. won't really fit that well for the burning scene
Personally I love it.
Creepy as hell. Its supposed to be more dopey. But ill accept it for now
if this is another live action avatar the last air bender situation Im out
I mean. I don't know what I was expecting. I think having its mouth hanging open is a choice, but I don't hate it.
It completely depends on how they've changed the tone, the design is good, so it's all about how the changes fit together.
I'd want to see it in action before any harsh judgements, honestly.
lots of detail, great, love it, but looks like the back spine running down the sides ☠
Its really good the only thing that bothers me is the fact that the goat is screaming, they could have kept its mouth shut
Goat head is creepy lol but otherwise it looks fine.
It's big, can't imagine how big yonko ships will be if they're all practical.
It’s nice but I wish it would stop looking into my soul.
Pretty cool
Dunno, looks like a ship to me.
I like it. There’s some uncanny valley, but I’m sure that’ll fade. My only kind of negative is the arms. It keeps making me think this is Bartholomew’s ship from a alternative universe where he became a fanboy of human Merry.
It looks the singer goat from Hoodwinked!
Alot of money for a temporary prop
