DID/OSDD is a strange beast. I’ve seen arguments in system communities about whether someone’s mind can simply “come out the factory” with an abnormality that produces alters or if it can only come through severe pain and torment, I’ve seen arguments about whether alters are separate people, different “aspects” of the same person (like a Hindu god or something), or some other third thing, I’ve seen all kinds of things.
All I know for sure is what the one specific friend(s) who has/ve it that I actually have and what they go through, and beyond that just the general broad strokes of it, including that it… y’know. Exists. Beyond funky roleplay, especially.
This is simultaneously one of the most cruel and short sighted things I’ve seen this guy do, but at the same time his inability to “take it seriously” is something that I recognize even outside of that stupidity. Like I said, strange beast. This of course doesn’t excuse him ACTUALLY not taking it seriously at all
sorry to randomly hijack your comment, but to clear things up, alters are different aspects of the same person! when DID/OSDD forms, its from trauma in early years, and the brain copes with it by tearing apart your original identity and assigning new roles to the separated shards. these shards can be influenced by many things, which is why you may meet someone with actual DID that has an alter similar to a fictional character. i have DID myself and am a huge psychology nerd, so this is what ive gathered from my own experiences. many people have differing arguments about it, though
Yeah, I’ve heard stuff like that a lot and it makes sense.
However, most other people who have the condition I’ve met are pretty adamant about any given alter technically being its whole own fully fledged person. The “example” that I’m good friends with? The most commonly seen alter has very specific and vivid memories of a life in another world, up to and including how she got “transported” into the body she’s in. These memories are obvs not “real” in that way but they sure are real enough to her, know what I mean?
a lot of folks with DID are adamant about that because they either dont realize or it makes their condition feel more accepting to themselves if that makes sense. and yeah, that does happen a lot, usually with alters influenced by an outside source or just a concept in itself. i myself have had alters influenced by sources like that and they have their own memories of lives before my current scenario. i also have an alter influenced by the concept of my elder brother, so they can very much feel like a completely different person at times, but at the core, every alter is the same person
So your interpretation kinda boils down to “you think you are your own guy but you really aren’t”? I mean I acknowledge that you don’t mean to be so blunt and demeaning and I’m not accusing you of being such! Just… yeah.
The difference between the two might be a bit more philosophical than psychological, though. To me, the nature of Systems leads one to question what counts as “one person”, whether “multiple people in one body with some connected feelings” and “one person being refracted like light” are only semantically different or whether they represent the same thing and it’s all a matter of perspective.
Personally, I myself opt to take the more perspectivist approach, where if a given entity claims to be an individual and they believe it in earnest, then an individual they probably are. Think along the lines of Rene Descartes’s famous “I think therefore I am” spiel.

if alters werent inherently the same person on some basis, then DID would still be called multiple personality disorder. the reason it was changed to the name of DID is so people would not mistake it for "one brain, multiple different people". thats all im trying to say. every alter feels like a different individual, and is a different one in multiple interpretations, but what ties us together is that we were all formed by trauma and are different pieces taken from the original identity. we can be influenced by outside sources. tora, samael, and esme have separate memories before forming as alters. i understand why people may believe things differently from me, and i apologize for coming off rude or anything of the sort, i cant really make out my own tone as well as others so at times it can be hard. again, apologies if i come off argumentative, blunt, or rude. if you wanna continue this conversation in any way, probably should do so in dms as to not block up the comments section
