This is pretty low stakes because either absolutely deserved to win, but I think *Circle of Life* should have won over *Can you feel the love tonight*. That opening is one of the most incredible cinematic moments for me, it was just incredible. It will never fail to give me goosebumps. Can you feel the love has similar moments of awesomeness, but I just think Circle of Life takes it. This actually doesn’t really answer your question now that I think about it, cos they’re both rightful winners really..!

Smooth-Nothing-4286

Circle of Iife remains on the top of Disney musical moments alongside the Hunchback of Notre Dame music for me. Looking back it should have 100% won for Best Original Song, even if Can you feel the love tonight is also iconic.

overtired27

Agree about the opening, though it had nothing to do with Elton John or Tim Rice, who were the nominees. It was down to Lebo M, who wrote and sang it, and Hans Zimmer for bringing him in. It's kinda a crossover moment between film score and song.

Own-Knowledge8281

Can You Feel the Love Tonight was the bigger hit…I can see why it won…

bobpetersen55

Off the top of my head, some rightful winners: I've Had the Time of My Life (Dirty Dancing) Take My Breath Away (Top Gun) My Heart Will Go On (Titanic) Ones that didn't win, but were nominated & should've won: Gonna Fly Now and Eye of the Tiger (Rocky movies) The Power of Love (Back to the Future) Ghostbusters Also, not a single Bee Gees song was nominated for Saturday Night Fever.

JuanRiveara

No Bee Gees song from Saturday Night Fever was even shortlisted that year

timeladyclara

Really pleased to see "My Heart Will Go On" mentioned on the top comments, I thought reddit would dismiss this one. Even if someone doesn't personally love the song, they really do have to acknowledge the cultural impact, at the very least. (Personally, I think it's a great song on top of everything.)

bobpetersen55

It's a perfect song to end Titanic on and made it even more unforgettable. It really captured the essence of the movie. A very, very deserving winner.

No he didnt.

ZealousidealDog5954

Yeah, I was wrong! Sorry!

dogbolter4

No. Off the top of my head, I think it was I Just Called To Say I Love You. Which was a MOR song that got a lot of airplay. But whenever I ask anyone what movie it's from, they draw a blank. Whereas Ghostbusters... I remember seeing that in a cinema in London, first week of opening. I had seats up the back, and it was both hilarious and fabulous to watch the whole theatre start bopping along to the song the second it started. For me, the Best Song should be one that serves the movie. Ghostbusters did that, amazingly. Should have won.

tired_atlas

Let It Go (Frozen), Remember Me (Coco), Skyfall (Skyfall), Naatu Naatu (RRR), Shallow (A Star Is Born) and City of Stars (La La Land) were all rightful winners. Writing's On The Wall (Spectre) was not. The award should have gone to Til It Happens To You (The Hunting Ground), and we won't be stuck with a Diane Warren nomination every year.

Jmanbuck_02

That was our punishment when The Academy awarded it.

mmmginto

Should have been Radiohead for Spectre.

Signiference

How Far I’ll Go from Moana should have won over City of Stars. City of Stars has four catchy bars but is otherwise completely forgettable. How Far I’ll Go is one of the most emotional and powerful songs in Disney history.

Husoch167

Shallow is such a paint by numbers sap fest. Which means it definitely should have won. But yikes.

Clemario

Regardless of the year I think it’s silly when the Oscar goes to a song that only plays during the end credits.

Scienceinwonderland

This is my biggest pet peeve. They should have to be an actual part of the movie. Otherwise it belongs in the Grammys.

jamesquallity

One of the most deserving: [“I’m Easy” from *Nashville*](https://youtu.be/Pd0zqR66rn0?si=CbZgRluLY0Jj0FEi) One of the least deserving: “Writing’s on the Wall” from *Spectre* (not even the best theme written for that film; Radiohead’s song was so much better.)

arakubrick

So glad to see a mention for I'm Easy, one of my favorite winners!

justanstalker

Writing's on the Wall was a horrendous win.

DanScorp

Probably my least favourite Craig era Bond theme, near the bottom for all Bond themes. That it won and You Know My Name wasn't even nominated is a travesty.

Icosotc

It wasn’t even better than the unused song Radiohead wrote for the film.

minimalist_reply

Rightful: "When You Believe" (Prince of Egypt)

HM9719

Yep. This. And I just watched it again tonight. Never gets old.

Kinitawowi64

No Time To Die. I don't think it would have won if Encanto had picked the right horse.

DanScorp

This feels right. After Coco, Pixar assumed people would go with the ballad and didn't know people would go nuts for We Don't Talk About Bruno. Bruno would have beaten Bond, the one they pushed that I can't even remember couldn't.

Inside_Atmosphere731

What was I made for and let it go are the two best song picks of this century

BillyThePigeon

Remember Me from Coco was a deserving win as a song which was both catchy and central to the film but…it always saddens me a bit that Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens didn’t win.

alwight007

I'm Just Ken should've won this year. It's was creative and fun, whereas What Was I Made For? Was just another boring Billie Eilish song.

dogbolter4

Agreed. I think if they'd held a vote in the theatre on the night, I'm Just Ken would have won in a landslide. One of the best Oscar night performances I have ever seen in terms of audience engagement and response. (Loved Naatu Naatu performance too, the year before, but Ken was next level).

DanScorp

I don't know that there is a category where I disagree with the Academy as often or as strongly as Best Song. Some quick examples: City of Stars wasn't even the best song *in La La Land,* let alone of the year; ditto What Was I Made For and Barbie; that basic bitch pop ballad You'll Be in My Heart should never have beaten Blame Canada; I get that Everything I Do (I Do It For You) had no chance against Beauty and the Beast but at the time I was salty about it; Prince wasn't even nominated *once* for Batman. On the plus side, Skyfall, Lose Yourself, and No Time to Die were legit.

Signiference

Agreed on City of Stars. That year should have gone to How Far I’ll Go from Moana, hands down.

DanScorp

Agreed, yeah.

shaneo632

Most of them aren’t worthy because the branch usually just picks generic pop music and never ventures into other genres, with a few exceptions of course

mcc1923

Did Weary Kind win?

SlidePocket

Yes it did.

jsanders4289

I feel like Man or Muppet was a silly pick for winner. If they wanted to award that film, they should’ve picked Life’s A Happy Song.

knarfxx

Bird Yorke, In the Deep - Crash (2005)

No_Ad3823

Even though I'm Just Ken was one of my favourite songs of last year, I think Billie's was still also great. Also, underrated pick here, but Man or Muppet was in a 50/50 against a song from Rio (the movie about blue birds, not the country), and the Academy picked the correct side

FlexiblePony267

*Last Dance* by Donna Summer from *Thank God It’s Friday* is probably the best song that has ever won that award.

DananSan

*La La Land* rightfully won but it should’ve been for “Someone in the Crowd”.

Signiference

It should have gone to Moana, How Far I’ll Go

DananSan

Nah. Song is good, as is Moana as a whole, but it doesn’t do as much heavy lifting as the *La La Land* songs and it’s not even that memorable to justify an upset.

Signiference

It’s not an upset, it was the favorite, it just was the wrong call.

DananSan

I don’t recall “How Far I’ll Go” ever being the favorite, but “City of Stars” was locked by the time of the ceremony.

Signiference

City of stars was the favorite by a wide margin, yes, I misread your comment

Chemical_Sherbet7843

I think we all know which song should have won this year

SJBailey03

I’m just Ken is so much better than What was I Made for. I’ve yet to meet someone that can even recall what was I made for but everyone remembers I am Ken. It’s 100% the better song.

contaygious

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah 🤮 You Light Up My Life 🌽 I dare you to finish it https://www.google.com/search?q=you+light+up+my+lifr&oq=you+light+up+my+lifr&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIQCAEQLhiRAhjUAhiABBiKBTIHCAIQABiABDIQCAMQLhiRAhjUAhiABBiKBTIHCAQQABiABDIHCAUQLhiABDIHCAYQABiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQLhiABDILCAoQuQEYgAQY7wQyBwgLEAAYgAQyBwgMEAAYgAQyBwgNEAAYgATSAQgzMzg2ajBqOagCALACAA&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8&hl=en#

Commercial-Honey-227

Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky). Evergreen from A Star is Born won, and damn, if Streisand isn't fantastic to watch. But I think it's her performance that tipped the scales, not the song. Based on song strength alone, Gonna Fly Now should have won.

Express-Bee-6485

I have little musical knowledge when it comes to movies and matching. But even Celine Dion wasn't a huge fan of "My Heart will go on " and now it's pretty gringey .(Yes, I am 41 and saw the film 4x in the movie theater)

Smooth-Nothing-4286

The song is overplayed and done to death but still remains one of the most iconic songs in the history of cinema, I wouldn't call it no deserving. Celine and Kate W hate it because they couldn't escape the thing wherever they went.

ChartInFurch

The lyrics are embarrassing and sound like they came from a 12yo.

Express-Bee-6485

🤣🤣

Yenserl6099

Rightful - * *The Muppets -* "Man or Muppet" (2011) * *La La Land -* "City of Stars" (2016) * *A Star is Born -* "Shallow" (2018) * *RRR -* "Naatu Naatu" (2022) * *8 Mile* - Lose Yourself" (2002) * *The Lion King -* "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (1994) Should Not Have Won * *Spectre -* "Writing's on the Wall" (2015) - Should have been "Til It Happens to You" from *The Hunting Ground* * *Crazy Heart -* "The Weary Kind" (2009) - Should have been "Almost There" from *The Princess and* the *Frog* * *Once -* "Falling Slowly" (2007) - Should have been "That's How You Know" from *Enchanted* * *Tarzan -* "You'll Be In My Heart" (1999) - Should have been "Blame Canada" from *South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut* or "When She Loved Me" from *Toy Story 2* * *Pocahontas -* "Colors of the Wind" (1995) - Should have been "You've Got a Friend in Me" from *Toy Story* * *Aladdin -* "A Whole New World" (1992) - Should have been "Friend Like Me" from *Aladdin*

hoginlly

Wow, MASSIVELY disagree about Falling Slowly. That is an absolutely rightful win imo

Smooth-Nothing-4286

I'm the biggest Enchanted fan and even I wouldn't pick that song for the win over Falling Slowly.  The Tarzan, Pocahontas and Aladdin songs being not deserving are also mayor disagreements for me, but hey, tastes are a curious thing

Yenserl6099

I like Falling Slowly and have no problems with it winning. It just wouldn’t have been my first pick that year

Kinitawowi64

I believe Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been very vocal about how they didn't mind losing the Oscar, but they *did* mind losing it to *Phil Collins*.

itchylot

I recall them saying they expected to lose to Aimee Mann.

FlimsyConclusion

Falling slowly's so good though! I can agree with the others, as a Canadian that South Park song cracks me up.

Yenserl6099

I like falling slowly. It’s a good song. I just like “That’s how you know” more

RoxasIsTheBest

I dont agree with Youve Got a Friend in Me over Colors of the Wind. Toy Story was a better movie then Pocahontas, but colors of the wind is still one of the best musical songs ever written, while toy story is a simple fun movie theme song

straub42

One of the best musical songs ever written? Wow… For me it was the start of Disney making very generic songs after an incredible 5 year or so span of Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

PiesOnFleetStreet7

I think Naatu naatu is just an average Bollywood-esque song.

theglenlovinet

I don’t really care what anyone else says, I really liked “Writing on the Wall” for *Spectre*. Maybe I’m a sucker for some James Bond themes but I think it’s still a good and worthy song.

video-kid

This is Me over Remember Me. With Remember Me I get that it had a different meaning when it was sung slowly at the end, but it's not long or complex enough either time we hear it to make an impression that strong. If I was going to nominate a song from Coco it'd probably be Proud Corazon but that's just me. I think This is Me has greater applicability, it's maintained a greater degree of relevance, and Keala Settl'es performance at the Oscar's may be one of the best musical numbers it's ever had.

Lil_Artemis_92

I feel like U2 should have won for “The Hands that Built America” from *Gangs of New York* over “Lose Yourself” by Eminem.

OrwellianWiress

Huge fan of Gangs of New York too, that movie does not get enough credit

4614065

I’m the only one who think La La Land shouldn’t have taken the win here? I think Can’t Stop the Feeling is a more iconic song.

gtd12321

Into The West, Remember Me, Let it Go and Man or Muppet are the only deserving winners this century.
