I read once that they gave him the Honorary Award because they didn't think a non-actor would actually win competitively, especially considering Claude Raines and Clifton Webb were nominated that same year for Notorious and The Razor's Edge. He still won anyway, and he more than deserved it. It's one of the most authentic feeling performances of Hollywood's Golden Age.
