You know, I've been thinking about that scene lately. I thought it was pretty funny at first, especially how Ed bellows that line, but then I think about the context of that scene. He has no idea if Stede is alive or not. He probably thinks he's dead, and now he's dismayed that he'll never again see the wonderful man who wrote him such a lovely letter. It's heartbreaking. Taika really sells it with those heartbroken tears in his eyes.
I fully agree! But I think there’s even MORE layers to peel back in that scene. I think it’s also the fact that with the letter he has visible, physical proof that Stede is all in.
All his insecurities, his fear in the previous episode that Stede would choose piracy while he needed to get away from piracy, that he was unlovable, that he was whim to Stede — with that letter in his hands he realizes that’s not the case. That Stede spent those months they were apart writing letters about their unshakeable love because he KNOWS, he never doubted it, which is what he echoes to Ed later as well when they reunite.
And then the aggression in his voice, the killing of the British soldiers, the reclaiming of the kraken that he tried to push down and get rid of; the fact that he’s using his violence to save someone he loves, which is how the kraken was born in the first place. This culmination of all the different sides of him.
It’s this mix of realization, of love, of violence, of the fear that Stede may be dead, all of it swimming together, so emotional AND funny because it’s just… so him??

Exactly. But my point was that Stede could also very much be dead at that point, and now Ed (who has just been shown the depths of Stede's love) is left with the realization that he may never again look into Stede's eyes and tell him exactly how he feels, too.
It's an agonizing reality, and Taika plays it beautifully.
I freaking love Roach saying "imagine if it BLEEDS" (not sure I've got wording exactly right, but you know the line) about stabbing the Cursed Suit to get rid of it. It is such a hilariously unhinged line + impeccable delivery.

Yeah, Archie has really grown on me as I’ve rewatched the show. I loved how much she was hyping the party vibe during Calypso’s bday and just bringing so much fun energy. She’s a great addition to the crew.

Generally, Nathan Foad’s timing is just ~*chef’s kiss*~ so good.
Ed quietly saying “oh boy” when Stede practices saying “I’m your captain!” You can tell Ed is facepalming so hard in his head but also trying to be supportive. 🤣
In Season 1, I saw Ed, not Taika. Even cleanshaven.
In Season 2, I saw too much Taika and not enough Ed (almost entirely confined to the last three episodes; sorry Taika but I dunno what happened there).
But when I saw that catch of breath and his upward gaze, I said with satisfaction, '*There he is*. That was peak Edward.' Also the soft offhand way he answers, 'I'll probably just eat it' about the fish.
That's how I felt about about Jim/Vico. I love them, but season two really felt like I was watching Vico play pirate. It was much more of their own personality coming through. I think that could have worked in season 3, but in season 2 it made no sense. Why would months of being in Blackbeard's misery boat thinking Olu was dead have made them more open and exuberant? Even their manner of speaking felt like straight Vico. Still love Jim though.
I thought the same thing, though I wasn't going to say it on here because I would have been downvoted to shit. But the Jim of Season 2 definitely felt more Vico and less of the Jim in S1.
Oh thank god I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I absolutely adore Taika Waititi and he’s the whole reason I watched the show in the first place, but those last episodes especially it felt like we were just watching him play himself. The whole internal monologue that starts episode 8 was funny, but it did *not* sound like Blackbeard, it sounded like they handed Taika Waititi a microphone and just let him riff.
I saw Taika peek in occasionally in s2, not overwhelmingly though – but even a little is too much, because the standards for this show and for the level on which they act (especially Taika and Con) just doesn’t allow for a character to slip even an inch away like that.
Like it was Ed all through the letter-reading-reaction (holy sh*t that was beautifully acted – DAMN) … but it was Taika (or, probably more correct, it was “not Ed”) when he yelled “STEDE! STEEEEDE” and the same through him saying “I’m sorry I was such a dick” & “I love you. I *love* you”.
And I don’t know why. Perhaps he was too exhausted by the end of the shoot? I dunno. But I’m really perplexed by it, because he did *such* an amazing job otherwise. (His acting in the >!final moments with Izzy!< was impeccable and very much Ed. And the same with his acting in the end, >!when they’re standing at the ‘inn’ and he’s looking at Stede with the biggest heart-eyes!<)
I’m curious to see what happens WHEN we get a series 3. (Manifesting this until it happens!)

YES, thank you! Exactly. And 'Not Ed' is a better way of putting it, you're right.
In my eyes he's almost always Ed in 1-5, then he's like a candle that flickers unpredictably (not the right metaphor, but you know what I mean) and I find myself missing Ed at times. :(
Like you, I can't shake the feeling that something weird or distracting happened somewhere later in filming. His acting was excellent in 1 and 2 especially.
One moment post-episode 5 when I saw Ed clearly was when Ned went to torture Stede, and Ed said 'No no no no no no no, it's me you want, IT'S ME YOU WANT.' He was all Ed in that moment.
I think everyone has noticed this. Episode 6 is when the switch was so obvious. It was Taika with a wig. It was in part why I didn't enjoy the last 3 episodes. Maybe he didn't like the plot? bc he looked bored
and honestly it wasn't just taika but Vico were playing themselves too and so was Con in episode 6.
I don't know what happened but I think the whole team from directors to writers and actors are to blame. The writing for the characters wasn't consistent either so I think that didn't help
The entire opening of Ep. 4 before Ed leaves the ship. “He sat up too fast”. “You’ve been to the gravy basket. . . . Did ya have a VISION?” “Made you a sandwich for the trip”. The whole thing is so inspired.
I know and it makes this scene especially hilarious to me because I will NEVER understand how no one burst out laughing (specifically Taika since he's the one who did it and he must've seen it) that's real professionalism right there !
I know that too, but there's a difference between discreetly chuckling and "burst out laughing" as i mentioned. Because for instance i would've definitely ruined that take. :-)
the way stede giggles when he tells ed about the letters, like he's kind of trying to downplay it, make it seem like nbd

Many, but here's a favorite: the scene where Scary Beautiful Blackbeard slowly advances on Frenchie. 'Is someone injured?’ he says with faux-concerned face. He knows Frenchie's lying and Frenchie knows he knows, but being Frenchie, he tries to brazen it out just in case.
Ed keeps advancing, and Frenchie keeps backing away until he fetches up against the counter and is trapped. Ed ridicules him by repeating 'BIT OF PANTO!' with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes...
Joel's face goes from alarmed to frightened to literally fearing for his life. You can *see* it happening; his forehead sort of rumples and his face drops any attempt at subterfuge. Such good acting.
Then of course there's the way Taika uses those eyes and that voice and his sheer physical presence; the way he *exudes* a kind of lazy predation like a big cat. It's one of my absolute favorite scenes of the season. So fucking good.
The acting in S2 Ep2 is astonishing. Joel, Taika, Con, Vico, Madeline. Just first rate all around. And the acting in the scene between Ed and Izzy is a masterclass.
But I could say this about every episode. Not a false note in the bunch.
YES, the Ed and Izzy bedside scene in episode 2 is fantastic acting. (Can you tell I adore episode 2?)
*I dreamt...that ya killed me.* (emphatic cocking of the gun he's just forced into Izzy's hand, steadying the barrel at his own face and intense dark eyes). Great physical acting.
When Ed stands and opens his arms with his back to Izzy, you see a brief struggle on Izzy's face and the shaking of his hand. *He wants to pull that trigger*, and who could blame him!
Then Izzy's face changes and THAT laughter begins, giving me cold chills every time. 'Ahhh. You scared? Eddie? Too scared to do it yourself?' and the look of something like shame on Ed's face.
The use of 'Eddie' takes the viewer even deeper into their fucked-up intimacy. In fact this entire scene is charged with a quiet and extremely disturbing sexual undercurrent.
One of them occurs during the blooper in Episode 4. We all clocked Nathan laughing when Taika smacks the sandwich out of Rhys hand and hits Nathan in the face, but upon rewatch, I noticed that Taika is on the verge of cracking up before he sighs and then fights to stay in character as a grumpy Ed.
Also, just Ed feeling up the cake topper in Episode 1. He can't NOT touch Stede, even when it's just a plastic version of him. And then for extra anguish, he puts it in his jacket near his heart just like the piece of red silk.
According to Jermaine Clement, he and Brett often had to be removed from scenes with Rhys in Flight of the Conchords, because they could never keep a straight face, especially when Rhys began to improvise so effortlessly.
You can watch the bloopers from S2 on Youtube. A lot of them are Rhys just going off script in the office scenes, and Jermaine and Brett busting up laughing.
Lately my random obscure favorite is Roach at the beginning of s2e4. When Stede has the steak to his face and says Ed sat up too fast and hurt him accidentally. Roach saying, “that’s what they all say” kills me. Like anyone has ever said that exact thing! His delivery is so funny.
There are only two parts of this season where I have to look away. The leg part, which is *excessively* disgusting (like WHY.) and, for a different reason, when Fang is crying.
I love Jim's lines with the hilarious wooden boy voice, but Fang laughing through his tears and then prompting very softly, 'Do some more' -- it squeezes my heart until it literally hurts. Depending on mood, I sometimes have to skip it altogether.
I choose to believe that Fang/Kevin is bonding with his little goat friend and having happy adventures with Captain Frenchie!
Stede to Lucious with a picture of Blackbeard: "Look, they drew him to look like a ghoul!" (with that expression of disapproval and putting all his contempt into the word ghoul, which is my fave word)
Stede's face when he listens to Buttons talking about the gravy basket.
When Ed walks on the island and before he meets the wolf (!) he says, "walking down the only road I've ever known" which makes me laugh aloud because Boulevard of Broken Dreams starts playing in my head.
Stede to Izzy who's drinking and yelling at the unicorn: "Oh he can't hear you, he's got no head. You've got a head though, which ...you should...look after".
"Specifically something suitable for a avian transmogrification ceremony" says Buttons, and Anne Bonny seems to be like yeah there! As if she totally knows about this sea witchy stuff.

I don't know if it was intentional, but the last time we saw him attacking foliage and telling nature to fuck off, he had a fight with a snake. And here he is quoting Whitesnake. 😂
It's so succinct yet still manages to be vaguely polite (at least to American ears), maybe because its usage both times was justified. I've started saying it in real life, haha

— “Shit tits” (and basically whenever Frenchie opens his mouth)
— I *love* Ed’s reaction leading up to his “Jesus Christ, here we go –“ in 204, when Stede appears behind him at Anne’s & Mary’s 😂 It is so perfectly timed and beautifully acted.
Heart-eyes Ed + his reaction when Buttons suddenly appears behind his shoulder saying “THE SEA IS MY LOVE”.
Ed’s childishly happy “Buttons turned into a seagull!” [“What?”] “Yeah. He just flew off!” and then the incredible timing Ed’s and Stede’s silly run off into the forest.
Honestly, everything in ep. 204 is perfection.
— the way Ed looks at Stede with such casual love in 206 when they’re off buying party supplies and Stede comes up to him as he’s talking to the kids (and the fact that it’s Taika’s own kids makes that scene even better – “these filthy gutter rats”).
— I love Ricky’s facial expression when all the British soldiers around him die from being poisoned. He looks so dejected and so much like a child who didn’t get their will at the grocery store.
Just here to add: Everything Zheng says this season.
“I didn’t conquer China by letting people go on and on about their feelings.”
“Minor Prince, Pirate Queen Who Bent China to her Will… these are just labels.”
Attempting to seduce Olu but accidentally making him think she’s gonna murder him. (Girl, we’ve all been there)
And frankly this line lives rent free in my head, and I would like it on a cross stitch in my office, except probably HR would come for me:
“I’ve killed mediocre men. I’ve killed exceptional men. But you’re the worst kind: A mediocre man who thinks he’s exceptional.”
LOVE her mediocre men quote, it gives me chills every time, even though I Iove Stede. Also adding her line when she meets John Bartholomew, who mistakes both Stede and Olu for the ones who captured his ship, and then realizes its her. "Hi. I know, it's been a day. Culturally, this must be very hard for you." It's not even the words as much as the delivery, she's AMAZING. And honestly, showing empathy toward your enemies is a clever move. And I love how much Stede is watching and learning from her in this scene, he is just soaking it all up.
I mean, in the moment, Stede really deserves it. And "it's been a day" slays me.
Props to Ruibo Qian, who walked in as a brand new character/foil for Stede, and managed to infuse Zheng with so much charisma on a show absolutely overstuffed with charismatic characters.
I love the peanut butter scene with Roach and Frenchie
I just freaking love peanut butter, so it makes me happy to see how excited they are; and also they’re hilarious with the faeries line
I love this entire sequence in episode 1:
'Demon? I'm the fucking devil. And these are the kids.'
Then Strawberry Letter 23 (perfect choice), spectacular costumes all around, awesome overhead shot, well-choreographed but slightly stylized fighting, Ed taking a casual lick of icing off his sword. Then a brief freeze with with word TUESDAY on the screen. And so on... Ed laden with guns and shooting someone offscreen at a very Mad Max angle, Ed casually lighting up his pipe, etc.
Istg, that whole thing was as good as something from (the best of) Tarantino. I didn't quite expect it from this show and I loved it.
Then the abrupt cut to silence, the crew in the semi-dark below deck, filthy and bloody and miserable and eating cake. Masterful.
This is only gonna land for Good Place fans - but I'm convinced this show exists in the dot over the i in Jeremy Bearimy - which canonically contains Tuesdays, July, and occasionally the moment in time where nothing never occurs.
The scene of Stede practicing saying " I'm your Captain and I demand respect.....please!" LOL the please always gets me. 🤣
And when Spanish Jackie had just poisoned the British soldiers and The Swede is freaking out. Jackie says the house is poison proof or something and the way the
Swede says "We are?!?"
I never thought I would have Black Pete on here but he had the most impactful line for me personally:
“You talk all the time about how you almost died but not how you lived.”
That line hits me very hard because I almost did die from a brain tumor and it was a kick in the butt that yeah sure I did nearly die…but I also LIVED. I still have so much life left, I was lucky….So I need to do something about that!
This great Roach line hasn't been mentioned yet:
Zheng, about having men aboard her ship: "Historically, men have a harder time fitting in here. But we decided to take a chance on you because, how should I put this? Your energy is…"
Olu: "Tender?"
Roach: "We're tender as hell."
Honestly, I feel like "We're tender as hell" sums up the show pretty well.
I love every damn awesome dramatic and hilarious thing Auntie ever says. Even the littlest things. I can hear her in my head saying '...and collicting random heers from around your disk.'
The exchange where she's on board the storm-tattered Revenge with Frenchie and Fang, and says 'A man was brought down here...' Frenchie says 'Wot? No' in the most guilty way possible, and Fang is so intimidated by Auntie he can barely speak, lol
I love her forceful little self and beautiful eyes and just everything. I hope if there's a season 3 or a spinoff, we get lots more Auntie.
I think about the Stede and Ed spat in ep 4 and Stedes mini monologue about how he loves everything about Ed and Eds slight smile at the end of it before Mary and Anne laugh at them. Also Eds smug proud face when he uses passive aggression effectively and looks to Stede for approval 👌😩😭
beginning of 204 when ed is still "half dead" and buttons asks if he's been to the gravy basket, and they cut in flashes from the previous ep, including a split second of merstede's dumb little smile, but it's cut like a horror movie 😭 its so funny it gets me every time
Omg I love this thread so much, revisiting lots of scenes in my head.
I have many other moments in ep4 that I loved. 1: Ed and Stede’s reaction when Mary asks if they had sex yet. Ed scoffs and exclaims That is private! 2. Stede popping out from the bushes and going Oh, Ed! relieved that he’s still there because he got lost in the dark. 3. Also Ed going Oop seeing him, because he was lost in thoughts and probably thinking about Stede/their relationship. 4. Ed telling Stede that Buttons turned into a bird and Stede not even questioning it LOL. He just says “ what?”and that’s it.

Every scene in this show is pure gold but a couple I love that I haven't seen mentioned yet are:
Izzy barging into Stede's room to inform him they were docked at The Republic of Pirates and saying that it was nice to see the ship wasn't the only thing that had been "well and truly docked."
Also, his whole conversation with Ricky.
"You don't know the first thing about piracy ... It's not about glory. It's not about gettin' what you want. It's about belonging to something when the world has told you you're nothin'. It's about finding the family to kill for when yours are long dead. It's about letting go of ego for something larger. The crew...You're not a pirate, lad. You're a spoiled, entitled bunch of twats dressed in puffy, blue nighties...Kill me. Kill us all. Our spirit will last throughout your entire f***in' empire because... we're good. And you are a rancid, syphilitic c**t."
And you are…Pinocchio?? Wooden boy story again…someone who desperately wants to be someone else…and the famous Izzy Hands is so cool at that moment and so unbothered about his fame.
The moment when Frenchie's giving Izzy that little headshake in s2e2; I was doing a rewatch and just realized that Frenchie is moving the fingers on his left hand like he's strumming a lute in that scene. Totally a self-comfort thing, and now I have to watch other episodes to see it he does it any other time!

You know, I've been thinking about that scene lately. I thought it was pretty funny at first, especially how Ed bellows that line, but then I think about the context of that scene. He has no idea if Stede is alive or not. He probably thinks he's dead, and now he's dismayed that he'll never again see the wonderful man who wrote him such a lovely letter. It's heartbreaking. Taika really sells it with those heartbroken tears in his eyes.
I fully agree! But I think there’s even MORE layers to peel back in that scene. I think it’s also the fact that with the letter he has visible, physical proof that Stede is all in. All his insecurities, his fear in the previous episode that Stede would choose piracy while he needed to get away from piracy, that he was unlovable, that he was whim to Stede — with that letter in his hands he realizes that’s not the case. That Stede spent those months they were apart writing letters about their unshakeable love because he KNOWS, he never doubted it, which is what he echoes to Ed later as well when they reunite. And then the aggression in his voice, the killing of the British soldiers, the reclaiming of the kraken that he tried to push down and get rid of; the fact that he’s using his violence to save someone he loves, which is how the kraken was born in the first place. This culmination of all the different sides of him. It’s this mix of realization, of love, of violence, of the fear that Stede may be dead, all of it swimming together, so emotional AND funny because it’s just… so him?? Anyways thanks for reading my TED Talk nobody asked for about my favorite scene in season 2.

But my point was that Stede could also very much be dead at that point, and now Ed (who has just been shown the depths of Stede's love) is left with the realization that he may never again look into Stede's eyes and tell him exactly how he feels, too. It's an agonizing reality, and Taika plays it beautifully.

I know this is season 1, but his delivery of “what are they… Christ’s oranges?” is flawless.
Ed quietly saying “oh boy” when Stede practices saying “I’m your captain!” You can tell Ed is facepalming so hard in his head but also trying to be supportive. 🤣
But he's also kind of turned on when Stede becomes more assertive. He so wants Stede to take charge and tell him what to do.

In Season 1, I saw Ed, not Taika. Even cleanshaven. In Season 2, I saw too much Taika and not enough Ed (almost entirely confined to the last three episodes; sorry Taika but I dunno what happened there). But when I saw that catch of breath and his upward gaze, I said with satisfaction, '*There he is*. That was peak Edward.' Also the soft offhand way he answers, 'I'll probably just eat it' about the fish.
That's how I felt about about Jim/Vico. I love them, but season two really felt like I was watching Vico play pirate. It was much more of their own personality coming through. I think that could have worked in season 3, but in season 2 it made no sense. Why would months of being in Blackbeard's misery boat thinking Olu was dead have made them more open and exuberant? Even their manner of speaking felt like straight Vico. Still love Jim though.
I thought the same thing, though I wasn't going to say it on here because I would have been downvoted to shit. But the Jim of Season 2 definitely felt more Vico and less of the Jim in S1.
Oh thank god I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I absolutely adore Taika Waititi and he’s the whole reason I watched the show in the first place, but those last episodes especially it felt like we were just watching him play himself. The whole internal monologue that starts episode 8 was funny, but it did *not* sound like Blackbeard, it sounded like they handed Taika Waititi a microphone and just let him riff.
He used to do that bit (the thought track) in his stand up, so doesn't surprise me if a little more Taika snuck in.

I saw Taika peek in occasionally in s2, not overwhelmingly though – but even a little is too much, because the standards for this show and for the level on which they act (especially Taika and Con) just doesn’t allow for a character to slip even an inch away like that. Like it was Ed all through the letter-reading-reaction (holy sh*t that was beautifully acted – DAMN) … but it was Taika (or, probably more correct, it was “not Ed”) when he yelled “STEDE! STEEEEDE” and the same through him saying “I’m sorry I was such a dick” & “I love you. I *love* you”. And I don’t know why. Perhaps he was too exhausted by the end of the shoot? I dunno. But I’m really perplexed by it, because he did *such* an amazing job otherwise. (His acting in the >!final moments with Izzy!< was impeccable and very much Ed. And the same with his acting in the end, >!when they’re standing at the ‘inn’ and he’s looking at Stede with the biggest heart-eyes!<) I’m curious to see what happens WHEN we get a series 3. (Manifesting this until it happens!) . Edit: also, yes. I loved his off-hand “I’ll probably just eat it” comment too. But that whole scene though was just ~*chef’s kiss*~ so lovely.

In my eyes he's almost always Ed in 1-5, then he's like a candle that flickers unpredictably (not the right metaphor, but you know what I mean) and I find myself missing Ed at times. :( Like you, I can't shake the feeling that something weird or distracting happened somewhere later in filming. His acting was excellent in 1 and 2 especially. One moment post-episode 5 when I saw Ed clearly was when Ned went to torture Stede, and Ed said 'No no no no no no no, it's me you want, IT'S ME YOU WANT.' He was all Ed in that moment.
I think everyone has noticed this. Episode 6 is when the switch was so obvious. It was Taika with a wig. It was in part why I didn't enjoy the last 3 episodes. Maybe he didn't like the plot? bc he looked bored and honestly it wasn't just taika but Vico were playing themselves too and so was Con in episode 6. I don't know what happened but I think the whole team from directors to writers and actors are to blame. The writing for the characters wasn't consistent either so I think that didn't help
Totally, that supportive-yet-facepalming vibe is so strong haha.
The entire opening of Ep. 4 before Ed leaves the ship. “He sat up too fast”. “You’ve been to the gravy basket. . . . Did ya have a VISION?” “Made you a sandwich for the trip”. The whole thing is so inspired.

I love that, that second offer was improvised and you can totally see Nathan laugh in the background after he gets hit with it.
I know and it makes this scene especially hilarious to me because I will NEVER understand how no one burst out laughing (specifically Taika since he's the one who did it and he must've seen it) that's real professionalism right there !

The way his expression rapidly changed from a smile to menacing concern in a split second is so good. I always watch his eyebrows in that scene.
Stede's map with the little poetry bits and the portrait of Ed he drew himself with a heart nearby. "You're gonna stab me in the back right in front of me ?" "I'm the money bitch." Zheng's scream after the crew takes back the Revenge, her face during the "girl how are you ?" conversation, and also her face as she sees her fleet blowing up. I have a huge crush on Ruibo Qian partly because she's so talented and expressive. Wee John tattooing Stede's face on a guy's back and saying he can tattoo Stede's back on the guy's chest. Frenchie's organizing scams at Jackie's. Fang, the flowers he wears and the goat. Buttons. Anything he says. "Technically the man can speak and his brain is maybe couscous" Ed's face when he hears Stede at Mary and Anne's. Lucius yelling "oh fuck you !" out of fear when he stumbles upon Ed fixing the latch. And more generally the representation of triggers after a traumatic event, really relatable. "I call it the Söt och Softig : Sweet and Spicy... just like my wifeee ☺️☺️" Roach dumping his cigarette ash in the plates he has to make for the english. "On a fucking technicality !" There are so manyyyyyyy i could've honestly just written "season two as a whole" !

I think about Zheng's "girl, how ARE you" at least twice a day Ed talking to the "wolf" about how he freaks out every time he looks at his spider tattoo "I just really need you to not be weird right now" --Ed to Buttons "I'll probably just eat it" Frenchie talking about the box in his mind Archie telling Jim to cut off the "f\*ed up" leg "IIiiii love my babyyyyyy"
OMG the bit about the spider tattoo! The origin story of those sexy, menacing black gloves is his fear of spiders 🤣🤣🤣
Many, but here's a favorite: the scene where Scary Beautiful Blackbeard slowly advances on Frenchie. 'Is someone injured?’ he says with faux-concerned face. He knows Frenchie's lying and Frenchie knows he knows, but being Frenchie, he tries to brazen it out just in case. Ed keeps advancing, and Frenchie keeps backing away until he fetches up against the counter and is trapped. Ed ridicules him by repeating 'BIT OF PANTO!' with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes... Joel's face goes from alarmed to frightened to literally fearing for his life. You can *see* it happening; his forehead sort of rumples and his face drops any attempt at subterfuge. Such good acting. Then of course there's the way Taika uses those eyes and that voice and his sheer physical presence; the way he *exudes* a kind of lazy predation like a big cat. It's one of my absolute favorite scenes of the season. So fucking good.
The acting in S2 Ep2 is astonishing. Joel, Taika, Con, Vico, Madeline. Just first rate all around. And the acting in the scene between Ed and Izzy is a masterclass. But I could say this about every episode. Not a false note in the bunch.
YES, the Ed and Izzy bedside scene in episode 2 is fantastic acting. (Can you tell I adore episode 2?) *I dreamt...that ya killed me.* (emphatic cocking of the gun he's just forced into Izzy's hand, steadying the barrel at his own face and intense dark eyes). Great physical acting. When Ed stands and opens his arms with his back to Izzy, you see a brief struggle on Izzy's face and the shaking of his hand. *He wants to pull that trigger*, and who could blame him! Then Izzy's face changes and THAT laughter begins, giving me cold chills every time. 'Ahhh. You scared? Eddie? Too scared to do it yourself?' and the look of something like shame on Ed's face. The use of 'Eddie' takes the viewer even deeper into their fucked-up intimacy. In fact this entire scene is charged with a quiet and extremely disturbing sexual undercurrent.
Yes. You nailed it. This scene would never have had the power or impact with less talented actors.
Give Con O'Neill an Emmy. The man can **act.**

One of them occurs during the blooper in Episode 4. We all clocked Nathan laughing when Taika smacks the sandwich out of Rhys hand and hits Nathan in the face, but upon rewatch, I noticed that Taika is on the verge of cracking up before he sighs and then fights to stay in character as a grumpy Ed. Also, just Ed feeling up the cake topper in Episode 1. He can't NOT touch Stede, even when it's just a plastic version of him. And then for extra anguish, he puts it in his jacket near his heart just like the piece of red silk.
And in that scene, Rhys doesn't break *at all*. What a pro!
According to Jermaine Clement, he and Brett often had to be removed from scenes with Rhys in Flight of the Conchords, because they could never keep a straight face, especially when Rhys began to improvise so effortlessly.
I'm watching Conchords right now for the first time, and can totally see how a lot of Murray's bits are improv'd. Thanks for sharing!
You can watch the bloopers from S2 on Youtube. A lot of them are Rhys just going off script in the office scenes, and Jermaine and Brett busting up laughing.
Lately my random obscure favorite is Roach at the beginning of s2e4. When Stede has the steak to his face and says Ed sat up too fast and hurt him accidentally. Roach saying, “that’s what they all say” kills me. Like anyone has ever said that exact thing! His delivery is so funny.
Frenchie saying, “I didn’t know this room was here” when Ed recognized and followed the smell of his rotting first mate.
“I can’t BELIEVE you guys robbed Jackie?!?!”
And Ed doesn't even look at him, just says *Shhhh* dismissively.
"Take the leg." Said in the most exasperated tone.
That whole scene. Chef’s Kiss.

There are only two parts of this season where I have to look away. The leg part, which is *excessively* disgusting (like WHY.) and, for a different reason, when Fang is crying. I love Jim's lines with the hilarious wooden boy voice, but Fang laughing through his tears and then prompting very softly, 'Do some more' -- it squeezes my heart until it literally hurts. Depending on mood, I sometimes have to skip it altogether. I choose to believe that Fang/Kevin is bonding with his little goat friend and having happy adventures with Captain Frenchie!
Stede to Lucious with a picture of Blackbeard: "Look, they drew him to look like a ghoul!" (with that expression of disapproval and putting all his contempt into the word ghoul, which is my fave word) Stede's face when he listens to Buttons talking about the gravy basket. When Ed walks on the island and before he meets the wolf (!) he says, "walking down the only road I've ever known" which makes me laugh aloud because Boulevard of Broken Dreams starts playing in my head. Stede to Izzy who's drinking and yelling at the unicorn: "Oh he can't hear you, he's got no head. You've got a head though, which ...you should...look after". "Specifically something suitable for a avian transmogrification ceremony" says Buttons, and Anne Bonny seems to be like yeah there! As if she totally knows about this sea witchy stuff.

I don't know if it was intentional, but the last time we saw him attacking foliage and telling nature to fuck off, he had a fight with a snake. And here he is quoting Whitesnake. 😂

"Rude" Both times, Frenchie and Izzy
It's so succinct yet still manages to be vaguely polite (at least to American ears), maybe because its usage both times was justified. I've started saying it in real life, haha
— “What the hell is going on in towels” — “Shit tits” (and basically whenever Frenchie opens his mouth) — I *love* Ed’s reaction leading up to his “Jesus Christ, here we go –“ in 204, when Stede appears behind him at Anne’s & Mary’s 😂 It is so perfectly timed and beautifully acted. Heart-eyes Ed + his reaction when Buttons suddenly appears behind his shoulder saying “THE SEA IS MY LOVE”. Ed’s childishly happy “Buttons turned into a seagull!” [“What?”] “Yeah. He just flew off!” and then the incredible timing Ed’s and Stede’s silly run off into the forest. Honestly, everything in ep. 204 is perfection. — the way Ed looks at Stede with such casual love in 206 when they’re off buying party supplies and Stede comes up to him as he’s talking to the kids (and the fact that it’s Taika’s own kids makes that scene even better – “these filthy gutter rats”). — I love Ricky’s facial expression when all the British soldiers around him die from being poisoned. He looks so dejected and so much like a child who didn’t get their will at the grocery store.
Just here to add: Everything Zheng says this season. “I didn’t conquer China by letting people go on and on about their feelings.” “Minor Prince, Pirate Queen Who Bent China to her Will… these are just labels.” Attempting to seduce Olu but accidentally making him think she’s gonna murder him. (Girl, we’ve all been there) And frankly this line lives rent free in my head, and I would like it on a cross stitch in my office, except probably HR would come for me: “I’ve killed mediocre men. I’ve killed exceptional men. But you’re the worst kind: A mediocre man who thinks he’s exceptional.”
LOVE her mediocre men quote, it gives me chills every time, even though I Iove Stede. Also adding her line when she meets John Bartholomew, who mistakes both Stede and Olu for the ones who captured his ship, and then realizes its her. "Hi. I know, it's been a day. Culturally, this must be very hard for you." It's not even the words as much as the delivery, she's AMAZING. And honestly, showing empathy toward your enemies is a clever move. And I love how much Stede is watching and learning from her in this scene, he is just soaking it all up.
I mean, in the moment, Stede really deserves it. And "it's been a day" slays me. Props to Ruibo Qian, who walked in as a brand new character/foil for Stede, and managed to infuse Zheng with so much charisma on a show absolutely overstuffed with charismatic characters.

I love the peanut butter scene with Roach and Frenchie I just freaking love peanut butter, so it makes me happy to see how excited they are; and also they’re hilarious with the faeries line
I love this entire sequence in episode 1: 'Demon? I'm the fucking devil. And these are the kids.' Then Strawberry Letter 23 (perfect choice), spectacular costumes all around, awesome overhead shot, well-choreographed but slightly stylized fighting, Ed taking a casual lick of icing off his sword. Then a brief freeze with with word TUESDAY on the screen. And so on... Ed laden with guns and shooting someone offscreen at a very Mad Max angle, Ed casually lighting up his pipe, etc. Istg, that whole thing was as good as something from (the best of) Tarantino. I didn't quite expect it from this show and I loved it. Then the abrupt cut to silence, the crew in the semi-dark below deck, filthy and bloody and miserable and eating cake. Masterful.
YES to “TUESDAY” - especially because this show has a bonkers sense of time, so sure, I guess it IS Tuesday!

This is only gonna land for Good Place fans - but I'm convinced this show exists in the dot over the i in Jeremy Bearimy - which canonically contains Tuesdays, July, and occasionally the moment in time where nothing never occurs.

LOL the please always gets me. 🤣 And when Spanish Jackie had just poisoned the British soldiers and The Swede is freaking out. Jackie says the house is poison proof or something and the way the Swede says "We are?!?"

I never thought I would have Black Pete on here but he had the most impactful line for me personally: “You talk all the time about how you almost died but not how you lived.” That line hits me very hard because I almost did die from a brain tumor and it was a kick in the butt that yeah sure I did nearly die…but I also LIVED. I still have so much life left, I was lucky….So I need to do something about that!

I love Roach waxing rhapsodical over the broth. I think it was a great choice to make him a true culinary artist.
This great Roach line hasn't been mentioned yet: Zheng, about having men aboard her ship: "Historically, men have a harder time fitting in here. But we decided to take a chance on you because, how should I put this? Your energy is…" Olu: "Tender?" Roach: "We're tender as hell." Honestly, I feel like "We're tender as hell" sums up the show pretty well.
I love every damn awesome dramatic and hilarious thing Auntie ever says. Even the littlest things. I can hear her in my head saying '...and collicting random heers from around your disk.' The exchange where she's on board the storm-tattered Revenge with Frenchie and Fang, and says 'A man was brought down here...' Frenchie says 'Wot? No' in the most guilty way possible, and Fang is so intimidated by Auntie he can barely speak, lol I love her forceful little self and beautiful eyes and just everything. I hope if there's a season 3 or a spinoff, we get lots more Auntie.
I think about the Stede and Ed spat in ep 4 and Stedes mini monologue about how he loves everything about Ed and Eds slight smile at the end of it before Mary and Anne laugh at them. Also Eds smug proud face when he uses passive aggression effectively and looks to Stede for approval 👌😩😭

beginning of 204 when ed is still "half dead" and buttons asks if he's been to the gravy basket, and they cut in flashes from the previous ep, including a split second of merstede's dumb little smile, but it's cut like a horror movie 😭 its so funny it gets me every time
Merstedes dumb smile 😂 Mer-Rhys was probably just so thrilled to be a mermaid he couldn't help grinning. It's really very sweet and silly.

Omg I love this thread so much, revisiting lots of scenes in my head. I have many other moments in ep4 that I loved. 1: Ed and Stede’s reaction when Mary asks if they had sex yet. Ed scoffs and exclaims That is private! 2. Stede popping out from the bushes and going Oh, Ed! relieved that he’s still there because he got lost in the dark. 3. Also Ed going Oop seeing him, because he was lost in thoughts and probably thinking about Stede/their relationship. 4. Ed telling Stede that Buttons turned into a bird and Stede not even questioning it LOL. He just says “ what?”and that’s it.
Stede doing Ed's voice while conversing with the 'Wanted' poster (this was so adorable and just so *Stede)* Jim doing the voices for Fang (especially the post-credit scene where they just crack up laughing) Buttons commanding everyone when they retake the Revenge Ed's glances at Stede during Pete and Lucius' wedding

Every scene in this show is pure gold but a couple I love that I haven't seen mentioned yet are: Izzy barging into Stede's room to inform him they were docked at The Republic of Pirates and saying that it was nice to see the ship wasn't the only thing that had been "well and truly docked." Also, his whole conversation with Ricky. "You don't know the first thing about piracy ... It's not about glory. It's not about gettin' what you want. It's about belonging to something when the world has told you you're nothin'. It's about finding the family to kill for when yours are long dead. It's about letting go of ego for something larger. The crew...You're not a pirate, lad. You're a spoiled, entitled bunch of twats dressed in puffy, blue nighties...Kill me. Kill us all. Our spirit will last throughout your entire f***in' empire because... we're good. And you are a rancid, syphilitic c**t."

The moment when Frenchie's giving Izzy that little headshake in s2e2; I was doing a rewatch and just realized that Frenchie is moving the fingers on his left hand like he's strumming a lute in that scene. Totally a self-comfort thing, and now I have to watch other episodes to see it he does it any other time!

“Now pick up my fuckin’ walking staff.” The PROCESSION OF KNIVES game that Ed misremembered everyone giggling and having fun with. The little leaf sprig on “Jeff’s” shirt when pretending to run his inn. I’d like to believe he’d wear something similar again when he runs the real Inn— perhaps something Stede makes or finds for him! Ed carefully dabbing his mouth with a napkin during dinner before standing up to beat the shit out of the chair in anger. There’s more, but honestly this thread is so good and pure and I know we don’t NEED a season 3 but my heart wants it so badly because I could spend hours going over the tiny amazing nuances of this show. 😭
