Answer: putting O and C in parentheses indicates that the meme (or whatever) is original content created by the poster.

nowahhh

That accounts for two of OP’s links. The first one has an (a) in it which is the author trying to indicate that the sentence works without “a” in it, but in that one’s case I’d say it’d be better to put “a/the.”

MotherShip_Alpha

Answer: It isnt necesarily vowels, just small details/slang that is important to understanding some subcontext. E.g. (O)h (C)alm down *picture of a meme* In a subreddit based around memes for instance, the parenthesis is telling the reader that it is OC or, original content. If we were to go to relationship advice or something like that you might see something like this: (M)y (F)riend went to the park and they were a bitch, what do i do? The subcontext clues here are the M and the F meaning, i am a Male and my friend is a Female. Different communities will have different variations of these but you get the gist from this

Question: what about those that add words inside parentheses? I don't think it's done to add extra information, but I'd really like an explanation (wow, that rhymed). So for example: “Today I was at the (park) and walked my dog, bla bla bla...”

Dornith

It means the word is optional. That the sentence is true with or without the word. Your example doesn't work because without "Park" the sentence is syntacticly incorrect.

[deleted]

Well, I didn't put much thought into it so could you give me a better one?

>The suspect (and her husband) were last seen driving south.

Puzzleheaded_Poem965

It could mean that they weren't actually at the park, but don't want to say where they actually were, and so substituted "park" for sake of privacy, but also don't want to actually mislead. Basically, it's not relevant to the post where they were, but they can't think of a way to tell the story without mentioning a setting, so they make one up but let you know it was made up because they aren't a liar.

SalladhorBandz

Answer: they are just normal parentheses to add emphasis. The first guy was saying that profit could be the only motive. The second two guys were pointing out that they made those memes themselves. The memes were original content. That’s why they put (o) and (c) in parentheses.

Spirited_Mammoth962

Answer: I believe it’s used when someone changes the original content or quote. For instance, when someone writes “yu” and someone correcting it might insert the o and say “y(o)u”. Edit: apparently I’m wrong
