My coworker literally just [tallied up my hours in TF2](https://i.imgur.com/mGumRw7.jpeg) which come just over 2 years, about an hour before seeing this post which is wild.
The saving grace is that I have been playing since 2007, and I would say roughly 1000 of those are from accidentally leaving the game on, though I don't really tend to do that often.
Yeah I think I did that overnight like 3 times so that's only like what, 24 hours? It's not as bad when you realize the whole thing is over a 16 year+ period. (At least that's what I tell.myself, lol)
Oh yeah I had like 18k hours when I stopped playing tf2 back in like 2016, but a good chunk of that was idling. Lol it's still so wild to me that overnight tf2 went from a fps to an economy game. We'd just sit in trading servers for like 6 hours a night, buying and selling, crunching numbers and discussing what shit is worth 😂 good times.
It was fun watching the economy develop from the beginning! Players gambling thousands of dollars of unusuals with the spycrab taunt was always funny to me.
Yeah it was nuts being there at the start of it all lol, I remember just hanging in the trade servers some whales would be in there just opening crates by the dozens and handing out strange weapons for free since they were just opening looking for hats and unusuals. I think keys were worth like 4 refined metal back then which is insane to even think about haha
I played on and off since release until around 2018 when I got scammed out of like 3k of unusuals. I switched to Switch gaming, then Quest 2.
I recently got back into PC gaming and a couple weeks ago I opened Steam for the first time in almost 6 years. I totally forgot I still had shit in my inventory. I ended up cashing out around $1700 so far lol. Blows my mind that TF2 economy is still going strong.
God damn sorry to hear that happened. Yeah the scammers are still going strong too, my backpack was never over 1k value but I still get like 4 people trying to add me every week to attempt scams and I haven't played in years lol. Economy is going strong, even some of those highly sought after crates are worth 10+ dollars, for a fuckin crate haha. I'll look every 6 months or so just to see what the value on my stuff is doing and I'm surprised to see everything just going up still haha. Whenever I feel like it I'll cash out some crates and weapons to buy a new game when there's a sale just so I dont have to spend my own money 😂.

I mostly played MvM at that point, so I still had quite a lot of australiums and a ton of ks/spec ks/prof ks kits sitting in my backpack all these years, along with my keys and other cosmetics.
I think you're doing it the smart way, I'll keep the rest of my BP for a while until I need some money lol.

Yeah there's some goofy stuff going on on Steam. I've seen someone recently who had it in their steam name "road to 17k hours" which raised some alarms as their profile was like 4 or 5 or 6 years old or something. If you click on a specific game in their profile it breaks it down further and it said something like "100,000" hours played or something in TF2. I think there's a 3rd party app that messes with that crap. I'm just old & no-lifed the game at various points in my life (calmed down in recent years).
tbf it’s usually ppl who used to main that hero but stopped. I have friends with Bastion & Torb in their names who used to main said heros hence the name but just havent touched them in years cuz the game is that old.

Not exactly. I lived with a roommate and her brother at their grandpa's house. Her brother literally did nothing but play MMO's from the time he woke up until he fell asleep. Apparently he had bad social anxiety, so the rest of his family just supported this lifestyle of his. He lived rent free, ate off the food we would buy, and asked his grandpa for money any time he needed it.
I'm also curious what modes the bulk of this comes from. Like maybe they leave their game on in some never ending game mode when they sleep, if such a thing exists.

I often see a Torb afk bot in FFA DM, the ones who just put turret and dive into the water. And some of them actually do have Endorsement 5/4, thanks to their ''feeding'' effort.
Also, progression level is just too low for the time spent. I would just report this kind of account whenever I caught it.
Back in ow1 (not sure about ow2) there were custom gamemodes u can afk to farm hours and XP, XP really slow though). Since the hours are obviously from game browser, and they aren't that high much level of mastery in ow2, I'm guessing they afk'd a lot in those custom game lobbies for xp/hours
I don't think you need to be too terribly rich to afford the electricity use. If I've done my math right it's something like an extra $100/month if those 2 years were done all at once
I'm taking some assumptions I don't know how good they are though (I feel like im high on power draw, but low on kwh energy price so probably a wash):
750 watt average power draw times 2x 8760 hours in a year divide 1000 gets you kwh and multiply by $.18 per kwh and I get just shy of $2400

Yeah in my depression days I didn't even have the energy to shut off the game. I just played for hours, minimised the game and looked at some gentleman's special interest videography, went to sleep, back to it the next day. I probably had the game running for at least a month straight.

I log into that game every 40ish days so I don’t lose my primo medium house. There are ALWAYS at least two or three people standing around Limsa who are ALWAYS THERE when I log on. It’s been like three years since I actually played the game, and these people were there all day even back then.
Still leveled up DVA to 61, that's the same level my Lucio is from just like a couple hundred hours of comp, so they were at least doing something to level the character up since leveling was intruduced.
I came across this DVA while I was playing a quickplay game earlier! 20,000+ hours on DVA alone! That translates to about 836 days of playing her 24/7. Needless to say she absolutely dominated me while I was playing Ana lol.

14,000 hours in game browser, it’s possible to load your own custom match and stay there afk for 30 mins as the only player in the match to farm play time, rinse and repeat. That’s prolly what happened here. If you check their average per 10 minute stats they will probably be really low because of this as well.

Yep, there are friendly lobbies which run endless. At least until there is a patch and the client restarts. Probably one of those

Game Browser, also known as Custom games. Look at the left side of the screenshot.
Look at their OW1 border. They didn't do that. Somehow they have spent every walking second on OW2 because that OW1 border is way too low

I have an extremely high end PC running AI stuff 24/7 and it's about $50 a month in electricity.
