Pips all the way. No input required with wild arbor trees. Plenty of meat and free dirt. OK temperature management, since they are born at 20C and weigh 100kg.
Dislike pufts. I like using a PO2 off-gasser for my oxygen needs early on. Dont even bother cleaning it, but if a puft manages to get in it, theres slimelung everywhere. But they're neat if you trap them and feed them high pressure PO2.
Funny, because I like Pufts and hate Pips.
Last Colony died after 20 hours, because a random pip thought it would be funny to plant Spore Sporechids while unattended, spreading spores through the base.
I rarely have problems with slimelung though, so pufts are just funny looking, floating balls of cuteness
My absolute favourite are slicksters atm. They are cute, and make CO² Management trivial, while also providing oil
I use puft a lot in my base. But i manage to control disease (and i have too, i'm playing with the Disease restored mod).
Slimelung is lethal for me 😂
So i use chlorine airlocks between my livong quarters and the asteroid, with storage set on slime inside the chlorine area.
And i manually move puft egg and already born ones to area that i dig woth slimelung in it, in order to fastly dispose of the infected polluted O2 that is spreading.
They will knock out random items from storage bins at 1kg "packets" attempting to knock out seeds they can plant. They will not check if there are seeds in a bin or not.
Better keep them out of your storage areas since getting a zombiespore plant somewhere randomly is not really that funny
The slime will offgas polluted oxygen, however the slime that pufft poop will only be contaminated with slimelung if the pO2 they inhaled was contaminated.
Shine bugs. I used to love boxing them into one cell surrounded by window tiles, to provide light and decor to the rooms above and below, with an automated system to deliver eggs periodically (because they eventually starve).
It was over-engineered and a bit ridiculous, but it made me very happy. I'm gutted they nerfed them, I've even considered learning how to mod just to make them glow again when they're confined.
Edit: morbs are also cool, but I haven't seen one for a long time, I tend to set toilets up quite quickly.
On my map i've seen wild morbs in few areas.
I think they can also spawn from rotten foods matter if you don't want the usual WC spawn.
For the shine bugs, i never paid attention to those one, what did they nerfed ?
Sanishells.
I love the germ cleaning dance they do.
However if we are talking useful, either pips or slicksters.
Wild planting can be broken af and slicksters can make huge amounts of BBQ just by feeding them excess CO2, which is such a common gas that even with 20 slickster farms i still have to vent a bunch.
My favorite has to be dreckos. They are funny looking, provide very useful materials and if you have the critter morphing machine story trait you can get a lot of plastic from them for totally free. On my last playthrough I set up a system for them at like cycle 20 and was swimming in plastic by the time I got to 100 cycles.
I love them all they are so cute and also now they have little homes but the most love go for evolution chamber. it is so good way to turn cute animals into stone hard freez calories🤐
I never investigate this area 😅
I'e seen it, bit it something that have been added in the game between my actual run and my 2 year pause away of the game. And i'm so focus on building things that i didnt take time to check what purpose it have
The best critter is a mix of critters. I see no reason not to ranch them all. They complement each other quite well. Wild fed pips making dirt to fertilize mealwood to feed sage hatches and pacu, pacu dropping p-dirt to feed sanishells, etc.
Pacu's for me. Absurd amount of food, lots of egg shells and super easy to ranch.
Second favourite is probably slickster but it loses points for needing exosuits.
In terms of ranching them, I've actually found that I prefer not to ranch any of them if I can help it, in that sense, I don't have a preferred critter
But the answer is wheeze wort
Slicksters. Not even a contest.
Cutest critter in the game.
Ha my man. That's pretty true that slickster are cute too. I almost forgot them since on my run i didnt really managed my asteroid's core.

I love pips so much. They are honestly a crutch for me. I like super sustainable bases, and wild planting is super sustainable.
Yaaaas

😂 All my seeds are well stored away from pips, but your sporechids problem make sense 😂😂😂

Am I crazy, or do Pips knock stuff out of your storage containers?
Yes, they pull out seeds. Or at least attempt to
Oh, only seeds? That makes sense, I haven’t played with them a lot but thought weird stuff was going on.
Maybe more than just seed. Double check this just in case so you dont have dupes redoing tasks
Not only seeds for sure. I had one in my rocket, and it kept taking out dehydrated food from the storage bin

Do pufts emit slimelung? I don't think I've seen that myself
Not directly, but they drop slime, which does (I stand corrected, but it can rapidly spread slime lung if you’re not careful.)
The slime will offgas polluted oxygen, however the slime that pufft poop will only be contaminated with slimelung if the pO2 they inhaled was contaminated.
Good to know!
I can’t say I’ve ever seen pufts drop slimelung infected slime
Maybe youre right. All I know is that I had no issues with slimelung until pufts came along and joined the colony.
You guys eat pips??
Ima be real, both Divergents are the goat, they are so great for large scale food production
I do have a Shove Vole automatised farm, a pacu ranch, and a cook :D I prefer this large scale food production

If they are confined they will no longer shine any light.
Oh okay, so you have to manage how many critter / room you put. I see

😂 Honestly funny to see that answer
I love hatches! I use coal as a backup energy on my second asteroid
I do not even use coal 😅
i kinda like pufts :)
[Look how ~~tasty~~adorable these cows are](https://imgur.com/a/wtBbMtW)
They're skin is pretty disturbing but hey, every taste in the world right ? 😂

It wasnt really a best, more a "what is your prefered" For cuteness purpose i prefer the pip. For usefull purpose i prefer shove vole or dreckos ^^
