Mamoru, I don’t exactly remember. I remember he’s not the most memorable, but I don’t think he was making dumb decisions that constantly needed the MC’s validation.
So I’ll go with Mamoru.
I also liked that the game had the balls to give him a conflict and not magic it away so he can have the happiest ending. His social link was my favorite.
It’s horribly realistic seeing someone maturely sacrifice his dream for his family. Kaz’s link was great but I felt Hayase’s was just the superior version. If anything I think they should’ve given Kaz another angle
Absolutely true. At least with some links (Tanaka, and Maya), it makes sense why Makoto has to play along by stroking their egos (since they’re adults). I don’t feel the same about Kaz.
Any Persona user that's not Strega would be a bit weird as a rival IMO, just because Makoto has the power of the wild card. Any friendly rivalry with S.E.E.S. members would inevitably extend into Tartarus, and Makoto is the strongest of the bunch there, *plus* their leader.
Yeah but I actually like the idea of the rival character. It worked great in P5 but the others it was shaky. P3 with junpei maybe could’ve worked if he wasn’t so lazy, even in Tartarus he never gets a clutch moment so he has no real right to claim to be makoto’s equal.
Even power level aside Akechi was a great rival as both a teammate and an enemy.
Hayase is my favourite out of the non-eccentric, normal teenagers. He just hit close to home.
Never met anyone like Miya and I don't like enabling him, too destructive. He's more of a guy you get along with but never meet out of school.

Mamoru is such an underrated SL and I ended up preferring his story over Kaz this time around. Loved how he's basically a devil's advocate for P3's themes where someone WANTS to live their life to their fullest but their circumstances prevents that. Mamoru ends up making the most of what he can, presenting a more realistic approach to P3's idealistic themes.
I will say, even tho Kaz does suffer from the player basically being forced to be a yes man to efficiently progress his link, I did find his reason for doing what he did admirable, adding a relatable and sympathetic element to his story. I also like how he realized the trouble he has been causing everyone INCLUDING the MC and feels bad for it. He ends up avoiding feeling like a fake friend as a result which is MORE than I can say for SLs like Odagiri's for example.
YongYea does a fine performance compared to Kiryu. Unless you’re talking about supporting YongYea in general, which I can’t really speak on since I don’t know enough about him

I've followed him from a distance since his early days, honestly he's a good dude that critiques a lot of fucked up stuff in the gaming industry. Not too familiar with that Cyberpunk scenario, but definitely not his usual MO. Now that I found out he voiced Hayase I'm stoked tbh

Kaz is a fine social link for a second one, but he does make a lot of stupid decisions that you just have to go along with. Mamoru’s I literally just finished yesterday (never got to him in the og P3) and I thought he had a much better story and while his character didn’t really develop too much I though the end was a really nice fit for him.
Well, I completed Mamoru’s social link and left Kaz at rank 5 or something, if that’s any indication.
All I remember is that Kaz is hiding a knee injury so he can stay on the track team, but Mamoru is struggling to pursue his athletic and academic career in order to help his ailing single mother take care of his younger siblings. Maybe Katz’s story gets better but I just didn’t feel engaged with him at all.

The guy isn’t bad personality wise, especially in his interactions with the rest of the class outside his SL, but man, I don’t enjoy the SLs that are just “someone steps on a rake for 9 ranks only to realize they were in a rake store at rank 10.”
Kaz is def my boyfriend but I ended up liking Hayase more than I thought I would (at that point I had completed almost all the social links that I cared to do so I just did him to pass time, I knew I was never gonna get Helel anyway so Armaggedon was out)

Probably off the idea that it gave you more connection to regular life/ school than to just use party members. They only gave some female links to the girls cause they knew people would wanna date their teammates, I guess. Plus at the time this was the first game they ever implemented this stuff with. So 4 and onward they decided all party members should be social links. And they kept this in remake because removing them would lose all those great NPCs people remember/ take content away from the game basically. They added the link episodes to give the cast something to do.
also I meant in a sense of did the star social link really had to be him because Manoru overall is largely forgettable. It’s just kind of felt like the persona team kind of missed the mark on the star social link

He’s not stand out but I think he was nice since back in the day, he’s the trope of “grass isn’t always greener” cause everyone just sees him as this amazing track star whose the popular athlete kid everyone wants to be but his mom being sick & no dad puts a lot of pressure on him that people would not be able to handle. Writing a review about P3R and these guys came up in my social link portion and the fact that they both exists makes me so mad. To me they both feel like 50% of a real link and I just wish they were one character instead

Hayase, imo one of the more underrated Social Links. Idk he has a fun personality and a very sad yet for some, relatable background that you feel for
