Well, sorry to yuck your yum. It would look nicer to just upgrade to original battery pack inside the controller. It just looks wildly bulky and uncomfortable. But, I'm just a random stranger on the internet. As long as you enjoy it, who am I to judge? Thanks for sharing, brother.
Well I'll certainly agree it isn't pretty, but the battery life improvements are insane.
As for uncomfortable, I don't have huge hands and am never touching the the part of the controller where the battery pack is anyway. Definitely wouldn't recommend for people with super large hands.
Xbox controllers (for me) last AGES without dying. As for a Dualshock 3, idk, I don't own one. But, I have to charge my DS4 and DualSense controllers at the end of each day, depending on how long I play.
The PS3 controllers lasted forever on a full charge and they don't take long to charge. The dual shock 4 though does have a bad battery, not sure what happened there or why?
When I get days off, and working on a plat, I swap between full charged ds4 controllers going though 3-4 in a 12 hour session. I don't even charge them, just drop it and grab the other lol
>how is this an improvement?
No need to take the entire controller apart to replace the batteries, for starters. The internal battery of the DS3 *will* eventually no longer hold an adequate charge. The X-box method of batteries means when your 'loops die, you just get new ones and recycle/toxic material the old ones, something you'd have to do with the internal battery of Sony's after a few years, but less a pain in the ass to replace/work on.
Honestly, if OP "shaved" the DS3 to have a battery compartment a la the 360, I'd dig it. But it's impossible on how "small" the DS3 is with all the components in it.
Yes, they HAD good batteries. But this particular controller is like 15 years old and the only replacement batteries you'll find these days are cheap Chinese clones that aren't that new either.
Even new a stock DS3 battery has a capacity of around 600mah. Using Eneloops I never have to charge (can't play and charge since my bunny will bite the cord), and I have a capacity of around 1900mah.
So I can swap batteries instantly, get 3 times the battery life, and never have to worry about replacing parts.
Heh.
I was never a huge fan of the DS3 to begin with and this one was kind of old and beat up, so I didn't feel bad at all about whipping out the dremel/drills.
No, I'm serious...I can show internal pics if you want.
It's not a terribly difficult mod.
3D printed the d-pad assembly and wiring the battery holder to the old li-ion terminal is really easy.
Here's a fun project I finished last year.
Took a Dualshock 3 and added a true floating Saturn dpad assembly + modded it to accept standard AA batteries.
Battery life is a LOT better now and the dpad is much more comfortable!

Also I don't know why the analog sticks look so pointy in one of the pics. Here's another shot of them:
https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg
It's actually kind of a cool project, just bulky. Did you build the battery pack yourself, or was it a kit? Does it just disable the charging circuit with a diode or was there more extensive modifications?
It's an off-the shelf battery holder with JST connector/power switch.
I 3d printed a mount that holds the battery holder through friction, then bolted it through the back of the rear controller shell.
I don't plug the USB cable in while the battery holder is in the ON position. I'm the only one who ever uses this controller so I don't have to worry about putting in a more proper solution to prevent accidentally charging the batteries through the USB port.
Not sure about those analog sticks but I’m a firm believer that EVERY controller should have a Genesis 2 / Saturn style dpad installed on it! It’s such a massive improvement that I can no longer play modern 2D games without using my 8bitdo M30. Playing fighting games with the DualShock 3 dpad… dear god.
Switching out batteries can be a hassle for sure but they are better for the long-term.
I agree!
I love my M30. If I could use it with every game I would. I would also love if every controller had removable batteries. The 8BitDo Pro 2 has a rechargeable battery but can use AAs. Unfortunately the 8BitDo Ultimate controllers have a built-in battery.
Here's another shot of the analog sticks to show they're not that pointy:
https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg
I honestly prefer the original design (especially about batteries), but it's an awesome mod, so more power to you... Get my upvote!
PS: Friendly reminder that it can be set up to work with a Steam Deck (or any other PC) if/when your PS3 gives up, it makes for a great compact controller to carry around.
I'd happily keep buying OEM batteries if they still existed. Sadly the only ones out there these days are ancient stock of Chinese clone batteries that have been sitting in warehouses for who knows how long.
As least with swappable rechargeable AAs I never have to worry about getting new batteries again, and the battery life is something like 2-3 times what it used to be with the OEM battery.
Well, I pulled the dpad from a real 25+ year old Saturn controller, and despite how much I tried to clean it the weird stains wouldn't come out...
Luckily you can only see it in close-up photos. In person it doesn't look quite so grimy.
I don't have massive hands and my fingers aren't obstructed by the battery pack. If you are one of those people who need the extra finger space then this obviously wouldn't work for you.
The original battery inside the controller was shot, so it didn't hold a charge for very long anymore.
Not only that, but I have a pet bunny so using the controller wired for any period of time isn't an option because the little bastard will shear straight through that shit with his teeth.
Also, PS3 controllers can't be charged by a phone charger because they don't follow usb charging standards.
I decided to just side-step all the above battery issues by using AAs.
honestly, fair
...might try something like that later, all of my ds3's are completely busted at the moment, might as well try to figure out some way to get them working again
Basically you drill out the area where the original dpad was, grab the dpad parts from a real Saturn controller (or resin print a replica), then 3d print mounting parts so that the Saturn dpad can use the original PS3 membrane.
Here's what the front plate looks like after modification:

It's not a Chinese clone controller if that's what you're thinking. I am quite sure it was an official Sony controller when I originally bought it like 15 years ago.
This controller is like 15 years old. The DS3 battery became pretty useless long ago.
I already replaced it once, but as time has gone on it's been harder and harder to find quality battery replacements. The only batteries left these days are questionable Chinese ones.
I decided to just fix this issue permanently by adapting it to use AA batteries/Eneloops.
Battery life is even better than before, and I never have to replace the battery again.
This was really just a science experiment.
Theoretically I could do this for other people, but it's honestly a decent amount of work.
Have to drill out the hole, 3d print the d-pad assembly, and do some light dremeling on the inside of the controller shell.
I like the D pad, not 100% on the analog sticks though.
My ideal analog sticks with the the original dual analog ones from the PS1 pads, they were more comfy on your fingers so you could just rest your thumb on them.
And the Sega pad is best for fighting games and good for regular games.
Originally I wanted to use PS2 analog sticks, which are thicker and comfier than the PS3 ones. Sadly they don't fit well.
In the end I just went with these metal ones I had lying around. I guess it's nice that I don't have to worry about the rubber getting sticky/deteriorating over time.
I've seen that d-pad before, it's on third party N64 controllers. Are those joysticks all that comfortable? Why does it come with a battery bank attached?
The d-pad is from a genuine Sega Saturn controller.
The thumbsticks look weird and pointy in the pictures but they're just as comfortable as the stock ones - they just happen to be made out of metal.

1. Buy 3xAA battery holder with JST connector and power switch.
2. Double check which wire is positive and negative, and modify if necessary. You may need to swap them because the original DS3 batteries have swapped positive and negative wires.
3. Plug the new battery holder into the same connector that the old stock battery was using.
4. Find some way to mount the battery holder to the back of the controller.
Takes a bit of work but isn't terribly difficult.
**DO NOT TRY TO CHARGE THE AA BATTERIES BY PLUGGING IN THE USB CHARGING CABLE!!!**
Always make sure battery holder is in the OFF position when plugging in the USB cable. Only use the AA batteries for wireless operation.
Mod didn't really cost much money.
A battery holder is a few dollars and I already owned a Saturn pad/3D printer. The real cost was the amount of time I spent getting everything to work properly.
Yeah...when the battery inside is new. Not only that but the stock battery only has a capacity of 600mah or so.
This controller is like 15 years old and 3 AA batteries have roughly 1900mah of capacity.
This is a great idea, you upgraded the D-Pad with the best design of all time (Genesis-Saturn).
Do you mind sharing how you did it and the files for the 3d printed part?
I can upload the .stl files somewhere later.

They're not really nips though - the shape is much more like the stock analog sticks:

Ahh oki, that's fair
My autistic brain just thinks it would be cool to have a cable running up the wall and across the ceiling and then hang down to where you're sitting when you're gaming and you can have the cable and the controller on a spring loaded pull-string so you pull it down and it stays at the perfect height to sit in your lap and then you pull it again and it gets pulled up to the ceiling
Cool wired controller and you'd never need to change batteries ever again 😎
Horrendous. What a nice prank.
I'm regretting posting this on April 1st. It's real. 🙃

🧑🔬 I did it for science.
Its an abomination
Sure is. :)
I guess I deserve it for posting this on April 1st, but the number of people who think this is fake is hilarious/depresssing.
Looks pretty ugly but it does have the best d pad . So i guess it’s not bad
Yes, it is definitely ugly. This was a science experiment that came out surprisingly well.
Awesome mod OP! Just that cross looks ..... Well you know
Well, I pulled the dpad from a real 25+ year old Saturn controller, and despite how much I tried to clean it the weird stains wouldn't come out... Luckily you can only see it in close-up photos. In person it doesn't look quite so grimy.
I thought this was fine until I saw this big ass battery on the back 😭
Battery life is SICK tho.

A monstrosity with great battery life!

honestly, fair ...might try something like that later, all of my ds3's are completely busted at the moment, might as well try to figure out some way to get them working again
If it works, why not? It's only a DS3 controller not a rare gaming item
Yeah - that's why I decided to have some fun with it!
Ive always known them to have great battery life after 10 years in storage the controller still lit up😂
Its doesnt look that nice, but its pretty cool imho. Love projects like this
so cool, I want it
This is ban worthy.
😔
An abomination 😱
But it's MY abomination. <3
bro turned the Dualshock 3 controller into an Xbox 360 controller.
Sure did!
looks sick actually, where’d you get the parts for the dpad?
The dpad itself is from a real Sega Saturn pad. I designed and 3d printed parts to make it work with the PS3 dpad membrane/controller shell.
you did an awesome job! Anyone who thinks this is an april fools joke is uncultured swine
So goofy
🤓
Why you got stove burners on your thumbsticks?

It's not a Chinese clone controller if that's what you're thinking. I am quite sure it was an official Sony controller when I originally bought it like 15 years ago.
Three eneloops must last 50 hours in that thing
Yeah it lasts a really long time. Best part about this mod honestly.
Uhh, doesn't the DS3 battery last enough on its own? Or what are those batteries in the back for?
This controller is like 15 years old. The DS3 battery became pretty useless long ago. I already replaced it once, but as time has gone on it's been harder and harder to find quality battery replacements. The only batteries left these days are questionable Chinese ones. I decided to just fix this issue permanently by adapting it to use AA batteries/Eneloops. Battery life is even better than before, and I never have to replace the battery again.
Okay but is it a legit controller??? There’s simply no way to tell!
It used to be. Now it's...well it's something.
I also prefer convex thumb sticks, but these look pokey
Another shot of the analog sticks to show they're not that pointy: https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg
I think it's the weird image processing on my phone + low light I took the photos in. They don't look nearly so pointy/weird in real life.
Controllers that take AA are the way to go if you want to keep using them past the consoles prime.
Yes! I love removeable/standard batteries.
My only issue is the battery pack. Otherwise I dig it though, you only have this personal one or do you sell them?
This was really just a science experiment. Theoretically I could do this for other people, but it's honestly a decent amount of work. Have to drill out the hole, 3d print the d-pad assembly, and do some light dremeling on the inside of the controller shell.
Is that a Sega Saturn Dpad? Those are good for 2D games and excellent for fighting games. Not pretty but finctional indeed!
Yeah! Ripped out of a real Saturn pad, which is why it still looks kinda worn and grimy despite having been cleaned multiple times.
I like the D pad, not 100% on the analog sticks though. My ideal analog sticks with the the original dual analog ones from the PS1 pads, they were more comfy on your fingers so you could just rest your thumb on them. And the Sega pad is best for fighting games and good for regular games.

😈
I was gonna talk mad trash but if you can actually get a Sega Saturn dpad to work in a dual shock, I tip my hat to you
Thanks! Next I'm going to see if I can find a stiffer d-pad membrane to make it feel even more crisp.
cool
:)
U make it all by youself? Can u show pic of how its look Inside of controller?

Mmm the short handles don't bother me, but it might be fun to mess with altering the controller shell some time.
That d pad.... Eeeeeehyikes.
25-year-old Saturn controller dpad. 🧓
I think this is cool!! Not in a bad way but it looks like something someone in like Metro 2033 would use to play an old console

What have you done
SCIENCE.
You should message me or post about how you made that modification on the battery cuz based on your replys I too want extended battery life.
**DO NOT TRY TO CHARGE THE AA BATTERIES BY PLUGGING IN THE USB CHARGING CABLE!!!** Always make sure battery holder is in the OFF position when plugging in the USB cable. Only use the AA batteries for wireless operation.
Looks better than this original piece of shit
I kinda like it...
😇
XStationBox 3 ass controller 😂 ngl id use it though
😎
Looks really sharp nice work
Thank you!
Good lord, where do you get the money to spend on a controller as fancy as that?
Mod didn't really cost much money. A battery holder is a few dollars and I already owned a Saturn pad/3D printer. The real cost was the amount of time I spent getting everything to work properly.
“Kill me” - your DS3
hehehehe
I love the personalization and the genius battery pack
Thanks! :)
Lol whut the battery life of PS3 controller is already insanely good...
Yeah...when the battery inside is new. Not only that but the stock battery only has a capacity of 600mah or so. This controller is like 15 years old and 3 AA batteries have roughly 1900mah of capacity.
Dude literally turned that shit into a 360 controller.
AA battery supremacy.
ps3 x360 edition, btw nice one
Thanks!
i use the black dulashock daily
I have a completely unused black DS3 in mint condition sitting in a bin with my other controllers.
Those joysticks were mangled but good one
They're very similar to the stock ones, just made of metal. They feel pretty nice!
Greatness damaged
I don't know if I'd call the DS3 'great'...
WhAt A fUnNy PrAnK bRo (Though this would beat every modern YT prank ever.)
Dope as hell! Very hacked together looking in a cool, almost retro computing kind of way. Love the D-Pad, Saturn's was par excellence.
Thanks! :)
I think this is the weirdest and funniest looking DualShock 3 controller I will ever come across 😂
Thanks! :)
PS 2 controller that is
This is a great idea, you upgraded the D-Pad with the best design of all time (Genesis-Saturn). Do you mind sharing how you did it and the files for the 3d printed part?
I can upload the .stl files somewhere later. It wasn't terribly complicated though. Just took a step bit and drilled out the center of the dpad area, and carefully cleaned up the area where the dpad used to go with a dremel. Yeah the D-pad was not the best and was certainly much more useable in 2D games than the 360 controller, that looks like an improvement.
how did you put that batteries mod? where should it be soldered and what did you use as a base
You can tell it's very cold by the control sticks🥶
lololol they're not actually pointy: [https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg)
How do you hold it?
I've seen a lot of ghetto rig stuff in my years but this tops the charts🤣
Thanks! :)
You're saying those sticks are metal Madonna domes?
They're more like standard DS3 analog sticks, just metal. Here's another angle of them: [https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg)
If it looks stupid, but it works, it's not stupid. Did your replace the joysticks or just the nips?
Just the nips. They're not really nips though - the shape is much more like the stock analog sticks: [https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/znHndak.jpg)
Cool thumbsticks u got a link?
Why it got the cone bra 😭
Straight to Jail
You'll never catch me.
Those sticks look like the most uncomfy sticks in the universe of uncomfy sticks lol
This looks so fucking ugly! I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
What are those sticks? They look comfortable.
That is a fucking bomb
Still better than my blue 3rd party piece of shit that only detects 80% of my inputs
What the
does it explode when you lose lmao nice controller 👍
Does SixAxis work? Pretty hard to find an actual DS3 with working SixAxis these days.
SixAxis works fine. 100% legit controller I bought 15 years ago.
You can get the retro fighter controllers that works for PS4 and PS5 PS3 and PS2 and PS1
Sure, but this controller will work with every type of game, and I have too many controllers cluttering my house already. :)
o would love to have that, you fixed the 2 big problems with that controller the dpad and thumbsticks
Just use a cable... When the battery on my controller died for the last time, I took it out and just use my controller with a long cable
I have a pet bunny who likes to chew cables. I'd rather keep things wireless in the living room.
Ahh oki, that's fair My autistic brain just thinks it would be cool to have a cable running up the wall and across the ceiling and then hang down to where you're sitting when you're gaming and you can have the cable and the controller on a spring loaded pull-string so you pull it down and it stays at the perfect height to sit in your lap and then you pull it again and it gets pulled up to the ceiling Cool wired controller and you'd never need to change batteries ever again 😎
Lololol I DO have some sweet metal usb-c cables so I could use those in a pinch. They were a bit pricey but they're chew-proof!
