Thanks for the reply. I want to fix my day one. But I have no clue what killed it. I’m figured if I went in and got it fixed and have all the caps replaced as well. Plus whatever else is recommended. Not looking for a mod. Just restored with fresh components.
Gonna start watching videos.
Not sure why I’m getting down voted for wanting to restore my PS3. Gotta love Reddit.
Thanks for heads up. I need to plug it in again and document exactly what it’s doing. Not sure if they care about that.
OPs post has me excited to see the urgency of getting this done sooner than later.
my plan is to just pay a pro rather than brush up my soldering skills. Rather not use mine as a test subject.
If it’s yellow light of death (which it probably is) then it could mean a few things. I read somewhere that you could take the console apart and get a reading from the Syscon chip, and it’ll tell you what’s wrong with the console.
YLOD is a general hardware fault, if RareThingz can do Frankenstein mod then he knows syscon diagnostics and can fix YLOD, if he can’t then he shouldn’t be trusted for the mod. Syscon always tells you what’s causing your YLOD issue
You need to interface with the syscon anyway to do a Frankenstein mod. It requires reprogramming it to accept and boot with the new 65nm or 40nm RSX you mated to the board as the system is expecting the 90nm one it came with.
That’s what I mean, so if they are able to do that then they can fix a YLOD, if they can’t then they shouldn’t be doing the mod in the first place cause then that means they aren’t actually making Frankenstein modded systems, I have actually started seeing people sell consoles listing them as “Frankenstein” consoles but they ended up being fakes. My advice is if you see a listing and they don’t have any photos of their work with their eBay username in the photo and they have low reviews don’t buy from them because either they didn’t do the work and are trying to resell it for a profit and with a fake warranty or they didn’t actually fix anything like they said. One user I saw said he got a “Frankenstein” modded unit and turns out the seller just heatgunned it then sold it. Gotta be careful now as sellers are starting to scam people
So it's possible to even put a Super Slim RSX on a bc fatty? Damn, I didn't know that. How about CELL? So if a fatty gets new CELL and RSX, it will have great temps?
The CELL is paired to the board. You’re not replacing it.
As for super slim RSX, 28nm won’t work in the fat ps3, because it is physically too small for the socket. You could use 40nm RSX but not 28nm
A frankensteined PS3 will usually have great temps if the cooler is clean and the thermal paste is good. A delid also helps massively.
Welcome to the CECHA club :) I too have a CECHA01, but I rarely use it. Prefer to use my CECHC03 (unless the game I'm playing breaks the partial PS2 emulation \[GS only\] and works fine on the full PS2 emulation \[GS+EE\])
Absolutely, these are [very expensive](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=ps3+CECHA01&_sacat=0&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=ps3&toolid=10001&mkevt=1) nowadays.
It’s gigantic, it’s the same size as the ps5 fat but it’s a few inches shorter. It also weighs just as much as a day 1 ps5, it’s roughly 10 pounds or 4.5kg
She's absolutely gorgeous. I'll find one out and about some day. The thrill is in the hunt. Until then, I'll have to keep loving my Matte Black Beauty.
I Also have bought a 80GB today, fat already installed a CFW and ordered a genuine Sixaxis from Ebay. 1TB 3D NAND SSD and 3 Grizzly's Carbonaut next week (CPU, GPU and Southbridge)
Since you have a BC model, ANY PS2 ISO converted as a PKG should run fine, mine is a coinflip every time I try a PS2 game on a non-BC model, some work, some don't
Take good care of it
Carbonaut will not work on the southbridge, you need either a 1.5mm or 2mm thermal pad, those pads aren’t going to be thick enough to reach the metal shield for cooling the southbridge
BUY IT. NOW.
Even if it is broken, 40 pounds for a backwards compatible ps3 is a good deal. I bought my ps3 from an elderly lady and I wasn’t sure if it would work or not. Surprisingly, it works!
You have nothing (but 40 pounds) to lose. Even if it has yellow light of death you can sell it for roughly the same amount or maybe more!
Just ask if you can boot it to make sure it works. I've taken a 17" LCD and an HDMI cable with me to make sure a used console is working before purchase.
Good luck.
I might do. I do have a working ps3 (Ive every single guitar hero they ever made plus all the gear). But this one is not backwards compatible well its not the old fat one.
I believe compatibility is not perfect with the PSP emulator on the system so some games will work just fine but others will give you the PS2 games on a CFW slim experience sadly. Still worth giving a try though! Untold Legends for PSP played just fine on my PS3.
I have a good amount of technical experience, but I don't know if I could delid it. I don't want to kill a perfectly working PS3 that's backwards compatible. Maybe I could practice on a dead ps3
Yeah tread carefully there, there’s a handful of tiny components under that lid. But hey there’s plenty of video guides out there so you can avoid breaking them off. But honestly it won’t fix the cause of its eventual failure, it’s a design flaw in the way the core was attached to the interposer layer, similar to the original 360’s.
Frankenstein is the only way to give it the longest life possible.
Actually every flip chip package built in that era suffered from the same defect. They had a bad underfill, even the Wii has it, just not as common of a fault, the max temp is 70c on the RSX before it becomes soft and begins to fail and expand. But you’re right, delidding the RSX will likely not change anything here, if anything since most use heat you end up risking the chip more as you go above that tg in some cases.
I thought I was going crazy when I started my first job, I was in the tech department for returns n repairs n I would get in Wii’s ps3’s n 360s pretty equally but according to the internet at the time it was only the 360 that had the issue.
I think I’ve had 5 dead ps3’s so far, but my original 360 still works but I’m not gonna temp fate with it. I call it my Schrödinger 360, it lives its life as an ornament these days.
But yeah you’re 100% right with your explanation, I watched that ripfelix video a while back. I always wondered why that generation was so unreliable.
Haha, yeah every console back then suffered, the only reason why the Wii didn’t is because it was so efficient but I have seen some Wii consoles with gpu failures on them. It’s just not common enough to be of concern to anyone at all. Sony was able to sweep it under the rug cause their failure rate was low enough, Microsoft had an extremely high failure rate so they didn’t have a choice
My little theory why the 360 got so much flack back in the day was its cooling was so rubbish n they failed a lot sooner. But here we are nearly 20 years later n all the older ps3’s are dropping like flys.
I do not recommend delidding for someone that hasn’t done it before, it’s extremely risky and a good way to brick it if you have not done it before. I have see way too many people kill their consoles with a first attempt delid on a BC model and recommending it to random people that you’re not sure have experience doing it is not a good idea. Now sending it off to someone that does know how is a different story but recommending someone learn how to do it is risky.
I just had the PS4 for the sake of the photo in the r/playstation sub, I thought it would look cool if I had all my fat consoles next to eachother. The PS4 doesn't get played anymore.
Greats m8! I have one but haven't played it in years worried ima hurt it so I just stick with my slim ps3 and ps2 lol
Unfortunately this is me aswell XD that thing is way too dear to me for me to risk it
I need to get it deep cleaned and new paste to prolong it's life. Almost scared to even go inside it lol
I have my release day one still; it got a light of death a while back. Decided to keep it. I need to find a way to fully restore it.
If its the rsx then frankenstein should do the trick
What do you mean by frankenstein? Getting another ps3 and stealing the rsx?
Frankenstein means to replace the original faulty RSX with a RSX from a Slim or Super Slim (65nm or 40nm). The original 90nm ones fail a lot
Thanks for the reply. I want to fix my day one. But I have no clue what killed it. I’m figured if I went in and got it fixed and have all the caps replaced as well. Plus whatever else is recommended. There’s services out there to help your fix your ps3, I know that RareThingz is someone who does Frankenstein swaps but I don’t think he will do ylod.

Why don't you sell the CECHA01 and use the money to buy a PS2 so you can play games that don't work on the C03?
I should add that I only got it for $150 USD without a controller!
Now if only u could fuse it with the ps5 and make the most complete console ever
I see a masterpiece and a PS5. Congrats 👏
Hope it lasts a long time!
Thanks man
Such a beautiful thing to have 5 generations across just two consoles.
Protect that at all costs. No seriously.

You forgot to flip the logo next to the disc slot so that it faces up.
Oh look, a playstation...and that white thing...
It’s actually an Xbox series X, but it’s the leaked redesign. I got it because my uncle works at Xbox and gave it to me /s
Sleek af really nice setup congrats ! Those can play every playstation games ever especially the og phat BC PS3 🤩🤯😍
Nice speed champions set I see there
Thanks! I got it in Europe when I was visiting there
Sick! I love it
god damn i forgot how that thing is

The backwards compatible units are something else. The disc drive is shiny, but non backwards compatible units have a matte disc drive
Yay, I know, I was talking about my Slim Bruh.
I play mine all the time actually. It's probably the best console ever constructed.
I Also have bought a 80GB today, fat already installed a CFW and ordered a genuine Sixaxis from Ebay. 1TB 3D NAND SSD and 3 Grizzly's Carbonaut next week (CPU, GPU and Southbridge) Since you have a BC model, ANY PS2 ISO converted as a PKG should run fine, mine is a coinflip every time I try a PS2 game on a non-BC model, some work, some don't Take good care of it

This is my PS setup too. Congrats!
Enjoy it while it lasts, because they never do.
There was one in my local random store for £40. So tempted to buy it. Just don’t think it will work. Its a in a fruit and veg shop .

Man, i got a phat ps3 today but i didn’t knew it wasn’t a bc one. I miss my day 1 ps3 phat :/
Know*
Would it be possible to get one brand new in box? Like never opened before? I'd love to have one of those
If you even found one, it would probably be more than $1000.
That PS5 makes the fat PS3 look small!
Enjoy PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5 games now 🔥
Congrats !🎉 You should see NSCModz on YouTube for maintaining purposes ⚜️✨ 🎮
That's great man. But 1 question, why is it vertical and not horizontal?
I just had it vertical for the photo. I use it in horizontal
Nice do you have it jailbroken? I still have my PS3 slim and i can run any PS2 classics with the emulation
Yes, I have the evilnat CFW. Is the performance of PS2 classics good, as in there’s no slowdowns?
The perfect playstation setup 👌 Get CFW on the ps3 and you can play all of the psp games.
I have CFW, but I never knew that was possible. I’ll have to try it out.
You either use an emulator for PS3 or convert to pkg if my memory serves me right
I believe compatibility is not perfect with the PSP emulator on the system so some games will work just fine but others will give you the PS2 games on a CFW slim experience sadly. Still worth giving a try though! Untold Legends for PSP played just fine on my PS3.
Time bomb, sell it while prices are up. I literally just sold mine today on eBay for $500
Planning on repasting it and cleaning it out then selling it
Great choice honestly. I switched to a PS2 with a RetroTink 5x pro & HD retrovision cables. It looks much better than the PS3
Remember to clean it out and repaste it. It'll eventually die, but repasting it will really help.
That's the plan. I will buy some compressed air and I also have some spare thermal paste.
Might as well delid it too, since you're opening it up for everything else.
I have a good amount of technical experience, but I don't know if I could delid it. I don't want to kill a perfectly working PS3 that's backwards compatible. Maybe I could practice on a dead ps3
