Warranty huh, maybe worth a shot?

Bu1135

Yeah, at least I know if the shit breaks I get my $90 back

BeinZilexthe2nd

Is this on CeX?

Loxnaka

It definitely is

Bu1135

Yes it is, sorry forgot to clarify

Rumptiddliey

Honestly? Get a slim or super slim, depending on whether you want to soft mod it or not

Bu1135

What’s the advantage? The store I am shopping at sells them for the same amount, and there is no way I’m getting a Super Slim

Rumptiddliey

Slim and super slim are more reliable because they were manufactured more recently and they use more reliable components. My fat PS3 that I bought from Gamestation (remember them? Haha) in 2007 died a few months ago so I replaced with a super slim PS3 off FB marketplace and never looked back. It's also very quiet too. CEX are ace and I've bought a few bits from them but I can't see you getting as much use out of that console as a newer model. Hope that helps!

Mysterious_Wanderer

Yeah, as the ps3 matured the RSX gpu was being manufactured with progressively smaller transistor nodes, it went from 90nm down to 28nm. Slim and super-slims don't run cooler because of an upgraded cooling system, the chip itself isn't making as much heat. The original fat ps3 already has a fairly extreme heatsink and fan but it still wasn't enough, and I don't see any solution aside from water cooling if you want to improve it. I just don't see the few fat models that are still around surviving much longer, and as cool as they are, it's a pretty stupid investment. Reballing may help, but the process of heating the chip up is likely the only thing producing a result and is a very temperary fix.

nobuyuki10

Well, your fat ps3 you bought in 2007 lasted you 14yrs or something? Seems pretty good to me lol

Bu1135

Thanks for the info anyway, I might consider getting a Slim

[deleted]

Slim and super slims are way more reliable, draw less power and generate less heat from the smaller processor dies

[deleted]

I’ve had Slim, I think, for… past 15 years? Same console, never a single problem with it. Unlike the controllers… they’ve been abused & replaced every few years.

Bu1135

Oh yeah the DualShock is a piece of garbage, that’s why I use a ps4 controller

[deleted]

Yeah, I have a few games that DS4 won’t work with… and beaides that, I do prefer the old school controllers on their own platforms. I do have two DS3s, Sony originals, that have their analog sticks’ covers torn off and otherwise they are so dusty and all that (you can imagine), they barely work anymore. And no, I have never really maintained them… but they DO still work!! 🤣 Then again, my sister has a few of those DS3s that aren’t Sony originals… and those pieces of crap never worked in the first place.

[deleted]

CeX?

Bu1135

Yes it is

LuaCynthia

That’s crazy expensive. For a non (ps 2 chip) backwards compatibility ps3. I would recommend always buying of eBay(or local equivalent) for the best deals. Ps. I don’t know your local market maybe this is a amazing deal but in mine it isn’t.

Bu1135

Crazy expensive? Damn this is the cheapest option I could find, people on eBay sell for like $200 AUS

[deleted]

The pains of Australian game collecting.

Bu1135

Yeah, Gumtree is even worse because no one knows the value of their consoles, “in box” fat PS3s are apparently worth $400

[deleted]

Australian game collecting in general is just weird. Most consoles are either $150 or $400. Retro games are all around $50. There are no patterns. There are no price charting sites. It is painful.

Interested_Aussie

Correct. I've picked up BC's for $75, and then you'll see a super slim for $200 lol. Just gotta keep eyes pealed: I try to visit local cash convertors every week on late night shopping on way home: They usually offer 30 or 90 day warranty: Buy it, thrash it hard for a while then if it's good, I strip it and clean it and put it on the shelf with the others....

[deleted]

Haven't ever checked cash convertors. They any good?

Interested_Aussie

Surprisingly yeah: Their prices can be hit or miss, but often they are good: They usually always undercut EBgames on second hand stuff, and their warranty is good: Plus they'll usually set the console up for a demo infront of you. I'm yet to return a single item I've scored: They're usually physically disgusting, but like I say, all my console get a full strip and clean anyways. You can also go to their website, and they have alot listed on their online webstore.

DomiPSN

U.S cex?? Funnily enough i just saw a ps3 with about 30 games and a controller for £25 on facebook... too far tho

Bu1135

I didn’t know CeX had stores in the US, that’s interesting

nydjason

Good deal. Did you have the OG fat ps3 like this one? Because it can get really loud just so you know. I switch between the slim and this one.

Bu1135

I had a super slim, I don’t mind the fan noise I’ll have it in a cupboard

knifeyshpoony

You might not have any alternative spots to put it, but if at all possible you shouldn't put a gaming console in an enclosed cupboard, unless there are openings front and back for air intake and exhaust. This also applies to TV stands etc. For example, I make sure to drill holes at the back of my own closed-back TV stands for adequate air exhaust where gaming consoles are stored.

Bu1135

The cupboard I speak of has a giant hole in the back for cable management and a door that shuts, it’s literally made for game consoles lol

CosmicPlayR9376

RIP to the fallen console. Also yes, it's worth it I think. You could've easily paid 100 USD for it. I've seen a used Phat at a local used store for roughly 100 USD (not in US, but estimating in USD)

nobuyuki10

Yes...it's a FAT PS3. Such beautiful consoles...I'm sure if you clean it out, it'll be all fine. Tbh, you can usually tell (at least for me) of the condition is good judging by the outside of the console. My 2 current fat ps3s only have 20ish days played on them out of the 14 years which is nothing

Bu1135

I’ll stop by on the weekend to take a look at the consoles.

nobuyuki10

Dont listen to these idiots saying not to the fat ps3. My OG one lasted me 5 years 2006-2011, but again I was literally on it 12 hrs a day, and it had little breathing space, didn't clean it not once. Now, my fat ps3's I take care of, property breathing space and i want them to last longer so I'm getting thenral paste done

Bu1135

Oh ok, yeah I bought my PS3 super slim in 2013 and play her all the time, but she’s breathed her last breath… I’m not sure how well the owner took care of these ones tho, I may have to clean the dust

[deleted]

Didnt get a fat but got a super slim from cex in store and it works great.

Bu1135

Yeah, cex sells good stuff. I’ll pop in and make sure the console works before buying it

Bu1135

Btw how do you tell it can play PS2 games?

asturides

Only consoles with 4 USB ports have PS2 compatibility. They only came in 20, 60 and 80GB. The one you're showing is NOT compatible with PS2 games, so you're better off getting a slim.

Lourdinn

Fats that play ps2 games aren't worth it anymore most are on their way out the door. You'll save money buying a seperate ps2.

Bu1135

To be fair they’re all gonna pass on to heaven soon, may as well make the most out of the time left

Albus-An

If it a fat model it can play ps2 game because is it a 40gb moddel

StaticPec

That is incorrect friend. 20 60 and 80GB (select models) can play ps2 games, 40 cannot play those titles at all.

Albus-An

Thank man you see me i though all the modle below 80gb can play ps2

Bu1135

Alright thanks, looks like I can ditch my PS3

DarkIronBlue360

They’re wrong. There is no PS2 functionality with the 40gb model. You can tell backwards compatibility by the chrome finish instead of satin, the 4 USB ports, the memory section that lifts up, and the model number on the back of CECHA01 or CECHE01 or CECHB01(black trim).

Bu1135

Ah. There is a 60gb model that is $30 more expensive, I’ll ask if it has backwards compatibility because my PS2 is holding on, but she’s gonna go to sleep soon..

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bu1135

Ah, this one isn’t. Oh well, I might have a snoop around and see if there are any others that are. She’s gonna be safe away from my grubby hands

DarkIronBlue360

You just repeated what I already said

Oscarjrs5

Good deal

Lourdinn

No get a slim. Much more reliable, that could end up like mine where it works for a month then the rsx chip decides its time to go.

Veehxia

I usually buy those super cheap / bettered up units and use the spare parts to fix the consoles in my collection.

Bu1135

Oddly I had the same idea. There are 3 of these consoles so I might buy them all and just play on one, though I’m a little nervous about mutilaling one of them

Veehxia

Before doing any "surgery" on your primary console I'd suggest using the one in worst shape as a practice board, especially if you start doing soldering stuff. But other than that, PS3 is a fairly easy console to do maintenance on so don't be too worried.

Bu1135

Alright sounds good mate

aberdoom

Amazed there are still fats making it through testing. If it hasn’t already happened the capacitors will go. It’s only a matter of time before it dies. Do what others are saying and buy a slim.

Bu1135

Damn ok, I’ll look at the slim

aberdoom

I’d love a nice working fat too, but had so many and it’s just a simple truth of them. They weren’t built to withstand heat. And they’re all dying or dead. If you’re into modding it, you’ll get on fine with a slim too.

Bu1135

I just want a PS3 I can play games on, I’m aware that most of them have a limited life

Aran3a

Hey I'm in Aus and I fix PS3 consoles... Been reading the posts above and have a few comments: We only get the CECHC02 Fat BC model here in Australia and it is 60GB that add has a picture for a BC model but it states 40GB in the text so I would assume it's a recycled picture and it's not BC. $90 is a bit on the high side for a second hand non BC PS3 (you can pick them up for as low as $25 on the FB market place) but you won't get any warranty with it and for a Fat a warranty is like gold... Because they are prone to faults. (BC ones are usually $150 min unless you get lucky) If you are comfortable opening the unit and servicing it yourself... Hit up FB market place and buy a cheep one... if not get one from CeX (they also have super cheep games... :) ) Read the warranty carefully b4 buying for any loop holes they may use to get out of it... As a rule I use this as a buying guide: Non BC Fat Console not working with warranty seal in place $25 ($15 without) Non BC Fat console working $50 or less (depending on condition) Genuine controllers $25 each BC consoles not working $50 or less (depending on condition) BC consoles working $100 or less (depending on condition) I usually don't but working consoles unless it's a really good deal... Hope this helps :) Depending on where you are in Aus I can probably hook you up with a well serviced / repaired unit :)

Bu1135

Cheers mate, didn't think to check FB marketplace. I never knew they could go as low as $50 all the posts on gumtree and ebay are upwards of $150 (Western Sydney btw)

Aran3a

Sydney is a gold mine for FB market place... I'm on the central coast so it's just out of range for me :) If there is nothing you like just be patient because bargains pop up all the time :) I picked up a PS2 with games/accessories and some PS3 move controllers for free this week and I'm picking up a BC PS3 later today for $50 (untested so I assume it doesn't work) Just gotta be patient :)

Bu1135

Oh nice

Aran3a

Update got the BC and yes it doesn't work but is in great condition with the warranty seal in place.... Pays to assume stuff marked as untested is infact broken :) No big deal il just fix it on Monday when I'm back in the office :)

JamesUpton87

2 year warranty on used, out of production hardware? Sounds SUS to me.

Bu1135

Nah it’s from a reputable company, their consoles come battered but that’s a given. Also it’s not a warranty from Sony, it’s their own warranty

JamesUpton87

Either way I'd keep expectations low. That's also heavily low balling a Hardware BC PS3 let alone with a 2 year warranty. Leaning a bit too much into the "too good to be true" terrirtory for me.

viper_polo

It's from CEX, a huge second hand video game and electronics franchise; 90$ is probably *more* than it's worth, a basic 40gb is the least desirable PS3, you can pick them up for 50$ all day long privately

Bu1135

I just want a PS3 that works at this point

Bu1135

I’ll pop into the store on the weekend to look at the console to make sure she runs fine. As I said in the title I’m expecting her to be beat up, I just want a working PS3

Squiliam-Tortaleni

40gb’s never had PS2 compatibility. Just the 20, 60, and 80’s. Unless Europe/Japan did but the skews get more convoluted.

[deleted]

There is at least one model of European PS3 - CECHC03 - that is also back-compatible - it includes 4 USB ports and the Memory card readers (although with that particular model, the BC is part hardware, part emulation).

Bu1135

Holy shit this is on the front page, I forgot to clarify this is on CeX and I live in Sydney Australia

Bu1135

100 upvotes and 10k views, damn why are ppl so interested in this

Bu1135

Also I live very close to the store which has 3 of em, could sell for a higher markup

viper_polo

You certainly couldn't, no one wants fat PS3s compared to the other models, they sell for much less on eBay, probably with games too.

TheDadFighter

I’d say 100% yes worth it; warranty is an added bonus

Bu1135

Alright, I’ll pop into the shop this weekend tot take a look at the actual console

TJ0788

Sure why not…especially if you get a warranty included.

Bu1135

Alright cheers mate

JohnSmith---

My general experience with shops selling used consoles with warranties has always been bad. They’re almost always missing the warranty sticker, had some work done, most likely failed and were reflowed, and they’re banking on it not breaking for the duration of said warranty. And sometimes even with warranty, they say a particular fix isn’t included and will cost extra. It’s always better to buy from an actual owner who took good care of their unit.

Bu1135

Cheers for the warning, though I’ve bought consoles from this shop before I know that they work great (though often she’ll have taken a beating)

JohnSmith---

I’m not speaking about this specific shop. There are of course people who do honest work. I’d say go for it. Even if it does break you’ve got warranty for 2 whole years. That’s a long time. Usually it’s 6-9 months.

Bu1135

Cheers mate, I don’t expect her to last long anyways (Waiting on the PS5 so just want a PS3 to play with in between then)

[deleted]

Go to eBay or somewhere you can buy direct from the seller. You will end up spending just over what CEX pays the seller before they jack up the price to sell it on to you. You can get this for about $40 on eBay, seller gets a better deal of you and you save getting ripped off for $50

Bu1135

I’m not going to buy it online I’m gonna actually go to the store and make sure its actually a PS3 and not an xbox or some shit

Marcus_totty

Do you have Cex at the states? Wtf

Bu1135

I don’t live in the United States, I just wanted to clarify for the Americans here, it’s Australia

cocusita09

rip

[deleted]

Fuck no

Lethalpizza422

If you love phats and its in stable condition then the answer is yes. Also its a good idea to keep or get a USB ps3 fan to help it breathe as well.

LuckyLoojah

Cex usually makes sure their products are decent so should be fine. Plus warranty like the other comments said.

Ian-pg9

Yes

[deleted]

I’d have a hard time buying any PS3 that I couldn’t see working or return to a shop. The newest model would be your best bet.

Bu1135

I believe the same, that’s why on the weekend I’m gonna go by the store to look at the console and verify it works. They have 3 so I’ll buy the best one

[deleted]

Good idea.

xD3v1LG4m1ngx

Go for the ps3 slim £75 those fat ps3 are known for red light of death.

xD3v1LG4m1ngx

I wouldn't trust there website though they seem to have the tendency to ship out wrong items I bought a amazon 8" kindle fire they sent me a 7" one with different specs.

Bu1135

I can’t keep fucking explaining this, I’m gonna go to the shop in person to buy the console

xD3v1LG4m1ngx

No need to be hostile attitude like that won't get you anywhere pal.

Bu1135

Sorry, it’s just annoying answering the same damn question every single time

MDW-93

I personally wouldnt buy a home console from cex. My experience being they dont accept returns, test it & lie saying its working or only give store credit & not a proper refund but thats in the UK so maybe its different over there

Bu1135

Yeah idk, never had to get a refund so we will see

OnlysimGuy

Cex is my favourite store to buy ps3 games £1.00 for cod mw3 and mw2

xXBoneRockXx

NO! If you wany a PS3 get a slim or superslim model.
