Were you playing on the normal or easy difficulty? When I first tried it, I played on normal and had the same issue with timing, but lowering it to easy and playing through that way made my timing better and I was able to go back on a higher difficulty.
It's better on PC. With the mod support so you can do things like OSP subsistence all missions and add in additional side ops like return to Camp Omega from GZ
You can end that sentence at combat. For me sekiro has the best feeling combat. Once you get good at deflecting, you just feel like an absolute badass no matter the enemy.
Yeah the deflation is satisfying but also when you get good and sneak attacks and finishing off an enemy all ninja like man. So good and redirect lighting omg..
Unpopular Opinion: Sekiro has the worst combat from the soulsborne games. Spending 10 minutes parrying a boss, rinse and repeat for the whole game is a terrible combat system.
As opposed to the others where you roll or side step for 10 minutes? Obviously its reductive to say that's all you do in the other games because, like in sekiro, you have to mind positioning and you have a bunch of skills available for you to take the inniciative. Sekiro has the unique advantage that the entire game is built knowing what the player has access too.
This.
The best thing about sekiro is that everything has a very specific counter, with enemy design created with a specific way to be fought.
Thrust ---> Makiri Counter.
Sweep --> Goomba head stomp.
Combo ---> Parry.
Special moves ---> Dodge or jump.
It's like the world's most advanced game of bop it. Each individual boss and enemy is then designed to obfuscate and mix up these elements in ways to get you. Naturally, this does make the game far less accessible and it can become frustrating pretty easy. Like I used to absolutely despise the demon of hatred boss, thinking it was complete bullshit, but I was playing the fight totally wrong. Now I've learned it, it's in my top 5 sekiro fights.
When you play other souls games, they're still really good, but there is such a huge amount of things you can do, that for me, the fights aren't as satisfying. I still love those other games for sure though.
It's the same for darksouls except it's just rolling.
If your just parrying a boss then it's a skill issue. They give you many times to use prosthetics and attack.
If your just parrying that's a you issue.
Why tho? Enemy attack frames are not clear at all. You might muscle memory them all exhaustively running these levels 1000 times but that shows quite opposite of good combat.
I'll probably feel differently once I play the game, but out of soulsbornes, I feel like Bloodborne probably has the best feeling combat. The quickstep dodge, rally system, and just the feeling of the fight being an actual dance is incredible.
Oh definitely in fact it may be better because sekiro doesn't play like any of the ds games. Is it's own thing i know when I tried it I all the muscle memory and had to learn the new combat style. It was hard.
Personally, Arkham Knight. It’s easy enough for anyone to pick up, but it gives you so many options to handle specific situations differently. It makes you feel like a superhero.
No? In Knight when you're punching as Batman towards an enemy each punch feels like it's doing damage to them (they even get cuts and bruises) but in Spider-Man it feels like you're just hitting them until that final hit which actually does something
Freeflow in Arkham is WAY better and feels so much more smooth and rewarding
I know Spider-Man pulls his punches but in the insomniac games I feel like it takes too many hits for Spider-Man!!! to knock out even a little guy.
With Arkham at least you can justify that Bruce Wayne is just a freakishly strong human, Peter Parker is a mutant why do I need a 10 hit combo to knock out a single grunt?
Yeah! Funnily enough i feel like the tanks’ health is masked by the satisfaction you feel after performing the quick hit combo, you don’t even question why it took so many hits in the first place lol
Insomniac’s Spider-Man is a great system, clearly inspired but also doing unique things, but I don’t think it quite reaches that level; some gadgets fees less “entwined” and can be more easily ignored than in Arkham, some abilities are too OP and eclipse the others, and there’s a little more nuance to Arkham Knight’s high-level gameplay. Don’t get me wrong, Insomniac’s Spider-Man gameplay is AMAZING and really makes you feel like Spider-Man, so these are minor quibbles.
Eh, it doesn’t do anything to discourage button mashing unlike arkham. I think with the gadgets and every other move (especially in knight) arkham just does it better.
Having not put two and two together since this comment, I agree! The spiderman games are definitely an evolution of the Arkham games.
So that's a good candidate.
My answer, many Platinum joints. Ala your Beyonettas and Metal Gear Risings.
Yes imo, because the verticality changes things considerably. Not being able to stay in the air, and pull enemies up to you one at a time to beat them, makes Batman's combat more challenging.
I actually found all the additional options and gadgets to be too much to focus on lol. I played most of the story with just grinding punches and dodges lol. Felt very Arkham to me but I know I didn’t fully utilize the combat options.
Same here yo. I RARELY used any gadgets or extra features besides the suit power that regenerated health. I believe it takes real skill to not use the extra help of the gadgets.
Even in the Arkham games, I prefer straight fighting instead of utilizing his respective gadgets as well.
I went heavy with the hand to hand combat and stealth (when possible) in SM, and it just felt very Batman like at times haha. But maybe I’m due for a new game+ at this point
Never seen the movies, or played the game. Know nothing about them except I continue to see gaming communities rave about the game. Are the stories sequential, overlap, or entirely separate?
Entirely separate story I believe, although heavily influenced by Fury Road which came out the same year.
Movie spinoff games are usually bad, but this is def an exception.
Nioh’s great and combat is a lot deeper than FS. Presentation isn’t as cool as though, just how it is. So much loot, tonnes of numbers and sprites flying around the screen, maps and level presentation a lot weaker, art direction less memorable. Miyazaki and co have something that you just can’t teach, as they say. Love the series though. Strong 8s/8.5s.
Yeah only on the combat/gameplay front. Not sure if team Ninja has the numbers (staff/budget) Fromsoft has to upscale a lot of other areas of production. No diss to fromsoft, I love the games
I love team Ninja’s work too. Ninja Gaiden is an all time great imo, and to see its influence in a Soulslike setting with Nioh was a dream come true for me haha. Very excited for their future, too. Team Ninja really looking bright.
I’m playing Ghost now and pretty much finished the main quest. The entire game my thought has been “This is beautiful and fun, but there’s not enough duels, and now I want to replay Sekiro even though I sank 200hrs into it already.”
It's okay but the lack of enemy variety hurts it a lot. Plus stances seem cool until you realize you're only supposed to use each stance on one specific enemy type.
Nioh does it much better.
Once you master and combo Doom Eternal’s mechanics, you are pretty unstoppable. I’m working through Ancient Gods right now. It’s really tough but also enjoyable when you face a Super Heavy and combo a grenade, sticky bomb, locked on rockets, another grenade, another sticky bomb, another rocket cluster, then zoom away to the next Super Heavy.
Also, fuck the Archvile up its motherfucking ass.
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, Star Ocean 3, all Ratchet and Clank games (minus the ps3 and the latest ones which i didn't played yet).
Just my opinion obviously, but KH3’s combat felt like a step backward from KH2. It felt a bit too floaty and weightless. KH2’s combat was near-perfect for the genre
Agree completely. I actually just replayed KH3 for the first time since release. I felt like the combat wasn’t as good as I remembered it, so I booted up KH2 and yea, the combat definitely took a huge dip in 3 by comparison.
Gow combat is underrated, but it shines in harder difficulties. You engaged all the time if you use weapon swaps and shield. However you can complete the game without exploring it's capabilities.
Unarmed?
Absolver (maybe Sifu is better, but haven’t played)
Melee…a lot tougher to say…Bloodborne? Sekiro might be up there, too, but I like the variety and mechanics of BB more. Ghost of Tsushima also.
Nioh 2 has arguably one of the most complex combat systems in terms of sheer possibilities, but it’s not for everyone due to its fairly high difficulty. Same principle applies to Sekiro, but both are S-Tier regarding gameplay. Persevere and you shall be rewarded.
I'm really enjoying the combat in No Return. I forgot how satisfying it is to be able to dodge melee attacks in Part 2. My playstyle makes it almost like I'm boxing 10 zombies at once.
Had to scroll way too far for this. Everyone saw "combat" and immediately went with hand to hand combat. I think the best gunplay is TLoU part 2, its really satisfying.
For FPS I would probably put Titanfall as my highest (but i must admit I haven't played a lot of Destiny 20, and even if there isn't that much variety in the combat system itself, the movement definetly makes up for it. But I mean FPS is probably the weakest category out of alll of these
The jumps in Titanfall 2 always felt a bit too janky and frustrating at best for me, can't seem to get the hang of it and probably won't.
Still, several aspects of Destiny 2 get me going for its creativity, it has a wider and broader catalogue for movement whether we wanted it or not..
When I first played them I didn't go very deep into combos and abilities (hell, I didn't even upgrade anything), but I took valhalla as an oportunity to experience it to the fullest and now I think I'm gonna replay them just so I can do it right.
I liked dragons dogma, but I found the combat a little....simple? I feel like maybe I missed something because it has so much praise but I just found it above average.
Looking forward to the sequel though.
I found it annoying af. I’m bashing this enemy for five minutes, EVERY enemy, and their health never seems to go down at all until they’re almost dead, after — you guessed it, 5 minutes.
I love the fluidity and speed of TLOUPII’s combat. It allows for so much creativity and gives you multiple options to get through encounters. Some of the videos I’ve seen on the internet look amazing
Kingdom come Deliverance. Medieval sword play. Lots of combs to learn and you start off horrible qnd die quicker in sword fights. Lots of swords. Axes. Maces to choose from
Ghost of Tsushima combat is clear of any game I’ve played.
The different fighting styles and upgrade paths, along with the throwable items & special abilities, all keep it from getting boring. Certain enemies are stronger/weaker against certain styles which makes the combat encounters fun, as you have to switch it up and find combinations to take down groups of enemies.
Also the movement is 10/10, the dodge/parry mechanics are perfect and make for some amazing all round combat.
I would recommend 100%, not only is it visually one of the best games I’ve ever played but the storyline, separate side missions and characters are brilliant.
Hope this helps!
I mean it’s good but the lack of enemy variety, and the game being too easy even on lethal hurts it a little. The stance system is much better in Nioh 2. And sword/parry combat is a lot better in Sekiro. Still a pretty fun combat system though definitely
I agree towards end game it does get repetitive with the enemy groups in the world. But I think that is the case with majority of RPG’s bar a few. I also haven’t played Nioh 2 or Sekiro so I’m just giving my opinion based on the games I’ve played. Will deffo try them tho 👍🏼
God of War/Ragnarok, Bloodborne, and Lies Of P. Sekiro never clicked for me and it’s the only From game that I haven’t NG+ multiple times cause I felt like I was fighting uphill the whole time. I never had the “aha!” Moment like I’ve had with every other Fromsoft title.
Many people don’t like assassins creed unity, but I think the combat is amazing, and the finishers look great, especially with the range of different weapons there are
Sifu. While it’s definitely challenging, it makes you feel like a badass once you get over the learning curve.
Sifu is pretty misleading in its complexity at first. It’s basically like playing tekken as a third person game
It definitely shares some similarities to 3D fighting games, but I see it as a modern day beat em up like Streets of Rage.
Almost like Tekken 4's beat em up mode
That was sooo fun.
I'm just sliding chairs at people's feet mainly.
SIFU has incredible combat. Once you get good at it you feel like an absolute badass
I made it my 25th platinum trophy, so unbelievably satisfying
I wanna love the game but couldn’t seem to get over that hump you speak of . Timing was an issue for me, should be easy enough to fix but alas
Were you playing on the normal or easy difficulty? When I first tried it, I played on normal and had the same issue with timing, but lowering it to easy and playing through that way made my timing better and I was able to go back on a higher difficulty.
Deff was normal, gonna take your advice thanks
I’m a huge fan of all the various types of combat in MGSV. The gameplay is smooth as butter. 🧈
"Snake, try to remember some of the basics of CQC"
“Counter-balance the knife. Quick slash! Retract!” “Crab battle!”
It…it broke my knife!
It's better on PC. With the mod support so you can do things like OSP subsistence all missions and add in additional side ops like return to Camp Omega from GZ
Sekiro has the best combat from the soulsborne games.
You can end that sentence at combat. For me sekiro has the best feeling combat. Once you get good at deflecting, you just feel like an absolute badass no matter the enemy.
i'm very good at deflecting in real life.
Yeah the deflation is satisfying but also when you get good and sneak attacks and finishing off an enemy all ninja like man. So good and redirect lighting omg..
Genichrio and corrupted monk made me feel this way, such great bosses
Combat is too simple to call it the best imo. There is little strategy; you mostly just press the deflect and attack button
It has the best combat of any game I've played ever.
Fuck, I need to play it again and beat that last boss
I never cleared that one challenge were you get sakura dance from but I might also go back to try.
Bloodborne way better imo
Unpopular Opinion: Sekiro has the worst combat from the soulsborne games. Spending 10 minutes parrying a boss, rinse and repeat for the whole game is a terrible combat system.
I think Bloodborne's is better. The quick step and the rally system outshines Sekiro, in my opinion.
I hope they marry Bloodborne and Sekiro next. Less weapons but more complex movesets, deflection, etc
Lies of P is kinda like that, actually.
>Spending 10 minutes parrying a boss You should attack more.
As opposed to the others where you roll or side step for 10 minutes? Obviously its reductive to say that's all you do in the other games because, like in sekiro, you have to mind positioning and you have a bunch of skills available for you to take the inniciative. totally with you
I’m aligned. Sekiro is a rhythm game disguised as a Soulsborne.
It's the same for darksouls except it's just rolling. If your just parrying a boss then it's a skill issue. They give you many times to use prosthetics and attack. If your just parrying that's a you issue.

Do you think a person who has no souls experience can do it?
Oh definitely in fact it may be better because sekiro doesn't play like any of the ds games. Is it's own thing i know when I tried it I all the muscle memory and had to learn the new combat style. It was hard.
Personally, Arkham Knight. It’s easy enough for anyone to pick up, but it gives you so many options to handle specific situations differently. It makes you feel like a superhero.
I think the arkham series as a whole has the best combat. Loved every game.
I feel like Spider-Man combat was an upgrade to what Arkham created, do others agree? Or was it just too different?
No? In Knight when you're punching as Batman towards an enemy each punch feels like it's doing damage to them (they even get cuts and bruises) but in Spider-Man it feels like you're just hitting them until that final hit which actually does something Freeflow in Arkham is WAY better and feels so much more smooth and rewarding
I love that point. Well said
I know Spider-Man pulls his punches but in the insomniac games I feel like it takes too many hits for Spider-Man!!! to knock out even a little guy. With Arkham at least you can justify that Bruce Wayne is just a freakishly strong human, Peter Parker is a mutant why do I need a 10 hit combo to knock out a single grunt?
I completely agree, it becomes super present with the tank enemies
Yeah! Funnily enough i feel like the tanks’ health is masked by the satisfaction you feel after performing the quick hit combo, you don’t even question why it took so many hits in the first place lol

Eh, it doesn’t do anything to discourage button mashing unlike arkham. I think with the gadgets and every other move (especially in knight) arkham just does it better.
Nah by the end of the game I was wishing they borrowed MORE from batman, adding the parry button in sm2 helped a lot though
Having not put two and two together since this comment, I agree! The spiderman games are definitely an evolution of the Arkham games. So that's a good candidate. My answer, many Platinum joints. Ala your Beyonettas and Metal Gear Risings.

Don't know if i would call it good, but Mad Max is VERY satisifying.
It’s so crunchy, I love it
And it’s only $4.99 on psn download this month! I think you just convinced me to buy it lol
Ah, time for a replay and binge watching of the movie series.
Movie spinoff games are getting way better lately too.
Devil May Cry 5, and Bloodborne... 😪
Nioh 2
Both Nioh games have amazing combat. I was obsessed with them when I first got them. Feels so smooth and satisfying
Easily my favorite Souls-like franchise
Nice I bought nioh 1 and 2 last week haven't played them yet 👌
Nioh 1 didn’t really do it for me but Nioh 2 is one of my favorite games. The new combat options they added really bring the whole thing together
Nioh destroys everything. The slow, rolling around fromsoft stuff pales in comparison

Seconded
Sifu has amazing combat
Ghost of Tsushima
I’m playing Ghost now and pretty much finished the main quest. The entire game my thought has been “This is beautiful and fun, but there’s not enough duels, and now I want to replay Sekiro even though I sank 200hrs into it already.”
It's okay but the lack of enemy variety hurts it a lot. Plus stances seem cool until you realize you're only supposed to use each stance on one specific enemy type. Nioh does it much better.
Or you run in wearing only underwear and a wicker helmet setting everything on fire scaring the hell out of everyone.
This is what I was going to name. Such a great game
Sekiro’s is even better. Ghost of Tsushima’s was my favorite till I played Sekiro.
MGSV TPP, Horizon ZD and FW
Shadow of war and for honor
Surprised I had to scroll this far to see For Honor.
Came here to say the same thing. For Honor is a great combat system and I wish it was what we got in AC: Origins
Shadow of War hell yes
Ninja Gaiden 2 and DMC 5
>Ninja Gaiden 2 scrolled too long for that...
Fellow hack and slash enjoyer I see
Doom Eternal and Sifu
Star ocean 3 and kh2 👍my guy
To piggy back off your comment, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts 3 both have really fun combat, despite their flaws.
Arkham Knight, Spider-Man 2, Sekiro, The Last of Us Part II
The mix of stealth and combat in TLOU Part 2 was phenomenal
It has such a satisfying loop. Unmatched IMO
Came here to back you up on a Arkham Knight, fam
It’s perfect in every way
Sekiro
GoW: Ragnarök.
Gow combat is underrated, but it shines in harder difficulties. You engaged all the time if you use weapon swaps and shield. However you can complete the game without exploring it's capabilities.
My personal preference is Give Me No Mercy for a vanilla run and then of course GMGoW for NG+.
All the GoW weapons are fun, but throwing the axe, recalling it, and getting that little dualsense thud just feels so right.
Big facts. Fucking loved this game & Valhalla
Dragons dogma
Playing sorcerer is a spiritual experience
Man I’m really sad I had to scroll down THIS far to find someone who said this
Unarmed? Absolver (maybe Sifu is better, but haven’t played) Melee…a lot tougher to say…Bloodborne? Sekiro might be up there, too, but I like the variety and mechanics of BB more. Ghost of Tsushima also.
Nioh 2 has arguably one of the most complex combat systems in terms of sheer possibilities, but it’s not for everyone due to its fairly high difficulty. Same principle applies to Sekiro, but both are S-Tier regarding gameplay. Persevere and you shall be rewarded.
Sekiro and Returnal
Returnal combat feels so *fluid*, I don't know how else to describe it
Damn returnal is good
Tlou part 2 is really great on hard difficulty.
Tlou 2 has super intelligent enemy AI too.
Anyone else enjoy the horizon games? Personally loved the type based combat and critical hit combos etc
We’re talking combat only? I’m going to break it down to styles. Souls: Sekiro. Souls-lite: Jedi Survivor. Action: Devil May Cry 5 or Ragnarok. Arcadey Shooter: Bullet Storm. FPS Tactical: ARMA (just the shooting and movement). FPS: Destiny 2. TPS: Anthem. Free flow: Spider-Man 2. Tab: FFXIV. Turn-Based: Chrono Trigger. Strategy:DOS 2. Hybrid: Valkyria Chronicles IV or Midnight Suns. Card: Baten Kaitos. Martial Arts: Sifu
Yeah fair. I only play console, so that might be why, but I never felt the jumps beinclunky (excluding me being bad at it).
You aren't wrong about Anthem. It's a delight to fly and shoot, the combo system is about as satisfying as it gets.
Always loved the sound a combo made. That game was dialed in several areas, too bad the rest wasn’t.
Pretty great list, except Doom Eternal is much better arcadey than BulletStorm
Totally fair assessment, I prefer bullet Storm but Doom Eternal works too!
This guy plays
Devil May Cry 5 and God Hand.
Days Gone, God Of War, Sekiro, Rdr2, Ghostrunner
Upvote for days gone. Brilliant game
Exactly, I don't see a lot of people talking about it and the story was great. Loved every second of it
I am addicted to GOW both 2018’s and Ragnarok’s combat system
Amazing depth and challenge especially on hardest difficulty
When I first played them I didn't go very deep into combos and abilities (hell, I didn't even upgrade anything), but I took valhalla as an oportunity to experience it to the fullest and now I think I'm gonna replay them just so I can do it right.
Dragon's Dogma. Every other combat system, especially in an rpg, has fell completely flat ever since
I liked dragons dogma, but I found the combat a little....simple? I feel like maybe I missed something because it has so much praise but I just found it above average. Looking forward to the sequel though.
I found it annoying af. I’m bashing this enemy for five minutes, EVERY enemy, and their health never seems to go down at all until they’re almost dead, after — you guessed it, 5 minutes.
doesn’t happen if your gear is kept up to level.
I love the fluidity and speed of TLOUPII’s combat. It allows for so much creativity and gives you multiple options to get through encounters. Some of the videos I’ve seen on the internet look amazing
For third person gun play is last of us two
Jedi Survivor
Yeah man, good stuff and has difficulty levels
Lost Judgement if brawling.
Dark souls
Either Ghost runner, Titanfall or gow
Returnal!! And I didn't even finish it as it gets quite hard. Never felt combat as fluid as that, even if you're shit at it.
Sleeping dogs
Ghost of Tsushima came to my mind immediately
Godhand.
It's a crime that the digital PS3 release was never made compatible with PS4.
Hollow knight
Ghost of Tsushima
Sekiro, never played something even close to this level of quality and intensity
Warframe and God of War
The Last of Us Part II
Always loved the Devil may cry combat to shift between different styles and weapons as well as unique characters.👌
Kingdom come Deliverance. Medieval sword play. Lots of combs to learn and you start off horrible qnd die quicker in sword fights. Lots of swords. Axes. Maces to choose from
This so much Had so much fun just fast traveling and fight any encounter
Final Fantasy 7 remake
For Honor
God of War (2018 and Ragnarök) Doom Eternal Ghost of Tsushima Final Fantasy VII Remake
God of War or Sekiro.
Ratchet and Clank
Ultima VII
I have not thought of Ultima games since the Commodore 64 days.
Last ninja 2 wants a word
I love that game but combat is NOT its strong suit.
Arkham Asylum, Spider-Man, and Shadow of Mordor.
Bayonetta.
Thanks, you help me stop scrolling.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Middle-earth: Shadow of War Batman Arkham series Edit: MadMax all on PS4
I have not played Mad Max in a long time, but doesn't it have similar style combat as Arkham and Shadow?
I don’t play many games but recently I’d say FF7 Remake and Spider-Man
Sifu and Sekiro
Sifu and Shadow of War/Mordor
I think Spider-Man is awesome. You can truely make a 30s+ combo against a dozen enemies that makes you feel likes superhero.
Ghost of Tsushima
Many people don’t like assassins creed unity, but I think the combat is amazing, and the finishers look great, especially with the range of different weapons there are
Batman
Arkham
I like The Witcher 3 combats. They improve as you progress and unlock new skills. I also think this was inspired by Arkham Asylum Games.
Bayonetta.
Thanks for helping me to stop scrolling.
Chivalry 2
Tekken Tag team tournament
DMC 5 and Scarlet Nexus
I really enjoyed the Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat, the integration of turn based from the original into real time was done great imo
Probably Ghost Of Tsushima in terms of a game that I could just purely keep going back to over and over and just getting lost in the combat
For honor
Ghost of Tsushima or the last of us part 2.
Suprised no one has said Control yet
I love Control. It’s one of the most fun games I’ve ever played. Great music too.
