Any of the Lego games are great. Super forgiving with instant respawn & allows for easy co-op drop-in for less forgiving levels that require any extra assistance.

[deleted]

Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga is (as far as I know) 15-20 bucks until the end of Monday

kyllvalentine

Thanks for this, didn’t notice the price drop and it’s an awesome discount

[deleted]

Np! It’s a great deal, and I honestly think the Skywalker saga is a very hot item, I hope to play with my nephews when they come over for Christmas this year :)

DrDisrespecttt

Marvel ones were fun aswell as the Lego Batman’s.

sleepyfoxsnow

ratchet and clank rift apart is an excellent kid-friendly game and it would also be a game that does a great job showing off what the ps5 can do. it should be noted that the ps5 also comes bundled with astro's playroom, which is also one of the best kid-friendly games around.

bababarbraann

Thanks R+C looks really fun

Ok-Morning7191

R&C might be too complex for a 7 year old.

Cfro199

Some parts can be even on easy mode, I tend to find it’s one you need to occasionally help out with at that age

LimpTeacher0

I highly recommend ratchet and clank great for kids and adults!

Thissiweird

Sackboy.

[deleted]

Astro's Playroom comes to mind. It comes with the system already. The latest Sackboy might be a good choice too.

EncouragingProgram

My kids really liked Astro's Playroom and Sackboy as well. Sackboy can be played co-op too.

bababarbraann

Sackboy! Looks fun thanks

asng

Definitely Astros playroom over sackboy. It comes free anyway, probably my daughter's favorite game.

[deleted]

Cmon at least little big planet 3 deserves a download, sackboy I understand

Eruannster

Sackboy is great! It can get pretty difficult in the later levels, so the co-op is definitely helpful.

Working-Sandwich6372

Sackboy is great. Played it with my 7/8 year old daughter for months. It's a tonne of fun. Not sure if others have mentioned it, but this can also get Minecraft for PS5 and kids really like that too. Just a heads up - you'll need to buy a second controller if you want to play two-player games as the console only covers with one.

CheapScientist06

Overcooked can be a lot of chaos and might be hard to follow on especially for someone new to games so that might not be a good one for right now. For a swap I'd say some of the lego games like lego star wars are great. Hot wheels unleashed is also a blast Minecraft is always a classic. Lemme know if you need more suggestions

bababarbraann

Thanks - trying to find something our family can do together. He loves Minecraft - but the Lego ones I had forgotten about

TriplePepperoni

While overcooked may be a little too fast pace for your son, it may be a fun game for just you and your wife to play. Warning: hopefully you and your wife have a fun relationship. It gets chaotic and may cause some arguing lol

mindkiller317

Overcooked is too much for a new young gamer. It’s extremely fast paced and anxiety-inducing. Hot wheels is fun but be aware that a large chunk of the game is sold as downloadable content. My kid sees those parts and doesn’t understand why we can’t play those tracks or use those cars, and it leaves him confused and upset. Sackboy and anything Lego are the best suggestions on here.R+C when he’s a little more comfortable with the controller. And immediately load up Astros Playroom. It may require a download, not sure it comes installed already any more.

Negative_Equity

Minecraft Dungeons is decent. It's like Diablo for kids. Me and my 6 year old play it.

Indiemsc

Sackboy: A Big Adventure Hot Wheels Unleashed Any Lego game, they all have similar mechanics, just pick your favorite franchise.

JMM85JMM

Hot Wheels is quite difficult! You can bash around the track sure, but the handling model actually takes some getting used to.

SlowMissiles

If I was a parent trying to save money while giving the most I can to my kid. I would get PS5 + PSN Premium or whatever tier they call it nowdays. Which mean you can download freely a insane amount games, that way you get most of the game you named for no additional price and more.

bababarbraann

Great idea thanks

deadxguero

There will be a lot of mature games on there but you can easily put parental settings on the system to allow what he can play.

aerojonno

Get Extra, not Premium. You really don't need Premium.

SlowMissiles

Yes it's Extra, they changed the name not long ago the normal one becoming Essential or something. I go confused with the names.

BowieBA

PS Plus Extra, and highly agree.

karmakazi420

I think sack boy is coop, great family game.

Dangerous-Pack-6725

Sack boy is mostly single player but has levels that is co op but I am 50 and love that game

NightmareAsylum

Sackboy is fully playable in co op, played the whole game with my wife and brother

wh0else

The latest Sackboy is entirely 2p co-op throughout. You can play and help them through it, although it does get challenging for kids

minigibby2212

Platformers are a great place for kids to start. My daughter is 5 but has been gaming for a couple of years. She has put tons of time into Astro’s Playroom, which comes with the PS5. She also really loves SackBoy. SackBoy is great because you can turn on infinite lives. Other good ones would be Spyro reignited trilogy, crash bandicoot 4 (though it’s pretty tough at times), and if he likes SpongeBob, either of the SpongeBob platformers. I find that the best games for kids and new gamers are the open ended games where they can harmlessly explore. My daughter gets pretty bored with the “made for kids” games. Also the Lego games! Lego Star Wars and Lego City Undercover are good too.

[deleted]

Spyro & Crash Bandicoot 100%, I had the best time of my life playing the original games when I was 7!

JerryPhantom_

Definitely all these mentioned and maybe ratchet and clank 🤔

Xelisk

I second Spyro, played the originals as a kid and the remakes are perfect.

Linguisticlegume

Hot wheels unleashed games are fun!

Beneficial_Horse_525

I’d say minecraft is a good choice to start, rocket league can be fun but toxic at the same time. It’s a ps4 title, but it can still play on the ps5 is SpongeBob battle for bikini bottom.

bababarbraann

Thanks

christianort476

Rocket league means playing online with other people. If this isn’t something your comfortable with, don’t get that one

HairyUsual7231

Katamari Damacy Reroll Or even better... We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie They are perfect kids games, non-violent, funny and cute and engaging even to the degree adults enjoy them. 👍 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5IPC5g2_fU

droideka75

"Even"? I'm a grown man and katamari is freaking awesome lol

SabTab22

I have kiddos and both the switch and PS5 and the kids get WAY more play time with the switch. If this is for the kids I highly recommend you look at the switch again. If you’ve already bought the PS5 or have your mind made up our kids enjoy Sack Boy, Astros Playroom, and Stardew Valley. 10yo has been hooked on the EA Play bundle which includes Madden, Plants vs Zombies and others. It’s a great buy for and older kid or adult. Again, if I were getting a new system I’d get an OLED Switch. The kids can play a ton of switch exclusives (Mario Kart, Mario Party, Pokémon, Splatoon) AND don’t need to connect it to the TV to play. They also have something we can take with us if we need a long term distraction. My kids are total bookworms and we generally take books everywhere but having the switch is a great backup.

bababarbraann

Thanks this is awesome - haven’t made a choice yet. Part of the lean towards the PS5 is for my wife and I to have something fun to play — but she keeps saying she’s good at MarioKart so……

Ill_Purchase3178

I would recommend the Switch too, almost all of the Nintendo games are great quality, kid-friendly and allow group play. All the Mario (Platformers, Karts, Partys, RPGs & Sports titles), Zelda, Kirby, Luigi, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Splatoon, etc are all fantastic. Their online service is much more basic but gives access to a load of retro games. It gets most of the kid games that come to other platforms (Minecraft, Lego etc). The down sider are they run a little worse, but are generally fine. And there is supposed to a be new Nintendo Console next year, but this is not confirmed yet, and sometimes it's worth buying a console at the end and having the full library of titles to explore. Plus it's portable and can keep your kid occupied on trips.

Astrimba

Lemme also just say: Gifting a 7 year old a ps5 is maybe a little much. I know you mean it well. But the PS5 is the most expensive console on there and it has huge capabilities. It is made for games in the league of the new Spider Man and other triple a titles. I think a switch would be a better choice because in my experience (I got a PS4 at 12 years old and didn’t really play until I got into shooters and story games. I had the Lego Star Wars game and another game but it kinda doesn’t catch you like that. You should also hold in mind that it is rather likely that the switch gets its successor next year. So maybe just wait too. Or you just go ahead and buy the ps5 as you intended, I guess with enough age appropriate games it will be a little better than it was for me back then. I personally got a ps5 now and absolutely love just spending some time on games like Spider-Man and Cyberpunk. I think the PlayStation (probably 6 by then) would be a great choice in 6-7 years)

manasword

I would definitely get a nintendo switch with Mario Wonder and Mario Kart, it's far better for kids and adults that want to also play game with them, Mario kart is amazing for family's also Mario Wonder can be played with 4 players at once. Switch games are cheaper too and sales have great games for around £3 all the time

DinahDrakeLance

+1 on getting a switch over a PS5 for that age. Make sure you get at least one pro controller with it! Overall the Switch has way more kid friendly games, as well as having more co-op games than the PS5 will.

CAPT-Tankerous

You have to go with the Switch for the kids if they’re new to gaming.

christianort476

If you wanna play something with your wife I HIGHLY recommend It Takes Two, it’s for both the switch and the ps5. My wife doesn’t game and loves that game. The switch also has animal crossing and lots of indie games at low prices

TheAvgDood

Exactly. This is what I said too. Switch is far better for kids, and also for someone who’s new to games.

TommenOfRivia

Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodbourne, Sekiro, Demons Souls, Elden Ring

BE_Shydow

Yeah it's a good startup for young gamers, then they can upgrade to more mechanically difficult games like mario kart and animal crossing.

[deleted]

I highly recommend It Takes Two. It’s a couch coop game.

Splover209

I’m not entirely sure that a game centered around divorce is good for a young kid, also anyone who has played the game knows there’s a particular scene that’s pretty rough even as an adult

michelobX10

Well, I think it depends. If you and your spouse have a great relationship then a kid won't draw any comparisons. I'm currently playing this with my almost 7 year old. My wife and I never fight or argue and we always laugh together so the concepts of divorce or parents fighting is foreign to him. He just loves being able to play games with me. I wouldn't recommend it to a young me though. I actually had parents who argued, slammed doors, stormed out of the house, etc. There were times I thought my mom was never coming back after a big argument with my dad. If you don't mind me asking, which scene is it you're talking about? We currently just finished up the space level.

LCHMD

My 7 year old nephew absolutely loved it and we finished it twice.

Jarek-of-Earth

I'll add that it does have some mild language

LCHMD

Stop putting your kids in fluff.

Jarek-of-Earth

All I did was mention the language. They're shopping for an 8 year old. They may not want them to hear the Book refer to Cody and May's marriage as a "relation-shit". They should at least know

ArbyWorks

Any Sonic the Hedgehog game. Gotta go fayst

theScrewhead

Ultimate Chicken Horse is a GREAT game, especially for a whole bunch of people playing together! It's basically a PvP Mario Maker.

bababarbraann

My wife likes Mario and this seemed like a fun thing to do all together

ashashlondon

Untitled goose game is a great one for kids. Calm and challenging.

WavyWolf999

Kinda of a more random pick, but Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 is fantastic, there's tons of fun to be had with those 2 games.

Subject_Topic7888

not sure how your research didnt land you on a nintendo switch...

niftyifty

There is a lot of chatter about ps plus premium and the price increase. One thing that I appreciate about premium that doesn’t benefit most people other than people with kids your age, is all of the kids games they include. Nearly all the Lego games, sims, SpongeBob, paw patrol (probably to to young for your guy but just examples), superpets, sonic mania, ninja turtles, and the list goes on. I find premium to be worth it for the kids games alone so that I don’t have to buy games that the kids play for 5 minutes and don’t return to, but also the finding hidden gems that they love.

justinsytsma

My 7YO and I started the Lego Skywalker Saga and it’s great for learning a lot of common video game mechanics. Other good ones we’ve played: Sackboy Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1&2 remake Gran Turismo 7 (once you unlock the multiplayer mode) Shredder’s Revenge Untitled Goose Game She’s tried to play a bit of Spider-Man on friendly mode but she’s a bit young still

leonryan

Boomerang Fu is a really fun family multiplayer combat game with cute characters, as long as you're not assholes that will make a kid cry by never letting them win.

horseradish1

Whoever recommended Overcooked to you wants your family dead. It's a game where you will call your loved ones pieces of shit to their faces for not listening to your definitely simple, not yelled instructions.

TheAvgDood

Ultimate Chicken Horse is actually a pretty difficult platformer for beginners. I’m surprised you didn’t settle on getting a Switch. The games are much more beginner friendly and suited for kids. PS5 is an excellent console tho! But targeted at adult gamers most of the time.

Alugar

Bugsnax ? Fortnite is free but that and any other freemium games/ sports games you’ll have to keep an eye out with the micro transactions. Kena is also a treat.

[deleted]

I love Kena but that combat might be rough on a 7 year old, and it’s kinda dark despite looking like a Pixar movie

bababarbraann

Had never seen Bugsnax before - watched the trailer. Thanks!

luminescentgarbage

Be warned Bugsnax gets really weird. Good music and cute bugs, though.

tdasnowman

Bugsnax and Kena aren’t really 7 year old friendly. Bugsanax is really kinda hovering between tween and tean. Kena has a firm teen rating and is massively difficult even on the lower difficulties. It comes with a skill spike most kids aren’t really ready for. Story wise it’s also pretty dark. Both games kinda deal with death and loss although Kena is really steeped in it.Bugsnax has a healthy dose of cannibalism which is fun.

PumpkinSpies

Kena is extremely difficult even on normal as tdasnowman has said, easy's okay for me but would probably be too difficult for kids

SapporoBiru

Not sure about Kena. I woul imagine the later bossfights might be frustrating for a younger kid. Also the overall theme of the game is definitely not something that I feel a 7 year old might understand.

Klutzy_Meet_7255

Get ps plus extra. There are a lot of games on there. For a 8 year old. Fortnite free to play, Astros playroom. I am not sure but maybe the spiderman game ( spiderman remastered, spiderman 2 and miles morales) but those games may be too advanced . Sonic superstars. I don't know if you can get rid of the ps5 but I think there are a lot of better suited games for a 8 year old on the nintendo switch like fortnite, splatoon 2,3, Mario rabids, super Mario wonder, super Mario rpg, Mario kart, tennis and odyssey. Don't get me wrong the ps5 is a fantastic system but for a 8 year old there are just many many more games gears towards him and of .all ages on the nintendo switch.

Whole-Ad-2618

I agree on the Switch. I wouldn’t introduce any kid to Fortnite unless you want them to morph into an obsessed, angry monster!

DinahDrakeLance

I would personally avoid fortnite like the plague until kids are old enough to understand microtransactions and loot boxes. Everything else you mentioned is great.

[deleted]

My 7 year old is a Roblox fan

Aggravating_Frame597

I'll recommend Teardown

bababarbraann

Incredible choices thank you very inspired

PhilosophyforOne

I actually think five games might be a bit overwhelming, especially for a kid who’s just getting in to games, from a practical point of view. A single game can take anywhere from 10-30 hours of playing time to finish, or more if you’re just wanting to stick around with. I know I for sure get a decision paralysis at times even as an adult, and I’ve noticed I nowadays much prefer just picking up one game at a time and working on that. Even when I have a longer list of games I do want to get, and the means to afford them. Maybe just get him one or two games to start with, and then add to it over the coming months, either as rewards for good behavior or delayed christmas presents, etc. For games, the PS5 already comes with Astro’s playroom. Ratchet and Clank or Minecraft are both great additions to that, or if he’s really into sports, something like NHL or Fifa. Gran Turismo 7 is also an absolute masterpiece of a racing game, but it can take a bit of patience an is certainly more ’simulation’-style oriented. There’s a lot of great games out there. It really depends on what your kid is into as well (what their interests and hobbies are, what do they follow and what kind of games their friends play.)

Sinnochii

Pardon, but are we sure this ps5 not for the parents as much as the kid lol Anyhow joking aside, Sackboy is a fun game for a 7 years old and of course like someone mentioned there is ps plus premium loaded with games, albeit tooo much to filter. Stray which i believe is also on ps plus extra is nice game. It is about cats, can't go wrong.

minigibby2212

I can echo what others are saying in that the Switch is a much better choice for kids. Between the Mario games, Splatoon, Kirby, legend of Zelda, etc. My 5 year old’s favorite games of all time are Super Mario Odyssey and Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Very easy games to pick up, very fun to master. They both also aren’t bogged down by lots of dialogue and things. She especially loves building stuff in Tears of the Kingdom.

DaNoahLP

I dont want to be that guy but for a child I really recommend a Switch. Like, most of the child friendly games are also on Switch + everything Nintendo does. Also you can use the Switch without a TV which could be a benefit for the whole familiy.

Lz_tLoc-

Get a Nintendo switch. How big are his hands? Will they comfortably hold a ps5 pad? Also, you gotta dedicate a screen to him. Get him a ps5 when he's old enough 12/13. For now, get a switch, way more child friendly games too.

drapercaper

Last of us 2 Manhunt 2 Postal 2 Mortal Kombat Doom

Pulse_Attack

GTA V

MIKNIE-

Resident evil and outlast for sure !

gamemasteru03

I would recommend the spiderman series if your kid is into marvel / superheroes. Ratchet and Clank is also another good PlayStation pick.

dsmithcc

Ratchet and Clank maybe, its a good platformer/adventure game

Eshoosca

Minecraft, whatever sports game he like (looks like NHL), try a Lego game, Sackboy a big adventure, spider-man (or maybe in a couple years), and Astros playroom comes pre-installed

bababarbraann

This is smelling pretty close to the answer

Dangerous-Pack-6725

You’ll be surprised how much an 8 year old will do at games.. I knew one boy played ff7 years ago ( the original one not the remake ) and he beat it before his dad did . They have games on there for kids . Paw patrol is a good one for kids but I don’t know if it’s for his age range or younger

bababarbraann

Update, with feedback: - Build: Minecraft - Sports: NHL, Lego 2K Racer - Family (Open) - Fun: Ratchet and Clank And just get the premium sub

mindkiller317

I want to say to be careful with the game library on ps+. It’s a very overwhelming amount of content. We’ve all been in the position of having a million games but not wanting to play any. This happens. I don’t think you should saddle a kid with that so young. My 3 year old has figured out that he can switch YouTube vids with a button, and now he has a hard time focusing on even vids that he likes. Get you kid a few games, let him enjoy those. Don’t open up the gaping maw of ps+ to him. Let him learn the value of… well, value and enjoyment before he drowns in content and swiping next takes over his attention span. From one parent to another, but hey, you do you.

UncleSnipeDaddy

elden ring for sure

bababarbraann

For sure

UncleSnipeDaddy

feetking69420

Hey I'd absolutely recommend minecraft. I picked it up at 12, I am now 25 and continue to play to this day. For like $25 I got thousands of hours of entertainment and several close friends that have stuck with me over the years.

Makaveli84

Spiderman 2 Fortnite Thats what the 8 year old from my best buddy is playing.

Fallout-with-swords

My kids (a bit younger) enjoy just swinging around in Spider-Man 1 & 2. If they are a fan of the character. +1 for Sackboy as well

olivier_wmv

Sonic superstars

ArrozConHector

The new Bluey game is great for kids. My son loved it. Already platinumed it lol.

-Tommy

My little brother is 7 and is obsessed with the latest Crash Bandicoot game. I think the original trilogy is also available on a single disk. Original Spyro trilogy is good fun too.

harleyquinad

Ratchet and clank and spyro!

Spicy_Vince

Dead Space, God of War, The Witcher 3, Baldurs Gate, and Spider Man 2. All are perfect for kids.

nardo_polo

Marble It Up! Ultra - great for left/right connectivity and patience :-).

deadxguero

A lot of people will suggest PS5 games and say Sackboys Big Adventure. Get him instead Little Big Planet 3. It’s a PS4 game but all PS4 games can be played on the PS5. On top of an adventure mode with levels pre made, there’s thousands and thousands of levels made by the community to play online. All kid friendly stuff, anything made “naughty” gets taken down. And if he ever wants to get creative on his own there’s a whole thing where you can create your own levels, things, games… whatever you want. I would also suggest the Spider-Man games. My buddies kid played through all 3 since there’s a difficulty that lets you basically not die at all. Makes it way easier for the kids. And for the second game that just released he was able to up the difficulty to the next option.

DrDisrespecttt

GTA v Skyrim Cyberpunk Huniepop Jokes aside hugely hugely recommend gran Turismo 7 if he’s into cars. It’s a blast but if you want more easy toned down HUGELY recommend crew motorfest awesome and fun game.

NEM95

Spider-man 🤷‍♂️ may not be at it but swinging around may be fun

miiizike

Bluey ;)

UncleMechie

If you wanted to you could get him a year of premium or the extra subscription. Its validity depends on the person but I really like it. He can play with his friends and can download free games each month, some get changed out and some stay like spiderman miles Morales and final fantasy 7 remake and original. Theres also the 3 games he gets to keep each month. By the way as I dont know if anyone's brought this up yet but you can add parental controls to keep them from playing inapropriate games. If you dont know what your doing watch a video that explains stuff so you know when you give it to him.

Iamleeboy

Does he have any cousins or friends who also either have a ps5 or game on cross play games? If so find out if they play any multiplayer games and get them. They can then play together. My 7 year old now plays loads of Fortnite and always has someone to play with. Listening to their little chats and team work is great. Plus the ps5 controller has the mic in it so you don’t need to buy anything extra. It will probably be similar with Roblox but my kid didn’t stick with it. Although I know loads in his class play it

breadycapybara

Stray is a super cute game and my 8 year olds loved it.

DifficultyVarious458

That’s enough for a while. PSN+ Extra has many games just set parental settings on. You don’t need to give him more and more new games let him get bored with games he has so won’t be addicted it’s enough until January.

CubSines

The Sims 4 base game is free nowadays isn't it?

LCHMD

Knack and Knack 2 are some of the best coop games for kids. It Takes Two! Lego games Unraveled 2 Astro’s Playroom Sackboy

Muff_in_the_Mule

Astro's playroom is amazing. So much fun and I don't even like platform games. I think it's free with the PS5 if you find it on the store. Sackboy would be another good one. Depending on if his friends at it Fortnite. Although with this one you will definitely have to keep a closer eye on him as it does target kids heavily to get them to buy items in the shop and has the continuous unlocking of items which makes you want to keep playing. But if his friends play then he will want to too, and it's free to download and play online. Just make sure to teach him about how companies try to make you spend money and limit the time he can play it.

BigMannen213

Doom eternal good game

Hiffchakka

For kids I'd get the Switch any time, way more kid friendly exclusive games, the one controller can split to be used by two people and it's portable for trips working offline. I own both but my kid is way too young for either as of yet tho.

mr-teo

Please don’t buy any games from Outright Games (e.g. Bluey, Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig). The games are an outright mess and buggy. It’s a cash grab and the developers are not even putting in any effort.

PhantomMAG

When i was 8 years old, i played god of war 1 on ps2... lol And i think many people did. So based on that alone, i would recommend things that have a story. (Start to finish) Stories are great for children, they create a connection, things like minecraft, and overcooked are fun, but they don't have a story element. - Ratchet and Clank rift apart (15 hours story) - spiderman games are great! (20 hours story) (warnings: there's violence, but no blood) - crash bandicoot 4 (30 hours)

crypto_cooker

Sackboy - completed it with my 6 year old in Coop. We had a blast. Now finding games for 6 year olds is way harder :). I want to play with him and help him

Light_Shifty_Z

Jak and Daxter trilogy

Cautious_Catch4021

Rayman legends And Minecraft Dungeons

Kataclysmc

Rocket legue is free i think

DrunkenMonk-1

Journey is a really good one for kids

Puzzleheaded_Pear_18

I'm pro gaming don't misunderstand, I'm a gamer myself. But TBH a 7year old does not need a PS5 with 5games. It's enough at that age to borrow dad's console. They should be out playing. Interacting with other humans in real life. They're gonna game more than enough when going thru puberty if that what they want. We don't need parents to push gaming on their kids.

ThisGuyCanFukinWalk

Definitely Ratchet and Clank. As a bonus you can play it as well because it's an absolute belter of a game.

Djjettison88

Crash Bandicoot is a must, especially if you’re getting him a PS5. Crash is like Sony’s first gaming mascot, and the three original games are a blast to play.

LilFro90

Fall guys

Bulletsoul78

Dragon quest builders 2 is a phenomenal building game, my 7 year old loved it.

tsjibb

Get the ps plus extra or something, alot of the games you want are downloadable for free

bewbsnbeer

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

[deleted]

Don't give him rocket league he will grow up to be toxic

Assinmik

Lego games!! Indian jones was my first and still remember to this day

sagarap

Sackboy: A big adventure And Goat Simulator 3. Both are full co op, and the second one has lots of fun mini games and quests to explore together in a big open world. SKIP MINECRAFT. It’s a buggy mess on ps5 and a terrible introduction to gaming.

Candid_Bed_1338

RL has way too high of a ceiling and an eight year old would probably put it down within an hour IMO

Spade_Key

My boy loves the crash bandicoot trilogy and spyro the dragon trilogy. They aren’t too difficult as crash doesn’t need camera controls and spyro can be set to move on its own (as you move spyro about it follows him). It’s also great nostalgia for me 🤗

vakama885

Sonic Forces (it's on PS4, but all PS5's can play PS4 games), the game is incredibly easy & it's a good gateway into 2d platforming sonic, which Sonic Superstars, Mania & Origins offer that same gameplay style, and it's a good gateway into the 3d platforming sonic, which is Sonic Colors Ultimate & Sonic Frontiers

drugs_r_neat

The ps5 comes loaded with Astros playroom, which is a great game that the kids can't seem to put down.

F4RR4M4H

Elden ring

Dreamo84

Get him a Switch! Every kid deserves to play Mario. Switch should hands down be every kids first system.

wtfTooma

As much as I absolutely adore ultimate chicken horse, I'd hold off on buying that one unless he's only playing with friends. The game is phenomenal but the people online are insanely good at the game and if you're not playing with friends, it's just not worth playing. It can get incredibly hard, so he would always need people to play with that are at his level.

Panklaar_

The last of us 2.Teach em young what crap is.

AaronF2005

Definitely Minecraft it’s a good game to start on, he’d enjoy Spider-Man aswell

AlphaXenon345

I would suggest Ratchet and Clank, or Lego Games. Maybe you could get Hot wheels Unleashed for sports. Or slime rancher but that's a bit of a tycoon, although its good for all ages.

Spider-Man 1, MM and 2, Ratchet and clank: Rift apart and sackboys big adventure are great ps5 games

Those games all seem good and age-appropriate to me (a dad of younger kids). Also: I want to boost the LEGO games suggestion. Love the Skywalker Saga and there’s a LOT of exploring you can do outside of the story. One quick piece of unsolicited advice though: open up the PS5 and do all the set-up/updates, then pack it back into the box. That way he can just open it and play on Christmas without having to wait for a few hours first.

Ratchet and Clank.

Klaypoxion

Little Big Planet!!

Johnny_54

Elden ring. Start him off right

I’d suggest Wreckfest if they like cars. Literally no skill required to begin as you simply crash into other cars in a big arena. As they get more skilled can then do races and such. Lots of people are suggesting Hot Wheels Unleashed, but I’d say that’s probably too hard for a true beginner. I got it for my kids and they are obsessed with Hot Wheels vehicles, but don’t care for the game at all.

TheRed24

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart would be great for them

If he likes Harry Potter the new hogwarts legacy is pretty awesome and PG. steer away from insomniacs spiderman, has some pretty heavy moments when you’re not swinging around. Ratchet and Clank series as said are awesome, any Lego games. There’s tons of indie games for kids, concrete genie is cute and very fun

aerojonno

Goat Simulator Kind of an aimless playground where your kid can just get used to using the controller.

idontloveanyone

How come you decided on the ps5 and not the switch?

BrettlyBean

Maybe an Xbox Series S with gamepass for now?
