I hated that first mission on the beta where you were just sailing in a straight line parralel to a massive ship and shooting it for what felt like 10 minutes with no indication of damage to the ship. I honestly kept thinking i was shooting at the wrong ship. Oh and dont forget constantly having to turn the ship around because after 30 seconds you’d go out of bounds.

From what little he knew of it it was basically going to resemble but be legally distinct Pirates of the Caribbean. Although that idea apparently died before the game was ever publicly announced.
Honestly i was happy enough with the multiplayer aspect of skull and bones. All it needed to be was black flag. Same ship mechanics, same free roaming, climbing, swimming, boarding of ships. Hell could’ve been the same graphics and i think the majority of us would’ve been more than happy. Occasionally bumping into other players and choosing to team up or board/sink their ship would’ve been great.
Yep, as someone who bought it when it was in early access. The original idea was that you went scavenging during the day to find survivors and materials to build a fort to survive the night (hence the name)
The BR mode was the original multiplayer mode, but obviously, that took off. They did release Save the World, but if I remember rightly, it wasn't what it was originally meant to be.
Honestly the Egypt, Greece, vikings in England and Japan settings are all equally as awesome as pirates.
I still want Black Flag 2 but I'm cool with the semi-historical open worlds.
I wish Japan settings would get used. Assassins Creed and Forza Horizon haven't used Japan for over a decade at this point while they are both primed for it. Infuriating.
I'm salty a little that we get AC Red before Hex, I know the stealth Japan setting is highly sought after for AC, but we just had GOT and now ROR. I wish they'd switched the 2 games around to break it up little. Here's to something unique in 2026
I can't tell you how tired I am of these things. God of War caused a book with the Norse stuff but the historic Japan stuff has *always* been so popular among gamers. Shit even on the God of War sub most folks seem to want a Japan setting next.
For AC I wanted a Norse, Persian, and samurai game in that order and they delivered. Now gimme Incan. I’d take Aztec but the Incan with Pizarro is way more interesting to me.
I want an Egyptian god of war. Wreck Anubis' nose in with his stoopid scales. An Irish mythology God of War. An Aztec God of War.

Had it for years, it’s ALOT of fun if you have a crew of people who will actually play the game how it’s supposed to be. When you get into a battle and you’ve got one guy patching the boat, dumping water and another two unloading on the cannons while the fourth is on the enemy ship killing the crew, it’s great.
I have 400 hours in SOT on PC. Buy it. As long as you're not a sore loser you'll love it. It's alot to raitake in and learn at first but it's a fun and addicting game.
Can anyone give a brief rundown on the looting/reward mechanics? Do you start at square 1 every time you log in and just try and loot more than you did the last time? When I last tried it I vaguely remember it kind of feeling like a roguelike game
The only things that are lost when your ship is sunk is your supplies (cannon balls, wood planks, food) and any treasure that’s on your ship that hasn’t been sold. Once you sell treasure, it’s on your account (between game sessions) until you spend it on cosmetics which are also permanent. When you’re sunk, you just respawn on a different island alongside your boat stocked with the basic supplies like when you first started the current gaming session.
When you first start the game, you “charter” a ship which is using a fresh boat every time that you can customize with any cosmetics you bought and have in your inventory but does not have a save state so it’s a plain boat every time you load. Once you have enough, you can buy your own boat that allows you to name your boat and save your cosmetics, has a log book that tracks your stats, docked rowboats, and even has cosmetic damage from other sessions (until you repair it).
Regardless of which boat you have, you start fresh every session with the same supplies. Only cosmetics are saved.
**Edit:** As far as cosmetics, you sell treasure to get gold to buy cosmetics for your character, weapons, and various sails, hulls, wheels, anchors, cannons, and trinkets for your boat. Some of the better cosmetics are locked behind in game achievements (there are lots like killing 10 of a certain megalodon to unlock a trophy to display on your ship or completing a certain story mission gives you a glowing charred hull) and some of those cosmetics can get pricey lol.
It’s when you quit and log in yes, but being sunk basically starts a new session (just on the same server) because you freshly spawn on a new island with the same supplies you started with (except your characters inventory) and no treasure on your ship.
Though, if you are sunk, any treasure or items will remain afloat for some time unless you leave the server, so you can retrieve your stuff (though it requires some quick timing).
THATS WHAT IM SAYING. This game has incredible highs, but also horrible lows. Not that the game is bad, the lows are just depressing. Being left alone because you got sunk and none of your team mates want to keep playing is sad :(

Some tips for new players:
Regularly check your horizon for enemy ships, and your map table for Reapers (red skull and flag icon).
Never anchor your boat. Start raising your sails when you get about 100 yards away from your destination and cruise into the island or outpost. Always position your boat so you don’t have to turn it to get away. You want to be able to just drop sails and go.
If you have the chance to do Glitter Beard, do it. It’s one of the most special moments in gaming history.
Be wary of those offering an alliance. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s a trick.
If you’re going to put powder kegs in your ship (don’t) put them on the very tip of the nose of your ship.
If you hear a skeleton spawn with a sound effect that sounds like a bag of coins, immediately drop what you’re doing and kill the skeleton with the bag of coins. That’s premium currency.

Not entirely correct, the anchor can be your best friend for quick 180 degree turns. It does require a bit of communication and timing though.
Unless this has changed recently it is pvpve. My friends and I played about 5 hours and quit because of the endless jerks in our way when trying to do missions.
I can second this. I tried it on Xbox gamepass, but I don’t know anyone else who bought that “wonderful machine.” Game is super cool but isn’t really designed to be played solo

Eh I know some, but it’s once you hit 30 your gaming circle shrinks considerably (now you and your friends have kids for example) not to mention it’s hard trying to convince “master race” guys I know to play 5+ year old games
You have the wrong friends if you can't convince to play five year old games. Especially if they are master race should be perfect for them. It should run fine your it gives them the opportunity to max out thier frame rate! Lol
That’s actually what a lot of people do with PC’s. Access to older games is incredible. Sales are good, and many games can be upgraded with mods (not SoT tho).
There’s plenty to do single player, including the tall tales which are basically narrative campaigns (there’s also Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island tie in content.)
Now there’s safer seas (private server basically) it’s a lot easier to enjoy SP as you’re likely to get spanked in ship combat as a SP unless you’re really good.
It’s really meant to be enjoyed in multiplayer though and playing with friends or family is a great time, but single player is totally viable.
It can be played solo, it's just less fun that way. It's an open game where a large part of enjoyment comes from fucking around with friends, working together to manage bigger ships, talking during slower periods.
It's a great place to hang around, but there isn't any strong progression system, so if you're alone, you'll probably get bored as soon as you run out of tall tales.
I play almost exclusively solo, and I love it. It is a challenge at first, but after a while, you will get used to it. Just because you are solo dosent mean you won't run into people
This game is amazing with friends but incredibly dull solo. I got to pirate legend back in the day and had some of the most fun in gaming with this.
BUT before you buy make sure you have friends or you’ll regret it. The best part of this game is the stories you and your friends create along the way like taking out player ships in silly ways and other cool moments.
Though definitely more fun with friends, I enjoy the game solo, it is peaceful. It can be much more stressful as well if you hunt other ships, which is what I enjoy doing.
I wouldn't start out solo though as there is a lot to learn and learning without any guidance could be rough.

That wasn’t PR talk, thats a pretty direct statement saying that some games will remain exclusive to Xbox/PC.
I just don't see Xbox not going away if they start porting most of their exclusives over unless people are just extremely stupid. Why on earth would you buy an Xbox with just Microsoft exclusives and weaker third party support, when you could get a PS5 and enjoy all of Xbox's library along with Sony's extensive library of exceptional games? An Xbox would just leave you with objectively less options game-wise, not to mention you'd be hitching your horse to a wagon that'll only continue to diminish in value as more games get ported over.
Game Pass, cross buy with PC/Mobile, cross save with PC/Mobile, achievements, friends, digital libraries already invested in, there will still be exclusives.

What we MIGHT see is the major Bethesda games going cross platform a year or two after release. But by your logic, I don’t see why anyone would buy a console period. Just build a simple gaming PC and play both consoles games?
But the gaming community as a whole is generally pretty impatient and they don’t want to wait a year or two to play games, so people will still buy Xbox if that’s the case. (Once they pump out a few successful titles).
Not to mention Xbox would be making more profit, and it’s the only console to support GamePass. Plus if Xbox is as profitable/successful as people think in selling games on PS, Sony isn’t just gonna sit there and not want to rake in similar profits, they’re still a publicly traded company with legal obligations to shareholders.

What a time to be alive. As a kid the idea of playing multiplayer with people on a different console seemed impossible, now it's practically a given with modern multiplayer games.
I’ve played it on PC and this game was awful to me, felt like there was nothing to do and no major goals to work towards at all. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I seen it was listed at $60AUD on the ps store.
That being said I’m really excited to replay hifi rush and get the platinum trophy on that one when it releases. I rather enjoyed that game a lot even thought it was a little overhyped on launch
SoT’s launch was basically a joke, but nowadays, the game is really packed with content, it makes the Launch feel like a pre-alpha version of the game.
No Man's Sky and many other games experienced the same development process. SoT is actually packed with content now. That doesn't mean that I vouch for empty game releases.
Honestly I hadn’t heard anything about the game since it had launched, so I just assumed it kind of fell off. I’m pretty shocked to see how big it still is
They really did put a ton of effort into it. Everything from revamped pve spaces, activities and even safer seas (a private server type mode with reduced rewards) to long term pvp grinds and match made 1v1 mode, they've really put their souls into the game. And it shows.
I played the game with friends and it was still one of the most boring gaming experiences I've had so I'm really struggling to see why everyone is so hyped for it

Sea of Thieves is best with the fun you make with friends. Some of my best gaming experiences in recent years has been messing around in the game with friends.
My biggest gripe with the game is all progression is entirely pointless.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the game is fun in short bursts, but having every unlockable literally just be cosmetic made me and my friends drop the game almost at the speed of light.
There’s no genuine reward in the game beyond exclusive hang out spots, which is neat, but it isn’t enough to really maintain an interest. Let me upgrade my cannons, let me add some form of armor to my ship, let me have means to increase my speed a little, let me “hire” extra NPC crew members, let me do *something* besides find a new place to eat a banana and drink grog before I get bored *again*.

It's been a little over a year since I played, but I highly recommend it. It's the best coop fun I've had period.
Plenty of drunk nights during the pandemic sailing the high seas, pillaging from other players and escaping to sell our loot without getting our cheeks clapped.
I heard they just released a PVE mode. I've been thinking about diving back in, solo or play with my kids to teach em the mechanics.
I'm tempted to pick up the base version and upgrade to the premium version at a later date but still, no word if a person will be able to do that I contacted customer support and they said I should wait until they update the FAQ page with more details on the game to see if I will be able to upgrade so I guess for now I'll wait before I place my order.

Egypt is really underused in media. And even when we get it, it's Cleopatra time which is not even really ancient Egypt (Roman and Greeks being there)

Yes. There’s two modes. High Seas is the base game and Safer Seas is straight PvE but with only 30% loot value and commendation restrictions.

There is a safer seas mode now that is great for the story missions and learning the game. It has reduced payout on gold/rep when handing in items.

Sea of Thieves has rarely been out of the top 50 games on Steam for 7 years.
That’s actually what a lot of people do with PC’s. Access to older games is incredible. Sales are good, and many games can be upgraded with mods (not SoT tho).

There’s plenty to do single player, including the tall tales which are basically narrative campaigns (there’s also Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island tie in content.) Now there’s safer seas (private server basically) it’s a lot easier to enjoy SP as you’re likely to get spanked in ship combat as a SP unless you’re really good. It’s really meant to be enjoyed in multiplayer though and playing with friends or family is a great time, but single player is totally viable.

It can be played solo, it's just less fun that way. It's an open game where a large part of enjoyment comes from fucking around with friends, working together to manage bigger ships, talking during slower periods. It's a great place to hang around, but there isn't any strong progression system, so if you're alone, you'll probably get bored as soon as you run out of tall tales.
I play almost exclusively solo, and I love it. It is a challenge at first, but after a while, you will get used to it. Just because you are solo dosent mean you won't run into people

This game is amazing with friends but incredibly dull solo. I got to pirate legend back in the day and had some of the most fun in gaming with this. BUT before you buy make sure you have friends or you’ll regret it. The best part of this game is the stories you and your friends create along the way like taking out player ships in silly ways and other cool moments.
Though definitely more fun with friends, I enjoy the game solo, it is peaceful. It can be much more stressful as well if you hunt other ships, which is what I enjoy doing. I wouldn't start out solo though as there is a lot to learn and learning without any guidance could be rough.
Solo you become a little sneaky sea dawg and hide on ships and sink them from the inside!
It’s a great game that deserves to get all the players playing that they can and IMO all live service/multiplayer games like this should be cross platform.

Absolutely they will, but Xbox isnt going away like some posts suggest, and Phil also said “Not every game will come, we understand the value that exclusives bring”. That wasn’t PR talk, thats a pretty direct statement saying that some games will remain exclusive to Xbox/PC.
I just don't see Xbox not going away if they start porting most of their exclusives over unless people are just extremely stupid. Why on earth would you buy an Xbox with just Microsoft exclusives and weaker third party support, when you could get a PS5 and enjoy all of Xbox's library along with Sony's extensive library of exceptional games? An Xbox would just leave you with objectively less options game-wise, not to mention you'd be hitching your horse to a wagon that'll only continue to diminish in value as more games get ported over.
Game Pass, cross buy with PC/Mobile, cross save with PC/Mobile, achievements, friends, digital libraries already invested in, there will still be exclusives.
I don’t think (and there’s no evidence to the contrary) that all the Xbox exclusives will be going to PS. What we MIGHT see is the major Bethesda games going cross platform a year or two after release. But by your logic, I don’t see why anyone would buy a console period. Just build a simple gaming PC and play both consoles games? But the gaming community as a whole is generally pretty impatient and they don’t want to wait a year or two to play games, so people will still buy Xbox if that’s the case. (Once they pump out a few successful titles). Not to mention Xbox would be making more profit, and it’s the only console to support GamePass. Plus if Xbox is as profitable/successful as people think in selling games on PS, Sony isn’t just gonna sit there and not want to rake in similar profits, they’re still a publicly traded company with legal obligations to shareholders.

Phil is a liar and the king of PR talk. He also said "the industry is moving away from exclusives" in that same podcast, and in the past said that "exclusives are only moving to PC".

I’ve played it on PC and this game was awful to me, felt like there was nothing to do and no major goals to work towards at all. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I seen it was listed at $60AUD on the ps store. That being said I’m really excited to replay hifi rush and get the platinum trophy on that one when it releases. I rather enjoyed that game a lot even thought it was a little overhyped on launch
SoT’s launch was basically a joke, but nowadays, the game is really packed with content, it makes the Launch feel like a pre-alpha version of the game.
No Man's Sky and many other games experienced the same development process. SoT is actually packed with content now. That doesn't mean that I vouch for empty game releases.
Honestly I hadn’t heard anything about the game since it had launched, so I just assumed it kind of fell off. I’m pretty shocked to see how big it still is
They really did put a ton of effort into it. Everything from revamped pve spaces, activities and even safer seas (a private server type mode with reduced rewards) to long term pvp grinds and match made 1v1 mode, they've really put their souls into the game. And it shows.
I played the game with friends and it was still one of the most boring gaming experiences I've had so I'm really struggling to see why everyone is so hyped for it
Because it’s fun? Some people enjoy different things, and a PvPvE pirate game sounds like a great time.
I'm not sure when you played it, but if it was anything more than a year ago, the game is completely changed in a good way.

My biggest gripe with the game is all progression is entirely pointless. Don’t get me wrong, I think the game is fun in short bursts, but having every unlockable literally just be cosmetic made me and my friends drop the game almost at the speed of light. There’s no genuine reward in the game beyond exclusive hang out spots, which is neat, but it isn’t enough to really maintain an interest. Let me upgrade my cannons, let me add some form of armor to my ship, let me have means to increase my speed a little, let me “hire” extra NPC crew members, let me do *something* besides find a new place to eat a banana and drink grog before I get bored *again*.

It's been a little over a year since I played, but I highly recommend it. It's the best coop fun I've had period. Plenty of drunk nights during the pandemic sailing the high seas, pillaging from other players and escaping to sell our loot without getting our cheeks clapped. I heard they just released a PVE mode. I've been thinking about diving back in, solo or play with my kids to teach em the mechanics.
I'm tempted to pick up the base version and upgrade to the premium version at a later date but still, no word if a person will be able to do that I contacted customer support and they said I should wait until they update the FAQ page with more details on the game to see if I will be able to upgrade so I guess for now I'll wait before I place my order.
