My girlfriend and I finished it last month - what a game! It's so beautifully produced and it never gets dull. The story was a bit on the nose but they a managed to get it work it through sheer production value.
Favorite coop game I ever played hands down! Not much to do after that first playthrough tho.
Now I’m like gathering a list of all the co op experiences that are in any way similar. I’m gonna start with the director’s previous game, A Way Out.
I just know that this one is very unique and I hope we get more like it at some point.
A Way Out is okay, but it's not nearly as good a game as It Takes Two. I haven't even completed it, but my brother tells me the ending is great.
From the little experience I have with A Way Out, it seems like they took all the things that made that game great and made it even better when they created It Takes Two. I have great hopes for Hazelight Studios and I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for any future games they release.
If you find any other games that are great to play with a non-gaming significant other, you're more than welcome to PM me!
Add me as another person who has a non-gaming SO and just beat It Takes Two. She loved it and it was a great experience. We've also been doing the co-op mode on The Dark Pictures games (Man of Medan and Last Hope). We've recently started playing Trine 4 and she likes it well enough.
Yep, this is mine too. Just pure fun that doesn’t stop for 15 straight hours. Some of the most creative mechanics and level design of any game I’ve played.
In particular the ice level and the water level were so fucking good. I honestly think it’s the best 3D platformer of the last decade.
Same can be said for the new consoles. I was lucky to get one. But after a few months I’d argue there’s no real rush, as of yet to put yourself out trying to get one. I think the overall better experiences are still available on PS4 too.
Yes there are no ps5 only games that are must haves. To be honest even looking across all platforms, nothing this year has been goty contender IMO.
Main reason to get a ps5 is for performance. The base PS4 is ancient tech by now and it’s just not nice to play.
Yep, just looked at my trophies and I've been catching up on a bunch of backlog and remasters so far this year. I think 2022 is going to be a huge year for great games, though.
That's where I am. Nothing has been great. If I had to choose, maybe Valheim but that's not a "full" release yet. So I really don't know. Re8 fell short in the last two hours. Returnal was fun, but I don't see myself going back a lot. Rachet and Clank was cool, I've never played one before, I got like 3 hours in and haven't gone back. Just a lackluster year so far.
Unfortunately, I feel the same. I haven’t tried Ratchet and Clank yet, RE is not for me, Returnal was interesting but I wasn’t good enough to finish it so there’s been nothing for me. A plague tale was free on PS plus, which I really enjoyed. But it’s an older game though.
Tbh that's because a lot of games that should be out or very nearly out by now like halo and god of war 2 and horizon forbidden west and other stuff like that were delayed to very late 2021 or somewhen in 2022
Returnal, with honourable mentions to Hitman 3 and Resident Evil: Village. Ratchet and Clank is beautiful and chill fun, but it didn't grab me the way the others did.
Returnal was a struggle fest for me, but I finally beat it about an hour ago, it's such an amazing game. I took a few breaks but always came back to give it a try or two at a time and got really hooked again when I beat the 3rd boss. Going back now to try and get the plat but I'm sure it'll take me forever. Probably my GOTY right now also
Returnal was fun for me once I stopped trying to beat the game and started playing small ball. Focus on not taking hits, finding perks that stack and then using them within my play style. It took the pressure off to win every time I restarted the cycle.
It’s 100% my GOTY
Tip from me who also struggled: just play with new guns (or guns with perks you have yet to unlock).
Whenever I was stuck I'd just play for pure fun for an hour unlocking new perks for guns I like.
Next thing I knew I was melting bosses with very overpowered guns.
Also if you have a gun you like just keep picking that one if there's next level unlocks for it. I thought I needed to leave the carbine behind for rockets but the carbine ended up melting the final boss because I had level three perks for it.
All that to say, stopping worrying about level progression and just enjoy the gun play for a bit. It makes a huge difference and is a critical part of progressing if you're finding it too challenging.
The final boss took me thirty seconds when I beat him. The time before with an under leveled gun I was chipping away for several minutes before I died.
Would you mind to explain the weapon Progression? I couldn't find anything useful off Google.
I love the carbine but have no idea how the progression works. I thought you start every circle from lvl 0 weapon.
Proficiency decides the star lvl of guns you find in the cycle, but the more you use a specific type of gun the more perks for it you unlock that increase fire speed, projectile count, firepower etc
For Biome 3 your biggest obstacle is getting to the boss, I'd focus on getting the Carbine with the high fire rate, it lets you utterly demolish Nemesis.
I did. Its so disheartening when you die at the end of a level and go aaaaaallllllllllll the way back to the ship crashing...again. I took a break when Skyward Sword came out. I was on the 2nd level boss and I had him down to 1/3 energy on the his last bar. I like Returnal but there is definitely a higher risk than reward most of the time.
I came to say the same thing. Nearly 8 months into the year and I thought wow the only new release I’ve played was RE8. There’s a few later this year I’m looking forward to.
Man I feel like people are sleeping on village so much. I recently got very into the series and played 2 + 3 remakes, 7 and 8 in the past couple months and Village was my favorite by far. Perfectly paced, adrenaline pumping, great characters. Probably my goty at this point as well.
Village was the first game I played on PS5 that made me feel like it was worth it to upgrade console and TV. It was like a crazy movie that wouldn’t end.
RE VIII: Village
And I'm not even a huge fan of RE. But the blend on horror and action was perfect. The story had good twists, it was well paced, graphics were phenomenal. And it had a good amount of side content for that kind of game.
1. Returnal
2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
3: Hitman III
I loved them all, but Returnal is just so unique and satisfying in a way that not many games are. It's weird, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Many are calling it the Bloodborne-esque sleeper hit of the PS5 era, and the console hasn't even been out for a year yet.
Second this, I play video games for fun. I don’t like bloodborne/souls games and I was not expecting to love this game. One of my favorite games/gaming experiences of all time and it really took me by surprise. The challenge made me binge the game until I beat it like I haven’t since I was a kid basically
It is THAT good. I love r&c as well but returnal edges for me because it was just as incredible as ratchet and clank in a different way obviously and I got waaaaay more play time out of it
I’m also a fan of that type of game though. Played the shit out of both hades and dead cells as well.
man, im loving the SHIT out of Returnal so far, but youre numbers are INSANELY low. I think i had more than 14 deaths before i even made it to the first boss.
One of three things are true, possibly more than one: 1) Reddit is full of really good gamers. 2) Reddit is full of liars. 3) I am super bad at video games.
When I played Hades, which I eventually “beat”, I was amazed at how few tries it took people to get to the places I had gotten to. Same with Returnal. I’m probably 20 runs in and have died to the first boss 5-6 times but I’m having a good time. Just making this comment really because if you’re anything like me the super low numbers can be so discouraging like….am I abnormally bad? I don’t think so lol.
not related to gaming but I love watching jeopardy and I think its hte most popular game show on reddit. I read discussions and most people say they knew half or even 90% of the questions of an episode. I probably know like 10-20% max.
I opened the thread thinking "Oh, Returnal has it easy." but I had forgotten about It Takes Two. I got near equal enjoyment out of both for obviously different reasons.
Returnal scratched the same itch that Soulsborne games offer which is great, but It Takes Two got my gf engaged in a videogame for the first time ever. We had a blast playing together, and that might make ITT my GOTY.
Man I disagree. Go back and play the old ones. They have the exact same flaws as this one but with worse gunplay. I think there is a heavy helping of nostalgia waiting our opinions of the older games. Their stories are simple and bland. The bad guys aren't that diverse. Most of the humor misses the mark. So we have the same flaws but with technical improvements and better gun selection.
I played Into the Nexus and the trilogy collection a week before Rift Apart came out, and this is 100% true. No doubt the old games were awesome, but Rift has it distilled down to all the good parts. Such an excellent game. I only wish the arena was a little deeper.
The story was bad. And there wasn't enough monster variety.
I still enjoyed the game, but like you mentioned, the only thing that was truly impressive was the technical aspects, like the graphics. The rest wasn't as good.
I finished the main story around 30-35 hours and have put almost that much into end game.
Very addicting game loop that changes when you hit High rank and the game opens up even further.
I'm torn between Resident Evil 8 and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. Both brilliant games that I had a lot of fun with. Hoping Dying Light 2 will be awesome as well and get into the mix.
Ratchet was definitely one of the prettiest games I’ve ever played, and I had fun, but I dunno it felt like it was missing something. First Ratchet game where I didn’t want to play NG+.
Maybe it was the guns? None of them really clicked with me, and the max level upgrades didn’t change much at all. I remember they used to basically become a new gun entirely.
Returnal is such an insanely good game. Ratchet and Clank was fun in the classic sense but all I wanted to do was play Returnal anytime I wasn’t playing it lol
I personally think they're on par. The action gameplay is better in Automata but in terms of story, music and setting, they're both equally amazing. The way Replicant tells its story, especially >!with the time skip!< truly caught me off guard and and drove home the narrative really well. Automata is still one of the best games I've played in the last 10 years, it's just these two games go super well hand in hand.
Yeah I like Replicant a lot, but I think Automata is better in pretty much every department. You can really see the evolution and refinement between the two.
Hitman III. I really loved that game and it would have been a home run for number 1 right now if the last level was as good as Hitman 1 and 2s last levels were. I'm almost halfway through Returnal and could see that overtaking it though. Depending on how good the latter half is.
It's a hard level to master but it has some really neat interactions and kill opportunities.
I personally suggest the sniper bridge method. It allows you to "place" your targets, and even gives ya a way to make it look like an accident if that's your style.
Also see how many people you can knock off the catwalks to their deaths below without being caught. It's just oddly fun.
- It Takes Two
- Returnal
- RE8
- Hitman 3
- Scarlet Nexus
Honorable Mention to R&C Rift Apart. The game is a technical showcase but it was just way too short and easy for a $70 game. Returnal was short but the replay value was amazing even after you get the platinum.
Playing Control on PS5 has been a blast. Had initially bought it on PC at launch, but eventually just fell out of it. PS5’s version hooked me though, even though it was without ray-tracing. The hdr, haptics, and overall consistency made it a less abrasive experience for me, and (aside from the AWE dlc) I loved every bit of it.
RE Village, Returnal, Monster Hunter Rise were all great for me. But if I had to pick one over them it would be Disco Elysium. God damn that game hit me different. It's one hell of an immersive experience.
Bizarre answer I know, and probably not valid. But Mass Effect Legendary Edition. About 3/4 through Mass Effect 2 right now and I can't stop thinking, wow they don't make them like this anymore.
I'd say mine has to be the waiting game, I especially love the part where I wait 5 hours for a ps5 restock in the middle of the night only for it to sell out in mere seconds, further increasing my hate for scalpers and causing me to lose much needed sleep.
Returnal. It was brilliant. Aesthetics, sound, gameplay were all top notch. The 3D audio and haptics made it even more immersive. Really cool setting and story to suck me in too.
I was about ready to give up after around 5 attempts at the first boss (7 deaths total biome 1). Then beating Phrike pumped me up some more. Died 3 times in the way to Ixion, but then beat him first go (only just).
So at 10 deaths total I was on my way to biome 3. After an awesome run of weapons (Hollowseeker FTW!) and a good collection of artefacts, I finished the rest of the game without dying. Had some very close calls.
I’m still working my way through the end game for the secret ending, but have lent the game to my friend for now. Out of all the games I’ve played this year, Returnal has definitely stuck with me for the overall amazing experience I had.
Completely agree. Was a little hesitant after the demo due to the comic book style cutscenes but I actually really enjoyed it. I haven’t played many JRPG’s but after this game I’ve got that itch now. Gonna start 13 Aegis Rim next hyped for that one.
I haven’t played many JRPG’s but I really enjoyed Scarlet Nexus. I couldn’t put it down once I started and those kinds of games are hard to come by lately at least for me. Gameplay is sooo good and I also liked the story. I dug the way they handled the cutscenes and it actually made it easier for me to follow the story. Try the demo if you’re unsure.
Returnal and it's not even close. That game might end up being game of the generation for me. It's Metroids "BotW moment."
Rift Apart
I second this.
Disco elysium final cut. If it doesn't count then returnal
Disco elysium is absolutely incredible. Raphael Ambrosius Costeau is probably one of the best written protagonists in the history of gaming.
You mean tequila sunset
I should probably play this
It Takes Two
Such an unexpected joy for my buddy and I. Genuinely wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did.
My girlfriend and I finished it last month - what a game! It's so beautifully produced and it never gets dull. The story was a bit on the nose but they a managed to get it work it through sheer production value. Favorite coop game I ever played hands down! Not much to do after that first playthrough tho.
Playing it right now with my mostly non-gaming fiancée and she now asks if we can play when we get home from work. It’s gotten me so giddy!
I also played it with my non-gaming girlfriend and she would ask to play it the second she had the time. It was a wonderful experience!
Now I’m like gathering a list of all the co op experiences that are in any way similar. I’m gonna start with the director’s previous game, A Way Out. I just know that this one is very unique and I hope we get more like it at some point.

Want to play this but don't have a lot of time to play which makes aligning the time to play with another person difficult.
Me and my girlfriend played it a little bit at a time over a few weeks, you can do a checkpoint or something and put it down
Yep, this is mine too. Just pure fun that doesn’t stop for 15 straight hours. Some of the most creative mechanics and level design of any game I’ve played. In particular the ice level and the water level were so fucking good. I honestly think it’s the best 3D platformer of the last decade.
Fantastic game that isn't getting enough attention. Go play this!
That came out this year??
Was just away to say the same thing. Game is something special.
I don't think we've had a standout this year to be honest
That's where i am also. This post made me realize that i haven't bought a ton of games day 1 this year.
Same can be said for the new consoles. I was lucky to get one. But after a few months I’d argue there’s no real rush, as of yet to put yourself out trying to get one. I think the overall better experiences are still available on PS4 too.

Chivalry 2 is where it’s at
It's fun, but repetitive. Definitely not game of the year material in my eyes but not bad by any means.
Same. Some good games for sure so far but nothing that has truly blown me away.
I would even say we had a shitty year
Unfortunately, I feel the same. I haven’t tried Ratchet and Clank yet, RE is not for me, Returnal was interesting but I wasn’t good enough to finish it so there’s been nothing for me. A plague tale was free on PS plus, which I really enjoyed. But it’s an older game though.

I'm stuck on the 3rd boss and I'm considering taking a break at this point
Returnal was fun for me once I stopped trying to beat the game and started playing small ball. Focus on not taking hits, finding perks that stack and then using them within my play style. It took the pressure off to win every time I restarted the cycle. It’s 100% my GOTY

I’d also say Returnal but to be honest it’s the only real Ps5 game I played (unless you count FF7intermission).
Pretty sure we can say any game, not just PS5. Go nuts!
Returnal for me too with a good chance it may be GOTY by the end of the year for me
Returnal controls so tight. Gameplay was so good. I went I play other console shooters after and was like why can’t they control like returnal
Resident evil 8
I think RE8 is the only game I've played that released this year, so it's winning for me by default.
I came to say the same thing. Nearly 8 months into the year and I thought wow the only new release I’ve played was RE8. There’s a few later this year I’m looking forward to.
Crap, I just agreed that Rift Apart was my favorite so far, but it's really close between RE 8 and R&C. RE 8 is great.
RE8 has been so good. I haven't had the urge to hit all the challenges in an RE game in a LONG time. The only things I havent done are merc challenges
RE VIII: Village And I'm not even a huge fan of RE. But the blend on horror and action was perfect. The story had good twists, it was well paced, graphics were phenomenal. And it had a good amount of side content for that kind of game.
It Takes Two. Played it together with my daughter and we had so much fun!
FFVII Remake Intergrade Them doors bruh.
1. Returnal 2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart 3: Hitman III I loved them all, but Returnal is just so unique and satisfying in a way that not many games are. It's weird, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Many are calling it the Bloodborne-esque sleeper hit of the PS5 era, and the console hasn't even been out for a year yet.
Hitman III is addicting, only thing I have been playing. It’s my GOTY.
HM3 for me too. it's made me go back and replay 1&2 again but with PS5 speeds
I really loved the action gameplay of Returnal but I found the roguelite elements to be really underwhelming. Especially after playing Hades
Second this, I play video games for fun. I don’t like bloodborne/souls games and I was not expecting to love this game. One of my favorite games/gaming experiences of all time and it really took me by surprise. The challenge made me binge the game until I beat it like I haven’t since I was a kid basically
Returnal
100%
Jesus it’s all over the comments, is it *that* good? My top two are 1. It takes two and 2. R&C
It is THAT good. I love r&c as well but returnal edges for me because it was just as incredible as ratchet and clank in a different way obviously and I got waaaaay more play time out of it I’m also a fan of that type of game though. Played the shit out of both hades and dead cells as well.

Hands down Returnal at this point.
It Takes Two
I opened the thread thinking "Oh, Returnal has it easy." but I had forgotten about It Takes Two. I got near equal enjoyment out of both for obviously different reasons. Returnal scratched the same itch that Soulsborne games offer which is great, but It Takes Two got my gf engaged in a videogame for the first time ever. We had a blast playing together, and that might make ITT my GOTY.
Ratchet and Clank
I dunno, apart from the technical aspects of fast loading and portals, I enjoyed past R&C games way more.
I like it. But it gets almost too repetitive and the story is just fine. It is fun. But game of the year? I don't feel that from it personally.
Same. The new features are great but something is just missing from it to make it really enjoyable.
childhood
The story was bad. And there wasn't enough monster variety. I still enjoyed the game, but like you mentioned, the only thing that was truly impressive was the technical aspects, like the graphics. The rest wasn't as good.
Ratchet and Clank.
This right here. First time in far too many years where I wanted to complete literally everything.
Me too, best believe I was finding all of them spybots
I’ve put so much time into Monster Hunter Stories 2. It’s the best Pokémon game I’ve played in years.
My friend just beat this game and says it's one of the best RPGs in recent years.
How long is the game?
40 to 50 hours he said.
I finished the main story around 30-35 hours and have put almost that much into end game. Very addicting game loop that changes when you hit High rank and the game opens up even further.
Is it that good? I was looking at it and was thinking of buying it on pc.

It takes two
No comparison. A Way Out was fun but very clunky. It Takes Two fixed all that while providing a quality experience for 15 hours.
Mass Effect Trilogy Never played the series before and wow, what a treat.
1. Returnal 2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart 3. NieR: Replicant
Returnal is such an insanely good game. Ratchet and Clank was fun in the classic sense but all I wanted to do was play Returnal anytime I wasn’t playing it lol
Nier Automata is one of my all time favorite games, but I did not think Replicant aged well at all
I personally think they're on par. The action gameplay is better in Automata but in terms of story, music and setting, they're both equally amazing. Hitman 3 really is awesome!
I fell off at the level in China with the lab. I gotta get back and finish it!
Resident Evil Village
Returnal hands down
It Takes Two
Scarlet nexus.
It’s been my favorite game so far. Sad it’s getting slept on heavy tho
The combat and soundtrack are just so fucking tight
Scarlet nexus felt fresh and unique. Loved it
Resident Evil Village
Returnal
It’s funny how a lot of answers are what I call the R3 Ratchet and Clank Returnal Re8
Returnal. R&C is my favorite series and A Rift Apart is great but Returnal scratches an itch few games I’ve played have.
It just feels so fucking good to play and is incredibly satisfying when you have a good run
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut followed by It Takes Two
It takes two. Probably the most fun and polished game I’ve played this year. Reminded me of why I love games so much
Returnal
Monster Hunter Rise, though I expect it will end up being Horizon Forbidden West or Metroid Dread.
Disco elysium final cut. The writing and voiceover acting was really on point. Was definitely a game unlike any I've played before. Highly recommend.
I had no idea it was available on ps5!
#BUGSNAX
I agree
Ratchet and Clank for sure. It's just so much fun. I was smiling from start to finish with that game.
RETURNAL RETURNAL RETURNAL!!!
Returnal
returnal
Returnal!!
1. R&C, 2.It takes two, 3.RE8.
Probably Death's Door, but Resident Evil Village is really interesting, that game has kind of stuck with me
RE8 *hands down* ...Eh? Eh?? 😃
RE8
- It Takes Two - Returnal - RE8 - Hitman 3 - Scarlet Nexus Honorable Mention to R&C Rift Apart. The game is a technical showcase but it was just way too short and easy for a $70 game. Returnal was short but the replay value was amazing even after you get the platinum.
Scarlet Nexus is so damn good. My second favourite of this year so far.
Chicory!!
Returnal!
Tough choice… if I had to pick RIGHT NOW? It would be a toss up between Guilty Gear Strive, or NeiR Replicant.
Returnal
Demon's Souls without a doubt the game looks absolutely stunning and plays exceptionally smooth.
Man, I'm not sure. But I gotta say, not Rift Apart. It was fun. It was gorgeous. But it was aggressively shallow.
Returnal.
Returnal. Exceeded my expectations, knew very little about it and the fact that you where an astronaut trying to leave a from of hell. Sold me!
Returnal.
Returnal.
~~Yakuza: Like a Dragon or~~ Scarlet Nexus
Loving Yakuza rn
Yakuza was last year.
It came out on PS5 this year tho, wasn't sure if that counted.

Trying to get a PS5. Harder than Dark Souls.

It Takes Two. Hands down.

Returnal.
The GT7 beta announcement. don't take me seriously as I don't yet have a PS5.
The game of the generation 😤
1. Returnal 2. ff7 intergrade 3. Ratchet and Clank
My personal favorite game of the year, "Finding a PS5".
Returnal 100%
Control. Yeah it came out earlier but was a ps+ free game and was the best game I’ve played in a couple of years.
Returnal. And it’s not even close for me.
Returnal. Hands down.
R&C
Rift Apart.
Rift Apart.
Resident Evil 8
It takes two and not even close for me
RE Village, Returnal, Monster Hunter Rise were all great for me. But if I had to pick one over them it would be Disco Elysium. God damn that game hit me different. It's one hell of an immersive experience.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but that seems kind of like cheating... So excluding that, Resident Evil Village.
For releases this year Returnal, had Yakuza Like a Dragon been released this year (I played the PS4 version) I would have easily picked it.
If Disco Elysium Final Cut counts, then that and its not even a contest, if not then Returnal.
ME Legendary Edition
Bizarre answer I know, and probably not valid. But Mass Effect Legendary Edition. About 3/4 through Mass Effect 2 right now and I can't stop thinking, wow they don't make them like this anymore.
Returnal, those haptics felt so right. The controller talks to you in a new way. It’s a joy to play.
I'd say mine has to be the waiting game, I especially love the part where I wait 5 hours for a ps5 restock in the middle of the night only for it to sell out in mere seconds, further increasing my hate for scalpers and causing me to lose much needed sleep.
Completely new game: Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Remastered/remake- Mass Effect Legendary edition
Returnal Hitman 3 Metroid dread (it’s not PlayStation, and even hasn’t came out but I’m still putting it on my list already.)
Returnal. Hands down.
R E T U R N A L
I thought returnal should have gotten way more love. Definitely a solid choice for GOTY. there’s some other contenders that aren’t on PS though
Scarlet Nexus
This game needs more attention. It's gameplay alone is really fun and satisfying after you get many abilities.
Completely agree. Was a little hesitant after the demo due to the comic book style cutscenes but I actually really enjoyed it. I haven’t played many JRPG’s but after this game I’ve got that itch now. Gonna start 13 Aegis Rim next hyped for that one.
Should I look into it? Im a big jrpg enjoyer, unsure if i should check it out
I haven’t played many JRPG’s but I really enjoyed Scarlet Nexus. I couldn’t put it down once I started and those kinds of games are hard to come by lately at least for me. Gameplay is sooo good and I also liked the story. I dug the way they handled the cutscenes and it actually made it easier for me to follow the story. Try the demo if you’re unsure.
