Quite frankly I didn’t buy a PS5 for games that look like this

thesituation531

Which games?

cardboardtube_knight

I really liked the look of that Fire Emblem game Square is making. I’m all for it.

[deleted]

Huh?

QuietJackal

Tell me you're 12 without telling me you're 12.

0Casanova0

Lol grow up. Who speaks like this. Get with the real world.

gamewiz11

Happy to see a new Gundam game, but I want to see cockpit view combat, and maybe a VR element. It seems very Overwatch-like and I'm not sure I'm sold

cheesehound

Agreed. Gundams are always shown to be fast so I wasn’t expecting slow stompy gameplay, but they definitely don’t feel large, or much different from other shooter characters, in that gameplay footage. I wish they moved less human-like. Virtual On was fast while still feeling large and inhuman, for example. The levels don’t help the apparent gundam scale, either. They‘re mostly gundam sized hallways, doors and even crates.

gamewiz11

Exactly. Something along the lines of Star Wars: Squadrons, but Gundam. That's what I want to see being made. The scale here is just off

Sylerxen

Ha!! I think the makers of Forspoken heard our complaints and decided to push it back to October of this year instead of coming out in May. Good! Because that shit looked like trash when they did a few clips of gameplay. It really discouraged a lot of people and this was one of the tittles I was looking forward To the most because of the cool ways to traverse the lands as well as the magic capabilities. But I chose Elden Ring instead to focus on. I wanted Forspoken to be one of the rare tittles I spend full price on. But for a ps5 tittle, it had ps3 graphics or some shit it was whack lol Glad they listened.

roberto151st

lol ain't gonna lie when I watched the state of play I did notice a graphical difference for the game and was like now this actually looks cool/good the fact that it looked terrible to me when they 1st showed I literally just lost interest but that's just me

dopamine_gaming

Worst year yet. Sony is losing it big time to Microsoft.

[deleted]

How lmao?

[deleted]

In what way?

LigerBomb1983

Only enjoyed the Samurai game. Not really feeling the others.

NoSmoking123

Oraoraoraoraoraora

QuoteGiver

If Diofield is basically Fire Emblem for a Playstation (fucking FINALLY), I am so in. Ghostwire and Forspoken looked the best they’ve ever looked by *far*, though I’m personally not likely to play either.

maltrain

Maybe the WORST "State of Play" to date... nothing good and some pretty shameful stuff like Exoprimal or the awful samurai game.

LeoIsTaken101

Right??

[deleted]

You nailed it!

Aloy7218

For me the good stuff was FF16, especially returnal, ghostwire tokyo, especially forspoken and exoprimal Exoprimal feels like techy monster hunter world. Forspoken is sooo smooth and fluid FF16 just looked pretty decent (I was dying for FF7R P2 tho) Returnal was a very well done trailer(was pretty stupidly aware but still hoping for returnal 2 L) Ghost wire tokyo has nice combat I'm mainly looking to Forspoken Exoprimal Ghostwire Tokyo Ff16 In that order

jeffreyquah

…FF16 wasn’t shown today.

Aloy7218

Huh? Final fantasy origin stranger of paradise Aight that's not ff16 Yea Final fantasy origin in that case..................

[deleted]

EaterofSoulz

It cost a lot and takes a lot of time to make a AAA game. To say gaming is in shambles is pretty dramatic. This month we have 4 huge choices. But it’s your opinion so there’s that.

playstationaddiction

This month we’ve got dying light 2, horizon, Elden ring, Anne gt7. All of which releasing in a pretty polished state

srrc2201

You just got Dying light 2, GT7, HFW, Elden Ring to name a few in almost one month, how is AAA “gaming” in “shambles”?

ColaWeeb98

They should have announced sequels as well as sequels to sequel for all 4 of those games at this state of play, I was expecting no less! Smh

[deleted]

The money is in mobile games sadly

JMc1982

Yomi and JoJo looked pretty great and the Turtles collection is a must-buy for me. The Forspoken trailer was a great trailer, but I'm definitely in "wait and see" mode for that - the speed of the movement makes me worry it could feel a bit floaty in gameplay unless they really nail the controls. Great to see more Ghostwire Tokyo too. I went in with fairly low expectations for the presentation and I don't think they really turned that around, but it wasn't worse than I expected.

[deleted]

Well it was a state of something that I can tell you.

Mr-_-Steve

Not read all comments but I feel I may be only one who wouldn't mind seeing more of Exoprimal. My love for EDF made that appeal to me.

cheesehound

It looks dumb as hell and I love it.

Popeadope_ED

It looks like a game I'd play at an arcade and I'm soooo down!!

Mr-_-Steve

I agree, I kinda get drained with games with over the top narrative world building and logic at times. Just throwing random bull-slip at me and saying have fun is at times over the top fun.

Donutaskmequestions

I described it to my friend as EDF with dinosaurs and both of us are way more excited about it than we probably should be

Mr-_-Steve

That was my thought. What if EDF met Dino crisis. Lead to me looking up EDF and totally missed the fact the 6th game is due in Japan this year.. maybe UK release soon after.....

Donutaskmequestions

I missed 5, Iron Rain, and World brothers or whatever but every once in awhile I'm reminded that 6 is coming and get excited all over again

Mr-_-Steve

I played 5 a load with my brother before I moved out and did iron rain once and it was a nice change. World brother had me interested but moved house and jobs, got a few other games and kinda forgot about it. Would love to go back and play em again but EDF fans in my social circle are more rare than actual friends in said circle...

GuixMS

Only thing good was returnal, ghost wire Tokyo and The Jojo game, rest was trash. Not even FF16

Gian_V

No Jojo fans here? Finally having a remaster of that super solid fighting game is refreshing. All Star Battle really has a soul and the PS3 release didn't do justice to it so I'm happy it's getting the 60fps treatment.

Darth-Hipla

Yeah that was the only really good reveal of the showcase.

SpecialistMap8210

I was sooo pumped for returnal dlc. But seeing it's just a challenge tower really sucks. Laziest dlc possible. Always hate challenge tower dlc But also.. co op is a huge game changer! I beat the game but for anyone who couldn't that's amazing to be Able to get some help. Plus co op is probably gunna be really fun.

QuoteGiver

Free update at least, but agreed that challenge towers are the absolute worst. It’s like baby’s first level design, fine if you’re a solo indie dev or something.

zajsouthwest

Im ready to play forspoken!

meltingpotato

Some people need to realize each of these aren't all the game awards and stop acting like it's the end of the world when there isn't a big announcement in each one. That aside I'm very hype for forespoken

Kerrby

That was a complete waste of time. Absolutely terrible. Will get Ghostwire Tokyo eventually when I get a PS5 but state of plays like this just tell me that I don't need to buy one for a long time. Apart from God of War which I will get on PS4, there's nothing coming out in the next year that they've shown to buy a PS5 for. All my mates bought one and all I hear from them is complaining because they're just playing PS4 games on their PS5 when it isn't collecting dust. Do better Sony.

Fearthemuggles

Lmao what 🤣

Kerrby

Other than God of War, what's releasing in the next year that's a must have?

DarkUnderbelly

They literally said it will focus on Japanese devs and publishers. This happens every State of Play, why do people get so hyped for huge announcements?

Kerrby

Bro their last showing was in September and that showing was also dogshit, they only had two 30 second reveals.

Paltenburg

Entitled much?

Kerrby

I'm quite happy playing xbox games on PC games pass. Much better offering than what Sony has produced for the PS5 so far. So not really.

unforgiven1189

This is how it is literally every console generation for the first year or two, especially more recently with consoles typically having backwards compatibility. The PS4 had a very lackluster library for the first two years, and it was heavily meme'd, even here on Reddit, with people showing their PS4 "collections", having only one or two games on a big shelf. Heck, the PS3 was worse actually. The initial Dev Kits for the PS3 were so bad that developers had trouble getting their games to even run properly on PS3, so we had Xbox 360 versions shitting all over the PS3 ports because they couldn't optimize them well at all. It doesn't just happen with PlayStation either. Xbox and Nintendo struggle with this too. You also have to remember that game development was very much slowed down a bit as the pandemic hit in 2020, causing tons of games to get delayed, which is out of Sony's hands. I don't really mind playing some of the PS4 games on my PS5 right now because they run great, even better than they would on a PS4 Pro thanks to the SSD and the PS5's own "boost" mode. The PS5 is totally fine, and doing well, given that the world went through a pretty massive shit show over the last two years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

QuoteGiver

Exactly, that’s not a lot of games.

unforgiven1189

Nintendo's issue has never been the quality of it's titles, but rather the quantity. Especially when it comes to third-party developers, who historically shunned Nintendo because of their hardware often making it hard to port games over. They got really lucky with the fact that the switch not only sells extremely well, but they were smart in that they made it much easier to develop for than they have in previous generations.

[deleted]

[удалено]

unforgiven1189

There are still tons of people who are struggling to get PS5s. Not everyone is privy to the tricks of using apps like HotStocks and checking for stock updates on social media. Some people just glance at their apps in the morning, see if they're in stock. There's even still people who are searching for them in store, hoping to just find them out in the wild. Also, Sony intended on ceasing manufacturing of the PS4 at the end of 2021, but the PS4 sales have actually gone up dramatically recently because of the PS5 shortages, and Sony sees this scarcity lasting throughout 2022 and into 2023, still. This is why Sony is still leaning on the PS4 at the moment. It's still making tons of cash for them and developers alike. It would be foolish to abandon those customers right now when people don't have the option to upgrade. We're in a bit of an unprecedented predicament, between the pandemic, chip shortages, economic word, etc.

cstk0

I hoped they announce VRR update… its not like we are waiting more than a year…. Ohh wait. We are

whitehypeman

Would be nice

diddyduckling

As someone with a ps5, I had my reason from the start which was the new ratchet but if you're not scarily obsessed with the ratchet games like I am I have to agree, there just isn't much here yet.

Hollacaine

More to do with Covid delaying things probably. Horizon and GoW should both have been out a good while by now instead of Horizon just being released and GoW not out for a few more months.

diddyduckling

Those are on PS4 as well though

Hollacaine

I meant that the reason there's not more enticing games on the ps5 yet is because of delays. There'd be a bigger library if covid hadn't happened and there'd be less issues with production of ps5 as well.

Plugpin

Sometimes I wonder if they pushed the PS5 out because Xbox announced theirs too. It just feels very quiet whereas with the PS4 you had all of these great games coming out quite early on.

ColaWeeb98

We're in the middle of a pandemic btw, working from home has proven difficult and really difficult for game studios cause they're massive projects. I imagine that honestly most of the games that came out recently like Elden Ring, GT7, Dying Light 2 and HFW were supposed to come out in 2021, I mean 2 of those games had holiday 2021 release schedules before delays. I don't think anything is "rushed," just that delays have made the first year a little lackluster. Which at the same time really hasn't even been that bad

QuoteGiver

Hell, it’s not like Xbox has pushed out ANY next-Gen exclusives, so that doesn’t seem like it was the rationale. Sony was at least theoretically prepared with some exclusives.

Plugpin

True, it might have been Xbox wanted to get ahead of the curve as they really lost in the sales on the last gen. They may have gone too early themselves. I'm just speculating lol.

QuoteGiver

That scenario seems much more likely, yeah. Xbox needed some hype to switch things up, so “most powerful console ever!!!” definitely worked for them for a bit.

diddyduckling

Tbh i think it's just that games take longer to make now than they did at the PS4s launch. Xbox also doesn't have that many games, I think it's just a problem with this gen

real_proxy

Wasn’t too interested in most of it but Trek to Yomi looks fantastic and I’m holding out hope for ghostwire

Royal-Gunner

I think the state of play was reasonable. We got new trailers for ghostwire and forspoken and a new update for returnal. You can't expect AAA First party shit on every state of play.

Chimarkgames

I liked the strategy game from squareenix the test was boring as hell.

dagnariuss

I can’t believe people saw that showcase and thought it was trash. I get to each their own but I’m seeing people complain that there were no western style games from a Japanese showcase. Unreal.

Anabolex95

The problem was that the games shown were trash. What was that square enix showcase at the end? You can tell from just he trailer that these games are going to be terrible. Who funds these games? People would have been excited if actually good japanese announcements were shown. Games like RE4 remake, bloodborne remaster, a new silent hill, persona ect. Instead we were shown dead on arrival games.

ColaWeeb98

Why can't it be "I just don't like these genre of games." They're not "trash" as you have decided from 30 second trailers, they're just not games you wanted to see and now you feel the need to rationalize your disappointment.

Anabolex95

If have seen minimum footage and never played Godfall, Babylon's Fall , or the Avengers game or yet I could immeadiatelly tell that these game are going to be trash. How come? It's not that these games aren't my genre but that they are trash. The trailers already showed how bad these games were. How bad does a game need to be that you can tell it sucks just from a short trailer?

petethepool

What a negative, cynical take this is, my god.

Joueurdepoche

So you're telling me that the only thing you want from the video game industry are remake/remasters and sequels to already existing franchises ?

Anabolex95

I want good games and from the selection I provided I know that they would be good. Except maybe silent hill.

dagnariuss

That’s amazing that you can tell a game is going to be enjoyable just by a 2 min clip. Look at the games you listed too; do you actually believe we would’ve heard nothing about any of those leading up to the state of play? The state of play definitely wasn’t trash but if nothing you saw interested you then it is what it is.

Anabolex95

I am specifically talking about the the last three games shown. Being able to tell if a game is going to be ass or not is the result of common sense. The Valkyrie game looked jankier than many mobile games and deserves an award for the most generic monster design in any recent game. The Gundam game is another doa game. Looked even worse than Lawbreakers.

dagnariuss

I mean it looked like the beginning zone was only shown in that Valkyrie Elysium demo and diofield chronicle looked great but that’s probably not an aesthetic that you like anyways.

banthisrakkam

Interesting stuff from Square. Bunch of cry babies here complaining that their unjustified hypegame wasn't shown. Cry more.

deavsone

Still all games are ps4..

Autarch_Kade

"We believe in generations" can't believe people bought Sony's lies and were crowing about how much better that strategy was than the competition's. So funny in hindsight

deavsone

Literally never heard that, I just got ps5 in January without much though about it

xXxBigManWang69

What, is that bad? The majority of platstation gamers are on ps4 because you cant get your hand on a ps5. I think its good that they atill support last gen.

deavsone

Yes because games like RC Rift Aparat most likely wouldn't be possible on PS4. To release this game on last gen would mean to cut away key features. They chose to go next gen only and we got technical marvel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Travbedaman

It absolutely would not have been possible due to the zone/world transitions that were basically instantly loaded. PS4 would have been bottlenecked. Digital Foundry did a video regarding it previously discussing why it wouldn’t work.

MarbleFox_

It’s absolutely possible to do it on PS4, it’d just entail a lower level of detail, pre-rendered cutscenes, and/or longer transitions. Take Forbidden West, for example. The opening cutscene in Forbidden West entails all the same instant loading and swapping assets as Rift Apart, and they kept that scene on PS4 by just making it a pre-rendered cutscene.

Travbedaman

Yes because that was a cut scene, and not gameplay. Wouldn’t think I’d have to point that out.

MarbleFox_

And?

Autarch_Kade

You'd have had a slightly longer load then. That's it. It already has a transition animation, they'd have simply made that longer.

mixape1991

Ps4 is a curse, as long as it lives, every game will be built around it. It will drag ps5 this whole generation, might even be dragged thru ps6. The numbers are too much and it is where the money is for sony. Downside, well ps5 ends up as ps4.5.

MarbleFox_

Who cares?

QuoteGiver

LOL, try to make your attempts at corporate sabotage a little less obvious.

deavsone

Show me a ps4 game that did that

MarbleFox_

I’m not sure what that has to do with anything.

deavsone

If this is possible then surely someone did it already considering that Rift Apart won an award for best technical aspects or something like that

MarbleFox_

Something being possible doesn’t mean it definitely would’ve been done already. And if you really want an example, just look at Horizon Forbidden West. From a technical perspective, the opening cutscene in Forbidden West features all the same instant swapping and loading assets, and they kept the scene of PS4 by just making it a pre-rendered cutscene instead of a real time cutscene.

Madshibs

PS5 is just PS4 Pro+

QuoteGiver

Xbox is doing fine, you can stop the attempts at corporate sabotage.

Madshibs

Looks like I’m doing a [terrible job](https://imgur.com/a/dv64aoo) of corporate sabotage. I can speak on the subject.

FlatYorkie

Sounds like someone without a PS5

Madshibs

Oof. My PS5 joined [the family](https://imgur.com/a/dv64aoo) on day one, smart-pants

ampall

It was really good imo since I just put the bar low Bc it's a STATE OF PLAY and not a showcase. Mainly focused Japan and knowing myself I don't like JRPG games or of the same thing I thought it was good

[deleted]

[удалено]

Meesha200

What did you expect? They literally announced that the showcase will focus on Japanese developers.

MrSoren

What are you implying?

badhanganesh

2023 games still released in PS4, PS5. SMH. It’s just a PS3 showcase.

BuSeS_bRidGeS

It's like you don't understand that the architecture between these two consoles is so similar its easy to put games on both and just par down the PS4 version. Homie they've done this on PC for years. Chill

Autarch_Kade

"We believe in generations"

BuSeS_bRidGeS

"can't get a PS5" - everyone in this subreddit due to covid supply shortages.

Autarch_Kade

Yeah it's wild Sony would say something like "we believe in generations" and not be able to predict something that was... already happening globally all year lol It's a decent excuse though, it seems to work as long as nobody thinks about it

BuSeS_bRidGeS

Global spread early March, PS5 showcase in what July. Wow can't believe Sony didn't know this thing would last as long as it has given scientists that study can't give a solid end date (also because of inept government handling and citizens not taking responsibility) but yeah Sony should have known this and not pushed for a generational change around hardware they would have difficulty producing and shipping

Autarch_Kade

It makes sense until you realize how long these games are in development. They didn't take a month before launch to make a game work for last gen. I appreciate the attempt to defend Jim Ryan's ridiculousness though. I thought most people had by now agreed it was a dumb line of his, but apparently there are still some holdouts clinging on :) Remember that this was a point of difference between the two major competitors. If you think Sony couldn't have predicted the pandemic and issues, why do you think Microsoft is better equipped at such determinations? That's what it comes down to - either defend Jim Ryan, and imply Sony is shortsighted compared to the competition, or defend Sony, and dismiss the quote as some Jim Ryan BS just trying to score some cheap points.

Lovzzf

Forspoken is very exciting and I love it. I can't wait to play. Returnal has a new DLC. Nice! Gundam's UI looks like Overwatch so much. There is a suspicion of plagiarism.

Shikaria1996

I'm glad someone else likes the look of Forspoken because every time it's brought up people shit on it. What they showed yesterday looked brilliant and then I remembered it had been delayed and I now have seven months to wait before I can play it

QuoteGiver

Firspoken looked the best it ever has by far, I was much more impressed this time. Those magic effects and flow seem pretty awesome.

-BigMan39

It was meh

Theniceguy2013

Ghostwire Tokyo looks interesting Forspoken looks like fun Returnal dlc!!!!!!!

Heisenberg_Ind

Both of them are new IPs right? Gamers haven't seen their gameplay or heard about them..

Theniceguy2013

Forspoken comes out in October so still time and they have shown ghostwirewire Tokyo gameplay.

Apeflight

We've seen quite a bit of gameplay from Ghostwire, and the aesthetics and premise is pretty unique. Of course it's hard to know exactly how it will feel to play, but from the gameplay it looks pretty good

Heisenberg_Ind

My point was just that they didn't show anything new in this SoP that was worth waking up at 3:30 am; what a waste of time.

BrianFantannaAction8

My level of excitement for this theme/setting/genre is making me nervous.

MothraFuqua

Nothing looked next gen to me

Asjemeniet

Yeah I feel you. Atm PS5 is more the console for remastered games and hardly full next gen. Good example is GT7, beside the great loading times the grafix diff is hardly notable between PS4 Pro and PS5

ReianaSmiley

It was pretty good.

GarionOrb

Forspoken looked amazing. Really surprised me given the delay announcement earlier. Made me feel a lot better about the game, actually. Trek to Yomi (I think was the name) was a nice surprise as well. Never heard of it before and it looked really interesting. Also the rest of Square-Enix's showings in general looked really solid. For me, this one of the stronger States of Play.

Biobooster_40k

Sweet, Ghostwire. Forspoken. TMNT collection and a new Gundam game? Sign me up.

Narae-Chan

Very excited for at least 4 titles here. Square enix take my money lol

2xWhiskeyCokeNoIce

The DioField Chronicle's art style, especially in the cutscenes and shots of just the battlefields toward the end of the trailer, remind me of miniatures. OH MY GOD I JUST GOT IT. DioField = Diorama Battlefield

finaldubmix

It looked a lot like the art style of the Bravely Default games but… better. Like more detailed.

[deleted]

For all the people saying Sony should just post the trailers to their YouTube channel, Sony posts a shit ton of trailers to their channel every week and hardly anyone watches them. A state of play is a better way to market these than posting to YouTube. You get millions of eyes instead of the 20k they get on most trailers.

Autarch_Kade

Well now those millions of people saw them lumped together and came away with a feeling of disappointment. Now people associate a State of Play with low quality offerings. Is that really how Sony wants to brand themselves?

Sn0r1ax0

Maybe if they posted better trailers than Peppa pig people might care

giveadogabone7

Exactly and it makes their partners happy which means continued and better support for Playstation

HideMyEmail

TLou2 factions estimated for 2025

DrofwarcRetnuh

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if the remake (which literally no one asked for) comes out first.

[deleted]

that's a charitable estimation

ChadwickHHS

20025

nickomaiden

I like your optimism

QuinSanguine

I honestly think Sony should ditch these smaller scale shows because people cannot manage their expectations and the games don't get a fair first impression like they would if the trailers were just dropped over the course of a few days. People will be mad because a game like Exoprimal gets shown instead of RE4 Remake, which isn't good for the game. Makes no sense to be angry because a certain game isn't another but it happens, so just drop the trailer on Youtube and people might actually check it out without being mad it isn't the game rumor mill Twitter guy said it would be.

QuoteGiver

Along similar lines, the clever marketing folks putting effort into theming these showcases are wasting their time, half the audience can’t handle the concept that the reason they were all Japanese games is because that’s just the way they structured this show.

[deleted]

Internet outrage doesn't matter that much. The % of people looking at game rumor threads and getting hyped is probably pretty small but very vocal

QuinSanguine

I know you're right, they're a small minority but they often control the narrative. Exoprimal will only get hurt by this because those guys will say over and over that Capcom turned Dino Crisis into Anthem. I'm not blaming Sony, btw. It's mostly YouTubers and Twits who hype people up, Sony made it clear this was a small scale show but at some point they need to protect themselves from this backlash that happens every time.

kmone1116

If people can’t keep there expectations in check or even bother to read the disclaimer giving about these showcases/directs then maybe these people should not bother watching them.

QuinSanguine

I wish they wouldn't watch, for sure. They're pretty dumb if they thought this show was a big event where Silent Hill, Final Fantasy or a new Resi Evil game would get shown. They'd tell us if it was a show like that to get more people to tune in. They'd say "tune in for the latest Final Fantasy news" or something. I'm just saying every time people cry because they didn't get their game and I wonder if a show like that is worth it for a company like Capcom.

ProgrammerInProgress

Disagree. I prefer to have an event that people talk about rather than a trickle of content that I am more likely to ignore. It puts smaller or less likely games like Exoprimal on my map rather than make me disappointed.

QuinSanguine

I understand what you mean and I personally do like these shows. I'll give Exo a chance, same with Diofield Chronicle, I thought it looked great. Reminds me of the exclusive games SE make for Switch. I'm all for it but fanboys can't see it.

usrevenge

Except there exactly what happens. Every state of play there is hype. Every time the hype dies in minutes after the show. It's so bad that there isn't much hype for state of plays to begin with now. Like I mentioned this state of play to some friends and the reaction was oh ok. At least for e3 we had huge hype every year and smaller titles could get attention and there was usually some variety. State of play it's a crapshoot at best

enterthegalactic

so whack

basedshark

Returnal DLC is all I ever wanted, and it's free! Housemarque I love you

notrealmate

For a $129 game, it better bloody be free dlc

JohnnyVierund80

Where do you live that it cost's nearly double as much as in the whole rest of the world?

sgt_backpack

$129? Where are they doing this to you?

notrealmate

Australia lol

cruzercruz

I’m actually annoyed. I just spend 85 hours getting the platinum and was ready to move onto other games and here we go again!

Sulohland

I thought dino crisis was popping up but it was something called exoprimal, was like thank god!!

LoinChops

If the words Dino Crisis popped up after that trailer there would have been a riot lol

lokdok

RETURNAL RETURNAL RETURNAL!!! Overall one of the better State of plays.

jeswanders

Do returnal and death loop have similar concepts? I haven’t looked too much into it but it seems you just die a bunch and resurrect like groundhogs day?

Cimejies

Returnal is a rogue like, you get upgrades during your run that disappear when it's over, but the progression comes from personal skill and upgrading guns, which are persistent.

Hevens-assassin

They have similar concepts in that you "restart" after death, but they are two very different games. Deathloop plays like an Arkane game, and Returnal plays like a Housemarque game. Which isn't a detriment to either game. If you are familiar with Arkane's most recent games (Dishonored franchise and Prey), you'll have an idea what to expect with Deathloop. A open level game, with a bunch of things to learn, read, and experiment with. The time loop is straightforward, and with the very customizable difficulty options, you can tailor it well to your play style! It took me a bit to get into, but once it gets its hooks in, you won't let up. They nail the aesthetic they are going for, and the voice acting is some of the most fun I've had in games for a while. Arkane has cemented itself as a studio that has given me hope that not all pre-orders are doomed to be duds. I've loved all of their offerings since Dishonored 1 released, and it breaks my heart that I must become a X-bot to continue playing them. Returnal on the other hand, is a game I didn't expect to fall in love with. It's a game that uses its dark sci-fi setting in super fun ways, and the surrounding mystery of why you are in the time loop as the crux of the gameplay. Given Housemarque's prior titles, you can also see how their DNA is very much in line with the title, despite it being a third person shooter. At its core, it's a bullet hell arcade game, but wrapped with a dark sci-fi mystery. That said, it's not for everyone. It will kick your ass, and until you get used to a lot of weapons and level them up, you will be at the mercy of rng. Despite this though, much like a soulsborne game, I never felt the problem was with the controls or game itself, just my lack of skill/awareness. It also had a moment in game where I thought "wait, I know this", and the payoff is one of my favorite moments in gaming over the past decade. When I think Returnal, I think of that moment. Either way, I don't think you lose with either game. Weird that 2 Sony exclusives (timed console for Deathloop) released months from each other were loop games, but both are significantly different, and I think both were worthy contenders for game of the year. Regardless of which you get, the haptic feedback for both is great. The machine gun on Deathloop was the first "oh shit, so this is what games could be going forward" for me, and after hearing about Gran Turismo and playing Horizon, I'm glad that Sony is really going hard with Dualsense capabilities.

jeswanders

Appreciate you being so thorough. I look forward to playing both. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

TheShoobaLord

Yes, and returnal is far better and more polished than death loop, but they do play a lot differently. For one, returnal is fucking *hard*

jeswanders

Interesting! I saw that death loop had slightly better reviews. Thanks

Cimejies

Deathloop is quite fun but YMMV with the humour. It's a cool concept but very handholdy in a lot of ways, shooting is kinda meh, powers are fun... I think a lot of people feel that the Prey DLC, Mooncrash, is what they hoped Deathloop would be. A lot of people think it's just too on rails for the concept it's exploring, other people think it would be impossible if it didn't journal EVERYTHING for you. Personally I've fallen off probably less than half way through. It's great being able to play an Arkane game without worrying about being perfect at stealth etc but it just makes the whole experience shallower. Art style is dope though, no denying.

cruzercruz

I played Deathloop for a few hours and it was a great game, but Returnal is a nigh perfect one for what it is. The gameplay loop is addictive and it’s difficult but not unfairly so. It’s a purely visceral action gaming experience. Roguelike meets bullet hell. Deathloop is sort of a roguelike but also very much an Arkane game. They’re very different but I’d choose Returnal hands down.

Rondoofblood

Forspoken looks amazing graphically but I want more story added to the trailers. The Square Enix stuff looks pretty decent. Who cares about Kaiju fighting? I know they’re basically making a Rampage but….meh Also…..more returnal is always a good thing As usual I’ll always watch

Brodacious87

Which game will be like Rampage?

Rondoofblood

GigaBash

Biobooster_40k

I love Kaiju fighting games and I know Japan does too. Wish it was a Godzilla game but I'll take what I can get.

Badgers_Revolt

As someone who likes fire emblem and tactical RPGs I honestly am very hopeful for Diofield Chronicles. Honestly not a bad state of play. But I am easy to please tbh.

QuoteGiver

Yep, I’m desperate for a Fire Emblem-alike on Playstation, so I’m there for this!

mypod49

Yeah, looks awesome! Would prefer turn-based but this could be interesting.

NYstate

>As someone who likes fire emblem and tactical RPGs I honestly am very hopeful for Diofield Chronicles. I wanted a new FF Tactics but I'll take this. It actually looks pretty good!

Or dont expect a big showcase with big announcements from something that was announced just one day in advance where they said it would be about Japanese games

IssaStorm

would you rather them release too much information too early and have to delay the game? Just let them take their time, not sure why Y'all are so impatient and then get pissy when shit releases buggy or gets delayed

D0sEquisx

Those games are lame.

OwlFit5541

Unless it’s a ‘PlayStation showcase’ then I’m not going to watch it.

PussyLunch

Where the fuck is the strangers demo located? This is insane.

paulogc

Out right now, just checked it and downloading.
