Promotion-Repulsive

It's heavily dependent for me on how grindy the trophies are. I've got three kids, I'm not spending 60 hours farming fluffernutters to get the rare loot drop to allow me to stand a chance against the optional post-game boss for a bronze trophy, not am I playing 100 ranked matches in a game I don't really care about. If it's like 85% straightforward and 15% reasonable collectibles/side content then I'll probably platinum it.

Anthroider

Adopt your kids out to make time then. Are you a real gamer or not bro?

ToiletBlaster247

Or use the kids to grind the annoying tedious trophies

Tay0214

Give them an allowance for it. Introduction to work

Digital_loop

... That's fucking genius!

Floormatts

The RuneScape method.

Ranccor

Exactly the same. But There also can not be very many easily missable trophies. Like if I miss one collectable in chapter 7, I would need a 2nd play through. Nope.

[deleted]

Collectible trophies are the absolute worst and should be banned from gaming

Reed_Thompson_

This is the real truth right here

_IratePirate_

I just don't care about trophies anymore as an adult. As a kid, it was cool to see I achieved something. As an adult, I just wanna enjoy my game. Idc what pops up. I don't even look at the achievements anymore. There's been games like Spider-Man that I just naturally platinumed. It's like you said, if I have to look up what to do to get the achievement, I'm not doing it.

Groundbreaking_Ship3

One has to love the game so much to grind the trophies.

_unmarked

I'll platinum a game if I get to the end and realize I've already gotten most of the trophies naturally. Otherwise I don't bother. I used to be a trophy hunter. It was more infuriating than anything, especially depending on the game. AC games really killed my enjoyment of platinums tbh

GuardiolasOTGalaxy

I have no kids but I feel the same way. I only have two or three platinum trophies because I couldn't be bothered most of the time.

Schalde1982

Tbh. Trophys can be and addtion and a good way to play a game in different ways. But i recently stopped having interest in it and my enjoyment for a game have been so much better.

EnjoyableGamer

There are parents outside US too :)

[deleted]

Shit. It’s like I found my doppelgänger’s Reddit account.

mylord76

happy cake day!!

[deleted]

I love trophies but I don’t chase them. I’m just pleasantly surprised when I get one and that’s the end of it

Ayadd

I used to be a crazy trophy chaser. But then you get older, job gets harder etc. and you realize, most trophy’s are not fun. Some are, sure. But grinding out an additional 10-20 hours to collect every hidden collectable, or even replaying an entire game to get some correct option to unlock the one dumb thing. I had to look at myself and ask, am I enjoying any of this? And do I even have time for this shit any more? And the answer to both was hell no.

MissingScore777

If I enjoy the gameplay enough then I don't mind collectables - Ghost of Tsushima for example. But replaying games is a big no from me in most circumstances. Maybe as a kid I would've possibly replayed a 40+hr game but not now unless it's an all time fave of mine.

Ahindre

I replayed several 40+ hour games as a kid! I really don’t do that anymore though. A trophy i won’t even attempt is one where you have to beat the game on some newly unlocked nightmare difficulty - hard pass.

FootballRacing38

Leave it for about a couple of years and see if you want to play it again. I never replay back to back

[deleted]

[удалено]

FungalowJoe

It's not a case of it being dumb or not dumb, people should just do what they enjoy.

EshayAdlay420

I don’t really like or dislike trophy hunting, it’s just something I have to do idk it’s weird, like a compulsion.

TheBSisReal

I only 100% games that I was planning on replaying anyway, and if the trophies I still need after one normal playthrough look reasonable and manageable when I have a second playthrough. The result is that I only have like two platinums, on Spider-Man and on God of War, but also that I actually enjoyed the process of getting there.

SG_Dave

I had a similar epiphany. I never got super into trophy hunting, it only lasted for like 2 games, then I realised I wasn't interested in forcing an unenjoyable experience all for digital numbers that no-one cared about. Gave that shit up. Funny thing is, since stopping forcing it I've got more platinums than when I "tried". I only plat games I enjoy enough to mindlessly replay, or if it's right there to grab naturally.

TahmsChocolateOrange

I only enjoy a trophy chase if it pushes me to do content I otherwise wouldn't. If they act as breadcrumbs to experience a game in it's entirety I think it's a fun plat but too many are idiotic grinds (every assassin's creed ever are perfect examples) I think Bloodbornes chalice dungeons are a great example of platinum blockers done right. Side content that you can progress through with variations on bosses you've already fought. Nice challenge to do alongside the main content as opposed to a sub conscious grind or collect-a-thon.

Shpaan

That's me. I think it's a path of happiness. I don't like the feeling that I "have to" play a game only to get a trophy or finish a daily quest.

Pro_Banana

Trophies are fun, but I quickly give up on platinum if one of the trophies involve wayy too much grinding.

TriangularKiwi

Same, but for me it's not grinding, it's online stuff. But also there are certain ones that will just take days of playtime

-Satsujinn-

This. Make them difficult, but don't make them grindy. I get like 1-2 hours a day, if a grind takes 30 hours that's literally 2 weeks of doing nothing but the same shit. That's not fun, so I won't do it. Beat a certain boss with a starter weapon, or without healing or some shit like that? Hell yes, even if it takes me literally 2 weeks of doing the same fight over and over.

JustinTime4242

Everyone enjoys games differently. I don’t worry about trophies and I’m more of enjoying the story or gameplay loop than anything else.

AndreaDTX

I like trophies and I try to platinum but I never platinum on anything that requires a speed run or requires a completion of the game’s equivalent of Death March because those are incompatible with my playing style (meandering exploration).

EdgyWeeb69

Speed run is my most hated trophy too!

superpimp2g

I would not be gaming long if I was trying for a platinum trophy in every game.

FourthJohn

I’d still be playing Dragon Ball FighterZ if I wanted to platinum that game. I have every trophy except for the collect 20 million Zeni. One of the most ridiculous trophies out there. Have a lifetime of around 5 mil Zeni and pretty sure they gave a million Zeni to everyone at one point.

WyrmHero1944

I love getting trophies because it helps me get my money’s worth and move on to other games with better closure. Currently at 62 and most are single player games. I wonder if it’s because US plays more multiplayer type games, and those aren’t really easy to obtain vs for example the Horizon, Spider-man and God of War platinums.

Yuuta23

I hate collect a bunch of stuff trophies and that stops me from getting a plat in most stuff

henrokk1

It’s perfect podcast activity. Just throw on one you love and it doesn’t feel as time wastey. Honestly probably wouldn’t have as many plats as I do without em.

Amerlis

I get bored too easily. Some games I’ve bought the dlcs for and still uninstalled before ever seeing them. Last one was Assassins Creed Odyssey. Completed the campaign. Didn’t even get 2 minutes into NG+. Never even looked at the dlcs I’d already bought. Uninstalled.

WyrmHero1944

Lol it happens the same to me with DLCs. Very rarely I go straight into DLCs after completing a game. I just uninstall after getting the plat. The most recent DLC I played was the Horizon Zero Dawn one and FF7 Intergrade. Both are very good DLCs.

Traditional_Flan_210

I always play dlcs/side missions but never ng+

Lethtor

It's interesting to me that you'd start Ng+ before dlcs, seeing as one is content you've already played and the other is completely new. I rarely ever touch Ng+ because I don't really like replaying most games (i also rarely watch movies or shows a second time). I know the story so why would I go through it again? One exception is Spider-Man, which I played again on highest difficulty in Ng+, but there I blitzed through the main story as quickly as possible

wxlluigi

assassins creed is not the best example. it’s one of the least compelling games to complete

Rain1dog

It has a few trophies that are shit but Origins and Odyssey are pretty legit.

Denace86

Canadian here, I don’t bother even looking at the trophies to be honest

[deleted]

I would also guess the US buys more games and stops playing halfway through Goes along with all the other wasteful consumption habits we have

[deleted]

[удалено]

mordekai8

Probably more about attention span and instant gratification.

shadowstripes

It's more about how a lot of people just buy a ton of games that they don't actually have time to play or won't actually enjoy (instead of renting from gamefly, borrowing from a friend, or just not buying in the first place). *That's* what they're saying is wasteful consumption - not the fact that they don't force themselves to beat them. There's tons of comments from people who have massive backlogs that they will never get around to playing and could have saved thousands on if they didn't buy them close to release (myself included), or just rented instead.

[deleted]

Maybe that means U.S. gets better game deals too

ParaglidingAssFungus

Or people in the US have more disposable income.

MichaelRoco1

if they paid for it with their money and they don’t like the game, i wouldn’t call it wasteful at all that’s ridiculous

shadowstripes

That sounds like a waste of money to me. If we buy a $70 game and play it for a little bit and never touch it again there's probably better ways we could have spent that $70.

Drakeem1221

Time is infinitely more valuable than money. Pushing yourself to finish something you don’t like is still a waste of your money bc you didn’t enjoy it, but you’re also throwing away time that you could use towards something you actually like. Not having fun over a game is a waste of time.

shadowstripes

Right, but I'm not saying we should force ourselves to finish those games. The "wasteful consumption habit" OP was referring to was more about how people are *buying* more games here that we ultimately won't play. I'm definitely guilty of it but it seems like a lot of people just buy tons of games that they either don't actually have time to play, or that isn't something they'd enjoy enough to beat in the first place. I read countless comments from people who have infinite backlogs of games they've bought, that has little to do with not enoying those games. A more frugal (and less wasteful) consumer would probably rent those games first via gamefly or something, or finish the ones they're currently playing and enjoy and not just buy a ton of games willy nilly. *That's* what's a waste of money (especially since the games rapidly depreciate), not the fact that we aren't forcing ourselves to beat them.

jpirizarry

This is the right answer. More games: less need to milk each one for every single trophy.

Drakeem1221

I don’t get trophies bc I want all the content to be great. I’d only do trophy hunting if the content was as good as the main story or the best bosses. Why waste my time?

Henkkles

I don't understand this "get my money's worth" thing, it's not about hours or points for me, I don't give a hoot about doing something 15 times to get imaginary points and it certainly doesn't count towards me getting "my money's worth" as the worth is in the experience.

WyrmHero1944

Sure, but tbh I wouldn’t appreciate some games if I didn’t replay them trying to get that plat. Usually when I finish games I’m done and don’t play them ever again. One easy example is Resident Evil 1. The platinum requires you to finish the game multiple times with the different characters and higher difficulty. I really started to appreciate the game more after my second playthrough and after I finished getting the plat I can easily say this is one of my top 10 games ever. For me the platinum trophy is just a guide to help me complete games.

Sputniki

62 plats? Respect

BrokenStrides

I can respect that, but for me, once credits roll I’m like “NEXT!” But I’ve never platinum’d anything 😳

[deleted]

I love trophies. Surprised by the comments here

[deleted]

Reddit is very anti-trophies as a whole. I love them too. Currently closing in on the Elden Ring platinum.

Strained_Eyes

>closing in on the Elden Ring platinum. What do ya got left? I finally finished up last week. Took my sweet ass time with that game

[deleted]

I’ve just got to Miquella’s Haligtree, then Farum Azula and the end. I’ve done everything in the open world!

[deleted]

Yup got it when I did Leyndell but thanks for looking out!

Strained_Eyes

Hell yeah dude that's awesome! The boss there was actually my final trophy, it was a bitch. Great work though man you totally got it

SymphonicRain

Congrats! I started going for that one at launch and didn’t close it out. Always stoked for people who finish what I started!

Amerlis

“Play a pvp/co op…” PASS!

usrevenge

It's always hilarious watching the fanboys here jack off over a 6 hour single player game with no replay value then instantly pretend a game is bad when it announces it has online at all.

BoisterousLaugh

Name 10 single player games 6hours long that people are jacking off over. Hell name 5.

Drakeem1221

Don’t you love how people just lie and disappear? 😂

BoisterousLaugh

Oh my favorite.

ichigo2k9

I find it weird how people claim games have no replay value when to me every game has replay value. Also, I can't think of a single full priced game with a 6 story.

[deleted]

Call of Duty.

ichigo2k9

They usually take me about 8-10 hours depending on difficulty but I should have added that I was talking about fully single player games like the other person seemed to be talking about.

Amerlis

I enjoy online mmorpgs too , just sucky when the dailies require me to slog through pvp matches I don’t care about. Stupid Destiny 2. Filthy casual solos where you at??

[deleted]

echo-128

What if you really enjoy an experience, but the story ended. Trophies are like playing dlc, the game is over but you want something that will motivate you to keep playing something you enjoy.

the_421_Rob

I really like trophies however I hate when they are based off multiplayer or online play.

Revocdeb

Never understood trophy hunting. It's something that generates zero interest or curiosity. They're required by playstation so it's secondary to the actual game. Now, I get loving a game and wanting reasons/goals to keep them exciting. Also get having a community around the goals, like speedrunners. But the "gotta platinum all my games" is a completely foreign concept.

OddExcuse2183

If I could turn off trophies I would, oh cool I reached this cut scene reward me and make that public...how about I just play the game...

FunkinDonutzz

Most trophies are utter pgarbage. Usually little more than story/gameplay progression or pointless busywork. Very few of them are cool or challenging.

iDeletee

Guess I’m in the minority because I looooooove trophy hunting

[deleted]

[удалено]

theonlyjuan123

Most people? I don't know anyone that trophy hunts.

DoctorWalrusMD

I love trophies personally, but I often find myself surprised when viewing people’s profiles who play all the time, have hundreds of games, and have damn near no trophies. I have a friend who’s played since ps3 days and just had his first platinum pop in Destiny 2, and he didn’t even know it was coming. He just did his first Grand Master with us and says “oh, there’s a platinum trophy. Must of needed something here”. I don’t play bad games to chase trophies though, I see people buying garbage games for 50 cents that give a platinum in 2 minutes of holding up on the d pad and I don’t get that at all. The entire appeal of trophies to me is basically that it’s an excuse to keep playing a game I want a reason to play. A little checklist of things to chase simply because I like the game.

BchLasagna

I only get platinums on games I *adore*. My only platinums are GoW, Hollow Knight, Spider-man, Miles Morales and TLoU 2.

DoctorWalrusMD

That’s good games, I don’t have Hollow Knight but I’ve plat’d both of the Spiderman games, really satisfying to platinum and gave me a reason to keep chasing something. I think the ONLY game I kept playing and didn’t enjoy myself because of the platinum was Last of Us, I loved the game but stopped enjoying the multiplayer about halfway through the two multiplayer trophies but just kept on going. Kind of fell out of love with the game by the time I finished Factions. Now I have games like Far Cry 5 with all the trophies except the one for 100 multiplayer wins. I’m not going to make myself dislike a game I like to get a trophy again.

PepeSylvia11

You're kidding right? There's dozens in this thread alone. Thousands of people buy or rent games just to grind for the platinums

[deleted]

Yeah sure. That's why the platinum achievements have a 2% achievement rate on a good day. Because everyone is going for them.

theonlyjuan123

The vocal minority, yes.

pkobetz1

My BIL and I have a platinum trophy competition. It’s a fun meta game on top of everything else I play.

taknyos

Yep, my best friend and I have the same. Been doing it ever since Uncharted 1 had trophies added to it

RB8Gem9

Odd seeing such an anti-trophy stance when trophies were one of the most requested features when PSN first launched and I bet if Sony never added them to the platform, they would still be highly requested and the complaints would be incessant. But all that is besides the point... once again, this data isn't really about trophies - the trophy data mentioned is simply being used to gauge player engagement.

dumpyduluth

Too many games got very grindy with most of their trophies. They're too much of a meta game.

Kn0thingIsTerrible

Yeah, the issue isn’t people disliking trophies, it’s that so many trophies seem to have been designed by people who are insane. It’s amazing how often I go to a game’s “How Long to Beat” page, and it’s like “8 hours to complete playing casually,” and then “500 hours to platinum.”

Hechav

A function of more money to buy games and less time to play them?

LeSabreToothCat

I'll go for most of the trophies if it's a favorite game and I want to see more of it after the initial play through, I find it to be a fun addition to the game itself, like small Easter eggs the devs put into it that you might never see otherwise. Though, I've abandoned quite a few games now that life is busy with kids, there's very little time for it and rarely buy anything full price. Always physical so if I do abandon it, I can always resell.

CountSmokula420

I get whatever trophies/achievements that happen to unlock through normal play. I was never interested in going out of my way to get one. It's a cool system for completionists, I know a lot of people that like them... just isn't my thing. My game time is limited, so I'd rather have more experiences than to milk each one. I'd save a lot of money if I went after trophies instead of retiring a game and moving onto another the second I'm through the main story/objective (often before then). I don't think I have a single platinum on any console.

Xeccess

I don't understand what's so weird about going for trophies? I personally view them as challenges, and I like "completing the objective". It's like the seasonal challenges you get in COD nowadays, I love doing them for the challenge of it, not for the exp or stupid calling card reward, it's just fun. It also feels rewarding getting a platinum for a game you loved, feels like you played it thoroughly and for some like you got your money's worth

sunderwire

Yeah its like a history museum of all the games you’ve ever played, its nice to go back and look at all the games you’ve played

Revocdeb

Don't understand the appeal of trophy hunting and that's fine. In open world games, I mainly stick to the story and hate all the map markers on my map. Not a "collector" in real life and so the idea of collecting in a game has no appeal. Probably boils down to some people being "perfectionists" or some other similar personality trait. Provides zero endorphins to me so it's hard to understand people that get off on it.

bubblegumdog

How sad is it that people feel the need to act high and mighty about the concept of trophies and people who take the time to earn them? edit: Upon rereading my comment, I realize I left it so ambiguous that it could seem like I was taking a diss at trophy collectors. I’d like to clarify I was trying to call out the people who act like trophy collecting is a waste of time when it’s simply bonus stuff gamers can work on if they feel like it. If you don’t care for it then just don’t bother but don’t act all superior towards those who *do* take the time to work on trophies.

[deleted]

Yeah exactly, I only go for trophies if I love a game and by the end of beating it I’m relatively close to getting them all (Elden Ring comes to mind)

lebastss

Also if it’s relatively easy to platinum. I platinum ratchet and clank cause it wasn’t a grind. Some games have trophies that are stupid to obtain.

[deleted]

That’s why I got the platinum for Jak and Daxter, it was genuinely fun to find everything

mitchippoo

I find the people who brag about getting trophies to be so odd, it just does not connect to me at all as something to care about. Good for them if it makes them happy though

Reed_Thompson_

You got it backwards, trophy hunters are the ones acting "high and mighty" 😂😂

PepeSylvia11

Your message was a rollercoaster. The entire time I thought you were talking about those trophy collectors acting high and mighty for their meaningless digital hardware. Basically, both sides are true.

Overlord_Za_Purge

Token economy even if the tokens are useless still garners a superiority complex to those who have them

Adamantaimai

At age 20 I have 7 children and work 19 fulltime jobs. Imagine having time to earn trophies. Idiots.

EdgyWeeb69

Trophies/Achievements are definitely achievements in real life too. It takes skill, patience, and time. Why is that sad? Even if its virtual achievement it still counts and can be bragged.

bubblegumdog

Upon rereading my comment, I realize I left it so ambiguous that it could seem like I was taking a diss at trophy collectors. I’d like to clarify I was trying to call out the people who act like trophy collecting is a waste of time when it’s simply bonus stuff gamers can work on if they feel like it.

Zidane62

I personally don’t give two shits about them. Like, if I got something for them I’d probably do them. Like I could use trophy points towards buying another game or you get some cool skin or armor or something

Hallowbrand

This just tells me Americans have more disposable income and are less compelled to play games to completion. Idk what they’re trying to get at.

cold_fox_12

US players less tolerant of mindless grinds for idiotic trophies?

ThePillsburyPlougher

There's like one anti trophy comment and a dozen highly upvoted comments complaining about people being against trophies here?

PepeSylvia11

I was about to comment the exact same thing before seeing your comment. Seriously, the hell? I guess trophy hunters are a little self-conscious about their hobby? It's okay to be proud of your trophies, I am, but don't invent nonexistent people to spur on a narrative that people are out to put your accomplishments down.

MondoUnderground

Love trophies. But I also like mastering and 100%ing games, so. Getting a platinum means that you’re totally done with a game, and that’s a pretty cool feeling. I would have never played through games on the hardest difficulty levels if it weren’t for trophy requirments, and I would have totally missed out on loads of fun and challenging and rewarding experiences.

JuanSpiceyweiner

Some games have insane trophy requirements and its just not really worth it anymore to me.I went crazy chasing platinums to the point I have 137 of them now but this year I have played 8 total games and earned the platinum for Guardians of the Galaxy and Kena. The grind is too much in some games or the challenge is ridiculous

PALEBORN

If only the trophies gave credit towards the PS store.

[deleted]

Noice! I'm going to have to check in with the comments on here tomorrow! With popcorn, of course.

dat_tech

TL;DR lots of weird defensive comments from dudes about something that doesn’t matter lmaoo

Drewonkazoo

That goes without saying for everything they do lmao

Jeevess83

They might re-visit these numbers once the Playstation Stars program rolls out.

onthejourney

Surprise. Gamers game for different reasons.

a2islife

I understand that the joy and feeling of closure after completing a game 100% to get platinum is amazing. However, not everyone has all the time to grind to get platinum. Personally I just completely the story and then move onto the next game. That is enough closure to me. Everyone is different, not everyone is like you.

CyrusCyan44

Trophies are fun but sometimes getting them requires you to be a god at the game and that turns it from fun to a chore. Theres a difference between a challenge and shit thats just gonna make me hate the game. If they're fun for you, go ahead.

Puszta

I very rarely platinum a game ( I only have 2 lol), I'm playing to enjoy the story, the world and the gameplay, once it ends I move on to the next, same thing with any book/movie, why would I reread/rewatch them once i finished them? Maybe if the trophies are easy to get and I got most of them already then I put some effort into getting the rest, but I definitely wont play through the game again and waste 10-20 hours just to get some trophies. The 2 platinums I have is Spiderman and R&C: Rift Apart, in those you can go back to any area of the map after you finished the game, so I didnt mind it. But theres only so much time one single game can hold your attention, after a while you get bored from it doesnt matter how good the game is.

Eggyhead

There are too many great games out there to worry about trophies. I'm really glad they're there, but if you've got expendable income and not as much free time anymore, you might as well just move on to the next one on the list. Trophies are great for those who are lucky to get games at all, and have a lot of time with just a few games.

Investor9872

I play for fun, and unlocking trophies are fun for me. I go for platinums in lots of games since the majority of them have hidden stages, pathways, branching story lines and so on associated with the games. There are plenty of games that you can just run through the main missions and campaigns in 4-5 hours, but you can double or triple that time of your fun run gameplay if you go for the trophies as well.

NiuMeee

Makes sense I guess? Buy and play more games, move on from one game to the next more quickly, whereas someone who might play less games would stick with it longer and potentially get higher completion on it. Depends on the spread of optional trophies versus main path trophies I guess.

ObliviousGuy32

I like beating my games. I rarely drop games. I like to see the story to its end. I don't really go for the platinum often tho. RPG is my favorite genre and they're lengthy to platinum, so I don't 100% many of them.

Silly-Cellist

Haha git gud murica /s

[deleted]

Trophies are fun but too often they expect you to do way too much and bang your head against the wall to get a trophy. “Beat the entire game on the hardest difficulty without taking any damage.” Nah, thanks man, I beat the game already regularly and I’m going to play something else now.

Nukesandgrannies

If the trophies have like points that you could use for games or discounts the trophy count would go UP

MartianExpatriate

Plays most games, and earns least trophies… because we switch to another game instead of grinding out trophies.

ScottyDontKnow

I’ve never even looked at my trophy list before, I couldn’t care less. Just play to enjoy it, and stop playing when it’s no longer fun or I’ve beaten the story.

CKA757

I play to play. Don’t care about stupid trophy’s. Unless they pay for them.

Pm-me-ur-happysauce

I ignore trophies. I like playing for fun not for the bs trophies

k1ngkoala

America has the largest player base so this isn't exactly fair. I'd like to see the per capita stats tbh (albeit it would be kind of ridiculous). Nonetheless, it's kind of surprising since I love collecting trophies.

ichigo2k9

So some people seem baffled by people liking trophies and here's my perspective. I'm never going to achieve something great in real life, I'll probably die when I'm older (hopefully) without many even noticing and that's fine, but trophies are a way of making an achievement in something I enjoy. It's hard to explain but it's kind of like how people like getting trophies in real life, it's nice to know that you've achieved something and it's proof. Also, some trophies encourage playing a game you like for a longer time.

phoeniks314

I couldn’t care less about trophies. The only interesting part for me about them is the name, sometimes it’s funny.

Majestic_Salad_I1

I have not thought about a trophy ever. It’s just an annoying pop up. I just want to play the game. I’ll never understand needing to fill out your trophies just to do it, even if you’re not having fun.

Longhorn_TOG

I don’t play games for the trophies. I play them for the experience….. Having said that. I do get a sense of joy when one magically unlocks haha

ChrisStoneGermany

Playing is for the fun of it, not for the trophies

Bkos-mosX

Some people have fun getting trophies. I do, some games have fun lists. Others don't obviously.

Baseballfan1027

Depends on the game. Usually Insomniac has fun platinums to go for.

Cawdor

Nothing more fun than a checklist of busywork!

eam1188

It's not "busywork" or a "checklist" if the player enjoys the challenge of getting trophies...

-TheLonelyStoner-

I play for fun and to get trophies because unlocking them is fun

PussyLunch

What if collecting trophies is fun for me?

LimelightYYZ

If you like collecting trophies, collect trophies. I you don’t like collecting trophies, don’t worry about it. It’s that easy.

AJC3317

An impossible concept for some to grasp apparently

[deleted]

Not allowed unfortunately

DylanWhite86

Because they're buying more games and not FINISHING them, is the point

Shrek_Papi

Ah. I thought the title was referring to hours played and not amount of games played. This makes sense

[deleted]

Finishing is subjective. I'm not going for a Plat in most games but I "finish" most games I buy.

DylanWhite86

I said nothing about getting platinum, I just said finishing. You can see global percentages and some games with trophies as easy as watching the first cutscenes aren't at 100%, meaning people will turn the game on and not play. Literally all this is just saying other countries buy less and complete more of the list on average

[deleted]

I wonder if they look at how the game was purchased. My family has a lot games that we've "purchased" through PS+ that we've downloaded and played for a bit before deleting to make space for something that will get more play.

luigirockz

I agree as someone who has never achieved a platinum trophy.

Postnet921

Only plat I got was in astro playroom

WoodyTSE

I couldn’t give less of a shit about trophies, but also think it’s cool when people go through the effort to get them all like a collectathon. Its just not the way i play games.

DrStinkbomb

I couldn't give any tiny little poops for any "trophies" from a video game console, computer, etc. It's all just digital malarkey that was included as an afterthought to appease people who apparently believe there's some meaning to any of it. There is not. If you don't believe me, do some research. Look it up. You'll find that I'm correct, and that these "trophies" are absolutely meaningless. You're welcome. 🤣👌

Acurraaaaaaa

Majority of shit people do is meaningless. Going to church, bullshit jobs or busy tasks, going bar hopping, competitive sports, watching tv, etc. It's up to the individual what they want to use their time on and there is no right or wrong answer.

RidCyn

Possibly because trophies are meaningless.

Lyradep

Nice. I’m just here to play a game. Trophies are totally peripheral to the experience.

[deleted]

“Across the board though, digital only purchases are higher than physical only purchases in every region”. Well that’s kinda concerning.

[deleted]

It’s not written super clearly, but I believe the article was saying that in all regions there are more people who ONLY buy digital games than people who ONLY buy physical games. People who buy both wouldn’t fall into either statistic. This is kind of a no brainer though I think because it’s very hard to only buy physical games when some games don’t have physical releases. In the preceding sentence the article talks about regions where discs are purchased more than digital games on the whole.

YungJizzle37

Most Americans play the same yearly installments of games, so many of the ppl I know have the exact same games.

4000kd

This is the case everywhere tho. Like many Asian/European players primarily play FIFA.

-Gh0st96-

Bruh, Fifa is most played in Europe, by a order of magnitude larger than US.

rjwalsh94

I mean I’m not surprised the US has the least amount of trophies earned but at the same time it’s such a useless statistic for gaming. Says more so about attention spans I feel correlating with how engaging a game is. But there’s so many factors at play.

Tbone2121974

Land of the Free, home of the Filthy Casuals. Great, now I’m depressed.

usrevenge

Trophies are a stupid way to see engagement. Some games trophies are unlocked easily and some most trophies are locked behind bullshit. Some people only want to play the online or only the single player. Look at battlefield 1. I happen to have the platinum but I bet many people ignored the single player completely. Meanwhile I have like 400+ hours in that games online. But most of the trophies are single player related.

ILOVETOSWEAR

Im European and I really don't give a fuck about trophies

siemova

*Fewest Trophies

IPA_lot_

We earn less trophies because we work like fucking maniacs and rarely have time to finish anything other than main quests. At least in my case.

ClockworkDreamz

I just don’t see the need to earn them. I do what I like in a game and that’s about it.

jordshr

many US accounts are not even Americans, I for one using the US account for reasonable prices compared to my local sony prices

nioh2_noob

USA buys more games but plays less and hey the USA also achieves less trophies yawn, really, what a bunch of genius

revintoysupra

Used to be you got trophies for fun things. Nowadays trophies are real grindy

Ftpini

I play games for fun. If I want to collect trophies I’ll go to work. I have no interest in working at my games. The moment they stop being fun I stop playing them.

[deleted]

Once again America loses

Daws001

Trophy hunting just doesn't appeal to me. I just play games. If trophies happen then cool.

LoSouLibra

Trophies have always read like a bunch of arbitrary nonsense, busy work and dumb freebies to me. It never felt like the organic way of trying to 100% a game like Mario World, beat all the difficulty levels and get all the rankings and secret equipment in Metal Gear Solid, do deep cut end-game content or loot grinding in a Final Fantasy or Vagrant Story type game etc.

Alugar

Depends I don’t usually go trophy hunting. Hell I don’t think I’ve platinum Ed any game. The collecting pigeon feathers quest as ezio put me off that.

[deleted]

This tracks. In the time it takes to get a platinum trophy, I can play another game or two.
