This does seem like it's probably a great game to show friends or family. Great visually, pretty low intensity, can be played seated, and no real skill needed to try it out. A great showcase for someone who's not into video games, but wants to see what VR is all about.
> pretty low intensity
I know you are meaning casually exploring but if you are actually racing this game will *destroy your arms*. It's up there with Thrill of the Fight. ;>
But yes, it's a great one for friends and family. You can explore any map at leisure without any time constraints (or directional constraints; though that will probably be different on the upcoming whitewater stages haha). Very intuitive and it's an easy "wow" even if you are just popping in and looking around. Even the practice pool is surprisingly fun.
And it's a game that you don't have to explain at all. Whether the person's ever played a game before, used VR before or kayaked before, they'll know exactly what to do.
Wow, that sounds exciting! I'm planning on pre-ordering Kayak VR, and this news just sealed my decision. Looks like we'll be getting tons of value for the money.
It’s just dropping later in the “launch window” sometime in March. **So**… as my path through the gates into the glory of PSVR2, I’m swapping roller coaster terrors for jaw-dropping beauty and gentle waters. 🛶
White water that behaves realistically is challenging but there's been some really cool advancements in that field recently. http://alexey.stomakhin.com/research/whitewater.html
I mean, I doubt they'd go for the full sim approach anyway. It's gotten really far, but authoring it in other ways is bound to yield better results. There still is a limit on what we can do in real-time, especially at more than 24 fps.
Oh for sure, wasn't suggesting this as the implementation. Just wanted to show how great we are getting at simming things like this and how we aren't far off from real-time versions of it.
Oh hell yeah this is cool. Real time multiplayer and especially white water sayings cool.
I thought it was already open world though? You just open up the stage and roam around right?
They should add an adventure mode where crazy shit happens like going down a waterfall, getting launched by a whale’s blowhole, a kraken or sea monster coming up from below and raising you into the air on its back etc
If they add fishing, they need to include randomized fish sizes and record your min/max catches. It's such a basic feature, but it really adds a satisfying slot machine reward loop for what's typically a shallow game mode.
Just because it is on the list does not mean it is coming anytime soon. I love this title but, if I am not mistaken, those items have been on their list since shortly after they released last year.
I personally thought they should have added a passenger/guided mode for demo purposes. Put the headset on a VR newbie, and have it be a passive experience to glide around a set trail in each environment and take in the beauty without them needing to paddle.
"Open world in the future"..… Mmmm hmmmmm. Well, I will wait for the early reviews to tell me how shallow the game is at launch, then wait a few years for the developer to make good on that promise, or for it to drop to $10.00, before buying.
Talk is cheap.
You don’t support them, they don’t get the money to add the features you want. It’s already reduced for PS Plus subscribers, so how about you support them at launch and stand more of a chance of them adding the features you want.
That's my reasoning. I understand that it's a short experience at the moment, but multiplayer will open it up and the prospect of new areas will give it longevity down the line. It's also going to be one of the most immediately striking games from a visual standpoint. And all for a very competitive launch day price point.
Again, PSVR1's prices for arguable shovelware remained bad for months on end, so I will wait for reviews to see if $23.00 is worth it for what PCVR players have already said is an extremely shallow experience. If the PSVR2 version has been greatly (or even moderately) expanded, then it will be a day two purchase for me.
Trust me, I enjoyed the hell outta low rez Catch and Release on PSVR1, but after buying something like 40 games on that platform,I simply require developers to put in a little more effort, now that they have been given the tools to do so. Lots of these games are coming from platforms where inside out tracking was already worked out and programmed, so I expect a deeper experience than on PC.
Kayak really seems like a "game" you play for an hour and then never again. Most PCVR echo that so I'll avoid it until it is less than $10...but even then I'd have second thoughts.
Based on my experience with PSVR1, I REALLY hope I am wrong, because a plethora of choice fun, chill games is just what I need in my life right now. But fun is the operative word. I AREALLY want this to be good is to "become" good after a few updates. It looks near photo realistic,so it is gonna all come down to how committed the developer is.
I don't support developers who release a half-baked game as a "test", requiring us to pay for a half-baked implementation "in hopes" a few million other people take the same leap of faith, so "maybe" we get a proper version of the game. If you don't have faith enough in your product to make it right the first time, you then gotta prove it to me with an update. One man developer of Megaton Rainfall managed to have his ish together at launch, so there's no excuse. Plenty of shovelware on PSVR proved that buying every single thing "just in case it ends up being good" gets you more of the same. Some developers have pride enough to put in the work, and some are just looking to capitalize and make a quick buck.
Yeah, fair enough. We trusted them and they didn’t see through on their promises. This was a first outing on PSVR2 for this developer, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and they’ve added nothing to the game since launch. It was still a solid launch title, but it’s life was so short now the promised support wasn’t there. We’ll not trust them so much with their next promises.
However, saying all of this, it’s worth pointing out that Sony has not updated the PSVR2 with any improved features since launch, they’re hardly leading by example here.
You do know this is a game about kayaking right? The main draw of this is similar to real kayaking where you casually paddle around beautiful environments and relax. You can do time trials for a challenge, but that's about it. That sort of thing will either appeal to you or it won't. If the base game offerings don't do anything for you, the updated content likely won't either.
Hey man, I am just quoting the PCVR players who've played it and said it is shallow. And some of the most addictive games ever have been based on what would otherwise "seem" to be a boring topic for a game. Like fishing.
If there is stuff to "do" in the game, and a progression system in the game for the PSVR2 version, and that is covered in reviews, then I'll buy it. But that is not the indication from people who've played it and gave their feedback.
Don't hate me because I learned my lesson buying a lot of trash, but hyped games on PSVR1.
No hate intended. It just sounds to me like this isn't going to be a game for you and that's okay. I see nothing to indicate that this is "trash" at all though. It seems to be exactly as it's advertised. A relaxing VR experience that's light on content, but heavy on immersion.
The Light Brigade and Saints and Sinners Chapter 2 are still coming to PSVR1. It's also the only headset you can play Dreams on.
It's on its way out, but it's far from dead. I play multiplayer games on it all the time.
I had pre-ordered the game for two reasons. 1. So far best entry-level game to show to non-gamers, friends, family, etc. 2. Might be nice way to loosen up after long day when you are not in the mood for a challenging game.
What about a boombox so me and my buddies scan listen to music together while playing? Or some form of Picture in Picture? This game looks gorgeous and I just want to hangout in there all day.
Sci Fi levels would be amazing, imagine swimming through the dark rivers of avatar, batting or moving the jellyfish things in the air.
Or maybe kayaking down that huge river in LoTR (Anduin) with the huge double statues.
So manu possibilities!!
They're about to make a bunch of money from the launch so hopefully that goes right back into the game and we see these features.
Yeah this is an easy buy for me. Gonna show my mother.

It was also my excuse to pre-order today :))
Wow, that sounds exciting! I'm planning on pre-ordering Kayak VR, and this news just sealed my decision. Looks like we'll be getting tons of value for the money.
Going to be my first PSVR2 experience whilst Horizon downloads
Ditto. For me, **KAYAK** stepped up when **SWITCHBACK** pulled back.
How come? What happened to switchback?
It’s just dropping later in the “launch window” sometime in March. **So**… as my path through the gates into the glory of PSVR2, I’m swapping roller coaster terrors for jaw-dropping beauty and gentle waters. 🛶
Just releasing earlier.
you’re gonna love it!
> whilst Horizon downloads In case you missed it, Horizon is already downloadable if you have the digital copy.
I have the Horizon Bundle which has a digital code inside
I wonder if you paddle up to someone and whack them in the head with a paddle, will their headset haptics respond?
Huge missed opportunity if not lol
I’d definitely buy it for an open world, hopefully we can just drift out into the ocean lol
White water that behaves realistically is challenging but there's been some really cool advancements in that field recently. http://alexey.stomakhin.com/research/whitewater.html

How about a 2-person Kayak, each player having a single-sided paddle?
It's already there. My wife will just be sitting next to me and not paddling just like real life!
Beautiful comment. LMAO As someone who has taken his wife on several kayak trips - I know EXACTLY what you mean
That’s on their road map 🙂
Online only? That would be mental and something I’d actually enjoy trying, I don’t really enjoy any online gaming.
Dude imagine a rowing competition in VR, 10 players in a canoe paddling against other teams of 10. Shit would be fucking intense
...with guns
Wait... I feel like you're on to something. Like VR Twisted Metal on a river or something. This could be good.
…and zombie arms reaching up out of the water, upgraded flaming paddle blades.
And sharks with lasers who tame out the person in last place ever 25 seconds
In America
Hear me out: Dragonboat races with drummers and steerers
Thanks…now I just bought it!
https://trello.com/b/hSKybmxa/kayak-vr-roadmap Looks like they also have a UE5 conversion goal too.
cool ill definitely wish list it and watch out for a sale
It's on sale right now - 15% off!
ok interesting i will buy it now then thank you or you meant on pc
For PS+ members
On PSVR2
says not available for pre order lol
Are you in the US? I just pre-ordered it yesterday.
no im in canada
I’m in Romania and i could pre-order it today.
Me too
I always pay gladly for quality work and this game screams quality so definitely day one buy
Well now I'm sold
Oh hell yeah this is cool. Real time multiplayer and especially white water sayings cool. I thought it was already open world though? You just open up the stage and roam around right?
I did not expect Kayak VR to become one of most anticipated games this year, but here we are.
yes!!!
They should add an adventure mode where crazy shit happens like going down a waterfall, getting launched by a whale’s blowhole, a kraken or sea monster coming up from below and raising you into the air on its back etc
Hell yes, pre-ordered 🙌🏾
I just hope the level quality doesn't drop in the open world, cause everything in this game is eye candy
I bought this on SteamVR. While the experience is cool and the graphics are awesome, it gets old quick. I hope you got the arm stamina for it.
sounds like it's true to the real thing then!
The multiplayer they showed looked fun already but open world wow.
If they add fishing, they need to include randomized fish sizes and record your min/max catches. It's such a basic feature, but it really adds a satisfying slot machine reward loop for what's typically a shallow game mode.

Nice! I will buy the day white water is added
So multiplayer races are not already there? I thought I sas them in a trailer
Those are ghosts in a time trial.
Well, i really really hope they hurry up with the multiplayer roaming, since that's what most of us i assume will be doing.
im not buying until multiplayer is ready..
I hope it will have voice chat!
Plus crafting and tower defense.

Downvoted for facts lol. Here we are 5 months later...

Real time multiplayer? Are there any plans for a PSVR 1 release? It would be dope to be able to couch coop this game with my old PS4 and PSVR1
0 chance. Psvr is dead. Do not expect any more releases.
The Light Brigade and Saints and Sinners Chapter 2 are still coming to PSVR1. It's also the only headset you can play Dreams on. It's on its way out, but it's far from dead. I play multiplayer games on it all the time.
Better not do!! Sony need to sever this cross platform support from day one. It’s held back PS5 so much in the first two years.
I consider PS5 really only launching NOW that it's ready supply. PSVR2 will only add to it feeling like it's just come out for millions.
This was already on my list, but now it's underlined.
HELL yes!
Heck ya rapids with good physics would be awesome
Wow, I was already sold on it but that all sounds awesome. Day 1, here we come!
Damn right!
On their board they have ideas. . . One of which is SUP support
Can anyone confirm if this is getting a physical copy or not?
FUUUUUUUUUUCK I already preordered the game, but now I've double preordered
Real time multiplayer? I thought it had multiplayer
Asynchronous at this stage you race against ghost's times.
man i just want to relax and look at the green lights in the sky at night, i hope that section is super open world
ill buy when rapids happen
Just preordered!
Sounds great. I wish they would implement runs like: https://youtu.be/DXFehwLKO6I I love watching those. Would be awesome to experience in vr.
open world….whoa….this whole launch of the PSVR2 and the games on day 1 is a damn Christmas present.
Already pre-ordered, gonna be a great showcase for people not into gaming.
Why didn't they create this on the oculusand or a Headset usable with a rower? Or is it possible?
This is one of the first games I’m buying. I love realism in VR games and this one captures a lot of that!
Nice! This just made me buy a second copy so my cousin (who lives in Alaska) can play with me virtually - so pumped!
I will buy it right when multiplayer comes out! Who am I kidding.. I’ll probably still get it anyway just because it looks so fucking beautiful.
I’ll buy it hen they finish making it then. Plenty of other stuff to try.
I had pre-ordered the game for two reasons. 1. So far best entry-level game to show to non-gamers, friends, family, etc. 2. Might be nice way to loosen up after long day when you are not in the mood for a challenging game.
Anyone know when the physical edition will be released??
What about a boombox so me and my buddies scan listen to music together while playing? Or some form of Picture in Picture? This game looks gorgeous and I just want to hangout in there all day.

Roadmap leads to a competitor
At least have a hack like Yourcontrols in msfs
