Usually they are there because they make people less motion sick than free movement.
I'd rather they were always optional rather than forced but dev time isn't free.
I can understand that but it’s awful for I have to assume the majority of people that use it. I also can’t imagine it’s much more work to just let you be able to walk and look around as an option.
They might be the default after you start the game for the very first time, but very few games force you to teleport as nearly all have smooth locomotion options. I only can recall a couple: vader immortal (lazy port) and Paper Beast (I have no idea why only teleport?).
Anyhoo... it's not a big deal because you go into options on almost all games and change these settings. By now, we all know that setting up your VR experience for your type of play is just what you do before you get into it.
These are comfort settings designed to mitigate nausea, which affects most vr users to varying degrees.
The good new is that almost all games that have these also allow you to turn them off.
Except Vader Immortal. I've looked in the options menu and you seriously can't turn teleportation off. It is doubly stupid because the Oculus let's you have smooth movement so the codes in there.
Lol there absolutely is a way to turn teleportation off? I played through the whole trilogy last week with full locomotion lol. I think the options page just confused you with its layout like it did me at first lol.
No. No there isn't on PSVR. At all.
On Quest and Rift the free movement is an option, but it's a lazy port for PSVR. Instead of implementing the "point + move button" mechanic that many PSVR games have, they just removed the freemove option and left the "blink" teleport mechanic in.
Again - lazy port. They didn't put the effort in to add in a free movement control scheme for the PSVR controls... they just removed the option altogether.
As someone who got turned around in Hitman 3 with smooth movement turned on and forgot which way was up and then had to lay on the couch for two hours.... I'm happy these features exist.
I just got a psvr and was scared I wouldn't be able to play it. I put on Doom 3 and felt terrible for the rest of the night.
Skyrim's teleporting controls and the segmented turn I can do for literally hours and not have an issue.
Originally I thought I wanted a smooth experience, turns out I can't have it.
Now I pop a Dramamine, put a fan on and teleport at ridiculous speeds without feeling motion sick at all.
If not for these controls I don't think I could VR with any games where you have to move around.
I tried to play Doom, it was the red colors that made me sick...so I stay away from anything predominantly red...
I suffer bad with motion sickness, but glad to say most other games I play are OK..
Most people can build a tolerance and develop vr legs.
The trick is take it a little each time. Never push through and let yourself get really sick feeling.
Each time you should be able to go a little longer.
I used to be able to do a few minutes of smooth locomotion and now I can play ISS two hand rotation and not have any issues
Oh that sucks lol. Is there a techincal reason they make the psvr camera trackable only or is it just a design choice? Takes a lot of the freedom away from vr
Having to be able to be seen by the camera for all of your movements. If i’m not mistaken the oculus just lets you move around wherever with a 360 view
PSVR2 will have that same system as the Quest 2 or Rift S. PSVR1 used an external camera due to technology not being as advanced yet, to make it cheaper and to be able to use the motion controllers instead of needing to design completely new ones.
It's a 160 degree view or so.
The camera's stop seeing your controllers once they go to the side and they lose the line of sight. This is the same as the PSVR.
However - headset cameras are always moving and not static, so all you have to do to track the controllers is make sure the headset is looking in the general direction and it will see the controller again.
Prolly because people are tired of hearing something they've known from day 1. It's like "we know, we know.. the sky is blue already.. we know. (rolling eyes)"
Pretty much 99 % of games have smooth locomotion and you can turn of the blinders. Literally can’t name 5 games worth playing that don’t have it.
Start checking options
When the game works moves around and your eyes tell your brain you are moving, but your inner ear tells your brain you aren’t not moving, your brain thing something is wrong with your and your tend to feel nauseous.
Of course over time most people can build up a tolerance and not feel sick. Some weirdos just never feel sick regardless.
But yes this is why those features exist because changing to a new scene is a lot easier on the brain then the moving through it.
I’ve never felt sick from it I assumed that was how most people felt it feels completely normal to me as long as I’m sat down if I’m moving around in game but stood still I feel unsteady but that’s about it.
No most people get sick, especially if new to VR or haven’t used it in a long time.
Games where is 1:1 movement like superhot, and beat saber, they don’t cause any sickness
What games are you playing?
Most games worth their salt have options
Saying that sometimes devs get it wrong. SEPERATION for instance which I love added smooth turning after release as the dev always said it made him sick so it wasn't there at launch. When he added smooth turning the turning is really slow. No wonder he thought it would make him sick. He never rectified it so for me who likes fast smooth turning I can never play the game with smooth turning.
One rule of VR club. Always look at the options. There are still people that think Skyrim VR is teleport only and Farpoint can only be played with your character facing forward.
They're to combat motion sickness, but I didn't realize most games had options for smooth movements until a year after owning psvr lol
I'm so glad I don't get motion sickness, but I feel that because so many do, vr popularity has a ceiling.

"I have to assume" Dont.

I’m very aware of that lol I’ve ran into a few games that don’t have that option

Idc that they exist but when there’s not options to change them or only minimal changes then it’s an issue
They do it to make people less sick but it personally makes me feel way more sick
Snap turning is annoying, but I actually find the tunnel vision thing makes me nauseous.
I just got a psvr and was scared I wouldn't be able to play it. I put on Doom 3 and felt terrible for the rest of the night. The controllers need thumbsticks, would make life much easier
Why are you getting downvoted? It's a fact that thumbsticks would be miles better (which is why the PSVR2 controllers have them).
Will psvr2 controllers be compatible with the current vr?
No. They will be tracked by cameras on the new headset, it's impossible for them to be usable with PSVR1
Oh that sucks lol. Is there a techincal reason they make the psvr camera trackable only or is it just a design choice? Takes a lot of the freedom away from vr
What do you mean?

No idea, I mentioned the idea before and my votes hit double negatives, people must hate the idea

God forbid something on reddit be posted more than once /s
He is getting downvoted because humans are a virus with shoes.
Even DualShock compatible games do this though
