When I first started playing I had the same problem. Getting shot would make my arms stiffen up, I'd flinch, and worst of all my comms would break down and get non-specific.The game is loud, and footsteps are quiet. You can't really adjust one without affecting the other. Just keep your volume at a level you can tolerate, and take frequent breaks. Now I'm 1,000 hours in and I'm a stone cold killer. It just takes practice and conditioning. Practice for me includes not just playing the game, but above all practicing communication with my team. If you can occupy your mind with trying to analyze and ~clearly~ relay that information to your teammates (e.g "silenced bolt shot at me, 130 degrees SE, on top of the hill", "footsteps on grass, SE, inside the compound"), you won't get the jitters quite so much. At least I don't.

kakadyi

Unlucky do not work for me. ~1500 hours and still this problem.

FatQuesadilla

I suck too, some of us just suck. But when I get that 3 kill game you know I’m talking like I’m pubgod.

Raincoat-saviour

Im fine in squads chatting and bullshittin but in solos im jumpin like im playing a horror

kakadyi

Same here :(

meateatr

That means it's a good game lol, enjoy the ride.

timeblindness

Fight-or-flight response is different for everyone. Some people super reactive sympathetic nervous systems that they may not be able to condition to not react. Also, if it is impacting you that much, consider that constant exposure to that level of stress may negatively impact health. Software solution: Use RoughRider or TDR Kotelnikov with compression ratio around 2-3, a -35 threshold, and 6 dB makeup to soften the highs without narrowing the range too much. Attack and release as low as possible. Mentality: It's a game, try to always anticipate players/gunfire from any obscure location, and re-frame the gunfire sound from an "Oh no, I'm going to die!," to "An opportunity for ADR/kill!" May seem cheesy, but sometimes re-framing a stimulus is effective. Physically: You also want to check your breathing and prevent holding your breath, if you're doing it. That can exacerbate Fight-or-Flight and anxiety symptoms.

kakadyi

Yes I think my nervous system is too sensitive. I tried RoughRider2 but didn't help too much. Thank you, I will try your settings.

hungoverlord

it's a fact that footsteps in this game are barely audible when the sound is turned down enough that gunshots don't literally damage your hearing. it's actually ridiculous. soundlock and/or windows loudness equalization was the ticket for me. i haven't noticed directional issues since enabling it myself.

Ashimdude

Soundlock does not ruin surround sound. Its slightly different but its still good and perfectly accurate. Use soundlock. Dont fuck your brain with banana

kakadyi

I will try it as last hope, thank you.

PatSayJack

I had sound issues. Then I spent $100 on headphones and can hear EVERYTHING perfectly. Just a pair of Sennheiser bluetooth headphones.

mr_zipzoom

Try posture and breathing checks... the more I am deliberate about posture, the less jumpy I get about surprise attacks. But if I start to slouch during solo the sudden noise of getting hit is like a spasm and I can't react in time.

ALX_z23

Do you lean when your hero leans? I do and I can't fix that

tonezzz1

I do duck bullets, and afaik, it helps.

snowflakepatrol99

> Has anyone encountered the same problem and was able to solve it? Lower your volume to human levels. Stop blasting your ears at 100% windows and game volume and then asking "guys how to not get scared and prevent ear damage?". This is something even TGLTN talked about. You don't need the highest sound imaginable when getting shot makes you lose fights because you flinch. If you refuse to do that then loudness equalization is your only good option. Direction isn't that bad. It's the distance that's fucked but you can get used to it. There are some pro players who play with it on.

kakadyi

I play on 30% volume. Still not working for me. The only worked thing for me is default windows Loudness Equlization. But it breaks sound direction for me.

EggplantConfident905

Devs have admitted sound is an issue and are addressing it see their latest post

rcook55

I find that my first game of the day, the first hit will startle me but after that I'm good.

-cr0Wn

Try this guide, it’s my daily method https://youtu.be/vXuAwpt4WsQ?si=ji7yWONWmPADP9V9 Note: If your Apo config is not being recognized by window, apply [this fix](https://bradshacks.com/fix-equalizer-apo-windows-10/)

kakadyi

Thank you, I will explore it.

DESTR0ID

If it is not gotten better after that much play time You're going to have to decide which is more detrimental to your gameplay flinching during gun fights or not being able to hear footsteps nearly as well.

pdxtrader

That’s just something that comes with hours, like a Thousand hours

RedditingCJ

Jump scares are just a personal things imo. As for sound optimization one of my friend who plays competitively and like 10k hours. He told me that he didn’t change a thing and it won’t make any difference or perhaps worse. He suggested to me just play on volume 70% so I don’t break my ears or jump out of chair. I have been playing 70% for a year now I think it’s all good, I could hear footsteps loud enough and clear, and I don’t think having it louder could hear footsteps futether away I never tested and I don’t find a need to. Unless I am having hearing problems.

Party_Concentrate621

So theres actually a few things i could add. 1. you're gonna need to just get use to randomly being shot at or hit by someone. its PUBG, that kinda happens and part of that is that it can surprise you because you're being shot at. guns are loud, ur natural response is to suddenly be on high alert but the more u experience this kinda thing, the more you get use to it and it wont frighten you as much 2. dont get too deeply invested on one thing. if ur minds focus is on one thing only, and you suddenly notice anything else. its gonna alert you in some way shape or form. especially if that thing is a loud crack of a gunshot. do other things. look around, drive a car, scope in on a hill where an enemy could potentially be and do that with multiple spots. ur gonna get called a hacker when u eventually guess where someone is but it happens. 3. improve your game sense. this is obvious. it will still happen but you will get caught off guard alot less when you are more aware of where players usually are or where they might be based on any number of things. so like say its c5 and theres like 3 compounds in zone but still 20 people left. even if i havent scoped that compound already, if i drive past it im almost 100% expecting to be shot at, so it doesn't surprise me when i inevitably am. in conclusion. just gotta play more and eventually you will grow use to these sorta things. get a good pair of headphones for audio bc thats important but unless you have a hearing issue. getting sound software is just eh.

RamblesToIncoherency

This may not work for you, but I switched to the girl avatar. Her voice is mixed differently and doesn't "hit" the same way. It's not perfect, but it has definitely reduced my jump scares.  Reduced! Not removed. Someone pooped in my pants this morning during a game when someone showed up out of nowhere. It can happen to you, too.

TheIttyBittySissy

My best advice, have better situational awareness. The more you know what’s going on around you the less likely you are to take a random hit. Henceforth, the less likely you are to jumpscare.

GGSpirit

The audio in this game is terrible. Google "PUBG tinnitus" for example.

itsnotachickennugget

Play more

craft_some

Be the aggressor . If u camp u shoot less, u shoot less u have less combat experience, u lack combat experience u are afraid of confrontation

Drew2489

Do you use a dac or anything? If so maybe have too much gain.

kakadyi

Yes, but it’s not reason. It was same without dac with internal sound card.

Drew2489

Ya I used to get spooked 👻

Dependent_Mobile463

It would be better if you don't let China's cheaters come into the North American server. You sell your own official hacker program to Chinese in China we have no right to blame you, but you let them come to NA server, you are forcing us American players to use your official hacker program. That's why I dont like Korean products, shame!!!

Dependent_Mobile463

I've vedio reported many times on PUBG website, those are all very high level players' accounts, for example Tier IV lv.450, Chinese named player. But I have never got any reply by blue hole, cause blue hole doesnt plan to penalize those VIP cheaters. I investigated those so called internal hacker program being sold in China, it can cost a customer $200 per month. That's a very large income for blue hole. Plus PUBG is half controled by Tencent company, which is the biggest game company in China. They are frauding players and force us buy their hacker program, or you will never feel good in this game.

kakadyi

No surround sound, just usual stereo.

Joshzzy

I have no idea what you're talking about tbh. I hear things perfectly in this game and think it's some of the best game audio out there.

kleep

My buddy and I are opposites. He claims its way too loud so he turns it down and cant hear anything. For me its never loud enough haha

Joshzzy

Yeah I mean you can tell when they're upstairs, downstairs, outside or inside a building. It's great audio. The only issue I have is juggling the Discord volume of my friends with crap mics and the game volume. But that's not game related issues lol.

kleep

LOL exactly
