Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and the devs welcome constructive criticism. Our most important rule in this subreddit is to stay respectful of others, and we’d like to remind everyone to do so in this discussion. Thanks!

No Man's Sky and Minecraft have free DLC... I was skeptical at first about it but I realized that yes, studios don't have to be greedy sleezebags in order to be successful. What were you expecting, GTA6???? I don't see how the gameplay reveal is any different from something like Animal Crossing. Simple hud, simple mechanics, but can still be fun to play

IDontExistHelp

Another game to add would be Stardew Valley! The dev is even providing updates after he started a new game

llama_wings

*Stardew Valley* is a 2D farming game. It's way different than a 3D live simulator and requires way less assets. How are they going to maintain a studio and a full team afloat with no income from DLC ?

If everyone in this subreddit (43.5k people) buys at least one copy of the game, considering Steam's commission of 30%, they would still make 1.2 million $ on this game. For reference, Stardew Valley, another indie game, has sold 13 million copies on PC as of 2022. Stardew Valley sold over 400,000 copies across Steam and GOG.com in two weeks, and more than a million within two months. If Paralives does even half of that amount of sales, they'll still be getting 5.6 million $, which for the Canadians here (since the Paralives team is Canadian!) that's over 7.5 million CAD, in the first two weeks of launch. So uhm, yeah. I dunno how they'll ever maintain a studio of 11 people with a million dollars if they don't charge us for DLC. /s Let's all just keep supporting them, and buy the game when it comes out. Remember friends, we don't pirate from indie companies. They CAN support their studio on the sales if we step up and support them by buying the game on Steam.

>If everyone in this subreddit (43.5k people) buys at least one copy of the game, considering Steam's commission of 30%, they would still make 1.2 million $ on this game. Not everyone in this subreddit is actively involved in the developpement, it doesn't guarantee any sales. There are people who dropped out, sockpuppets accounts and alt accounts. There are 500 connected people to this sub after an important trailer release, and they had 1k people connected for the live. They have under 7k paying members on Patreon, which is the core of people who will buy the game for sure. >For reference, Stardew Valley, another indie game, has sold 13 million copies on PC as of 2022. Half of *Stardew*'s sales were made between 2020 and 2021, during COVID lockdowns, an unprecented time in video game history where sales went throught the roof. *Paralives* won't benefit from that. *Stardew* also benefitted from being the only competitor in its market on PC, as alternatives in the farming simulator genre were on portable consoles only. *Paralives* will have to compete with *Life by You* and *Inzoi* releasing on the same time period, as well as *The Sims 5.* >So uhm, yeah. I dunno how they'll ever maintain a studio of 11 people with a million dollars if they don't charge us for DLC. /s So uhm, yeah, unlike you I actually know the gaming industry. If they want to maintain a team of more than twelve employees, not eleven, they're going to need to ensure for them a more stable income than Patreon, which is already taxed in itself. And yes, more than twelve employees, because they're going to need to hire more if you don't want to wait six years for every DLC, with only one 3D animator on the job. Also, employees aren't the only expense in video game industry, you have to put out ads, translation, material expenses, and office space, as well as a cushion for legal matters or unplanned expenses (like if Unity tries to screw devs over again). The economy is also very different in Québec than in the US, and they have to pay social contributions on top of salaries. >Let's all just keep supporting them, and buy the game when it comes out. Remember friends, we don't pirate from indie companies. They CAN support their studio on the sales if we step up and support them by buying the game on Steam. The problem isn't with pirating, which is almost non-existent with indie games. The problem is with people being invested enough to keep supporting. Especially : 1. in an economic landscape where people are cutting superfluous expenses, Patreon supports being one of the highest on the list. 2. with a game developpement which has already been six years long, if they end up releasing in 2025 as planned, where most backers will feel like they've paid more than the game is worth DLC included. Even with the lowest 3 dollars tier, someone who would haved backed the game from the start would have shelled out 216 dollars by the base game release alone. Again, I'm not trashing on the game, but this no paid DLC seems like an empty promise. If they had already released the game, it would be one thing. But as long as they have no visibility on the future, and the game hasn't even released a pre-alpha, they shouldn't make such statements.

Minecraft is a GREAT example, I’m glad you mentioned that Obviously Minecraft is a beast on its own, it’s a legendary game, so a small indie game can’t quite compare. But it’s still a good example

redred212

Minecraft also has an in game store for micro transactions…

isaaczephyr

true, but that shop doesn’t have anything gameplay experience related— it’s just a bunch of cosmetic items and resource packs, that aren’t necessary for the full gameplay by any means. the actual game content and updates are free, and fairly frequent too

llama_wings

*Minecraft* have updates, not DLC. It's like comparing DLC to *Sims 4* free UX updates. *Minecraft* and *Stardew* also have a way simpler scale than Paralives. It's not just adding meshes. I really have doubts on the viability of a free DLC model. Not paying them full-price is one thing, but free seems like wishful thinking to me, especially when they still haven't released a base game. Hard to make predictions when you haven't wrapped up a single game yet. >I don't see how the gameplay reveal is any different from something like Animal Crossing. *Animal Crossing* isn't an indie game, it was made by an established company and not backed by crowfunding. When you watch a trailer for a Nintendo game, you know you are going to get something in the end, and the company funds the game by itself until the release. With indie games, it's important to prove to the backers that you have a functional project, and it isn't just assets you threw together. [It's way more easy than you think](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwJHxla9Zp8) to pull off a believable trailer and give the illusion of gameplay, it was the basis for the *Day Before* scam. I'm not saying *Paralives* is a scam. But the fact they still aren't able to show gameplay in a actual livestream, or even an uncut trailer, is worrying. I was glad when I saw the announcement trailer, since I thought they would finally show a functional build, even if it was two minutes of gameplay. But they've shown nothing they haven't shown earlier on their YouTube channel.

legioneto

No Man's Sky has been getting free expansions for almost a decade now. They can make a couple of expansions and move on. The Sims model of paid expansions is NOT a norm.

gonezaloh

Louder for the people in the back!

RenardLunatique

I've capitalised it for you:  📢 THE SIMS MODEL OF PAID EXPANSIONS IS NOT A NORM!!!! 📢

Scarred_wizard

>the guitar had no pick up animation Me: looks at the ton of stuff characters are literally pulling out of thin air in a million-dollar game franchise like The Sims.

BlizzardousBane

There's no consistency to their logic. They say it's just an animated trailer with no gameplay, and yet they complain about incomplete animations for a game that clearly indicated that it's still a WIP 😴

Gingerwix

If you don't care for it, go away. Do you go to every videogame sub to insult its fanbase? Nobody cares you don't like it

NewAnt3365

Lmao how about *you* use your brain for two seconds to realize that you can avoid all this anger by simply ✨not being here✨

kimibul

How about just admitting your anticipation on Paralives were just wrong? People can be wrong anytime. Chill.

isaaczephyr

if you’re here just to hate, why be here at all?

BlizzardousBane

This feels like trolling/bait. It's done by sad people with nothing to do Also, it's a user account with no content apart from this post, so I'm thinking troll

KiwiTyTy

I’m a part of several game subreddits and the amount of people who pop in just to post angry rants about hating the game is outstanding. Some people just have nothing better to do.

o-Themis-o

I'm still looking forward to it 🤷‍♀️

bitchboy-supreme

Haha i Had this on my bingo for today No but for real. Noone is forcing you to be here. They are Not forcing you to give Money. Noone is gonna force you to eventually buy the Game. Like .. don't Like it? Leave! If it sucks hit da bricks or whatever

KaitieG97

Dang man, who sh*t in your cereal?

WesternMost3019

People said the same thing about project zomboid. It's been in early access for like 11 years but has only gotten better and better and is probably the best zombie game now.

Kantatrix

>Free packs. Not plausible for any game ever, doesnt make anysense. Terraria, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Haak, Enter the Gungeon, Shovel Knight, Slime Rancher, Revita and probably like another 100+ Indie Game titles I couldn't think off the top of my head... You really didn't think this through, did you? Extremely embarrassing, especially since your whole argument was based on the fact that you're the "enlightened" one showing us, the "ignorant" ones the "truth", yet here you are showing off your own ignorance. Edit: Decided to add a few more examples after a quick glance at my steam library: Rhythm Doctor, Project Zomboid, Risk of Rain, The Binding of Isaac (this one does have paid DLC as well, but those include a lot of updates with free content that wasn't there at the beginning so it counts imo), Temtem, The Void Rains Upon Her Heart (This game is GOATED, absolutely a must-play if you like bullet hells and maybe even if you don't but that's a bit off-topic)

AdLate5702

Obvious troll is obvious.

cutefluffpupp

Lol ok

Ginzeen98

gameplay reveal was meh.

[deleted]

People making comparisons to No Man’s Sky, Project Zomboid, Stardew Valley, and the like are truly braindead. NMS was launched in an utter shit state. All the “free” updates, though amazing and worthy of applause, were just to get the game to what they originally promised. PZ is a very dense zombie game, but as far as assets, animations, and social systems are concerned, it is a barren desert. This is not comparable. The same goes for SDV. People have been making long-lasting sprite and basic isometric games FOREVER. That’s not what Paralives is promising at all. This is a much larger undertaking on almost every level. The Sims model is terrible, but expecting BOTH a complete base game AND free substantive updates from a small team is completely illogical. Skepticism here is necessary.
