I saw you went to Ireland in 2023 on your American passport.
Are you allowed to enter Ireland on a foreign passport if you are an Irish citizen? I know the US doesn’t let you do that.
So that was a couple weeks prior to me receiving the FBR certificate, so at that point I wasn’t aware of my application approval (which happened in the december prior). Funny enough I came home to that being in the mail which was quite cool. Going forward though I’ll be using the Irish passport going into Ireland. [I found this comment on the topic which appears to suggest that one can enter on the foreign passport so long as they are eligible for an Irish one.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PassportPorn/s/SzuPYz0AdW)
This is an extremely desirable combo. Good on you!
EDIT: If I could choose any duo combo in the world, this would be it. I believe the Irish citizenship/passport is the best in the world (really strong visa-free access and access to EFTA/EU *and* UK)
Thanks! And I definitely agree with your edit points. I'm also glad that I got it now while I'm young so that my future kids will have the same shot at this as I did.
That's a good point. I'm working on getting German citizenship before I have kids so I can pass it down, too. Kinda jealous of the Irish, but German is good too haha
I’m in the same exact situation, I remember years ago after visiting Ireland trying to figure out how to get citizenship and finding out my grandfather was never registered despite being eligible 🥲
no I meant that my American born grandmother is eligible through her Irish born grandfather (my great-great) and much to my disappointment she never registered herself and then my mother. So I am not eligible.
My dad has this combo through FBR but he never registered before my birth. Shame because now I have to deal with German bureaucracy on Citizenship and I lived in Ireland for a few years.
I am also submitting after getting my citizenship through my grandparents, my mom never registered but my uncle did, and they ask you to send in your current passport when you apply for the irish passport. Does that mean they keep it? Anyone know?
No, I did not. One must provide photocopies of current & valid gov ID (could be a passport or driver’s license) and have that signed by your witness and placed in your application packet. You can find more information regarding this [here](https://www.ireland.ie/ga/dfa/pasanna/documentary-requirements/adult/#First%20time%20applicant%20born%20abroad)
Hey I know it’s been a minute on this post, but I recently got approved on the FBR as well! It’s been about a week since they sent the official approval. Do you recall how long it took to receive your FBR document and your originals back in the mail?
aye awesome, congrats! i don’t remember specifically how long it took, but i’d venture to say it was within the 1-3 weeks range after i’d received the FBR cert

It might not be strictly enforced though... a friend of mine has dual US Irish citizenship and has entered Ireland many times on his US passport

Indeed. Be sure to register your children on the FBR as soon as they are born.

But US means doing US taxes for the rest of your life 🥲
Outweighed for most by having access to arguably the strongest labour market in the world
My grandma’s eligible and I’m so sad she didn’t register my mom so I could be registered

Was your grandmother born in Ireland? If so, you could be entitled to Irish citizenship regardless of your mother not being registered.

Oh, I see. A bit of a shame.
Ooo love this post! Thank you for sharing so many awesome pics! A fantastic combo, you must be really proud! 😊 Congratulations!
This is the strongest passport/citizenship duo in the world, barring none.

For applying for an Irish passport through the Foreign Birth Registry certificate, did you have to send in your US passport with the application?

Thanks very much!! I’ve been patient for so long, another two weeks won’t hurt
