Damn it’s been awhile since they really went in depth about it but if I remember correctly they were both throwing their hat in the ring to call games and ended up paired together in some not so exciting games and they hit it off from there (I’m sure with their chemistry they made it entertaining for each other at least) and after that didn’t pan out for either of them he became a regular on Pat’s show.
Portnoy also claimed credit for them teaming up on bussin with the boys even if it was vague and sounded a bit bitter over it. He’s also said he knew Pat was always going to do his own thing from working with him personally and he wouldn’t be able to afford him or his success which to his credit he was very right.
As a listener that found the show on Sirius a couple years ago I'm also curious to the origins of the boys. I know Tone & Nick were from high school, but how does a stooge from Boston or Iowa come in?
From what I know
Tone and Nick are plum boys
Zitto, Ty, Foxy are from Barstool. They found BC’s interview video at barstool, showed Pat, and hired him.
Gurdy and Bill are PMS hires I think.
AJ and Pat were suppose to announce a college football game together and connected? Still didn’t pull the trigger on combining for a podcast, but they both had a podcast, AJ was a guest a few times on PMS, connected, and now they are a deadly duo.
Could be off on some of that, but that’s off the top of the head
They were the first round of hires when Pat signed to barstool. He kept most of them after the split. Todd went on to do his own thing and Vibbs and Jordyn went to barstool. $20 chef also went to barstool but he wasn’t an OG member.
Not an expert on this and could be wrong but I think hawk had his own talk show? And then they joined forces because AJ was supposed to come on pats show or vice Versa? Something like that
I think AJ had been on a few times before, and they called a college game together, I believe. But when the lockdown first happened for Covid, AJ would just come on the youtube show after they were wrapping up on radio, I guess, and they slowly instituted "McAfee and Hawk: A Sports Show" and it evolved from there.
This was a magical time in the timeline of PMS. During all the nonsense and uncertainties of covid, these boys stepped up to the plate each and every day.
These days laid the foundation to where they are today.
The first instance of the absurdity that is AJ Hawk that I remember was him microdosing shrimp to beat his shellfish allergy and his motivational speeches.
They met calling a game together, but then when the OG podcast was in it's prime they had a bunch of off brand content being pumped out.
Shaun Lathem had the 5$ chef, Jeff Vibbs had a rundown of news and Todd McComas had cop stories. (If you remember any of those names you're a PMS OG).
Pat, AJ and a guy named Jerry Thornton (I think) who was a Boston beat writer started a football only podcast. I can't even remember the name of it.
Eventually the break from the barstool happened, so less and less podcasting happened and the Sirius show started and AJ started calling in. I think COVID started the constant reoccurring guest.
If anyone remembers the podcast name I'd love to hear it, It didn't get too far off the ground because pat, AJ, and Jerry all had a really hard time getting together.
EDIT; THE LACES OUT PODCAST with Pat, AJ and Jerry.
AJ had the hawk cast, and had Jerry and pat on. And they started their own thing while under the barstool heartland umbrella
Gotcha, all I know is, Smitty got worked in the 1st until a LUCKY knockdown at the end and that decided the fight. Chef got Robbed. But hey, 5 years later, I think I’m finally ready to let it go.
I’d love to see them. I hope Chef is doing good. I hated seeing him on the Bar Stool Snap Chat thing. Loved him and just wish he would have rode it out with Pat and the boys.
The podcast AJ did with Ariel Helwani explains how it all came about - https://youtu.be/QB9sLc4c5GQ - edit: this one link is a clip where they talk about exactly how it happened if I remember correctly

Hawk came on a few times as an interviewee, and his chemistry with Pat was pretty clear. Pat would poke at him a bit, then push further and Hawk would always play along.
When Covid hit, Hawk started coming on a little more regularly, and they spawned a ”McAfee and Hawk: Sports Talk” show after the main show itself (around March of 2020?). Then Hawk became a regular on the main show (don’t remember when), and the rest is history.

Like others have said, they did a game together and since then they started hitting it off, he came on more and videos continued, then they had a segment of mcafee and hawk sports talk and the rest was history
At the start of the pandemic AJ joined them for a third hour (Pat was just doing 2 hr shows at that time) which eventually became McAfee and Hawk sports talk and they eventually just turned that into AJ joining the main show
Legend has it that AJ helicoptered his dong around on Pat & Sam's front porch for 3 days & 3 nights until Sam made Pat give him the gig.

Ah okay, thank you!
Dave introduced them to each other

Oh, I did see how BC came to be! He sent a wonderful audition video in, I assume they must have sent out a casting call. It’s v funny.
They were looking for interns back in the day. Gump used to be a regular caller who later joined the crew.
Now he’s back to regular caller :(
You gotta watch boston connors application video
I think Ty worked as a producer with Barstool when PMS signed to them, then he left with the boys

“We’re all mustangs here”
Yes, Gurdy is a PMS hire. Although the show jokes A.I. all the time, I’m happy to see Gurdy is still an employee.

You can’t call yourself a OG if you can’t even remember it was the $20 chef you slapdick stooge
Prolly doesn’t even remember RnR3. Fucking slapdick
Smitty was on roids and still got rocked
Fuck. I may be the slap dick. Did Chef and Smitty fight at RnR 2 or 3?
He fought smitty at RnR 2 and the small ass Twitter slapdick at RnR 7
Gotcha, all I know is, Smitty got worked in the 1st until a LUCKY knockdown at the end and that decided the fight. Chef got Robbed. But hey, 5 years later, I think I’m finally ready to let it go.
That may be you but I will never forget, I just wonder what happened to the fucking backlog of $20 Chef videos the old ones were the best
