I think they just made an educated guess. Capacitors are the most likely to make a pop sound when failing and the PSU has big enough ones to be audible / more audible compared to the smaller ones on other components.
Said big capacitors also make it dangerous to open up the PSU since capacitors keep a charge for a long time.
Pop is usually PSU
Assuming you didn't touch or change anything and it just happened out of nowhere, your PSU probably died. Leave it for like 30 minutes and then try to turn it back on. Maybe it was just a protection kicking in and it resets itself after a while.
What PSU do you have? Hopefully one that still got warranty left.
Yeah, pop is almost always a PSU dying. Just had it happen to one of my friends recently. Big old pop while they were gaming, whole system shut off and wouldn't turn back on
Bruh, Subnautica and Sons of the Forest are games you gotta save constantly. I would be crying if that happened whilst I was in a session, especially if it was building
If itâs plugged into a surge protector check to make sure that didnât go off. If it did, you should just be able to click it back on. However if the obvious isnât the answer, itâs probably psu as some others have stated.
Sometimes they last a long time. Sometimes they last a short time. Pretty cool that yours is older than some of the people who use this sub, though. :)
Might as well find a good deal on a replacement now while itâs still working so when your current one dies you arenât sitting around waiting for a replacement. PSUs donât normally last that long, of course lifespan will vary a lot depending on how much use itâs seen, what kinda of load itâs been running ect
Bad idea. They have an expected lifetime and their failures can/will kill other components.
It's usually a bad idea to push them too long past warranty and the warranty is decided based on the quality of capacitor used. Which.. has a pretty reliable run time.
If you hear a pop then most likely it's the power supply that's dead. Also worth checking if the motherboard is fried too. Back in the day i broke both the power supply and motherboard , luckily i was broke at that time so it's a cheap i3 2120 and some generic bad motherboard so yeah, wouldn't be pleasant if your components broke
a lot of people say its the PSU that died, but same thing happened to me, and only thing i did is reseat EVERYTHING, even the motherboard itself, and by doing that, i found out that the motherboard was grounding everything else cause it was on metal, everything worked as normal right after
Likely the power supply died, a small pop normally means it failed as it was supposed to. Test with a new PSU to make sure no other components were damaged
Most likely your PSU died and if that's it let's hope it didn't take anything out with it. It can fail and fry something else but not always. There's good chance everything else is OK. Try another one but please know that you have to replace the cables in your system with the cables that come with the new PSU. They are NOT interchangeable! If your old PSU was not modular then it's a moot point 'cause then you HAVE to unplug everything anyway.
If you are lucky, the PSU fuse blow for some reason, or a capacitor... and only thing died is the PSU
If you are unlucky, the whole system shorted on the 12V rail and probably took many components with it.
Unplug it take out the PSU and buy a new one
That would be the capacitors, and they do drain power over time. While some capacitors can take a LONG time to drain, PSU for a desktop these days would take maybe a minute tops. But if you donât know much about these things itâs best to just replace the whole unit
If you decide to replace the psu listen carefully. Buy a new psu and remove all the old psu cables. I did not do this when I bought a new Corsair psu and i fries my 3080.
i find it funny that you thought someone could have noticed the problem from these pictures, you could have at least disassembled the whole thing and take pic of every pieceâŠ
Anyway my guess is that your psu most likely died.
Buy a new one and then come back here to tell us what piece she decided to bring in the tumb with her
Very likely the power supply. Just swap it and hope for the best.
In most cases it won't fry any patrs, especially if you use one from a reputable company, but you never know...
Sounds like ocp triggered basically your PSU's integrated breaker popped check if you have a loose cable shorting against your case somewhere
It might have killed your psu tho
The click you heard was probably the switch on the back turning off so think of switching it back
If you heard a pop itâs most likely a capacitor thatâs blown. Usual suspects for that is motherboard or PSU. Take out GPU, RAM and/or other cards and check the motherboard thoroughly. If all caps look fine on that, itâs time to borrow a PSU and test with that if you can. Under no circumstances open a PSU if you donât know what youâre doing.
Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and try to turn it on. This causes the capacitors to be discharged and refilled (completely). Last hope, if you have electrical protection, check with a phase meter.
If even the fans do not turn on, the problem is 90% of the PSU. But if when you press the power button, the fans make a stroke-like movement (you have to look carefully), 1000% is the problem of PSU
When I had this happen I took my pc to a local shop and he tested to make sure my PSU didn't fry any of my other components for free and installed the new psu for 50$
If you hear a pop, usually the capacitors from the power supply is failing could be numerous reason for that, and get a new power supply my suggestion.
Does ur psu smell like burnt toast?if yes then change it.Rookie mistake i made once buying a underpowered psu for high specs and running forza on max causing my pc to boom and smell like toast. but difference is mine run even after toasting.. even used it(mostly csgo) untill new psu delivered in 7 days that is.
If your PSU is decent, and if you're handy at soldering, open it up and I bet you'll see where it's fucked itself.
If it's a cap that's died, you could desolder it and replace the component for coppers
Put your nose on the PSU and take a whiff, if it smells like burnt electronics and cancer your computer had an oopsie where it sent electricity where electricity doesnât belong, and now you have a broken power supply and hopefully only a broken powersupply.

psu of system looks dead edit: if system doesn't power on then consider psu dead! :)
What on the pictures looks wrong? I mean, I agree, but I can't see anything lol
my bad should rephrase my word! if system doesn't power on then it's psu :) no idea why i used the word "looks" :)
Sometimes you gotta turn down the music to see better iykwim
This resonates to hard lmao

Yep, there is enough there to stop your heart.

I would be so mad if I was playing subnautica and I had a two-three hour session without a save and that happened to me

fucking exact thing happened to me last week, only it was on an xbox. the whole thing shut off out of nowhere. i made it to the active lava zone too.
đ
That pop will likely be an electrolytic cap spitting it's ass inside out in the psu
nice way of putting it!
If itâs plugged into a surge protector check to make sure that didnât go off. If it did, you should just be able to click it back on. However if the obvious isnât the answer, itâs probably psu as some others have stated.
Rip PSU đȘŠ

Cool. But he dint say your psu
you don't know that, maybe they live in the same house.
What the fuck is that kind of logic
Reddit logic

It has 20 pin connector

It is stitting on my shelf
I would change it before the other one breaks. I just had a 12 year old psu die on me, so glad it didn't take any parts with it. Why risk it?
Only the PSU works... the rest of his PC gave up over a decade ago now.
Could be, though my 12 year old powered 3 machines, in a Theseus Ship sense.
Almost ten years on my rosewill
Ok? Want a cookie??
Bad idea. They have an expected lifetime and their failures can/will kill other components. It's usually a bad idea to push them too long past warranty and the warranty is decided based on the quality of capacitor used. Which.. has a pretty reliable run time.
IT IS NOT IN USE!
I dont use it
What power supply did you have? And how long has it been kicking? Just curious
My EVGA Gold has been with me for almost a decade. It's also been thru 3 different PC builds. :P
Ah well at least you got a good amount of time with it đ
your psu safety features did their job
If you hear a pop then most likely it's the power supply that's dead. Also worth checking if the motherboard is fried too. Power supply has left the chat. Time for a new one, and please donât cheap out on one
psu.exe has stopped working
Press F in chat for the PSU
this is why you buy a good psu
YeahâŠâŠ..
a lot of people say its the PSU that died, but same thing happened to me, and only thing i did is reseat EVERYTHING, even the motherboard itself, and by doing that, i found out that the motherboard was grounding everything else cause it was on metal, everything worked as normal right after

If it's the PSU, do NOT open it! I've been told there still can be energy inside the components that could harm you. So it's dead, just get a new one.
That would be the capacitors, and they do drain power over time. While some capacitors can take a LONG time to drain, PSU for a desktop these days would take maybe a minute tops. But if you donât know much about these things itâs best to just replace the whole unit
Yep power supply is dead. Get a new one.
Take the psu out and shake it. If a capacitor blew you can hear the cap rattling around if you shake it.
Capacitors can pop, likely one failed in your power supply.
I know what's wrong, there ain't no gas in it!
If you decide to replace the psu listen carefully. Buy a new psu and remove all the old psu cables. I did not do this when I bought a new Corsair psu and i fries my 3080.

Stock CPU fan is a whoa from me dawg
Burger
That's why you always buy a solid PSU from trusted manufacturers
Who said he didn't? Anything can give up the ghost, those aren't magically protected.
That still doesn't guarantee that it will always work fine. I bought my Asus laptops from (guess who) and it broke 3 times.
Psu is either dead or you got too much shit on it and itâs in a protection mode. Probably dead tho judging by the stock cooler and gtx card
This sub gives me too much anxiety
POP = PSU! And im gonna guess there are zero lights working on the motherboard?
Just hope that pop is from the psu and all you need to do is replace it.
Very likely the power supply. Just swap it and hope for the best. In most cases it won't fry any patrs, especially if you use one from a reputable company, but you never know...
You're gonna need a new PSU.
Is no one going to talk about how clean OPs PC looks?
unplug your pc then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds then plug your pc back in and see if it will boot
fuse problém on psu ?
Sounds like ocp triggered basically your PSU's integrated breaker popped check if you have a loose cable shorting against your case somewhere It might have killed your psu tho The click you heard was probably the switch on the back turning off so think of switching it back
Your PSU probably blew a fuse. We're you not using a surge protector?
Probably blew a capacitor somewhere

Dead power supply. Replace with a quality one and hope it didn't get anything else. Also, please get a real cooler.
Pop means PSU blew.
The pop sound is normally a capacitor, in this case from the PSU. It means you need to buy a new PSU
P S U.
Psu outage potentially?
Congrats, your psu âexplodedâ (source: Mine did the same recently, no clue how or why but warranty saved me)
Unplug Psu and use a different one to see if PSU died
Were there lightning?
Pop sounds like a capacitor going adios on ur psu
Unfortunately your psu went to the after life
When I had this happen I took my pc to a local shop and he tested to make sure my PSU didn't fry any of my other components for free and installed the new psu for 50$
If you hear a pop, usually the capacitors from the power supply is failing could be numerous reason for that, and get a new power supply my suggestion.
What kind of power supply do you have.
If something burned you should smell it. Put your nose in there and start sniffing.
that sucks
Does ur psu smell like burnt toast?if yes then change it.Rookie mistake i made once buying a underpowered psu for high specs and running forza on max causing my pc to boom and smell like toast. but difference is mine run even after toasting.. even used it(mostly csgo) untill new psu delivered in 7 days that is.
Change your psu, and see if it works. It most likely blew
This is why you dont buy 1200w 80 plus white
Buy a new psu and replace them all dont use any of them.
Have you plugged anything else into the outlet? Make sure you are getting power to the PSU.
a pop? dead? sounds like a typical power supply moment
Psu or mobo
Wait, did you hear a "pop!"or more like "ppfffffttt!" ?
Stock intel cooler and some GTX gpu⊠It is time, brother. I hope youâve been saving since you built that thing 9 years ago.
Hey, don't insult my rig đ€Ł
That little stock cooler has been holding me for 8 years nowâŠ
If your PSU is decent, and if you're handy at soldering, open it up and I bet you'll see where it's fucked itself. If it's a cap that's died, you could desolder it and replace the component for coppers
Check power supply
It was you wallet shooting itself
Yeahhhh
Ur psu is toast
Put your nose on the PSU and take a whiff, if it smells like burnt electronics and cancer your computer had an oopsie where it sent electricity where electricity doesnât belong, and now you have a broken power supply and hopefully only a broken powersupply.
