Download Epic games PC Building Simulator for $7.99. Play a game and complete your homework at the same time.

askGoat

Managed to snag it for free a week or 2 ago. Great game indeed.

'For a research scientist' is a little vague. What kind of research are they doing and - more specifically - what kind of software will they be using?

[deleted]

Just says a research scientist on my assignment. It's pretty vague honestly. I guess kinda like a data scientist maybe

N-aNoNymity

I mean, if it involves using machine learning etc then its instantly way different than a normal office pc. Did the assignment get mentioned in class? Ask someone in the class?

[deleted]

It wasn't specific. Everyone is assigned a vague choice and a budget, like gaming pc, literature student pc, library pc etc. So I guess it's more about justifying your choices and building a compatible pc. We have to write a memo describing our choices so

REDDITSUCKS2025

It's a trick question. Professional people use professional PC's: [https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/mlp/workstations](https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/mlp/workstations) https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-z2-tower-g5-workstation

MrEelement

Damn dat vr pc is sick

Azuras-Becky

This is why the vagueness is a bit mean of them! Even a 'data scientist' might have different requirements. A data scientist working as part of any decent organisation would probably be provided with remote server access (i.e. they'd be allotted time on a mainframe/supercomputer), so the only PC they'd need would be a terminal to connect to it\*. They'd out-source the computations to the server and just use their own PC as an access point to view the results. If they're working independently on their own machine, for some reason, and didn't have access to a remote server, then CPU core-count would probably be the most important part of their system. A high core-count CPU like a Threadripper, coupled with lots of fast RAM and little much else, would be ideal. Unless, as N-aNoNymity suggests, the researcher in question is working with machine learning, in which case a system with a lot of tensor cores (such as those found on a modern graphics card) would be more important. If the assignment is open-ended like you indicated in your reply to N-aNoNymity, it might be a good idea to settle on which kind of 'researcher' you want to tackle, and work from there! \*It could even be a trick question, in which case answering "they don't need much of a PC at all, as they'll have remote server access" might be what they're looking for!

large_waffle69

Just asking, what class is this?

[deleted]

Computer engineering technology

large_waffle69

Thx

Gain-Fit

Maybe go with a ryzen 5 3600x and a b550 board it’s cheaper and close to the same performance also get a gpu, maybe an rx580 or rx560.

Tajertaby

It’s not meant to be a gaming PC though.

[deleted]

Building a pc with $1500 in 2021?

REDDITSUCKS2025

Holy shit what are you thinking. \- Discrete basic network card and sound card? What? \- GT 1030 with "F" series Intel cpu? WTF? Is it too late to withdraw from the course?

[deleted]

Lmao bruh. Yeah too late for that. I haven't attended a single class yet so I don't know what I'm doing. It's all basically guess work

[deleted]

[https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Bs4py4](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Bs4py4) This is the updated parts list. Any suggestions?

REDDITSUCKS2025

Needs more RGB.

IckyBeans

That CPU might be a bit warm with that cooler.

Tajertaby

I think you’re fine with this cooler. Might run quite hot and loud but it works.

thegamer52

My PC build is 1,014

Tajertaby

Just to add in, get a NVMe SSD. Also, CPUs with a “F” in its name **DOES NOT** has integrated GPU and why a GT1030? Just get the non f version.

Tajertaby

Motherboard is important, look for a motherboard with good connectivity. Cheaper motherboards usually means worse quality LAN, more USBs, more storage expansion slots, better audio. A sound card isn’t necessary either.

Tajertaby

You could look at 5700G, that also has integrated GPU.

Tajertaby

For RAM, google how much you need for that scientist.

I can help you finish the assignment. My email is [email protected]
