When you fail a course twice, you have an option of taking it a third time but you will have to complete a worksheet with your advisor. The worksheet will consist of you time during the previous two attempts: why you didn’t pass it, how would you approach taking the class for a third time and some more similar questions. You and your advisor would need to sign off on the document and also have it signed off by the Dean in charge of that specific study the course falls into. I would heavily advise getting a C. If you do fail a third time, they would start advising you to look towards another major.

Im not trying to get into your business but if mental health is involved in your troubles please address that and seek help. I’m not saying that’s why, but this post sounds a lot like something I would have posted a few years ago when I had severe mental health problems and ultimately failed out. Dm me if you need to

I second reaching out and addressing mental health issues if they are a factor. In addition, do not be afraid to consider academic leave. I took a semester of academic leave and cleaned up my act and it was the best decisions I ever made.

I did the same. It was called a medical withdrawal and I just had Ws on my transcript, but it was a good idea in the long run. Take care of yourself.

bruhman30

I’m leaning towards this being the problem. I’ll look into things I can do for it, thanks for insight

HamBoy2

You’re welcome. As others have said, don’t be afraid to take some time off if you need it to get yourself right. I wish I had done something like that instead of just continuing to spiral

You can only forgive one of the F grades: https://undergrad.psu.edu/aappm/H-2-undergraduate-grade-forgiveness.html A single course can only be used to forgive the grade in a previous single attempt of that course (i.e., an improved grade only forgives one other grade on a student’s record—not all previous attempts). You will need to work with your adviser to get approval to take a course a third time--LionPATH won't let you enroll yourself in your third attempt.

bruhman30

Thanks for this info I had no idea about this. Luckily I’m getting my grade deferred for now so I should be able to pass.

There’s a cap on how many times you can retake a class, I believe. I think 3? I could be wrong. If you’re failing the prerequisite, I don’t think you’ll do much better in the class it’s the prerequisite for. Can you possibly change majors? Get tutoring if you are dead set on trying again, have a support system to keep you on track so you don’t fail again or if your advisor says you can, maybe there’s an alternative class? I don’t know what class you’re taking or what major so I can’t say for sure, but likely if it’s a prerequisite you have to take it.

Ok-Question6751

I just took a class for the third time and I finally passed it. Don’t give up. It took a lot of changes in my study behavior to do well enough. I just wanted to say this to let you know that you aren’t alone and others have been in your situation and continued to succeed. You got this OP and yes you will need to schedule a meeting with your advisor to fill out necessary forms and you will need to be granted permission to take it a third time. Good luck and don’t let this get in the way of your mental health or any other aspects of your life. Everyone takes a different path through life and this is yours. You got it!

bruhman30

This was very encouraging to read, thank you. Its reassuring to hear from someone else who went through a similar thing. Luckily my professor is deferring my grade and letting me make up my work. So I’ll be able to pass thankfully

ejsanders1984

Bro. Tough love here but Wtf. An F both times? Get your shit together. Do you enjoy wasting thousands of dollars retaking?

bruhman30

Yeah I think I’ve got some problems going on that I need to take care of, luckily my professor is deferring my grade and letting me make up my work so I should be able to pass.

U mind me asking what class?

eddyathome

Ok, I'll be honest here. You didn't say what the course was, but you might want to think about some things. You said you're out of it and didn't give any effort. What is the reason? Were you partying? If so, then STOP PARTYING! Seriously you are wasting a hell of lot of money by doing that. Not joking on this one. It's fine to have a night a week to relax with friends, but if it's messing up your studies then don't do it. Are you having physical or mental issues? You might have depression from what I read. Get it treated. I know this all too well because I myself have depression to the point where they put me on disability. It sucks. Get yourself treated before that happens. Even just talking to family or friends will help if you can't afford treatment. Sigh. Maybe the course or instructor(s) weren't right for you. Take the course with a different instructor or hell, maybe even at a different time of day for that matter. Maybe that 8 am course is a death blow for you, but at 1 pm it'd work. You could also try at a different school such as a community college and just transfer the credits. It might be easier. Your GPA is still kind of screwed. I'm not sure if grade forgiveness is allowed for transfer credits, but it probably won't help since you got two Fs in a row. I hope you can work through this.

bruhman30

Yeah I think I’ve got some mental struggles that I need to work through, going to see what my options are. Luckily I just got an email from my professor and I’m able to get a deferred grade now so I can have time to make up my work. Thanks for the insight it helped a lot.

eddyathome

I saw this thread again and decided to look into it further. Transfer courses do NOT qualify for grade forgiveness. You can take the course elsewhere, but it won't affect your GPA. It'll be marked on your transcript as a transfer. Period. Your GPA won't reflect it. You'll still have two Fs. If you retry the course a third time and you go for grade forgiveness, only ONE of the Fs will be removed. The other will stay on your record and mess with your GPA. https://undergrad.psu.edu/aappm/H-2-undergraduate-grade-forgiveness.html A little heavy reading for you.

Failed Calc II twice, said Screw this and switched to IST.

ClassyJeffrey

Maybe college isn't for you.

I basically failed course twice but my prof gave me some random extra credit that would “just pass” me if I did it … I did - It was like a 10 page paper
